1) shows some ability and skill at domestic or U-19
2) some coach identify , and hype them
3) inducted into the team
4) Do pretty well at initial games
5) Becomes media darling and have some connections with journalists
6) After 1/2 MoM, these journalists hype them to be the next captain
7) Gets the honorable talented label from our media
8) As player gets more games, his performance declines
9) No further skill development [ as he is already a very talented player ]
10) Gets dropped from the team for poor performance
11) Goes back to media houses, looking for support that he is dropped unfairly, and he lacks confidence
12) Media manipulate stats to show how talented he is, give examples of past, etc.
13) Player performs above average at domestic
14) Media shouts for him
15) Player gets a chance in International team, and fails again

Repeat from step 9, until he retires as wasted or talented player

Between point 14 & 15 they improve enough to minnow bash or home bash and clings to the team like a leach at the name of experience

At international matches every player gets found out soon. This is why lots of players do well initially and then fall off. You have to constantly work on strengthening your weaknesses. You are an unknown when you arrive, few matches in every team will figure you out.

I am talking about 90-95% of our cricketers. Pick out the history of players from 1990's onwards , and you might see similar trend. I am all for media to point out our weaknesses, but the way they hype the player makes it like only that individual played the game not entire team, and that is the reason we never ever developed a strong team culture, and focussed more on individuals..

We are strongly missing the piece where player takes ownership for his own improvements. Rather what we see , they go back to domestic , cringe a lot with media. And only in our country I see lots of TV shows, talk shows where athletes are part of it. Giving views are okay, but here we see people make it a full time job. Criticize everyone from top to bottom of PCB, they had their chances, ( and except for few players we lost in our system like Fawad Alam, Abid Ali, etc. ), and if they are not in the team that means they were not good enough. The only thing these players don't realize that they can be replaced soon, if they can not grab opportunity with both hands..

You've rightly pointed out the life cycle, and I agree with it for the most part. I think what will break this routine is a true Center of Excellence, equipped with elite coaches, trainers and doctors. Every player in every part of the world gets worked out at some point in their career. What they need to do then is go back to the CoE and work with an elite coach on correcting their shortcomings and come back a better player.

Simply put, that is what Pakistan is lacking.

I have to say that Pakistan haven't been able to replace the likes of Saeed Anwar, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saleem Malik etc. They have been rebuilding since 2003 and they never got the desired result.

I think hyping up players is very counterproductive. Let the players settle first.

I don't know what role media has in with our players. Never seen in any country premier sports that players and journalists are so involved to discuss dressing room stuff..

Even in 1990s we were not very consistent in our performance. The only difference was there was no clear cut dominating team. West Indies was on decline. Australia was giving okays performance, South Africa was amazing but then they started choking at WC, India was below mediocre, SL had only good 2/3 years from 95 - 97, England was not taking ODIs seriously, and NZ was NZ back then. So we had more opportunities to win many series. While one may argue we had star studded team, its same for other teams also except India (they had the weakest team of their times in 90s).

As long as media will use cricketers for their TRP or talk shows, we will never be able to develop great team culture which is very much important these days..

This is basically the career CV of most of our cricketers.

I don't remember a single Pakistani player doing consistently well after his initial good performances, apart from Babar.

Recently, we have seen so many of them dissapearing after making a strong debut. The likes of Fakhar, Hasan, Shadab, etc.. just add to a long list of players who started off with a bang, and never progressed due to their lack of work ethic.

Babar, and to an extent Shaheen are the only two recent players who have somehow managed to progress, the former being a consistent hard worker who always wants to improve and his numbers are just a testament of his dedication. I wish the rest had half the commitment Babar has.

Great thread mate

The reason we have been in a rebuilding process since end of 2003 WC. We are unable to develop players after the inital success at international level.

Recent example

Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Fakhar Zaman and Faheem etc have shown zilch improvement. We will pick new players, the cycle continues on and we will always be in a rebuilding process

Marnus Labuschagne is a great example of hard work can do wonders

Our own Shan Masood, the most medicore player ever to debut for Pakistan, had worked really really hard to reach a decent level. Maybe our youngsters don't have the work ethics to improve

May be because all these players are in delusion that they are talented just because of their 1/2 innings in 100s of games they played, and think PCB will one day grovel to them, that you are very talented player, and please come and save us. And I think media is equally responsible for the decline of Akmal and Shehzad. Media keep UA thinking that even after numerous failures UA deserve to be in team.

And this cycle will continue until selectors stop listening to the music of media. And why players would work hard, they now know, if they want to get re selected in the team who to contact.

Shaheen is still fairly new to the team, so I wouldn’t get to excited just yet.
Babar seems to be the only player who is constantly improving.

The label of talent hurts Pakistan more than anything.

According to some people Shadab and Faheem are still very talented, but they lack the work ethics. They don't have the desire to be the best in the world, they are just happy with the money they are earning and they don't care much about the national team.

Haris Sohail is one of the most useless and laziest player ever, he was looking million dollars in the WC but he again lost his way.
