Manchester City win the EFL Cup/Carabao Cup 2018/2019, defeating Chelsea on penalties

Manchester City have eased into the fourth round of the EFL Cup on a record-breaking night for Fulham.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus, Riyhad Mahrez and Phil Foden saw the Premier League champions saunter to a 3-0 victory over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium, with Foden heavily involved in the opening two goals before putting the gloss on a superb individual performance with one of his own.

Fulham meanwhile saw off Championship side Millwall in a London derby at The Den with Cryus Christie’s superb long-range strike sealing a 3-1 win after Tom Elliot had pulled back for the hosts.

The big story of the night came however when 15-year-old Harvey Elliot came off the bench for his Cottagers’ debut, becoming their youngest ever player and the youngest to ever feature in the League Cup.

Crystal Palace have found goals hard to come by in the Premier League but had no such problems away to West Brom with Andros Townsend scoring perhaps the goal of the evening.

The winger started the move in his own half, breaking forward before finding the back of the net from 30 yards out before scoring a third late on after Patrick van Aanholt’s 76thminute strike.

Queens Park Rangers’ brief cup run is over after a 2-0 defeat away to Blackpool while Bournemouth suffered a scare at home to Bournemouth, needing a last minute Callum Wilson goal to see off the the Championship side.

Derby County secured the result of the evening with Frank Lampard getting the better of former boss Jose Mourinho as his side secured a penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United.

Closely fought contest but a Hazard spectacular goal wins it for the blues. Congrats to Chelsea.

Not too bothered to come out of this competition as a LFC fan.

After Pak's loss this completed a miserable day. From the little I watched Liverpool at least deserved a draw. Sturridge missed an open goal and hit the bar as well. Hazard's goal was worthy of winning any match.

Carabao Cup draw: Liverpool out as Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City wait to discover opponents

Liverpool were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea as Eden Hazard's sensational strike completed the Blues' comeback at Anfield.

West Ham, meanwhile, battered League Two Macclesfield 8-0 at the London Stadium, while Arsenal overcame Brentford 4-1.

Nottingham Forest held off a fightback from Stoke at the City ground, while Tottenham knocked out Watford on penalties.

Chelsea, West Ham, Arsenal, Forest and Tottenham join Bournemouth, Blackpool, Burton, Crystal Palace, Derby, Fulham, Leicester, Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Norwich in the fourth round following their respective wins on Tuesday night.

Fans of all the clubs left in the Carabao Cup are eager to discover who their team will face next.

But the draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup will not take place until Saturday night.

The EFL, who organise the competition, have set it up to be shown on Quest’s EFL On Quest show.

The programme begins at 9pm and host Colin Murray will be joined in the studio by specialist EFL pundits.

EFL On Quest will also feature highlights from the weekend’s football action.

The show’s normal running time has been extended by 15 minutes to make room for the draw and it is scheduled finish at 10.45pm.

Quest can be found on Sky channel 144, Virgin Media channel 172 and Freeview channel 37.

EFL On Quest can also be streamed on Quest’s on-demand service called QuestOD.

EFL Cup: Hazard consigns Liverpool to season’s first defeat; Arsenal and Tottenham advance

Eden Hazard’s majestic solo strike capped a thrilling Chelsea fightback in their 2-1 win at Liverpool, while Tottenham survived a penalty shoot-out to beat Watford in the League Cup third round on Wednesday.

Arsenal advanced to the last 16 with a 3-1 win over Championship side Brentford, while West Ham demolished fourth-tier Macclesfield in an 8-0 rout that ranked as their biggest victory for 35 years.

But it was the drama at Anfield that stole the spotlight as Chelsea became the first team to stop Liverpool winning this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had won seven consecutive matches in all competitions and the Premier League leaders were on course for number eight when Daniel Sturridge’s brilliant effort put them ahead in the second half.

But Emerson Palmieri bagged Chelsea’s late equaliser before Belgium star Hazard danced through the Liverpool defence to notch the winner with five minutes left.

It was an impressive comeback from Maurizio Sarri’s men, giving them valuable momentum ahead of Saturday’s more significant Premier League clash between the teams at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are currently in third place, two points behind Liverpool after an unbeaten start to the season.

“It’s a fantastic goal. Not only the beauty of it but for the time he scored it,” Chelsea assistant boss Gianfranco Zola said of Hazard.

“Not only is he one of the best in the Premier League, but he is one of the best the world. He’s remarkable.”

Klopp added: “I think the first goal is offside. They watched it and didn’t think it was offside. We have to take it.

“This is good preparation for Saturday but we have to defend better.”

Sturridge gave Liverpool the lead in spectacular fashion after 58 minutes.

Naby Keita’s shot was pushed out by Willy Caballero and Sturridge threw himself into an audacious scissor kick that flashed into the net for his third goal of the season.

Chelsea equalised in the 79th minute as Italy defender Emerson tapped in after Simon Mignolet could only parry Ross Barkley’s powerful header.

That goal needed VAR to confirm there were no Chelsea players offside, but there was no doubt about the visitors’ 85th minute winner.

Taking possession on the right edge of the Liverpool area, Hazard embarked on a superb, twisting run that ended with a blistering shot past Mignolet.

Temporarily homeless Tottenham ignored their unfamiliar surroundings to see off Watford after a 2-2 draw at Stadium MK.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been playing their home games at Wembley while their delayed new arena is built, but because the national stadium was not ready after the Anthony Joshua boxing match on Saturday, they were forced to borrow Milton Keynes Dons’ ground.

Christian Kabasele’s foul on Alli in the 82nd minute led to the Watford substitute’s dismissal and a penalty for Tottenham.

England star Dele Alli picked himself up to score the spot-kick before Erik Lamela put Tottenham ahead four minutes later.

Etienne Capoue equalised in the 89th minute, but Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga saved two penalties in the shoot-out.

Then Alli, named captain on his return to the club where he started his career, fittingly scored the decider.

In their first meeting with Brentford since 1947, Danny Welbeck headed Arsenal into the lead after just five minutes at the Emirates Stadium and the forward struck again in the 37th minute.

Alan Judge got one back for Brentford with a deflected free-kick in the 58th minute.

But Alexandre Lacazette’s 90th minute goal ensured Unai Emery’s side held on for their sixth successive win in all competitions.

At the London Stadium, West Ham gave Macclesfield, who currently sit bottom of the entire Football League, a lesson in ruthless finishing.

Michail Antonio, Robert Snodgrass with a brace, Lucas Perez, Ryan Fredericks, Angelo Ogbonna and Grady Diangana, who also struck twice, were all on the scoresheet.

Nottingham Forest eased through with a 3-2 win over fellow second tier side Stoke at the City Ground.

Carabao Cup: Arsenal to host Spurs in quarter-finals

Arsenal have been drawn against north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The Gunners, last season's beaten finalists, will host their neighbours at Emirates Stadium during the week starting 17 December.

League One Burton Albion, the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, go to Championship side Middlesbrough.

Chelsea host Bournemouth, while Leicester or Southampton will play the winner of Manchester City and Fulham.

A rearranged date and kick-off time for Leicester's tie against Southampton at King Power Stadium has yet to be confirmed.

The match, originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, was postponed following the death of Foxes owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter crash.

Manchester City, who beat Arsenal in last season's final to win their first trophy under Pep Guardiola, play Fulham at Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

Arsenal and Spurs will meet twice at the Emirates in little over a fortnight as the teams also play in the Premier League on 2 December.

Chelsea were dominant but Spurs still won 1-0. I think this is good for Spurs as they faced a lot of pressure in 2nd half but still held on without conceding, so if I had to pick who would go through, I would just vote for Spurs, but very narrowly.

Wow 9-0. Never heard anything like that.

Burton's entire squad costs 700k, 500 of that on a single player who is coincidentally their record signing. Their stadium holds about 7,000, City's academy ground holds more.

Yes, they had a nightmare, but this City side have been ripping apart far far better sides than Burton. Obviously the sense of occasion got to them a bit, that combined with Pep treating the tie as a normal game and not a kickabout and wanting to kill the tie as quick as possible combined to produce that outcome.

Its a shame but its not a surprise, Burton still deserve immense credit for making it so far. Were only relegated from the Championship last season in stoppage time, which would have been a second time they'd stayed up. Punching way above their weight.
