Legendary cricket commentator Richie Benaud passes away [Update on post #23]

I will always cherish the memories of Cricket 97' : Ashes Tour Edition PC game especially. He will be missed.

Another thing about Richie is that he never dumbed down to anybody. He never talked down to his audience. He explained concepts so well and was such an easy listen, he never felt he had to fill every second of air time.

He always respected change too. One might think he'd be a staunch traditionalist but he wasn't. He said he "loved T20s" and was an innovative captain himself.

Best cricket commentator ever! RIP will be sadly and sorely missed!

Great sportsman, great commentator, great human being.
He was the most revered cricketing personality on the earth.
Really shattered on his demise.
You will remain in my heart Richie, till my own death!

Junaids Was Benaud only Genuine spin bowling AR in history of Cricket?

Hur Rizvi, I always get accused of living in the past, so I'm going to say two names, one of which will shock you.

The predictable one is Sobers. But I'll surprise you by advocating Shakib, who I think is a sensational all-rounder!

The difference, of course, is in the level of greatness. Richie retired as the highest wicket taker of all time both as a spinner and as an Australian, two aspects of his greatness which are often forgotten today.

PCB Chairman, COO condole with Cricket Australia and Richie Benaud’s family and friends

Pakistani cricketing fraternity mourns Richie Benaud’s passing away

LAHORE–April10, 2015: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered its condolences to Cricket Australia and asked it to convey these to the family and friends of legendary former Australia captain and commentator Richie Benaud.

Following protracted illness, Richie Benaud passed away at the age of 84.

“The ‘Captain Cavalier’ and the ‘Voice of Cricket’ shall be missed in Pakistan as much as anywhere else”, said PCB Chairman Shehryar Mohammad Khan.

“The Pakistanis of my vintage remember him from the early 1960s when he brought an Australian team to Pakistan as its skipper. He was an intense but fair competitor. Those from the latter generations shall recall his voice on radio and on television, its richness and analytical depth, passion and candour making him the standout amongst the best of the best. That was why he was unanimously given the sobriquet, ‘the Voice of Cricket’.

“We, the PCB and the Pakistani cricketing fraternity, deeply mourn Richie Benaud’s passing away. Personally and on behalf of the PCB, I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends and Cricket Australia,” said Shaharyar Khan.

“Richie Benaud was a charismatic and legendary figure – an icon indeed. His career and his continued association with the game as a commentator and writer is a most enriching part of Australia’s and world cricket’s heritage. He shall be remembered”, said Subhan Ahmad, the PCB COO.

Richie Benaud (1930-2015)

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expresses deep bereavement at the passing away of legendary Australian cricket commentator and former Test captain Richie Benaud. The news of Mr Benaud’s demise has been received with great sadness in Bangladesh where he has always been looked up to as a broadcast commentary icon.

The President and Directors of the BCB have extended the most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Benaud and Cricket Australia in this time of extreme grief.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan, MP has paid tribute to the legacy of Richie Benaud. In a message Mr Hassan said: “Richie Benaud’s voice was an institution in its own right. Generations of Bangladeshi cricket lovers have grown up listening to the ‘voice of cricket’ and many in this country and around the world have been inspired and drawn to the beautiful game of cricket through his unique style of commentary.

“Not many players can replicate the same level of greatness in a different field after retirement but Benaud, who has had a glittering playing and captaincy career, managed to take his role as a commentator, cricket writer and cricket analyst to a whole new height which has remained unsurpassed till this day.”

Such tragic news. I knew it was only a matter of time after he had his accident. It doesn't make his passing any easier to take. Richie was a part of my growing up in Australia, summer days watching the cricket listening to his voice. He had the perfect delivery and a dry wit. I will really miss him.

If we're going to have a discussion about Benaud's legacy as a player I have to correct anyone who thinks he's the second best legspinner in Australian history.

Warne, O'Reilly and Grimmett should all be rated higher.

Kindly keep this thread for condolence messages

Australia prime minister Tony Abbott: "A sad day for Australia. We have lost a cricketing champion and Australian icon. What an innings. RIP Richie Benaud."

Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara: "So sad to hear about the passing of Richie Benaud. The great voice of cricket is no more. He defined an era with conviction and sincerity."

Australia coach Darren Lehmann: "Our thoughts are with the Benaud family at this time, RIP one of the game's all-time greats. He will be missed by the whole cricketing world."

England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke: "Cricket has lost perhaps its greatest advocate and someone who was a true giant of the modern game."

Australia's record wicket-taker Shane Warne: "Dear Richie, you were a legend on all levels and rightly so too. As a cricketer, commentator and as a person, you were the best there's ever been and to top it off, an absolute gentleman. For me it was an honour and a privilege to call you a close friend and mentor."

Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott: "Farewell Richie Benaud. Wonderful cricketer, great captain, a master craftsman commentator and top man. Will always be remembered and admired."

Former India captain Anil Kumble: "His values cut across all generations and was the best example in cricket to everyone associated with it. Always had a kind word for every cricketer. Above all a great human being. Had a special place for every leg spinner. Very sad day for cricket."

Two years since he passed away.

Just for the record, when Richie Benaud retired he had the second largest haul of Test wickets in history, behind the record holder Fred Trueman.

Second placed Brian Statham then overtook Benaud but ended up with only four more wickets.

Death anniversary. Last time it was Friday 10th April Richie Benaud passed away. Half a decade today.

My Favorite commentator who had a very unique calm style of his own. Shane Warne even summed up that Richie Benaud had an even greater impact and legacy than Bradman.

6 years ago, Richie Benaud passed away. For me he was always the 'voice of cricket' and left an indelible impression on international cricket that is felt to this day, especially when you see some of the current commentators go about their job. And you see how much they are lacking when it comes to being a great commentator.

I recently came across a list of his tips on commentary that I found interesting and thought I would share here. I do hope this list somehow manages to reach Ramiz Raja.

Richie Benaud's top tips on commentary:

1. Never ask a statement
2. Remember the value of the pause
3. There are no teams in the world called 'we' or 'they'
4. Avoid cliches and banalities. such as 'he's hit that to the boundary', 'he won't want to get out now', 'of course', 'as you can see on the screen'.
5. The Titanic was a tragedy, the Ethiopian drought a disaster, and neither bears any relation to a dropped catch.
6. Put your brain into gear before opening your mouth.
7. Concentrate fiercely at all times.
8. Above all, don't take yourself too seriously, and have fun.

RIP Richie. You are missed but your legacy lives on forever.

"Jonessss.....Bowden!!!"

My fav voice on cricket.
so much so that I went ahead and purchased a game called EA Cricket with his voice.
Fancy hearing well played when you left an outswinger alone.

During Asif Karim's famous spell vs Australia in 2003 WC, Richie Benaud and Ian Healy went on commentary. Karim was bamboozling the legendary Australian lineup, and Healy suggested perhaps the pitch was misbehaving.

Richie immediately cuts in "No, No. I reckon it's the guy himself."

That's why he was the best.

yeah he was very pragmatic and knew when to speak. Weighed his words carefully and spoke

Richie Benaud's top tips on commentary

Came across this on social media. Found it very interesting.

Now while you read this, do keep in mind Waqar Younis and Athar Ali Khan

Remembering the Late Richie Benaud on his birthday.

Top commentator

We now have to suffer with the likes of Wasim Akram announcing PK are 55/3 after 9 overs every over even though we can read this on the screen.

One of Australia's finest allrounders and captains, and a simply marvellous commentator.
On This Day in 1930, the legendary Richie Benaud was born.
