I'm around halfway done, but these days I'm having a writer's block which is why I've decided to let it go for like a year, do some other stuff and go back to it refreshed. As a rough estimate, I've kept 2017-2018 as my aim, but I don't want to put too much pressure on myself. I'm just 23, and I don't see myself penning a dozen books. It is just an idea that popped into my head, somewhat inspired by H. G. Wells' The Country of the Blind and I just went along with it and soon developed into something bigger than I initially anticipated.
 
Good interview, Mamoon is a smart and perceptive member although sometimes he is OTT for the sake of it. The rubbishing of Irfan as a bowler is a case in point. I mean come on, it's a sad state of affairs when you have to read a non-Pakistani view to get a rational assessment.
 
No one rubbished Irfan, I was simply pointing out that he's not 75% as good as the hype he generates, and people overrate him out of desperation because you do need something to cling on.

Decent/okayish bowler, but not close to the match-winning strike bowler he's portrayed to be. Other than an ODI in South Africa, I haven't seen him rattle a top order which people expect him to do on Australian pitches. I think what we have seen in the NZ series over the course of the 2 matches is what you'll get, and this doesn't deserve the faith and hopes that people have in and from him.

The fact that he's the best among a useless lot doesn't change that he is not very good himself, and not among the top 10 pacers bowlers at the World Cup or at any given time. Sure you can use it to deflect criticism directed at him, but that doesn't change what he brings to the team, which is hardly much.

The end of your post is what I was talking about and contrasts nicely with the beginning. In any case, I don't want to dwell on it, I can understand why you feel the need to go the other way, far too many on here do overhype their cricket idols. But that is the nature of fans, you will find it in any sport.

I never said that, and he's playing for Pakistan at the moment on merit, but he is not good and is the most overrated Pakistani cricketer on the forum.

I don't see how that is equivalent to 'rubbishing' someone.
 
I had assumed Mamoon was some old guy - veteran of cricket watching/analysis. From the interview (started watching cricket in 1997 ish), it is possible he is younger than me even (~31).

Or he came to cricket late.
 
Read the full thing - seems M is 1991 vintage. Just a kid - preferring ODIs, seen only a little cricket. Puts it all in perspective.
 
By 'only a little' I am taking it from his interview that he watched the game from the late 90s onwards.

Mate, a lot of learning comes with age. You start to further appreciate the deeper nuances of the sport the older you get. I was in my late 20s before I fully grasped the importance of correct biomechanics for cricketers for instance.

At 23 yaar you should be less forceful and opinionated and more open to listening and learning from those who have seen much more than you. You are an enthusiastic poster - that's a plus but that must be tempered with experience.

Age doesn't teach wisdom, nor does it add more value to your judgment, but it can be used as a self-defense mechanism.

Gold. Also experience is not about living in the past, You need to learn with and move forward with the time, For instance someone from 20th century might be unable to adjust with 21st century cricket just by using his experience from that time.

Nice Interview Mamoon, I wish you joined PP few years earlier - that period was flooded with fantastic posters who would often provide excellent analysis of the game. Wish you well in your life.

Thanks. Actually I bumped into PP during the World T20 2009 first, but didn't feel like posting. Plenty of old timers have moved on though. Everyone has to one day, unfortunately.

A very good poster once you get past the stage of understanding that mamoon isn't actually trying to wind u up.
He is a glass half empty kind of guy and there is nothing wrong with that, most perfectionists normally are.

Thank you, obviously I don't like winding people up, but some lack the intelligence to appreciate difference of opinion and end up calling me Indian etc., which I don't mind, but it can get frustrating at times because it deflects attention from the matter in hand.

Pretty awesome narrative!! very intriguing I'd buy the book, would love to read your work if you ever choose to reveal a chapter or extract on PP. I love writing myself and still do here and there if am free (rarely) a work in progress though but given financial constraints have pursue'd a career in engineering due to the reasons you highlighted. Since finances were not an issue for you, why didn't you pursue a career in art or writing? was it because of family pressure or how the Pakistani society would look upon you because generally writers and artists are not held in high regard.
 
Rarely agree with some of the strange views you have but still a very good poster, always enjoy reading your posts. Keep it up.

I don't usually agree with much of what you say and often times find the way you come across as both cynical and a little too self satisfied but I guess I don't mind people to ho speak their mind that much being of a similar kind and can respect them for at least that. Good interview. Weren't people on pp suspecting that you are an Indian double agent who is pretending to be a Pakistani?

Not Glass half empty but a realist. Someone who likes to judge things based on facts and not let fiction or emotion get in the way. I greatly admire these qualities. Cant believe he is just 23.

Realists and pessimists are 2 different things bhai. The realist will say pak has little chance of winning world cup, because they don't have enough good players, however come the quarters which they should get to they are more than capable of beating anybody on their day.
A pessimist will say that we have no chance of winning the world cup and produce the list of why and u would think pak has never done anything against the odds before, forgetting the game is not an exact science.
The realist will also say that SA and Aus would rather play eng wi or sl in a knock out game rather than pak. The Pakistani pessimist will fail to see or understand this.

you are a realist
being a 120-130k pacer, he has virtually no chance of turning things around unless a miracle happens but you don't believe in miracles as such

apart from that your views are quite legit on pakistani players mostly

For me, pace is secondary while bowling intelligence and skill is primary. I think Ehsan can develop into a good bowler for Pakistan because he seems to have a good brain. I've seen quite a fair bit of him and judging him on these two games is inappropriate.

He has good height and if he can bowl in the corridor or uncertainty and seam the ball which he can, he will be quite difficult to handle with the new ball.

Regardless of your pace, discipline is key. If you are a spray gun, you will get whacked regardless of what pace you bowl at.

Sorry for the late reply, missed your post.

Bit of both actually. In Pakistan, it's very difficult to be self-sufficient as a professional artist, because the scope is so limited. Parental pressure is there as well, and my Dad always wanted me to do medicine. I have a knack for it though, I definitely enjoy it. Parental pressure is a consequence of social pressure though, if your son is a painter or a writer, he will be deemed useless. That's the sad reality.

Of course there is always room for improvement, no one person or any scenario is ever perfect. But is there anything wrong with accepting and being content with the way things are?

Say you go to upto one of your friends and start pointing out flaws in their personality, wouldnt they be very offended?
 
Of course I don't do that LOL. I don't have the right to judge people at an individual level, but if someone asks for my opinion and they get offended, that's their problem.

If not talking about solely stats, Sawed Anwar was a pleasure to watch. Also Gilchrist was a top batsman, Surely would be among top 10 overall batsmen for me.

Nice perspective on Gilly.

Gilly was a better test batsman in my opinion, and was one of the reasons Australia was nearly invincible in test matches for over a decade. Australia were a formidable side, and some times lost their top five wickets cheap. Normally the opposition would be thinking about winding up the innings at the fall of the fifth/sixth wicket and in comes Gilly to smash a run a ball fifty or hundred, leaving the opponent in tatters. It was very difficult to trigger an Australian collapse due to Gilchrist's presence at #7. In ODIs he was a big match player, but apart from that, he was no where near his stature in tests.

Both Gilchrist and Sehwag underachieved a lot in ODIs. Tremendous impact players, but never got anywhere close to their achievements in Test cricket.

Still won the 2007 world cup final single handely.
For me, won half the 2003 world cup final or at least a good part of it.
 
^ Amazing impact player, but he definitely underachieved.

I think if he would have played ODIs as a pure batsman, he'd have done better.

I don't always agree with his views but I admire his Passion on PakPassion.

And probably the first member interview that will cross the 4000 views mark :)

Younis Khan has also played more matches than Sohaib Maqsood and is a senior. Does that mean sohaib shouldn't get a chance in place of younis? :yk
