Leicester confirm Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha succeeds father as chairman

Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha has been formally named as chairman of Leicester City, succeeding his late father Vichai.

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was killed along with four other passengers when his helicopter crashed outside the King Power Stadium last October.

Aiyawatt has been acting chairman and said it was a "privilege" to now be confirmed in the role.

"It feels like there is so much more to come," the 34-year-old added.

"It is a privilege to become the next chairman of this great club and to lead the Leicester City family into the next chapter of what has already been an extraordinary story."

The Srivaddhanaprabha family took over Leicester in 2010 and helped the club return to the Premier League in 2014 before winning the title in 2015-16.

Last season Aiyawatt oversaw the dismissal of former manager Claude Puel in February and the appointment of Brendan Rodgers, who guided the Foxes to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League.

He said he would now pursue his father's dream of seeing the club move to a new training base next summer and the potential expansion of the King Power Stadium.

"As we approach the start of the new season, there is genuine excitement and positivity among our supporters and in the football community about what we can achieve," he added.

"We have an exciting young squad, an outstanding manager and backroom staff, and a well-structured and sustainable off-pitch operation, all backed by an energised and engaged supporter base."

Leicester begin their Premier League campaign at home to Wolves on Sunday.

Leicester 2nd in the Premier League Table.

Rodgers is doing an exceptional job for them.

Enjoying watching them this season.

Vardy is a nightmare for defenders and the likes of Chilwell and Maddison just seem to get better with each match.

If it weren’t for City and Liverpool who are too good, Leicester could have repeated the 2015-16 heroics.

They are well coached by Rogers. They are also smart in recruitment. They sell well and replace players for good prices.

Only worry for them is if Vardy was to get injured they don't have an obvious replacement. The team is set up to get the best out of him.

If they keep him fit , they will probably finish in the top 4.

Tielemans is some player.

I can't believe that someone like Man Utd or Spurs didn't try to sign him.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers had signed a contract extension committing him to the club until 2025.

The former Liverpool manager, 46, dismissed speculation earlier this week linking him with the vacant Arsenal job following Unai Emery's sacking.

Rodgers had signed a deal until 2022 when he joined the Foxes from Celtic in February.

Leicester have won 17 of their 26 Premier League matches under him and are second in the table.

Rodgers said: "I've inherited an outstanding team of staff that are dedicated to progress and improvement and we have a group of players that are a joy to work with every day."

Leicester's next Premier League game is away at Aston Villa on Sunday.

People are "trying to fit a narrative" around James Maddison, says Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers who defended the midfielder after images of his night out in Dubai were published.

The 23-year-old has previously been criticised for going to a casino the night England lost a Euro 2020 qualifier in October.

"It's unfortunate," said Rodgers.

"We're supposedly in this world where everyone 'cares'. Rubbish - the first thing they do is try to stitch you up."

The Foxes are currently on their mid-season break, and Rodgers added: "It's contradictory, it's unbelievable. So there's something framed around him which, OK, he'll have to live with but that's someone else's narrative.

"This is a 23-year-old boy who is single, he's been given a week free. We try to educate them in many ways, but this is something I'm not too bothered about.

"I can only judge him on my time here, nearly a year now, he's been absolutely brilliant for me. And outside of the pitch, he's been an absolute joy.

"A charming young man, really respectful. He really respects what he has here at Leicester."

Maddison had been selected in England squads but had yet to play for the national side prior to the criticism over his visit to a casino. Despite the fallout he went on to win his first cap, during the 7-0 win over Montenegro in November.

The former Norwich player has been tipped to earn a spot in the Euro 2020 squad having scored nine goals this season to help Leicester to third spot in the Premier League.

Rodgers added: "There's two different mindsets, a social mindset and a professional mindset. The top ones, professionally, have the mentality to do it every single day and look after themselves and then produce.

"Availability, staying fit, looking after yourself over numbers of years, that's the difference."

Three Leicester City first-team players have self-isolated after showing symptoms of coronavirus and "have been kept away from the rest of the squad", manager Brendan Rodgers has said.

Rodgers did not specify which players had been quarantined but added that the club had "followed procedures".

The Foxes are due to play Watford at Vicarage Road in the Premier League on Saturday at 12:30 GMT.

"We had a few players that have shown symptoms and signs," Rodgers said.

"It would be a shame [if the Watford game were postponed], but the public's health is the most important in all of this."

Asked if the game could be played behind closed doors, Rodgers said: "The game is all about the players and the fans and if you have one of those not there, it's obviously not the same."

It is understood the players' symptoms have not yet reached the threshold for coronavirus testing but they will continue to be assessed.

The UK government is expected to announce on Thursday that it is stepping up its response to the pandemic.

It is anticipated the UK will switch to tactics aimed at delaying its spread, rather than containing it, when the government's emergency committee meets.

Delay is the phase in which "social distancing" measures will be considered - which could include restrictions on public gatherings above a certain number of people, although this is not thought likely at this stage.

It comes after the World Health Organization designated the outbreak of the disease a pandemic.

There are 484 confirmed cases in the UK and eight people have died.

Top-flight leagues in Spain and Italy have been postponed, while Wednesday's game between Manchester City and Arsenal was postponed as a "precautionary measure".

Five Gunners players were in self-isolation after meeting Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Inquest Opens Into 2018 Helicopter Crash That Killed Leicester City Owner

An inquest into the 2018 helicopter crash that killed the owner of Leicester City Football Club opened on Monday. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four others were killed when the Thai billionaire's personal helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from the Premier League club's King Power Stadium following a match in October 2018. Catherine Mason, the coroner presiding over the hearing, told the jury that under English law the role of an inquest is simply to determine the facts over how someone died rather than make rulings on individual guilt or innocence.

"An inquest hears evidence so the jury can make findings of fact and come to a conclusion about the deaths," said Mason, sitting at Leicester City Hall. "Nobody is on trial here.

"An inquest does not decide matters of criminal or civil liability," added Mason, who also said the hearing was expected to last for between two and three weeks.

In a tribute read to the court by the lawyer for the family of Srivaddhanaprabha, he was described as "a good man with a good heart".

The family statement also paid tribute to his role in reviving Leicester's fortunes and bankrolling their shock Premier League title triumph in 2016 after the Midlands club were 5,000/1 rank outsiders to be crowned champions of England at the start of that season.
