Shahid Afridi speaking to India TV Channel on 3rd April

"The reason for tweeting, my dear, was to ask why innocent people are being lost, why are people dying for no reason"

"Pakistan and India are sensible countries and can sit down and solve the problems, its not that big an issue"

"First thing we should ask Kashmiris is which country they wish to go to; or maybe they don't want to go to any country and want to make their own country":

"Both countries need to fix themselves; if we (Pakistan) have something wrong in us, it should be corrected; Now, who is doing all this; Is it from Afghanistan? My point is that we are neighbouring countries and we should have good relations"

"As I have said before, we (cricketers) get a lot of respect in India and when India players come to Pakistan, they get a lot of love so we need to find a solution to this problem"

"Lets not get into Hafiz Saeed's issue as India also has people in it; You are media people, don't make issues out of things"

"I am talking to you now but really if I wanted to, I would have put the phone down"

"I don't support terrorists"

"I speak against all issues but today you saw me talk about Kashmir but you are ignoring other issues that I also talk about"

"I run a humanitarian foundation in Pakistan where I help in areas which have Hindus and Sikhs"

"Wherever there is oppression, all of Pakistan will be against it"

"I gave you so much time, that is your good luck, thank you"

Feel sorry for Afridi.

Damn...idiots on both sides of the border.

Oversimplifying an issue doesn't help anyone.

Afridi is not bad person from heart ,i always believed that. But thing is he doesnt know much of ground realities.

He had a choice between:
1. Indian money
2. Pakistan politics.
He seems to have lost his patience on #1 - so went with #2. Good way to get into politics.

The Punjabi nature of yours saying 'falana has good heart' is what makes us weak.

We need strong focussed people who don't melt.

Hearing Afridi, the phrase "generals without armies" comes to mind.

Both Indians and Pakistanis must also give them the right to complete freedom as well. This providing Kashmiris understand they'll be treated foreigners in both countries in such a scenario. What many Kashmiris really want is freedom yet be treated as locals in these neighbouring countries. They can't have it all their own way, never.

Despite the nature of Afridi's cricketing career I am starting to take him as a person a bit more seriously. The thing l can respect the most about Afridi's latest statements is the following part:

"First thing we should ask Kashmiris is which country they wish to go to; or maybe they don't want to go to any country and want to make their own country"

A sentiment which a lot of "patriotic" and prideful Pakistanis won't even humor. A perspective very rarely discussed in Pakistan. As much as I am against India's oppressive control of Kashmir region I am also against the blind chants of "Kashmir banega Pakistan" from the Pakistani side. I am against the entitlement mindset of Kashmir belonging to Pakistan.

The solidarity with Kashmiris should be on humanitarian basis and not because we expect some reward in return.

Being stubborn in its thinking, unwilling to self-reflect, the inability to hear criticism and accept mistakes, while protecting the fragile self-esteem at all costs by being over the top aggressive and prideful. These are the true weaknesses a person might posses. These are the rocky mountains blocking the road to progress. Heavy stones attached to the body, dragging it deep down the ocean.

If he's against oppression then maybe he should raise awareness for balochistan too? And before I get labelled an Indian let me tell you that I am Pakistani myself

Rape haappens acroass the globe which includes pakistan too. Its a disease which is all over the world. 125 crore population and you would hear more cases, not a rocket science .i dnt defend india at all. In india its the attitude and law and enforcement which needed to be blamed more .
Afridi let me tell you honestly if one day pakistan gives some importance to humanity which suffers there then that day we will learn as a example from you as well. Jinke ghr sheeshe ke hote hi woh dusro ke ghar pathar ni marte..First learn why no cricket and no one visits pakistan ,solve all problems and then lecture us.

so what this has to do with afridi ? is afridi prime minister or in charge of Pakistan's security ? afridi said his mind and lets deal with it instead of dragging some other issue.

Good interview by Afridi. However, the indian media will find ways to stirr up stories with these harmless comments as well.

Pakistanis have been fine with independent Kashmir. However, they probably just think it comprises AJK and Kashmir valley!

It also includes Gilgit Baltistan according to international law.

The referendum would go as follows (if two choices)

Gilgit Baltistan- Pakistan
Azad Kashmir- Pakistan
Jammu city- India
South Jammu districts- India
Ladakh- India
Kargil- Pakistan
Kashmir valley- Pakistan
Chenab valley- Pakistan

If there were three choices then the Kashmir valley might choose independence. Otherwise would remain same as above.

Kashmiri nationalists, basically JKLF, don’t have huge support outside a certain part of Srinagar. Kashmiri nationalists have also been used as a pawn to divide Kashmiris like Hashim Qureshi by RAW.

There simply isn’t enough support for an independent WHOLE pre 1947 state of J and K and people need to understand this!

Madplayer your thoughts?

Can't help but feel that most of these cricketers would be making less political statements if they had been included in the IPL franchises in recent years. As General Zia once said, cricket is the glue which binds the subcontinent.

It’s about time we stood up for kashmir. Long overdue!

Their frustration, as the rest of the cricketing world is participating in the IPL while they watch from the sidelines, is showing. PCB should have thought about it when they refused to issue NOC to Pak players for IPL 2.

Didn't think the accountants of cricketers would have a family reunion on this thread.

Thread is about Afridi and Kashmir. Stay on topic

That comment must have struck a nerve. IPL 2 was years ago, since then the block has been purely from the Indian side, even the owner of one IPL franchise complained about not being allowed to bid for Pakistan players.

Again, that is your league, totally up to India if they want to make it a smaller competition, but my point remains valid, I don't think players like Afridi would be making political statements about India if he had career investments there.

Don't think anyone disagreed with you on that one: throw in the right amount of dough and Afridi's faux concern for Kashmiris will disappear overnight as we have seen in the past. I was merely jogging your memory re. what led to Afridi not continuing to make the money off his IPL masters.

I wish Kashmir have their freedom but both countries won't allow this.

I love Pakistan. I love Kashmir and I love Afridi.

Not a hypocrite and never will be (Insha'Allah).

That said, I am starting to believe people (celebs, military, secret agencies and politicians) from BOTH sides use the Kashmir issue to divert general public's attention and gain monetary and political benefits.

For Indian public: The big bad boogeyman is Pakistan/ISI/The terrorist protectors etc etc.

For Pak public: Oh the Evil Hindus murdering innocent Kashmiris... etc etc.

Hat tip to this post.

Did Kashmir not have their own country before Pakistan attacked and occupied it forcefully in 1948?

For Indian public: Kashmir is an integral part of India and it will remain so. No part of India is up for secession. More so for Kashmir due to water (and electricity) resources and geo-strategic location (a sort of buffer between enemy states).
