A mass brawl erupted in a basketball match between Australia and the Philippines Monday resulting in 13 players being ejected from the court.

Video shows punches, kicks and objects being thrown after a melee broke out with just over four minutes left in the third quarter of the 2019 World Cup qualifying tie.

The Philippines was left with just two eligible players before the match was halted at the end of the third quarter. The final score listed as 89-53 to Australia on the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) website.

"Basketball Australia deeply regrets the incident in tonight's match between the Boomers (Australia) and the Philippines in Manila," read a statement from Basketball Australia chief executive Anthony Moore.

"We are extremely disappointed with what happened and our role in it.
"This is not the spirit in which sport should be played and certainly not in the spirit in which we aim to play basketball.

"We apologize to our fans and will await the penalties to be handed down."

The fight was sparked when Australia player Chris Goulding was shoved to the floor. FIBA has announced it has opened disciplinary proceedings against both teams.

Footage from the Philippine Arena quickly went viral, with Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquaio tweeting a picture of a basketball and a boxing glove.

What on earth :O

Players are flying like Kungfu Pandas.

so the aussie elbowed the phillipino player and that caused the brawl?

Yep for no reason at all the aussie player just went up and elbowed the Phillipino and deliberately started a brawl. They should be banned from international basketball for a couple of years over this.

This is what the NBA is missing!

Good ol' fashioned blunt force trauma that will enforce these players to become tougher and understand what a real "flagrant foul" is.

Could use this for the regular season/playoffs to increase viewership.

so a Push from the phillipino and then a full on elbow to the face from the aussie..mnnh...

This is perhaps the most exciting thing that has ever happened in the sport of basketball :))

What push?? the aussie did if for no reason.

he elbowed the Phillipino in the face..clearly a violent and uncalled for act..clear provocation..not surprised the aussies got a pasting there..I think an elbow is pretty disproportionate compared to a push..

cant imagine a more docile race than Filipinos! Something must have got their goat

I've never been a fan of this sport before watching this video :)) Great stuff from Australia, never stop doing Australian things :yk

My God this is amazing!
We need more of this stuff in sports.

Right on brother!

Enough of this piddly-poddly crap.

Basketball players today, whether in the park or the major leagues, have forgot the art of being "real".

That includes hard-nosed defense, shot-blocking and mental disintegration.

This is perhaps the most exciting thing that has ever happened in the sport of basketball :))

Yours truly once bit somebody on the leg during a second period pick-up game in sixth grade while on defense.

Best day ever. :)

'You absolute SCUMBAG': Account manager named Steve Smith wakes up to find his Twitter profile inundated with misguided abuse from furious cricket fans after cheating scandal

A Twitter user with the same name as disgraced cricketer Steve Smith woke up on Sunday morning to find his social media accounts flooded with messages of abuse.

Steve Smith, a writer for ESPN and account manager for a consultancy agency in Melbourne, was mistaken for the embattled Australian cricket captain.

He posted a collection of abusive tweets that were targeted at the cricketer he was mistaken for on Sunday, taking the messages in his stride with a dose of humour.

'Steve Smith, I don't care how good a batsman you are... Cricket Australia should NEVER allow you on a cricket pitch EVER AGAIN you absolute SCUMBAG,' one wrote.

'My feelings are officially hurt,' he wrote, referencing the hilarious tweet.

Messages such as 'morning you cheat, ball tampering on the agenda today,' took over his Twitter page as cricket fans followed suit and directed their frustration at him.

The mistaken user said he 'totally agreed' with the one of the posts on his social media, making the most of the situation.

'Deliberately cheating is with the ball is no better than taking performance-enhancing drugs,' added another user, again directed to the wrong Steve Smith.

Steve Smith has come under fire after admitting he was instrumental in directing batsman Cameron Bancroft to rub a ball with sticky tape during a Test match.

Fans are demanding the captain gets the sack after the stunt, which was caught on camera and widely condemned by former legends of the game.

Can we get Harbhajan's testimony here :bhajji

The Australians were playing unnecessarily aggressive against the Filipinos according to most witnesses, then one of their players elbowed a Filipino player in the face which is a serious flagrant in the NBA and usually leads to suspensions. Some might point out the Filipino player pushing an aussie player however that is common in basketball and just a foul not a flagrant.

I suspected the Aussie players must have said something derogatory and new revelations confirm that they called them monkeys which is a racial slur and can lead to some serious bans in world sport.

The Australians have been playing dirty so many different aports for far too long and one of their opponents just snapped.

13 players banned, 3 Australians and 8 Philippines players and 2 Philippines coaches.

Australia were fined $135,000 and the Philippines $337,000.

FIBA's finding that no discriminatory or racist language was used by Australian Boomers players, as had been alleged.

"There were no derogatory, discriminatory or racist comments from the Australian players.

The Boomers were cruising to victory with a 79-48 lead before the game descended into farce after Pogoy lashed out at Goulding with an errant elbow.
Kickert's retaliation on Pogoy sparked the all-in brawl, which included punches, elbows, kicks and objects — including a chair — hurled at players.

Seems to have been sparked by a collision between the Filipino and Australian player, where the Filipino was definitely the aggressor, although in most sports that level of contact is quite normal. The Aussie response with the elbow which decked the Filipino is what caused the riot, stepped over from in game rough-housing to physical violence at that point.
