England batsman Michael Carberry has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour, his county Hampshire have confirmed.

The 35-year-old missed his side's County Championship match against Warwickshire after feeling unwell, and was sent for tests.

Further medical examinations will now been taken before he has treatment.

"I would like to send him and his family our very best wishes at this very difficult time," Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said.

It is not the first time Carberry has battled serious illness, having recovered from blood clots on one of his lungs in 2011.

Best wishes to Michael Carberry

The former England opener has just been diagnosed with cancer.

Let's hope that it is treatable.

Carbs has had absoloutely rotten luck with his health in recent years. Missed the majority of the season back in 2011 due to the development of large blood clots in his lungs, get well soon.

Sad news. Hopefully they've found it quickly and can remove it with no concerns.

Carberry is a nice bloke and quite respected from his time at the Scorchers

Terrible news. May he have a speedy recovery.

Poor guy. Can't believe there is still no cure for cancer. Hope he recovers soon as possible.

Michael Carberry set for training return with Hampshire after successful cancer surgery

Michael Carberry could be back in training with Hampshire soon, just six months after being diagnosed with cancer.

The former England opener was told he had a cancerous tumour in July but is making good progress from surgery as he prepares for a return to cricket.

Hampshire's director of cricket Giles White told the Southern Daily Echo: "Carbs is doing really well after a successful operation.

"He looked a lot better when I saw him before Christmas.

"He was looking to start practising again in the new year so hopefully he'll be in the nets soon. It's now about working back to full fitness.

"We'll support him in any way we can."

Thank God that he's returned to cricket. Cancer is such an abomination.

Some feel good news, am really happy for him! Can't wait to watch him bat, Carberry is a tough nut to crack!

Nice to hear, hope he can come back again and perform well.

Former England and Perth Scorchers opener Michael Carberry has returned to training with Hampshire as he continues his recovery from cancer.

Carberry, 36, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour last summer and has not played since the start of July.

But following a successful operation, he has made encouraging progress.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said: "Michael is doing really well, and it's great to see him back in the nets and striking the ball."

Carberry, who played the last of his six Tests three years ago in Sydney and also has seven limited-overs caps to his name, has been practising with the Hampshire first-team squad.

White added it is too early as yet, however, to be confident about when the left-hander may be back in the middle again for his county.

"Obviously it's still fairly early on in terms of working his way back to full fitness," he said.

"There's currently no timetable for a return to playing, but we'll see how he progresses over the coming weeks and be sure to continue to support him in whatever way we can."

A Statement From Michael Carberry

I would like to thank my family, the club, the supporters and my teammates worldwide for all the kind messages of support and love through another very tough time in my career and life.

There is still a long way to go to being ‘recovered’ fully, but the outpour of support from the cricket family has helped massively in getting me back playing, and I’m looking forward to another great summer with Hampshire.

In regards to the media, I would like to thank you for respecting my privacy in dealing with my illness and I would like to ask for this to continue on my return.

A century in his first first class innings back after his battle with cancer. His 2nd life threatening illness in the last 6 years at the age of just 36 and he appears to have got through it, with hope that's the last of them.

Michael Carberry scored a century in his first competitive outing for Hampshire since returning to cricket after undergoing treatment for cancer.

The left-handed opener, 36, who played six Tests for England, last appeared for his county in July 2016 before he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour.

He immediately started treatment and had a successful operation.

Carberry scored exactly 100 off 121 balls in Hampshire's game against Cardiff MCCU at the Ageas Bowl.

Having resumed pre-season training in January and going on a tour of Barbados with the county, Carberry released a statement on Tuesday thanking people for their support and urging the media to continue "respecting my privacy in dealing with my illness".

Hampshire begin their County Championship Division One season against Yorkshire at Headingley on Friday.
