Stokes has opened up about his lingering animosity towards ECB officials

Lord Patel, the Yorkshire chairman, is understood to be the England & Wales Cricket Board official that Ben Stokes told to “f--- off” on the night of the World Cup final in July 2019.

Patel was, at the time, a board member at the ECB and it is claimed Stokes was angered because he thought Patel had taken a hard line against him over his street fight in Bristol.

Stokes reveals in his Amazon documentary, Phoenix from the Ashes, which is released on Friday, his lingering animosity towards some ECB officials over the Bristol affair, particularly those he felt did not stand by him and wanted him banned.

It was reported at the time in 2017 that Patel had been particularly upset by the footage of the Bristol fight and wanted to come down hard on Stokes. After Stokes was acquitted, Patel later denied he had taken a strong line on the issue.

Since then Patel has left the ECB and taken over as chair of Yorkshire in the wake of the Azeem Rafiq scandal.

“If this person did not know how I felt towards them then, they did know the night of the World Cup final,” Stokes says in the documentary.

The ECB did not have prior viewing of the documentary before its premiere in London on Monday. Normally the board has a veto and vets any works under the name of a centrally contracted player such as books and newspaper columns. But Stokes and the film makers were allowed to put together the documentary without it being seen by the ECB’s legal team.

The documentary lays bare Stokes’ relationship with ECB officials and how it fractured after the Bristol incident. “I was let down by a few people and a few of them wear a suit as well,” he says. “It is still there and always will be.”

Stokes also reveals that he is taking medication for anxiety due to ongoing mental-health issues as he continues to struggle with the death of his father.

The current England Test captain is now a passionate advocate on mental-health issues after taking a break from the game last year. In the film, he reveals it was the death of his father, Ged, his anger and guilt over a story in the Sun about the murder of his half-siblings before he was born and the pressures of playing international cricket and dealing with injury.

“I’ve never spoke about this stuff,” Stokes says. “I was catastrophising quite badly about stuff. I never thought I would be on medication to help me for that kind of stuff. I am not embarrassed or ashamed to say it because I needed the help at the time.

“But it’s not done just because I’m back playing. I still speak to the doc, not as regularly, and I’m still taking medication every day. It’s an ongoing process.”

Given the severity of what happened, to then swear at an official, is not good indicator of character. That said, Rafiq did get away with antisemitism.

Stokes generally isn’t a very friendly person. I’ve noticed this a few times at cricket matches. The other England players are overall very friendly and would go out of their way to meet and take pictures with kids. Stokes you could always tell is concealing some kind of rage that is ticking to explode

Clearly got deep psychological problems which suggest he may be an inevitable liability. Such volatility isn't helpful and surely medication is affecting his game ?.

And this is someone entrusted with his country's captaincy.

Pretty poor this.

What do you think would happen to a captain from India or Pakistan if he did this?

Sacked. If not banned for sometime.

Pandya and Rahul were banned for some months for appearing in a Tv show and making comments filled with sexual innuendoes.

Mind you, that show still runs and Bollywood celebs appear on it and make worst comments.

Ok seems Lord Patel has denied all this as per a news site:

"I have only met Ben once in my life - It was in a lift at the Ageas Bowl before a match against India in 2018. I wished him luck and he said 'thanks very much'.

"I've no recollection of asking for a selfie with him – it's not really the sort of thing I do – and certainly no memory of him swearing at me. If anything like that had happened, I wouldn't have been able to sleep. I would have felt compelled to find out why he was so upset and resolve any misunderstanding."

"I joined the ECB board July 2015. So, when the Bristol incident took place, I was a relatively junior member of that board."

"The idea that I was making all the big decisions is absurd. Andrew Strauss, who was director of cricket at the time, made most of the cricket-related decisions, while Tom Harrison, the chief executive, spoke to Ben on an almost daily basis. We also had the likes of Colin Graves, Richard Thompson, Peter Wright and Andy Nash on the board. How on earth does anyone think I was going to overrule all of them?"

"My background is in social work. So my significant involvement in board discussions at the time involved ensuring Ben had the support he needed."

"I do find it revealing and unsettling that the one person of colour on the ECB board at the time – I was actually the first Asian person to serve on the ECB board - has been blamed for supposedly wanting to punish Ben. I'm very disappointed that the ECB haven't put out a statement to refute this.""

"I suppose I would ask: why now? It just seems as if every day there is another story in one of three newspapers that is designed to discredit me or Azeem. And most of them are complete rubbish. On this occasion, the paper didn't even put the allegation to me before publication, which is surely a failure of process."

"Most people who love Yorkshire cricket have been incredibly supportive," Patel said. "But there's a small group who are desperately resisting change and doing all they can to fight back. The racist letters and emails I've received… they really have been appalling.

"Will I quit? Look, I never sought to be chair of Yorkshire and there will come a time in the not too distant future when I do stand down.

"But I have a responsibility to finish the job I started. I have to oversee the appointment of the new CEO, which we expect to do next month. I have to complete the refinancing of the debt [owed to the Colin Graves Trusts and the bank] and I have to get us through the disciplinary hearings. This club is going in the right direction. This won't stop us.

"Yes, there have been some tough days. And yes, there have been moments when I wondered whether I could go on. But every time I think like that, I remember the determination Azeem showed. There were times when nobody would listen to him and times it seemed everyone was against him. But he kept going and, by doing so, he gave us a chance to make this club, this sport, more inclusive and better than it's ever been.

"That's a powerful example to me. I owe it to him, to everyone of colour, to everyone who loves Yorkshire cricket and wants it to be inclusive and welcoming, to see this job through."

Respect to Lord Patel for quickly dismissing these reports.

Telegraph should officially apologise to Stokes.
