Michael Holding has announced his retirement from cricket commentary after thirty illustrious years working on television for some of the leading cricket broadcasters including Sky Sports, Channel 9, and Supersport.

Holding has proved one of the most incisive and forthright voices on the sport and will be sorely missed.

Former West Indies cricket legend Michael Holding has announced his retirement as a cricket commentator. Holding has been one of the most influential and widely recognized voices in cricket but hinted to retire as a professional commentator quite a few times over the last year.

The 66-year-old, who was monikered ‘Whispering Death’ during his playing days for his lethal bowling exploits, has served for Sky Sports for over 20 years as a commentator broadcaster. However, with age catching up and the increasingly busy cricketing schedules, Holding has decided to bid goodbye to his second innings, with 2021 being his last year in the commentary box.

Holding, who represented West Indies in 60 Tests and 102 ODIs and has 391 international wickets under his name, stated that he feels himself to be extremely lucky when he looks back at his career, while he also opened up on the public opinion regarding his role as a commentator on a BBC podcast.

“In the Caribbean, I’ve been called biased before: ‘He doesn’t like Trinidad, he doesn’t like people from Antigua, he doesn’t like no one from Guyana’, Holding said. “After a while, although these people don’t like what I say, they respect what I am saying. So, I don’t worry much about that [public opinion].”

Holding was contemplating his retirement since April last year when he revealed about being unsure regarding his commentary future. “I am not too sure how much further than 2020 I will be going with commentary. I cannot see myself going much further down the road at my age. I am 66 years old now, I am not 36, 46 or 56,” he had said on a radio talk show.

“I told [ Sky] that I could not commit to more than a year at a time. If this year gets totally destroyed, I might have to think about 2021 because I can’t just walk away from Sky, a company that has done so much good for me,” he had stated.

Holding, who bid adieu to international cricket in 1987, garnered immense respect worldwide for his famous monologue on racism in sport and society at large in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.

I wonder if he is facing any health issues?

He is a very respectable personality but I think his commentary wasn't a delight for everyone.

I think it lacked passion, and was somewhat dry and boring. I know many may not agree but that's just my personal opinion.

Commentators like Bill Lawry and Ian Smith sound a lot more exciting to me.

I wish Mike all the best.
Not only an Icon of cricket but a scholar and a gentleman as well.

One of my favourite commentators, it’s sad that some people hate him because of his views on IPL and In general T20 cricket.

There's only so many times you can hark back to the 1980s.

I liked his commentary. Always like to hear the views from the 70s and 80s generation be it Mikey or Chapelli or even Geoffrey. Indians didn't like his no nonsense views but I personally found his honest views refreshing amidst hordes of commentators who can act like cheerleaders on air.

So SKYs golden generation of Botham, Gower and Holding gone. It will be interesting to see how long Bumble carries on.

Sad to hear One of the top commies over the last decade or two

He had a lovely voice and always was insightful, never afraid to tell you how he really felt One of the few from a previous generation who had personality in their commentary

man i am gonna miss listening to him.....one of the most attractive comm box voices. wry humor to boot. go well mr holding!

One of my favourite commentators, straight talking without being offensive. Generally pretty fair too.

Asked Mikey about this and his response in true Mikey Holding style was "I have done my last Test. Moving on boss. Nothing lasts forever Saj"

Lol @ Botham being part of the "golden generation". He was probably the dullest commentator I've ever listened to and I for one was happy when he was selected as the trade envoy for Britain. Means we get to hear less of him with the mic.

Seconded. Botham was a rotten commentator, came across as sour and biased. Gower and Holding on the other hand are different class.

Botham and Mark Waugh were the two commentators who have always come across as terribly biased to me. At least Waugh gives his insights and can be humorous sometimes with his mates, Botham however was just plain biased and boring.

Sad.

Would have loved his voice at the World T20.

"Carlos Braithwaite, REMEMBER THE NAME!!!"

Will he still run his YT channel?

Will he avoid commentating at home?

At only 66 years he could continue if his heart was in it. Look at how long Richie Benaud continued to commentate.

His views and opnions will be missed. He truely was a legend as a player and as a commentator.
Was an uncomprising stickler for quality, never dropped his standards. Hence never got on T20 bandwagon never praised substandard stuff.
A few years back he said if that is the future of Cricket than I am glad that I will be retiring soon (from Commentry).

Good commentator. Never gave in to please the audiences, held to his opinions firmly.

I used to think that he was biased against Indian cricket and its cricketers, but in the recent Ind-Eng series, he was quite impressed with the Indian players and openly praised them, also he was kind to Dinesh Karthik in the comm box.

He will be missed.

Good riddance. Great player but a hypocrite. Worst and the most boring commentator I have heard in my life. Every second line of his was like in my time cricket was like this and players played for their country 😂… the man himself left Windies cricket to play packers circus for 30000 quids
Don’t let the door shut behind you and go away.

Why you're questioning his health ? So anyone retiring gracefully has to have some issues ? In other countries people do retire before they are thrown away.

I found him a little too England-centric... We hardly got any insight from him when it came to the opposition players facing England.

Felt that he was too enamored with the English side and could go on singing their praises but when it came to opposition player...we'd hardly get a few words from him. Very similar to cranky old Botham in this regard

I have seen for myself where Health issues have played a major role in life changing decisions ie decision to retire abruptly, decision to move from a third world country to a welfare state first world country for good

Great fast bowler and a wonderful commentator , one of my favorite , I always enjoyed his comments . Graceful man , retired gracefully. Wish some Pakistanis do the same.

I remember the summers of 2010. Waking up early in the morning in Canada watching Pakistan bowl while listening to Micheal Holding commentating on our bowling. I used to make sure to watch till the lunch break.

Used to get my hands on some illegal stream as couldn't really afford to buy channel for cricket there, and in the dark room of the basement where there the sun wouldn't shine, I would have my PC monitor stream Asif, Amir and Gul running into bowl while Holding would heaps praises in his heavy Jamaican accent.

His accent was as such as if you wanted your life to be narrated by him. He is like the Morgan Freeman of cricket narration.

I never really paid attention to commentary in the past, but this guy made me love cricket commentary alot that I would enjoy watching the test series due to sky sports commentary team.

But when the guy was bought to tears because of Amir, it made me feel ashamed. People say that Amir did his time and owned no one nothing, but when I look back at this event I still believe Amir owes a try apology. To us fans for waking up just to watch him, to people like Holding who were bought to tears that day and to Ashley Giles who was just ashamed giving out that sponsored cheque which was held upside down as neither parties no longer cared at that point and wanted to get over with it.

It was a great pleasure to listening to the voice of this great man. To bad I had never seen him play, but he will surely be missed. I hope his commentary inspires more people from different regions to take up commentary and give us insights in the same manner that he used to.

So long Whispering Death. May you lead a healthy and a happy life

Exactly my thoughts on him, greatly worded. Not the most flashy and exciting, but knowledgeable and eloquent.

I have to politely disagree.

Kerry Packer was the father of West Indian cricket.

Before Packer, West Indies cricket was controlled by white men who had been members of the whites-only clubs in Bridgetown, Kingston and Port of Spain since the 1930’s.

Packer made cricket economically viable year-round for West Indian cricketers, who could finally hone their skills and fitness.

As for Michael Holding, I congratulate him on a wonderful life on cricket.

The likes of Tony Greig, Richie Benaud and Johnners were not really well-rounded enough men to enjoy a rich retirement with friends and family.

Mikey is a man who enjoys football, politics and long-standing friendships, and now is the time for him to enjoy a decade or two of freedom.

He is acutely aware that Malcolm Marshall and Sir Frank Worrell never got the chance.

One of the best commentators. I noticed him a little flat in the England-India series. Maybe his heart is not into it anymore or could be health reasons.

The best since Benaud.

Everything is top notch- the voice, the delivery, the insight, the passion, the willingness to take a stand. A reason to tune in.

Superb commentator. A wise elder and so very astute.

His contribution to BLM moved me to tears.

That was the greatest sports journalism segment that I have ever seen. I miss BBC live Test coverage, but Sky have done some truly exceptional work.

Such dignity and eloquence off the cuff like that. With the bass voice and the stature of the man - still so tall and upright with the flat belly, in his mid-sixties. So impressive.

Great Bowler but with a must shorter runup was equally lethal as Malcom Marshall. Was a delight to watch.

Commentary however did not seem to be his cup of tea. Very flat, unexciting commentary, often generating needless controversies. I don't think he picked up the right hobby. Sadly, he won't be missed. Hoping he is enjoying good health. Wishing him well.

One of greatest fast bowlers to grace the game, excellent commentator. Happy retirement.

I really liked listening to him and he was one of my favourites. His analysis was blunt and opinions were to the point. His commentary would surely be missed but, wish him best for his retirement and furious endeavours.

I'll take Holding being "dry" over all the silly banter we pass off for entertainment in today's cricketing world.

And to claim he had no passion means you clearly did not listen or watch enough of him. he was very passionate in 2010 and the terrible situation Amir found himself, he was teary eyed...and was similar when Amir finally made his return in 2016. Not to mention Holding's passionate monologues on racism, unequal cricketing structure, ineptitude of the ICC and the list goes on.

Holding was maybe the last remaining old boy, someone who knew the game and wasn't around to just pander to the sponsors or cricketing boards.

I have to say, it's sad theres a few negative opinions on here, and mainly from my countrymen. Just because he didn't toe the BCCI line...

I think Dear Mikey would disagree with you on Amir. He was emotional because a young kid, the best fast bowling talent of 09 and 10, had been tricked, cajoled, maybe threatened by older, darker forces. That's what his emotional breakdown had been about, him and Nasser in fact, and they have maintained the same stance in the years since.

Oh and it wasn't Ashley Giles who handed over the check, it was Giles Clark (I believe that's his name), the same man who would go on to work with serial fraudster Stanford, so hardly a beacon of honesty in the ECB.

But I do love the sentiment of your post, Holding's earnest commentating and honesty made one love cricket all the more.

It wouldn't surprise me if BCCI had a hand this.

Holding will missed in the comm. box that is for sure and even more so if we are subjugated to Manjrekar or Gavasakar in his place.

no because he was a hypocrite.

Still will miss his baritone commentary and analysis of fast bowling.

Can you explain why he was a hypocrite? And why it's mainly Indians who believe he was?

I'm pretty sure we don't own the entirety of morality.

coz of his views about T20s and IPL which contradict his actions during Kerry Packer and Stanford League.

He ditched WI cricket and commentated for England broadcaster yet gives lectures others.

Oh Sorry about that. Got the wrong Giles there :)).

I wonder who replsces him in the sky commentary team now.

I like his commentary but he became too much of a crybaby for my liking in the past year. So I am not sad that he is leaving.

He was banned from commentating on West Indies cricket because he criticized the previous WICB administration led by Dave Cameron, they even banned Tony Cozier from commentary. That is something which is a major positive in Holding's favour.

Holding used to commentate regularly in the Caribbean as long as Sky Sports held the tv rights for producing and distributing coverage for West Indies cricket between 2004 and 2009. Sky lost the contract around 2010, and the advent of the IPL forced the regular West Indies season to encroach more and more on the English summer, which meant that Holding was heard less often.

When Dave Cameron took over as the WICB president in 2013, he banned Cozier and Holding from commentary. It was one of Tony Cozier's greatest regrets that he wasn't allowed to formally say goodbye to viewers in the Caribbean.

Agreed. But for some reason I quite liked Botham's voice and his delivery. I have a soft spot for all the Sky commentators. Even Botham.

I find it hilarious that certain Indian posters can't seem to swallow his comments about the IPL. I guess they expect the IPL to be universally loved, just because they do.

At any rate, Holding was one of the last truly great commentators left in international cricket today. I've been listening to him for well over 16 years and he has always been the voice of cricket to me.

Hope he finds continued happiness in life. He will go down as one of the legends; not just on the field, but in the comm. box too.

Never sat on the fence, always said it how it was, whether people liked it or not.

Excellent commentator.

I think he wanted the England v India 5th Test to be his last commentary stint. Shame it didn't happen tbh. He deserved a better send off.

There were rumblings about Holding and Ian Bishop retiring some time back. Glad he stayed on long enough as he did, and I see Bishop retiring from commentary soon too.

All the best to Holding and may he enjoy his retirement.

Holding’s cricket innings done, but he’s a long way from over and out

To the generation who saw him first as a player, he was the Whispering Death who terrorised batters around the world. To those who did not see him play, he was a fearless and forthright commentator who called it as he saw it. And to the wider public who did not share his passion for cricket, he became a voice against racism.

Thankfully, Michael Holding is still with us, but he has confirmed to the Herald and The Age his days behind the microphone are over. At Holding’s request, there will be no formal announcement from Sky. He does not want the fanfare.

It brings to an end to nearly half a century involved at the top level of the sport. The abandoned Test at Old Trafford between England and India was expected to have been his last. It’s not unusual to see commentators broadcast into their 80s, so Holding, 67, leaves with plenty left in the tank.

It is a mark of Holding as a man that there is nary a person in cricket or the media, two fields that provoke strong opinions and are filled with big egos, with a bad word to say about him.

As a cricketer, Holding was a member of the feared West Indies pace attacks which dominated international cricket. His 249 wickets had him third on the Windies’ all-time Test list when he retired in 1987.

He began his distinguished commentary career the year after, his blunt and no-nonsense style a hit with cricket lovers all around the world.

Such was the frequency in which the Windies toured Australia in the 1980s and 1990s, he became a regular guest commentator on Nine.

Unfortunately, as the Windies waned his presence on Australian screens became limited to overseas Tests in England and South Africa, where he was a member of the Sky Sports and SuperSport teams.

Holding was not afraid to rock the boat of the game’s authorities. He did not call domestic Twenty20 games, describing that format as “rubbish” and “circus entertainment”.

During the 2019 World Cup, he labelled the umpiring “atrocious” in the world commentary feed, drawing a cautionary email from the International Cricket Council. His reply was to denounce the compromise modern commentators are forced to make by sporting bodies, which he likened to censorship.

But it’s his advocacy against racism, and the Black Lives Matter movement, where he has spoken loudest, his message heard well outside the boundaries of the cricket field.

Laying himself bare on the world stage, an emotional Holding detailed his lifelong experience of racism in a powerful monologue on Sky. The segment featuring Holding and former England cricketer Ebony Rainford-Brent, highlighting racial inequality, saw won a prestigious BAFTA award in sport.

He penned a book “Why We Kneel, How We Rise” to spread the message. Sydney AFL great Adam Goodes is a contributor.

Holding was also strident in his criticism of the Australia’s men’s team for not taking a knee during the tour of England last year, prompting coach Justin Langer to acknowledge his team had erred in not giving due discussion to the topic.

They took a knee in the Caribbean this year but Holding wants it to become the norm no matter who or where they play.

“Martin Luther King did not go on one march,” Holding told the Herald and The Age last October. “It is a gesture to show people you care about an issue. It is not a protest. You are signalling your involvement in an issue and that you support the issue that people are fighting for. Simple as that.

“You’re not creating any problems for anyone, you’re not disturbing anyone, you’re not interfering with the game, you’re showing everyone around the world that you’re supporting the cause.”

Holding has no plans for the future but a man with his stature and voice will not be idle. His two innings in cricket are done, but you sense he’s a long way from over and out.

One of the best commentators ever. Whenever I heard his voice during a game, it felt like a huge game.

Speaking in an interview:

“I am very disappointed in the people who are running [the game] and the people managing it, and I won’t miss it when I go"

“I’ll miss the friendships that I’ve made, I’ll miss the great people I work with, but I won’t miss the game, because this game is not the game that I started playing and the game that I knew. It’s different.”

Would be great for Holding to have a podcast...he would rip into so much of the nonsense around cricket today!

No one likes to hear the truth!

The current corrupt and malignant lot who are in charge of world cricket will only harm the great game in long term. It must be hard for people like Holding to see the great game heading downwards!

Lol your last sentence is hilarious. Commentating for your own country matches in patriotic thing.
Plus he did commentate. Summers he commentated England and then September onwards often West Indies
