Recently i heard many good stuff about this lad of his county performance.
he is really really (in misbah voice) bowling fast and furious im sure the likes of malik and hafeez will have no chance against this lad.

Wood was England's most threatening bowler in UAE. Along with Broad, he's England's best bowler.

He'll be successful on any pitch because he gets lift and reverse.

The fact that he most likely won't play all 5 games will probably be a bit of a let off.

Yeah he bowled with a lot of heart in the UAE and got it to reverse. Was quite pacy too for a fairly short run-up.

Hopefully he ends hafeez's and malik's career. Mind you he is a pretty decent bowler.

I never understood how Finn and Jake Ball keep Mark Wood out of the test team

He's been injured most of the summer.

I saw him play 4 day match a week before the test series started. And he took a 4fer

Maybe wasn't match fit for the first test but by the second or third he was certainly ready, especially as Finn was bowling rubbish all series. Even Rahat out bowled him !

His first serious 4 day match of the season didn't start until the day after the 3rd test started and he only bowled 14 overs in the game. He played 1 FC game before that, a tour game against Sri Lanka A but he played as a specialist batsman.

Good bowler. Good Action. Good Pace. Good Body Structure. Good Line and Length.

Like it :yk2

England have plenty of choices and they use them well. To rotate the fast bowlers give them much needed rest.
Our management is killing the bowlers by over bowling them

He should replace Broad for the Indian test matches. Stokes, Woakes, Wood, Anderson backed up by whatever spinner that they can find.

This guy is on fire at t20 finals day. Was all over Root constantly having him playing and missing, just cleared up Jonny Bairstow with a 91mph yorker first ball to him and then got Garry Ballance caught at leg gully off an absoloutely stunning catch from Paul Collingwood.

He has boosted his pace big time after the injury, this is how you make an ideal comeback.

But, Sharjeel, Babar and Rizwan will smash him anyways :23:

Gonna call it now, this guys gonna be one of the best bowlers in the world if he stays fit in the coming years. Incredibly likable guy as well.

And he will only get better.

I wish him and hope that he won't be the next Pat Cummins. WRT fast bowlers, That lad was the best young talent of last decade but injuries haven't let him settle any bit.

Stay Fit Mark Wood. World cricket needs You.

hope he ends fake allrounders career.

He's got good pace, nice run up and vicious bouncer.

The only issue I have how much movement he gets with conventional swing or off the wicket. You need that to be a successful Test bowler.

But he will be decent at the limited overs formats no doubt.

Mark Wood is FAAAST!!

93mph!!

Nothing like seeing tearaway speedster

So what ? We have seen 95 miles + bowlers as well Lee Akhtar Shaun Tait and list goes on.

90+ mph are rare now since Tait went down around 2010

Milne is only one close to that but he is injure dand even he doesnt go 90+ every ball

What's funny is the run-up...it's so short for a bowler bowling at 90mph+ it's laughable. The boy reminds me of Simon Jones. Comfortable runup but great up body strength and follow through. The issues are going to be injuries though.

Tymal Mills looks even better btw. Such a good up-and-coming bowler.

And what a surprise, a recurrence of his ankle injury causing him to miss the Bangladesh series.

Wood's problem is that his action places so much stress on that left ankle. Until he can resolve this issue he'll be another Simon Jones. Immeasurable potential and ability but cannot get on the cricket field enough for his career to make a meaningful impact.

He has to make an adjustment to his landing. His ankle undergoes alot of stress and moving forward it will always be an issue unless he rectifies it.

Since He is a " FAST " bowler so he will have to make the adjustments but it will be very difficult to change something he has been doing for 10, 12 years.

Mark Wood ruled out of England's Tour of India with ankle injury

Mark Wood has been ruled out of the tour to India and is set for a third operation on his ankle inside 12 months.

Wood has been diagnosed with a stress fracture to his ankle and no date has been set for his return but the England medical staff have confirmed he will not play a part in the five Test tour to India.

England have not ruled him out of the one-day series in India in January at this stage but a more likely date for his return is the short trip to the West Indies in March.

The good news for Wood is scans have confirmed the problem is unrelated to the chronic injury that saw him miss most of last winter and the first half of the summer. Wood had an operation to remove a bone spur in his ankle and only fully returned to action in July.

But this injury is a stress fracture he sustained while playing for Durham against Surrey in September when he bowled 35 overs as his county fought against relegation. His efforts were in vain however as Durham were later relegated as punishment for financial problems.

“Woody showed his commitment to Durham with the way he bowled 35 overs in that Surrey game, and we know now that he also showed a hell of a lot of courage and resilience,” said Ben Langley, the England physio. “His foot and ankle swelled up hugely during the game, which was obviously worrying, and then we were perplexed when nothing significant showed up on the first scan. It was only when we got him in for a second scan that we discovered he’d been playing on despite having fractured a bone.

“So it’s a different injury to what he’s had the previous surgery for, and there’s no reason to think that when he’s had this bone fragment removed, he won’t be able to get back to bowling as well he has for Durham, England Lions and England in the second half of the 2016 summer.”

There is no update on James Anderson’s fitness but he too is facing the prospect of missing the India Test series with a shoulder injury that first flared up last summer.

His tolerance for pain must be very high or the pills he took were very potent.

I was impressed with this guy on the UAE tour and feel he can be a world class bowler, but he needs to learn more about his body and take care of it.

Completely unrelated but I was pretty impressed with James Hildreth hitting 128 for Somerset a few weeks back despite suffering a clean break in his ankle whilst in single figures!

Wood could be a big loss for the test matches his winter, I thought he'd be a key part of the team on the wickets we're likely to face. Would be a shame if he can't make a good career.

Is this a theme in county cricket, players playing through injuries?

If it is, then it is a bad habit and it can lengthen the injury from a few weeks to months.

Who knows, maybe Wood could have recovered in time for the upcoming Test series, had he not aggravated the fracture.

In Hildreths case it was the last game of the season and his team were going after the county championship so he evidently weighed up his priorities.

In Woods case Durham were safe (points wise) and not going for anything so I can only assume they completely misread the injury.

This is why Wood needs to learn more about himself and should learn from this experience, so he can avoid taking risks like this again.

Good luck to him.

Great to see him back. And what a spell.

In this test match Wood has shown how important it his to have even one bowler with such pace.

We surely need to work on Amir Bashir, Mohammad Talha, Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah etc

Also its not just the pace which Wood has shown but also the direction the pace need to go in. No point in having pace like Wahab, Sami or even Shinwari if your lines and lengths are all wrong.

Medium pacers like Curran are not going to do much in certain conditions. It’s is vital to have a express pacer who can trouble the batsman.

Wood has produced performances like this in the past, although this may be his best. The issue is his consistency, if he can maintain this for test after test, then England can use him with more confidence.

Curran’s time will come. He will put on a yard of pace as his body gets stronger and will be a key England player. When Anderson retires I can see an attack of Broad / Wood / Stokes / Curran or Woakes.

I concur about pace though. England come a cropper overseas when they go in with four medium pacers. A quick bowler lifts morale too, it’s good to have someone in the team who can give a bit of hurt back to the oppo.

What a spell.

Though i still feel he will not be able to repeat this. He has always been inconsistent.

Would love to be proved wrong though.

These 95 mph bowlers are rare.

Very happy for him...he looked crestfallen the last time I saw him vs. pakistan, when england lost that game.

Mark Wood, the England pacer, was delighted after clinching the first five-wicket haul of his international career on day two of the third and final Test against the Windies.

After England were bowled out for 277 on the second morning, Wood shouldered a bulk of the bowling responsibility in the second innings. He returned 5/41 in just 8.2 overs and crippled the Windies batting line-up.

"It's a day I'll never forget. Any time it's not going quite right I can look back on this game and have fond memories," said the pacer after the day's play on Sunday, 10 February.

"I've had some horrible dark days with injuries and things like confidence and self-belief. I thought in my own mind I was an England player but I hadn't shown it. I felt like today I've shown I am an England player."

Wood's scalps in St Lucia included Shai Hope, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer and Shannon Gabriel. The 28-year-old was pivotal in restricting the hosts to 154, as England capped the day they started poorly with a 142-run lead under their belt.

"It's nice to show some people who've probably doubted me in the past," added Wood. "I've even doubted myself that I can do it, but I wouldn't say I'm out of the woods yet.

"[There have been] times where I had no confidence slamming my front foot down. There were times when I was desperate to do well, trying my hardest, but it just wasn't quite happening for us but luckily today is a day when it's clicked."

Wood travelled to the UAE with England Lions to face Pakistan A last year. This helped him get into a good vein of form, as he started the tour with five wickets in the only Test. He continued to impress, claiming seven wickets in the subsequent limited-overs games.

"I felt I was actually here on merit," he added. "I felt because I'd done well there [in UAE] it merited my spot being here and this time I wasn't picked on potential, I deserved it."

The seamer altered his run-up leading up to the Caribbean tour, a move that has helped him exert more pace on the ball. He clocked the fastest delivery of the series – 152.24 kph – during his spell.

"I just don't feel like I have to force it as much," he said. "I'm still hitting the floor, but with more momentum, more rhythm. Before, I had to get up to speed quick and to get up the high pace, I had to muscle it a little bit whereas now I feel in more rhythm, and I can get in the spin of things and today it just clicked.

"That [speed] was past expectations. I think it was the adrenaline. But I wasn’t really looking at the speed gun, to be honest. I felt in good rhythm and all I could see really was the batter. I was particularly pleased with the Hetmyer wicket. He’s a huge talent and to get him out, where he didn’t look comfortable, was really pleasing.”

In the past England used him bowling short stuff round the wicket as a stock bowler.

Now England have to use him in full-speed four-over bursts over the wicket, like Australia did with the in-form Johnson, while Broad etc. do the donkey work.

England need to find a way to keep him fit. If he plays at the World Cup, he will give England the X factor with the ball.

England Paceman Wood Out For The Season

London, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - APP - 2nd Aug, 2019 ) :England fast bowler Mark Wood will play no part in the ongoing Ashes series after suffering a left knee injury while helping his country win the World Cup last month.

The Durham quick helped tournament hosts England win the World Cup for the first time, taking 18 wickets at an average of 25.72.

Wood was not included in England's team for the first Test at Edgbaston currently in progress and was already set to miss the Ashes matches at Lord's and Headingley because of a left side strain he sustained during a World Cup final win over New Zealand.

England announced on Friday that Wood had been struggling with a knee problem as well as a longstanding ankle injury.

"England fast bowler Mark Wood has had left knee surgery to address an injury sustained during the ICC Cricket World Cup," said a team statement.

"The Durham player will continue rehabilitation for this and the left side strain that he sustained in the World Cup final.

"As a result of these injuries, he will be unavailable for any cricket for the remainder of the season."Wood's last Test appearance saw the 29-year-old bowl well during a consolation win over the West Indies earlier this year.

In T20s, he is entering into the Jarden Dernbach territory. Just 8 matches though. Economy rate close to 10.

I'm not worried about his T20 performance. As long as he stays fit and keeps bowling at 94 mph he will take plenty of test wickets.

Fast bowlers including the much vaunted Steyn were clobbered out of the ground and treated like club cricketers. I wouldn't read much into it. T20 is all about the batting.

mediocre t20 and odi bowler

but he is a good test bowler. Injuries ruined him. He has come back strong though. He will be good in SENA conditons. He also did well in u.a.e.

With Archer seems almost unplayable for Australia .

I know it's white ball cricket, but still miffed at England's pathetic rotation policies for the tests. Wood could have proved a handful in the last test at Ahmedabad.

His workload has to be managed especially considering the history of his ankle. England probably felt that its better to play him in the T20's. He didnt do much on the Sl tests either.

He was rapid tonight though. Averaging 147.5 kph. Lightning fast.

I would love to see him lead the England test attack.

Mark Wood is a very good LOI bowler. But as one poster said few weeks ago, in test cricket, he is just a sasta version of Shoaib Akhtar. :yk

You will have to earn a place for a lead fast bowler of your country rather than waiting for anyone's retirement.

And out of today's match after bowling 4 overs at full pace in the last pace. Yeah English think tank knew he wouldn't have lasted even this long had he played the last test. Like I said, they think he is more valuable in white ball cricket and are preserving him for that

If they picked him consistently and gave him the new ball like a sensible team would, he would have been a gun in tests for years.

No, he wouldn't. He has never shown the ability to play 3 or more consecutive tests at full pace. He can't take that kind of workload unless he cuts down o pace and he is pretty innocuous without pace.

Mark Wood is a bowler of extreme pace and enormous potential. He is actually one of the most naturally gifted bowlers that has emerged in our system over the last two decades. He is right up there with Stephen Harmison and Simon Jones in that respect.

But just as Harmison and Jones both underachieved in their careers against their talent levels, for very different and complex reasons, I worry that Wood will ultimately do the same. His run-up is ridiculously long, and his landing is so rough and harsh on his lower body. He will have to be rotated out, rested, rotated back in, and rested again. And so it will go on.

In my opinion Mark Wood will occasionally perform brilliantly across the three international formats and will briefly excite and thrill us all, but in the end, persistent injuries will always haunt him.

Spot on The strain his body goes through by bowling the way he does means he ll never be able to consistently play all formats regularly

He ll have to be managed with the view of extending his career as much as possible

Test cricket will have to take a back seat im afraid Id be surprised if he plays more than 50 tests for england over hus career

Wood is not meant to have a long career, England are better of using him sparingly.

Hey James,

TBF Simon Jones's career was cut short by injury, I don't think he underachieved. If he did not have the injury bug he would have retired as a world class bowler (statwise)...

Onto Wood, I like what I have seen of him, exciting prospect, great pace, will be handful when Indians come down to ENG in the coming months.

Wood is bowling brilliantly and thrillingly again today.

3-13 off 3.3 overs so far, at consistently >90mph and occasionally >95mph pace.

I just hope he can play the next game. lol

Yes hes outstanding, England need to take care of him and unleash him in the big games in the upcoming hectic schedule we have looming.

I think he hit the 150 kph mark a couple of times today, seriously fast pace.

A 156.2kph bouncer was his fastest ball. 96.4mph. Unreal. He is probably our fastest bowler ever. Even Steve Harmison in his pomp did not reach these speeds I don’t think.

I think Harmi could rev up to 93 mph. Got nasty bounce too.

Woods is up their with any one in the history of genuine fast bowling, as for Harmison against Australia in a odi back in 2005 clocked 96 mph.

He is a LOI specialist. Won't be able to survive enough in test cricket.
