Former Pakistan captain and coach Waqar Younis warned that the roots of fixing still exist in cricket and urged that collective efforts are required to eradicate the menace. Ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) auction for the 2018 edition, Waqar said that spot-fixing has badly damaged the image of Pakistan cricket.

“The roots of fixing are very deep. It still exists at all levels so we need to have joint and concerted efforts to eradicate this menace,” Waqar said while addressing the media during Islamabad United’s press conference.

Waqar who will be the director of Islamabad United for the third edition, also said that he would do special mentoring of young cricketers regarding spot-fixing. “My prime task will be to guide the players on and off the field and tell them how to avoid this malpractice as this can easily derail a good career,” he said.

Waqar added that he is hopeful of full participation from overseas players, in the forthcoming season, will help the cricket governing board (PCB) revive international cricket in Pakistan. Recently, Pakistan hosted World XI for a three-match T20I series which was followed by a lone T20I against Sri Lanka. “With Sri Lanka coming to Lahore, and before that the World XI series and the final of the PSL – that all changed conceptions about Pakistan though we still need to convince the foreign players to tour us and not fear about security,” he concluded.

ISLAMABAD: Former Coach Waqar Younis believes Pak-India series should be revived as it the best cricket rivalries of all time.

Talking to media persons here at a local hotel on Friday, he said Pak-India Cricket series must never be stopped and should be revived.

Speaking about the revival of international cricket in Pakistan, he said having Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches in Karachi will send a positive message to the whole world that Pakistan is a safe country for sports activities.

“World XI and Sri Lankan team’s tour to Pakistan has sent a very positive message to the world that Pakistan is safe for all kinds of sports,” he remarked.

Waqar, who is also PSL team Islamabad United’s bowling coach said he is hopeful that his team would do well in the third edition of the league.

“Shaheen Afridi and Muhammad Hussain are the two new talented bowlers that have come to fore,” he said.

Responding to a question, he said fast bowlers getting unfit is part of life and praised Pakistani ace bowlers Muhammad Amir and Hasan Ali.

“Coach Mickey Arthur is handling the team very well and producing good results,” he said.

However, he said that Domestic Cricket needs to be improved in order to get the best players at international level.—APP

Who is Muhammad Hussain that he talks about. Do we have a thread on him?

The irony goes through the roof when Wasim and Waqar talk about teaching players to avoid match-fixing. Well, I guess no better teacher than experience.

That fact that was the HEAD COACH when that entire 2010 fiasco happens makes me skeptical that does he indeed have the in-depth knowledge (that he claims to have) to handle such a situation. As far as I can remember Waqar in that entire scandal never once commented or gave a statement until everything was done and dusted with.
