An explosion on a Tube train at Parsons Green caused panic in South West London this morning.

A bomb squad and armed police have all been seen arriving at the station following the blast which happened in a white bucket inside a Lidl carrier bag.

Wires could be seen coming out of the bucket which was on fire and people described fleeing from the train as soon as the doors opened.

A metro.co.uk reporter at the scene described seeing people with facial burns, adding that they were ‘really badly burned’ and ‘their hair was coming off’.

Fire crews and paramedics also rushed to the scene to help people after the fireball went down the carriage.
They said that the rear of the train filled with smoke and people left the train, some panicking, at Parsons Green.

One woman described how she had hurt her legs and had seen a large flame fill the carriage and another woman had ash in her hair.

Others went to nearby coffee shops before they were told to leave so that injured people could be treated.

People quickly started saying that a bomb had gone off, sparking panic.

Initially people were told they could not leave the station before an evacuation took place.

Media technology consultant Richard Aylmer-Hall, 53, was sitting on the District Line train bound for central London when panic unfolded at around 8.20am.

He said he saw several people injured, having apparently been trampled as they tried to escape.

He told the Press Association: ‘I was blissfully reading my paper and listening to a podcast and suddenly the whole world charged past me down the platform, down the Tube.

‘I was on the Tube, we had just stopped at Parsons Green, I was on my way up from Wimbledon towards Paddington and suddenly there was panic, lots of people shouting, screaming, lots of screaming.

‘There was a woman on the platform who said she had seen a bag, a flash and a bang, so obviously something had gone off.

‘It was an absolutely packed, rush-hour District Line train from Wimbledon to Edgware Road.

‘I saw crying women, there was lots of shouting and screaming, there was a bit of a crush on the stairs going down to the streets.

‘Some people got pushed over and trampled on, I saw two women being treated by ambulance crews.

‘Since then, every emergency vehicle in London has gone past me, fire engines, ambulances, every type of police vehicle.’

Mr Aylmer-Hall added: ‘I don’t think anyone was hurt by the actual device or whatever it was.’
Natasha Wills, of London Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called at 8.20am to reports of an incident at Parsons Green underground station.

‘We have sent multiple resources to the scene including single responders in cars, ambulance crews, incident response officers and our hazardous area response team, with the first of our medics arriving in under five minutes.
‘Our initial priority is to assess the level and nature of injuries. More information will follow when we have it.’

BBC correspondent Riz Lateef, who was at the station travelling to work, said there was ‘panic as people rushed from the train, hearing what appeared to be an explosion.

‘People were left with cuts and grazes from trying to flee the scene. There was lots of panic.’

One passenger, named only as Lucas, told BBC 5 live: ‘I heard a really loud explosion – when I looked back there appeared to be a bag but I don’t know if it’s associated with it.
‘I saw people with minor injuries, burnings to the face, arms, legs, multiple casualties in that way.
‘People were helping each other.’

Transport for London said Tube services were suspended between Edgware Road and Wimbledon.
In a statement, Scotland Yard said: ‘Police were called at approximately 8.20am to Parsons Green Underground Station following reports of an incident on a Tube train.
‘Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service and British Transport Police are in attendance along with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.
‘We would advise people to avoid the area.’

Another witness, Sham, said he saw a man with blood all over his face.
‘There were loads of people crying and shaking,’ he told 5 live. ‘There were a lot of people limping and covered in blood. One guy I saw, his face was covered in blood – I’ve never seen anything like it.’
British Transport Police said: ‘We’re aware of an incident at Parsons Green station. Officers are at the scene. The station is closed.’

Transport for London said it is ‘investigating an incident at Parsons Green’ and urged customers travelling between Wimbledon and Earls Court to use alternative routes.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘We are on scene alongside the Metropolitan Police at Parsons Green.’

London Fire Brigade said they were called to the incident at 8.21am on Friday.

Breaking news at the moment.

Thankfully nobody has died, but this is yet another attack on the UK this year.

It looks like a device was left on the train and then assailant chipped off before it went off.

An amateur homemade device from the looks of it. Hopefully the nutter will be caught quickly.

When the public transport systems gets targeted it's an absolute nightmare situation. Quite worrying that even a crude attempt like this one seems to have got through the security checks.

Depressing and worrying. Thankfully there's no serious injuries, the device prematurely detonated, but these terror attacks in Europe are not abating.

How do you stop these crazed lone wolves, radicalised over the internet or by friends/family, from acting out their violent fantasies - be it running civilians over in a car, knifing people to death or trying to blow up commuters on a train using crude homemade devices ?

London Tube was already hit in 2005, how can someone simply leave this bag full of explosives on a train without anyone noticing ?

An explosion that injured a number of people at Parsons Green underground station in West London was a terrorist incident, the Met police have said.

Commuters on a tube train reported hearing a bang and a fireball flying down the carriage during Friday morning rush-hour. Pictures and video, purporting to be from the train carriage, were posted of flames coming out of a carrier bag containing a white bucket.

London ambulance service said it had taken 18 patients to a number of hospitals. None was thought to be in a serious or life-threatening condition.

Neil Basu, the senior national coordinator for counter-terrorism policing, declared it was a terrorist incident.

A Met spokesman said: “At present we are aware of a number of people who have suffered injuries. It is too early to confirm the cause of the fire, which will be subject to the investigation that is now under way by the Met’s counter-terrorism command”.

Downing Street said Theresa May would be chairing a meeting of the government’s Cobra emergencies committee on Friday morning. It said the prime minister was receiving regular updates on the situation.

May said: “My thoughts are with those injured at Parsons Green and the emergency services who, once again, are responding swiftly and bravely to a suspected terrorist incident.”

Armed officers attended the scene, along with the London ambulance service and London fire brigade, though their official statements revealed little about the nature of the incident.

St Mary’s hospital, Paddington, declared a “major incident” in anticipation of an influx of patients from Parsons Green.

A Transport for London spokeswoman said the District line had been suspended between Earl’s Court and Wimbledon due to a security alert.

One witness said there were injuries at Parsons Green after a “stampede” of passengers.

Media technology consultant Richard Aylmer-Hall, 53, was sitting on the District line train bound for central London at about 8.20am when he said there was panic around him.

“Suddenly there was panic, lots of people shouting, screaming, lots of screaming,” he said. “There was a woman on the platform who said she had seen a bag, a flash and a bang, so obviously something had gone off.

He added: “I saw crying women, there was lots of shouting and screaming, there was a bit of a crush on the stairs going down to the streets. Some people got pushed over and trampled on. I saw two women being treated by ambulance crews.”

Witnesses said that many children, who were on their way to school, were among the injured.

A reporter from London’s Metro newspaper said he had seen people with facial burns. The BBC’s Sophie Raworth said she had seen two ambulances leaving the scene and several people treated, including a woman with burns.

Chris Wildish, who was on the train, said he saw a “device” in the last carriage. “It was a white bucket, a builder’s bucket, in a white Aldi bag or Lidl bag,” he told BBC 5 Live.

'People were falling on top of each other': Parsons Green witness explains the panic
“Flames were still coming out of it when I saw it and had a lot of wires hanging out of it – I can only assume it was done on purpose,” he said. “It was standing against the door of the rear-most carriage.”

Five Metropolitan police vans arrived on the scene at about 9.40am along with a BTP command van. A 100-metre cordon was erected around the station.

The incident is the fourth terrorist attack in the UK this year, following incidents at Westminster, London Bridge, Manchester and Finsbury Park in north London. The UK terrorism threat level remains at severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said the city “utterly condemns the hideous individuals who attempt to use terror to harm us and destroy our way of life”. He urged Londoners to “remain calm and vigilant”.

I thought the lone wolves and the more organised groups would have been weeded out by now, there have been plenty of pre-emptive arrests of suspects in the last couple of years, but it seems that the constant turmoil and publicity generated over the conflicts in Muslim lands is fuelling the fire when it really should have died out by now. It could also be infiltration from those countries as there seems to be much larger numbers of refugees landing here one way or the other.

And here comes Trump....

You can just walk onto the train at plenty of stations without going through any barrier.

Working from home today, usually tend to stop quite near Parsons Green for work too!

Thankfully no deaths but this is appalling to see and hear about and hope all the bad apples are routed out asap.

I think it's fair to say that Trump controls his own Twitter handle - also recall "covfefe".

I like it, it makes it more authentic and straight from the source. Rather than every other premiere where their Twitter is just PR and gloss.

loads of sleeper cells across Europe especially in bigger cities like London with large Muslim populations. So these guys can attack at any time.

Most sustained campaign of terror in the U.K since the IRA in the 70s. I remember someone on PP said that Terrorism was barely an issue in the U.K General elections but it certainly is one now. The chickens are coming home to roost.

Sad incident. I just spoke to a friend of mine who was on the tube at the same time. Thankfully her and her husband are fine.

The tube is far too big and crowded for any real security to stop such attempts.

This is why so many of us in the UK were demanding no war in Iraq. The ramifications will be felt for many years to come now.

Parsons Green: UK terror threat increased to critical after Tube bomb

The UK terror threat has been increased to its highest level as police continue the hunt for the person behind the Tube bombing in south-west London.

The prime minister said the threat was now critical, meaning an attack is expected imminently, after a device was detonated at Parsons Green station.

Police said some 1,000 armed officers would be seen across the country after military assistance was requested.

So-called Islamic State has said it was behind the attack, which injured 29.

Mrs May said the military would be providing support to police and would replace them on guard duties at certain sites that are not accessible to the public.

These will include Buckingham Palace, Downing Street, embassies and the Palace of Westminster and will enable armed officers to carry out patrols, the Met said.

Police Scotland also said it would be increasing the number of armed officers on patrol, particularly at key locations and crowded places.

The use of the military to assist police has been done under the first phase of Operation Temperer, a government plan to deploy troops to help police following major terrorist attacks, which was activated for the first time on 23 May following the Manchester Arena attack.

Mrs May said: "The public will see more armed police on the transport network and on our streets, providing extra protection.

"This is a proportionate and sensible step which will provide extra reassurance and protection while the investigation progresses."

Twenty-nine people have been treated in hospitals, mostly for burns, following the attack at 08:20 BST on Friday on the eastbound District Line train from Wimbledon.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said police were "chasing down suspects".

He said the assistance from the military would "provide reassurance" across the country.

Mr Rowley said hundreds of police officers had been "trawling" through CCTV to find those responsible for the attack.

He said detectives were only aware of one device and refused to be drawn on details of the suspects because of the "covert" nature of the operation.

M Rowley also said it was "very routine" in incidents of this kind for IS to say it carried out the attack "whether or not they've had any previous engagement with the individuals involved".

What does terror threat level mean?

By Dominic Casciani, home affairs correspondent

A word of caution about "imminence".

The terror threat level was previously raised to critical in May after Manchester.

Then it was lowered again days later after it became clear to intelligence assessors in the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre that an attack wasn't imminent.

Then we had two more incidents - Borough Market/London Bridge and Finsbury Park.

What does this tell us?

Intelligence is usually fragmentary.

Analysts sometimes only have glimpses or impressions of what they think is going on.

It's an imperfect world.

Pictures taken of the train showed a white bucket on fire inside a supermarket bag, with wires trailing on to the carriage floor. The BBC understands the device had a timer.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said the bomb appeared not to have gone off properly.

Had it worked as intended, it would have killed everyone around it and maimed everyone in the train carriage for life, he said.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump spoke to Prime Minister Theresa May to convey his sympathies for those injured in the terrorist attack, the White House said.

President Trump pledged to continue close collaboration with the UK to stop attacks and combat extremism, the statement added.

US President Donald Trump had tweeted that the "sick and demented" people behind the attack had been in the sights of the Metropolitan Police, prompting Mrs May to say it was not helpful to "speculate" on an ongoing investigation.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is treating 14 people, with a "small number" of them taken to its specialist burns unit.

Four people are being treated by Imperial College Healthcare and three at St George's Hospital.

St Thomas' Hospital in London said it had treated eight patients but they had been discharged.

Mr Rowley asked the public to remain "vigilant", but said people should "not be alarmed".

He said anyone who took pictures or videos at the scene could upload them to ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk.

'I could see a fireball'

Anna Gorniak, who was in the same Tube carriage as the explosion, told the BBC: "I could see a fireball filling the carriage and coming our way. At that moment, I started to run.

"In my mind I was praying, I probably thought for a second, 'That's it, my life is over.'"

Passenger Peter Crowley was sitting in the carriage, travelling from Wimbledon, when the explosion happened.

He said his head was burned by a "really hot intense fireball above my head" and added: "There were people a lot worse than me."

Chris Wildish told BBC Radio 5 live he saw a bucket in a supermarket bag with "low-level flames coming out of it" by the door of the rear carriage.

more n more of these attacks happen. civil liberties will be strongly challenged in western countries.

Yeah, so at worst he's wrong. Doesn't change the fact that it's him at the controls however.

No more or no less than any other US president. These guys are elected to not serve the people of the USA or the world, but of corporations like Northrop and Lockheed Martin. Any benefit to the populace of America is purely by chance, not design.

So far, Trump hasn't committed any serious error while in office, to the tune of George W Bush's WMD claim, or Obama's festering of the ongoing conflict in Syria.

We'll see what happens with regards to North Korea, but colour me skeptical that anything will indeed be shot between the two. Mr. Jong Un has nukes - if Saddam and Gaddafi did too, they wouldn't be dead today.

The police identified a man believed to be the bomber after looking through CCTV footage.

But they have not yet released any further information about his or her identity and a manhunt is still underway.

ISIS have claimed responsibility for the terror attacks saying an "attachment from their group was responsible."

And, police are hunting for the terror suspect across London after claims emerged that he could have planted other explosive devices.

The crude improvised bucket bomb was left on the District line on the Tube and detonated at Parsons Green at 8.20am this morning.

Frightened passengers were left covered in blood, suffering from scorched body parts from the explosion.

Others got crushed in a stampede as they tried desperately to get off the train when the tube doors opened.

At least 29 people have been injured in the blast which was triggered with a timer, police said.

Witnesses described scenes of terror and panic as the blast sent a "fireball" and a "wall of flame" through a District line service at Parsons Green station in West London.

Police suspect the explosion was sparked when an improvised explosive device was detonated, and have launched a huge counter-terrorism investigation alongside MI5.

The device is being forensically examined while detectives are scouring CCTV and examining witness statements for potential leads.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan told LBC radio "there is a manhunt under way as we speak", while Scotland Yard said detectives are making "fast-time" inquiries to establish who was responsible.

Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the "cowardly attack", saying it involved a device "clearly intended to cause significant harm".

And Britain faced up to another terrorist incident, following four attacks already this year.

The Prime Minister said the terror threat level would remain at severe - meaning an attack is highly likely - but would be kept under review.

At 8.30pm GMT, the Prime Minister raised the national threat level from severe to critical.

Theresa May said: “The Joint Terrorism and Analysis Centre, the independent organisation responsible for setting the threat level on the basis of available intelligence, has now decided to raise it from severe to critical.

She said: “This means that a further attack may be imminent. Following JTAC's decision, the police have asked for authorisation from the Secretary of Defence to enact part of the first phase of operation Temperer. This is a well established plan to derive military support to the police.

“Military personnel are going to replace police officers on guard duty at certain protected sights that are accessible to the public.

"The public will see more armed police officers on the transport network and on our streets providing extra protection and this is a proportionate and sensible step which will provide extra reassurances and protection while the investigation progresses.”

She then urged the public to go about their “business in a normal way.”

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, the country's most senior counter-terrorism officer, said "many urgent inquiries" are ongoing.

He said: "We now assess this was a detonation of an improvised explosive device."

Asked if it was clear whether the person responsible was on the train at the time, Mr Rowley said: "It's very much a live investigation and we are following down the lines of inquiry as I said."

At 8.55pm GMT, Mr Rowley added: “We’re making excellent progress at the moment. It is a very complex investigation that continues at speed.”

The Met chief said that he has hundreds of police officers trawling through CCTV footage to catch the bomber.

At least 77 images and videos have been sent in by members of the public.

The improvised explosive device has been made safe on the tube.

He also said that the military would be on the streets in a bid to protect the public.

He did not release any further details on any potential suspects.

Shocking pictures after many people have been injured after an explosion on Tube train at Parsons Green, London

Mr Rowley said Londoners can expect to see an "enhanced police presence" and called on anyone with information to contact authorities as a matter of urgency.

The blast comes as the UK remains on high alert following four terrorist attacks so far this year.

Authorities have foiled 19 plots since the middle of 2013 - including six since the Westminster atrocity in March.

And, the incident comes a day after figures showed terror-related arrests in Britain have hit a new record high, with suspects held at a rate of more than one every day.

Police and MI5 are running 500 investigations involving 3,000 individuals at any one time, while there are also 20,000 former "subjects of interest" whose risk must be kept under review.

Steven Roberts, a former deputy assistant police commissioner for the Metropolitan Police told Sky News: “We’re very fortunate because the bomb maker was incompetent. The worst case scenario could have been a huge mass casualty scenario. We should all thank our lucky stars that this was not the case.

“My former colleagues will work outwards from the bomb itself, the bomb, because it didn’t fully detonate, will have a whole series of clues in it - how was it made? Possibly even finger prints on the bucket and the bag, they’ll interview all of the witnesses that were on the train.

“What did they see? Did they see someone bringing that bag onto the train? They’ll be looking at CCTV from the train itself and trying to get good images of the person who put the bomb on the train.

Parsons Green terror attackPA
Forensic teams are combing through the evidence on the train after the attack
“And, then work out further from that to trace where that person got on the train and where that person got off the train. And then, it’s a matter of skimming through the CCTV on the stations where that person has exited and entered.

“And then to the broader community right out to the public CCTV to check on whether or not he passed various cameras on the streets or buses. So, there is a lot that can be done to get good images of a person.

He added that they can trawl mobile phone footage to identify the suspect and then launch a manhunt for him or others who may have helped him or known what was going on.

“We can’t presume that the bomb maker was the bomb planter,” he added.

The installation of CCTV cameras on the London Underground network could play a key role in finding the perpetrator of the Parsons Green explosion.

S7 trains such as the one involved in Friday's incident have video cameras installed inside all seven carriages.

There are a total of more than 12,000 cameras across London Underground's stations and trains.

The footage is managed and recorded locally, although British Transport Police say they can also view much of it at their hub to "develop intelligence about particular locations and suspects".

CCTV can allow them to "identify and follow suspects" and provide "powerful evidence in court", according to the force.

Detectives could scour footage from the tens of thousands of cameras across London as a whole in a bid to trace whoever is behind the blast.

As police work hard to track down the suspects behind the attack, a spat broke out between US president Donald Trump and Theresa May after he claimed that the perpetrators of the Parsons Green Tube bombing had been "in the sights" of Scotland Yard.

After chairing a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergencies committee, the Prime Minister said it was not "helpful" to speculate on what was an ongoing investigation.

She said the police and security services were still working to identify those responsible for the attack on the packed commuter train.

The president's intervention threatened to place fresh strain on the US-UK intelligence-sharing relationship which has come under pressure a number of times since he entered the White House.

In a trademark tweet issued within hours of the blast, Mr Trump wrote: "Another attack in London by a loser terrorist.

"These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive!"

The Metropolitan Police said the US president's comments - which did not correspond with any information released by the UK authorities - were "unhelpful" and "pure speculation".

In Downing Street, Mrs May said: "I never think it's helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation.

"The police and security services are working to discover the full circumstances of this cowardly attack and to identify all those responsible."

To be 18 and have so many possibilities open for you, this guy chose to be a terrorist.

Parsons Green bombing: Third arrest over Tube attack

A third man has been arrested in connection with Friday's Tube attack in Parsons Green.

The 25-year-old was arrested in Newport, Wales, Scotland Yard confirmed.

On Saturday an 18-year-old man was detained at Dover port and a 21-year-old believed to be Syrian Yahyah Farroukh was arrested in Hounslow.

A homemade bomb partially exploded in a train at Parsons Green station, injuring 30 people in rush hour.

The 25-year-old was arrested at 19:08 BST on Tuesday under section 41 of the Terrorism Act.

Police are now searching an address in Newport.

Metropolitan Police Commander Dean Haydon said: "This continues to be a fast-moving investigation.

"A significant amount of activity has taken place since the attack on Friday.

"We now have three men in custody and searches are continuing at four addresses."

The Met's Counter-Terrorism Command was supported by the Welsh Extremism and Counter-Terrorism Unit.

You feel for the foster couple who took the refugee boy in and now are repaid like this

That's what I am worried about in Canada. Trudo allowed so many of these refugees in and now the demographics of Canada has changed. Sooner or later, one of these extremists will blow something up in Canada and the ungrateful and namakhalal supporters of extremists in Canada will blame foriegn policies of Canada rather than blaming the extremists as usual. And who will suffer the most. The brown looking guys!!

The problem with European refugee crisis was that Germany opened the door without any proper vetting. There could have been basic vetting done in Turkey or at the border countries but Merkel was too headstrong. Now you have the situation where a number of young men have entered Europe and you don't know how many of them are really from Syria.

Canada from what I know was getting in families from the refugee camps. A genuine refugee with his family is much less likely to carry out a terror attack as opposed to these jobless young men.

For the guys who blame the foreign policy, you will find such nutcases everywhere. That's the luxury of free speech which the west grants them and they would never have it in the religious system they dream of. Anyway almost all educated, successful Muslims I have met, have the same views/concerns on this crisis as the vast majority of us, non Muslims.

An 18-year-old man is appearing in court this afternoon, Friday, 22 September, charged in connection with the Parsons Green tube terrorist attack.
