Manish Pandey, after doing so well in domestic cricket & ipl from 2009, finally got a chance after 6 hard years and took it with both hands scoring 71 on ODI debut

I was hoping to dig out a old thread, but couldn't find any thread on him, so making a new one

Manish Pandey is still only 25 and he can take the 1 vacant middle order spot in ODIs & maybe even in Tests. Can bat in all gears as well, being both defensive & attacking

I remember when he made that 100 in IPL at the age of 19 then disappeared....

He didn't disappear. He has been playing for India 'A' in some series. Manish Pandey should have debuted in 2010 itself, but good to see him debuting at 25, rather than waiting more like Badrinath/Jadhav who got their debuts around 29, although Jadhav hit a 100 in yesterday's match

Oh please.

Stop hyping Manish Pandey.

Unreliable batsman. Will blow hot and cold and suddenly out of the blue destroy you in an important match.

But not consistent.

Jadhav has great stats in domestic but let's see how he goes in internationals.

The biggest issue for Indian batting is that we still haven't found a replacement for Yuvi at No 4.

That's the biggest concern. Dhoni will play at No 4 for now but dunno how much gas is left in his tank.

Yuvi was unreliable too, for a big part of his career. We need to give chances to young players like Pandey.

He debuted very early and was inconsistent for a while and picked up.

Pandey has been playing for a while now (domestics, IPL) and is still inconsistent.

Maybe he will cement his place but right now...nothing can be said.

Clutch player Yuvi was, has played great under pressure compared to the current Indian lot.

May be international exposure might give him the right motivation but defn not the batting superstar that is being predicted in this thread.

Let him play for at least an year before hailing him as the next superstar. Consistency is his biggest bane, if he can overcome that he will have a good international career.

Yes, but for a large part of his career he averaged in late 20s and early 30s.

Averaged under 30 after 120 games.

And that brings us to the question...

Should we give more chance to youngsters for allowing them to groom under the likes of Kohli and Dhoni?? #BD

As I said above Yuvi averaged under 30 after 120-122 games, was nowhere consistent, didn't even have a particularly stellar domestic record, but he was persisted with, got grooming under stars like Ganguly, Dravid and SRT, and we eventually reaped benefits. He was picked up at 19ish and given chances for the next decade.

Of course, we need to give him and others chances.

My point was about hyping him.

Players mature and we need to take that into account.

Yuvraj (as a youngster) was a huge match winner which is why he was persisted (debut performance in Champions Trophy where he won a game for us against the invincible Aussies). He was given a rope cos he had the game for international cricket and was very young.

Pandey has been getting exposure and playing for a while. I am all for giving him chances but he needs to get consistent in the chances he gets (domestic, IPL, etc). He is 25 now.

Ya, OP is definitely overhyping him, but that's how threads are made on PP. I am guilty as well.

Manish Pandey

Just like the Rohit Sharma thread I started years ago, starting another one here.. Has India unearthed another great batting talent ? Looks that way so far :kohli

An explosive batsman at No 4 and you can see the effects.

Even if we had lost, you could see what it does to have a player who can strike fast at No 4.

Before today's inning, I wasn't sure of Pandey's temperament to build an inning (thought of him as someone who had limited strike rotating capabilities i.e., either tuk tuk or boom with no middle ground). He has proven me very wrong.

Wasnt this kid also the first ever 100 scorer in IPL ? I know it was IPL but still, his ability was always there and I said it during last game's thread, India needed him in the last game. Wouldve won the last game had Pandey played...

oh plz, there was nothing special in the kid in my opinion.

I think he just went unnoticed by the Australian bowlers, who were more concerned about Sharma and Dhoni. He did score a 100, but as he plays more cricket, this kid will get exposed sooner or later.

Yes scored a IPL century in 2009.

Thats the key factor here.

The worth of His innings got increased by 100 points because of the match winning six that dhoni hit and the fact that he got out the next ball.

Awwwww. :))

Manish Pandey will be sad seeing this.

True.

But if Dhoni had hit a run a ball 30 which was totally doable in that pitch, then Pandey would have been lauded for rescuing us from a certain loss and looked equally good. ;-)

First ever Indian to score 100 in IPL

McCullum scored the first IPL100 in the opening match of IPL 1 itself

So then Manish at 5, Raina at 6, Jadeja at 7..This should be middle order after Dhoni's retirement.

Pandey has done this so often for Karnataka its surprising he dint get a chance much earlier . I have always maintained that his game is very unorthodox and an unusual technique , but there is something about him he still manages to score heavily . Plays better in the longer format , which is again a surprise . Lets see how far he goes as a International player .

Thats true as well. But i was pointing towards that last over. That six made the equation very very easy and dhoni's dismissal ensured that manish get a chance to finish off a very easy 6 off 4 balls which made his innings look far more superior than it already was. It was herculean effort regardless.

No I think it should be
1.Rahane/dhawan
2.Talented
3. Kohli
4. Pande
5.WK/BAT
6.Raina
7.Sir

Dhawan
Rohit
Kohli
Pandey
Sarfaraz
Raina
Pandya
Hooda
Shami
Aaron /jadeja (depending on conditions )
Bumrah

I guess this will put Rahane out of ODI side again. Unfair but India just can't afford a player like Rahane @ 4. He'd have lost us the game today.

Pandey is just what India needs at 4. Has all the gears. He's quite the powerful hitter as well, didn't get to see much of it today.

For some reason, I agree with this. Earlier Indian finishers like Yuvraj and Dhoni had something special about them. Pandey in comparison looks quite underwhelming to me.

I am happy to see him in the team, but my expectations aren't too high.

What a class player! Man i am so jealous of the indian talent

I would agree with CJs lineup actually . Rahane needs to be given an extended run as opener imo.And regardless if conditions, is trust jadeja over any seamer in LOIs. He's economical enough. And who is sarfraz ?

Mccullum hit 158 in the first IPL match

There was a domestic batsman that amit used to post a lot about. Any of the regulars here know who it was. A very correct sort of batsman.

first INDIAN player to do it.

This will probably India's best XI we could field

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
Pandey
Raina
N. Ojha
H. Pandya
Jadeja
Ashwin
Bumrah
Shami

Saw the highlights after getting up. That four off the third delivery in the last over.. What a time to pull it off, and under tremendous pressure too! I think i have a new name for this lad..

If this Kung Fu Pandey can start keeping wickets a la Dravid.. then Dhoni will feel some serious heat.

What a class player! Man i am so jealous of ..

Dekhein, nazar na lagayein aap..

The RCB and Indian U-19 pleayer i guess he meant him too early imo.

I think we should give him a chance of he's actually good with the bat. Our U-19 players are quite talented but lose the plot in domestic. I don't rate Ranji at all these days. I think we should just throw them in the deep end and hope they learn while playing international cricket. Something we should've done with Unmukt :(

Maybe but Unmukt was given chances with IPL as well he didnt perform but i guess like Dhawan or Rahane he will make a comeback after 25 if he has the hunger.

He isn't what you call a power hitter. He could finish the match because he was set. When he had to come in the death overs, he struggled to middle the ball. On par with Rahane when it comes to playing attacking cricket.

He is what Asad Shafiq dreams to become at #4.

Asad Shafiq will complete the transformation into Manish Pandey in a few hours time vs NZ.
