ROORKEE: Lawyers in Laksar, Roorkee, have "unanimously" decided not to appear in court for a youth who was arrested on Friday for writing on his Facebook page a "congratulatory message" praising Pakistan for winning the ICC Champions Trophy.

Laksar Advocates' Association president Swatantra Kumar, while announcing the decision taken at a meeting, said, "Shadab Hasan's act was anti-national, therefore all the lawyers in the town have decided that they will not appear on his behalf in court."

After the lawyers' move, Shadab's kin are in panic. "There is fear of him going to jail for a long time if nobody fights his case," said a cousin of his who didn't want to be identified. "There is also danger outside as volunteers of a Hindu right wing group have strongly condemned his act. He may be attacked."

Shadab's uncle Mehboob Hasan said, "In the absence of a private pleader, we will urge the court for a public prosecutor. But, unfortunately, we are not in hurry for his bail, because we fear he may be attacked after his release. We will try for his bail after Eid when the dust is settled. I hope good sense will prevail upon our people by then."

Following the complaint of Mohit Verma, a member of the local traders' association, police arrested and booked Shadab, 23, who runs a dry cleaning shop in Laksar, 18 km from here, under section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Indian Penal Code.

On Saturday, Shadab was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate, who sent him to 14 days judicial custody. After Pakistan routed India in the finals of the ICC Championships Trophy on June 18, Shadab allegedly not only wrote congratulatory message for the Pakistani team, but also posted some "objectionable comments" on his Facebook account.

Defending his complaint, Verma, a jeweller, said, "I want him to learn a lesson so that he or other people of his community do not repeat such acts in the future."

"Since his act damages the respect and reputation of India, we will not appear for him in the court," added Kumar.

Hailing the lawyers' decision, Navin Chandra Semwal, inspector at Laksar police station, said: "The accused is a graduate and of sound mind, who runs a business. Thus, what he had done was a deliberate action. The decision of lawyers is certainly a welcome move."

I bet they'd be lining up around the corner to defend murderers and rapists.

India, just like Pakistan, will remain a fourth class country unless they change their mindset.

What if english authorities start to jail the british indians for supporting india?

A Hindu or Sikh would likely not have faced any action. Sad day for society that Muslims have to prove their patriotism.

Most South African muslim desis support Pakistan even though most of them have their roots in India.

Does that mean that the South African government should arrest them.

I am sure that south African muslim supporting pakistan includes you too:)go to pakistan.

For left wing extremists, these are the golden opportunities to demonstrate the stranglehold so the mainstream agenda traverse through smoothly.

What a joke indian court system is.

A lawyer is bound to defend anyone. Be it a rapist or even a murderer.

India has become one of the worst place to live for muslims

India has become one of the worst place to live for muslims

It has basically turned into a Hindu Pakistan since the last election. There was an article recently in the Economist that explored extremism in various countries and produced a graph that mapped extremist sentiment in the public against government restrictions. India fared better than Pakistan on government restrictions but significantly worse on public extremism and knowing how the public in Pakistan is, I shudder to think how bad a public that's even more extreme would be.

That boy will support for Pakistan for life.

It's just a sport end of the day. Taking such extreme action will only be counter productive and keep the support underground.

I don't know why people get worked up over it - they are not selling state secrets to the enemy.

Life of the boy is finished imo, it will take at least minimum 7 to 10 years to complete the trial and if there are enough evidence to prove his role in inciting communal hatred he will get life imprisonment.

Only thing is that Indian people give the impression that they are a fully developed country on the way to complete westernisation. It is worse then a third world country in every aspect you can think off. Pakistan and it's people have never denied we have massive problems.

This story would be funny if it was not so serious. How messed up these countries are...

All he has to do is shout a few anti Pakistani slogans or burn our flag. That will be good enough to please the majority community, good on ya! These lynchings and anti Muslim rhetoric has become every day news now. One major incident could lead to something really big.

I think it's fair enough if people feel upset at their fellow countrymen supporting neighbouring country with such tense relations but state getting involved and arresting people is RIDICULOUS and lawyers reusing to represent them is BEYOND RIDICULOUS. Lawyers don't even boycott most notorious criminals but somehow they boycott these people.....not sure whether to laugh or cry at this EXTREMIST mindset.

What is your suggestion for maintaining law and order in a country like india where majority of people don't respect the concept called freedom of speech. I don't think there is any provision in indian law to punish a guy for supporting a rival team.

I don't think there is too much room freedom of speech concept in Pakistan either so that is understndable however i completely fail to understand how even lawyers fail to represent such harmless people? Nationalism of this type seems as dangerous as religious extremism.

I think he made anti national or Anti Hindu comment which in the opinion of lawyers are not harmless, Normally people approach lawyers of other bar councils during these kind of situations.

He will be enjoying his life next month. A non issue really.Indian judiciary is competent.

There must be something more to the story than reported. But if it is as much as is reported then its ridiculous on part of lawyers and complainant.

This is quite pathetic by the lawyers. No wonder people dislike alot of them.

But playing devils advocate, I think lawyers might also be afraid as others will gang up on them for acting is legal counsol for this boy.
