Liverpool have completed the £36.9m signing of Mohamed Salah from Roma. The 25-year-old has been a long-term target, with Liverpool missing out on his signature three years ago when he joined Chelsea before embarking on an underwhelming spell in the Premier League.

However, after impressing in Serie A with 29 goals in 65 appearances for Roma, the Liverpool manager, Jürgen Klopp, believes the winger has developed a more rounded game and his “incredible” pace will add depth to a squad which will be further tested this season with the challenge of a Champions League campaign.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Salah said: “I’m very excited to be here. I’m very happy. I will give 100% and give everything for the club. I really want to win something for this club.

“We have a great team and very good players. I was watching the games last year and everyone was giving 100% to win something. Everyone can see the coach gives everything. I hope to see that together we can give everything to win something for the club, for the supporters and for us.”

The fee, which could rise to a staggering £43.9m with add-ons according to Roma, is a record transfer fee for the club, eclipsing the £35m spent on Andy Carroll from Newcastle United back in January 2011. Chelsea are due to receive a percentage of the Egypt international’s latest transfer fee.

Klopp said of his new signing, who will wear the No11 shirt for Liverpool: “Mohamed has the perfect mix of experience and potential – this is a really exciting signing for us. He knows the Premier League, he has pedigree in the Champions League and he is one of the most important players for his country.

“His record in Italy has been outstanding and he possesses qualities that will enhance our team and squad. His pace is incredible, he gives us more attacking threat and we are already strong in this area.

“Most important, though, for us, is that he is hungry, willing and eager to be even better and improve further. He believes in what we are trying to do here at Liverpool and is extremely keen to be part of it.

“He is very excited about performing for our wonderful supporters. He is an ambitious player who wants to win and win at the highest level; he knows he can fulfil those ambitions with Liverpool.”

Klopp has already signed England’s Under-20 World Cup winner Dominic Solanke after his contract expired with Chelsea, with a fee likely to be decided by a tribunal, but the plan is for him to start in the Under-23s side.

While Salah will be the second arrival of the summer at Anfield there are a number of players surplus to requirements and Liverpool have already turned down an £11m bid for the out-of-favour left-back Alberto Moreno from Napoli. The Italian side are expected to return with an improved offer but face competition from two Premier League clubs and his former club Sevilla.

Big signing for Liverpool, as they had been after Salah for a while. He was pretty good in Italy following a fairly underwhelming spell at Chelsea.

Interested to see how he fares this time around in England.

Waste of money.... buying a failed lightweight.

Also, where will he play? Who will he replace? He's direct competition for Mane or coutinho.... or has he been bought to on the bench.

Once again why couldn't we have spent this money on Pickford to go in goal.... where there is a pressing need.

Can you loan him to us please :yk Markhor

Liverpool moved Coutinho back to CM as a number 8 with outstanding results. Salah is left footed and he can play on the left successfully however Liverpool's front three is interchangeable so it doesn't matter because he can play anyway across the front line. You obviously did not bother watching Liverpool near the end of the season as they were brilliant with Coutinho at CM in a narrow formation without needing a LW but now with Salah they can add width to their play and not have to rely on the fullbacks to get forward.

Ridiculous and risky amount of money for a player that could end up flopping

Have to pay the going price. Had Liverpool not paid up fans would have accused owners of failing them again. No signing offers any guarantee but with Mane on one side and Salah on the other the potential is amazing.

I think Salah is a good purchase. Though 2 different leagues, but his stats for last season in Seria A for Minutes, goal, assist & chance created is better than Countinho, Mane, Firmino & Lallana; therefore he must be in great form. Also, at 24 he is entering his best 5/6 years.

I don't look at the transfer fee these days because market has gone crazy. It's hilarious to offer $125mn for a 18 years old kid, but then, top clubs these days has an annual turn over close to $1billion, from a business that needs less than 100 people to run & 25 pieces of assets; therefore those assets will cost crazy to acquire.

However, in terms of priority, I have to say this was our 5th in order. Before a winger we need a powerful CM (Kieta, £50mn), CB (£VVD, 60mn), LB (Mendy, £40mn) & a CF (Mbappe, £100mn) was more important. That's another £250mn & if we reach half of that, I would like to believe that there is a change in ownership coming. Chinese, Arab, Russian ... whoever might be, is using FSG as a shield against market blowing out of proportion like every target that MCity, PSG or Real touches.

Pleased with this signing and the best part is they have tied it down early. Mane on the right wing and Salah on the left can potentially wreak havoc on the pitch. Liverpool have since the time of Rafa been poor with players on the wing. Guys like Albert Riera, Jermaine Pennant, Stewart Downing, Yossi Benayoun were all average at best so it's amazing finally both the wings are well covered.

I think Salah comes back to the PL much more mature and stronger. The fee is OK in the current day and age.

Now that this is over Klopp must target in the following order:-

1- Left back - our only options are Moreno and Milner. It is the most critical

2- Centre back - we had a poor season and the worst record amongst the top 4 in goals conceded. It is vital we sign a guy who can lead the defense the way Carragher or Agger did. Van Dijk is still a target and I hope now that Pellegrini is manager we are able to get him.

Rest there are wishes for a ST and CM. honestly speaking would not mind if we did not get any CMs or ST. We have Firmino, Sturridge, Ings and Solanke now in ST.

In CM we have Coutinho, lallana, Milner, Wijnaldum and Can. So there's still plenty of options.

I forgot in ST we have Origi as well.

Good signing. But I think Liverpool had other areas they should have bought in. A striker and cb are more of a priority.

I'd say it's a good signing for Liverpool. Not sure if it's a great one for Salah, as Roma are arguably a stronger side than Liverpool right now, although probably not as popular around the world.

Roma finished 2nd in Seria A, while Liverpool at 4th in EPL which, I'll say a better performance. One way you can say is one finished 2nd behind Juve (2nd surrendered league on 35th round), other finished ahead of MU & Arsenal. This year 3 players Salah, Paredes & Dzeko had their career best season (Dzeko is probably highest scorer with 29 goals, while Salah had the highest productivity), hence Roma closed the gap with Juve, but next year they have already lost st Salah, almost certainly will loose Paredes & Dzeko is turning 31.

I think, if we can bring VvD & Kieta, we'll make the QF of CL for sure. Along with that, if Sturridge remains healthy, we should fight for both big titles.

Fair points. I think VVD and Kieta could make Liverpool strong PL title contenders, but I'm not sure how likely those signings are.
