"Mickey Arthur is a little strict with the players, but it is necessary at times": Shahryar Khan

LONDON: With Misbahul Haq having bid adieu to Test cricket and with it the captaincy of the Pakistan five-day team, the position at the helm is still vacant. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan, however, believes it is easily deducible who will hold the reigns of the longest format’s team in the years to come.

In an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune, Shaharyar hailed the captaincy of ODI and T20I captain Sarfraz Ahmed and gave a major hint towards his appointment as the Test captain when Pakistan host Sri Lanka in the UAE in October.

“Sarfraz is already the vice-captain [of the Test team]. Misbah has retired. Our next series is in October against Sri Lanka, and I’ll have to announce the new captain before that. So you can conclude yourself who we are going to choose,” said Shaharyar.

He then went on to praise Sarfraz for his captaincy as he led an unfancied Pakistan side to the 2017 Champions Trophy triumph while discussing the next leader of the Test pack. “I have already consulted a lot of people on this matter and I am planning to consult a few more but, truth be told, Sarfraz has delivered very well as the captain of the ODI and T20I side.”

Shaharyar then hailed Sarfraz’s mature approach and his game-changing decisions during the Champions Trophy.

“Sarfraz has matured a lot,” he said. “He made a lot of significant changes in bowling and batting during the Champions Trophy. I was a little worried when he sent Hafeez lower down the order during the final [against India], but Hafeez delivered with a quick-fire fifty. These are the kinds of judgments that make a good captain.”

On Champion Trophy victory

When Pakistan walked into the Champions Trophy as the eighth ranked team and lost to India in their opening encounter, almost everybody was certain Sarfraz’s men would be returning home soon, and Shaharyar admits he was one of them.

“I’ll be honest, I thought even qualifying for the semi-final would be a big achievement for us. I never thought we’d win the tournament,” he said, adding that he was hopeful nonetheless.

“The boys put in a lot of hard work,” Shaharyar continued while praising the team which beat South Africa, Sri Lanka and England before convincingly beating arch-rivals India in the final at The Oval. “They showed a lot of passion.”

The PCB chairman also praised head coach Mickey Arthur for the role he played in Pakistan’s success. “I would also like to mention the role of our head coach Mickey Arthur. The way he has trained the boys is exceptional,” he said. “He is a little strict too with the players, but it is necessary at times.”

He added that Arthur’s uncompromising attitude towards fitness and fielding helped yield this result. “He insisted that he can’t compromise on fitness and fielding. You saw how one player [Umar Akmal] was sent back due to fitness issues, despite him being such a good player.”

On Younus, Misbah’s future

The Pakistan Test team now finds itself with the unenviable task of finding replacements for retired veterans Misbah and Younus Khan, and Shaharyar thinks they are still not done with cricket and will be asked to assist the PCB in whatever capacity they deem fit.

“I had a chat with them,” said Shaharyar. “They said that they’ll need time to decide whether they can take the responsibilities that we give to them. We want them to help us, whether it be as mentor, as coach or as part of the board.”

Biggest regret

Shaharyar, who became the PCB chairman in 2014, is going to end his term in August and has already said that he will not be contesting for the post again.

And despite a generally successful tenure, he does have a few regrets. I wanted to organise Pakistan-India bilateral series,” he said.

Shaharyar revealed how close he had come to achieving that. “We had convinced their board to play with us. I met Shashank Manohar in 2015 and he told me that BCCI is not ready to play in the UAE but they agreed to play in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh,” he said. “We asked Sri Lanka for the venue and they agreed but Shashank had clarified that we can’t play without Indian government’s permission. He called me after two-three days and said the Indian government had said no. So, it wasn’t hard to convince the India board, but the approval from the Indian government is the real problem.”

Is the problem really the Indian govt or is it BCCI, it's easy for BCCI to hide behind government and say it's them.

Mickey's Arther's soti has resulted in a 50 over ICC Trophy for the first time since 92 ! no issues with his style !

Can shehreyar can not give a statement every other hour? He himself treats the team like a bunch of kids in the a school he is headmaster at. We need to bring corporate governance to PCB, not some retired babu and brown angraiz like mr khan.

Mickey may seem strict, but he's simply applying the professional standards of most other international teams when it comes to fitness.

Heck, even then he's said the standards are still more lenient than other teams. I feel Pakistan team needs the danda treatment and be kept on their toes.

Definitely, not sure what Shahryar Khan was on about with the "a little too strict" comment; what does he want Mickey to allow our players to lay undeh on the cricket pitch or something ?

Yeah he can be quite undiplomatic for a professional diplomat. Has had a loose tongue in this second tenure as Chairman.

However compared to some of the chairmen we've recently had, has he not been one of the better ones ? We've seen setting up of PSL which has helped us win an ICC Trophy by exposing youngsters to pressure situations. We've had organisation of Zimbabwe series at home, PSL final organised at home, appointment of Mickey Arthur and Azhar Mahmood as well as a new selection panel headed by Inzamam-ul-Haq that has introduced youngsters like Hasan Ali and Shadab Khan. He made a big mistake hiring Azhar Ali as ODI captain but he rightly has appointed Sarfraz for all formats now.

However the negatives for Shehryar is that he's not professionalised the PCB whose lavish and wasteful spending continues, appointments are still not made on merit (Shakeel Shaikh running domestic cricket being one example) and domestic cricket still suffers from lack of competitiveness, substandard balls and pitches. He has also not resolved the departmental vs regional issue either.

As long as the PCB Chairman is appointed by politicians and not through a proper recruitment and merit-based process where we search for the best public or private sector administrators, we are left with choosing between the lesser of various evils.

I bet Shahrayar khan wants Wahab Riaz, Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Akmal in the team..... beware PP'ers... don't fall in his trickeries

 X 1000

He has no knowledge of the game. I hope he isnt pressurising them to keep hafeez in the team and in the top order.

Does he think Mickey's strict because he sent back a player from the squad because he had failed the fitness test 7 times in a row?

Never liked Sheyar Khan, these PCB officials always look to fund themselves through series with likes of India which will bring huge mola. Last time I checked half dozen series against India after 2003 didn't help Pakistan domestic cricket one bit. Series with India will make PCB officials rich through corruption and that's all.

can someone let make this bawa just retire

As Markhor has pointed out he has done a good job in both his stints compared to the tools before him, issue is that age is getting to Shahryar these days but he is arguably one of our most competent PCB chairmans in our history

Bless, he does like the sound of his own voice.

But small mercies, I'll take that over Ijaz Butt

Makes you wonder what the heck dave whatmore did all that time?

Exactly, thats why winning CT should be treated as an aberration rather than the eventual turning of page, sustained success in sports follows great administration. Not the other way around. As long as we have a bunch of jokers running the show we should expect gratification in patches. I am seriously worried about the state of our board, and it will eventually effect our team. We should not compare this PCB admin with past PCB admins, that is setting the bar extremely low. We should compare them against other boards.

Unfortunately with Pakistani qaum - strictness is always necessary or otherwise there is total chaos..

Shahryar Khan is the best PCB Chairman we've ever had and anyone who refuses to accept that is delusional. The only tragedy is that he's been partnered by one of the most corrupt men in Pakistan, Najam Sethi. Him having do so well regardless of that just speaks of how great Shahryar Khan is.

I think we should buy Mickey a bigger danda, Eid present from PP posters Markhor

Seems like it, a little too strict for lobby favorites I believe... AS, WR and UA ofcourse.

I bet they are associated with the side since it gets them more sponsorship money as compared to others, which is why they consistently make it up there somehow

Words like these will be music to the ears of any chancers in the squad, they'll think the board will be sympathetic to their complaints against Mickey's forthright manner.

Don't understand, what wrong Azhar has done not to get the test captaincy. He is the best test player we have, he is experienced and above all he has proved he is mentally the toughest player in the team. He has performed where everyone failed, even Sarfaraz ( in New Zealand and Australia ) and then against India in CT, twice. Has better communication skill than Sarfraz. Sarfaraz is good as ODI captain but should not be burdened with test captaincy while we have a better option in Azhar.

He is easily the worst we ever had, he is only good in spending PCB's money on foreign tours with family .

Team is just started to get rid of Misbah's defensive and negative approach and have started winning and SYK wants Misbah back in some other capacity. Any sort of influence on the team by Misbah is a bad news.

The best example of Misbah's awful influence on the ODI side was when Misbah fans claimed that after his departure Pakistan will struggle to even cross 200, but the reality is Pakistan has the third highest number of 300+ totals since 2015 WC.

All hail savior.

:salute

Azhar resigned from the Vice Captaincy himself. He has no clear desire for captaincy anymore.

The title is wrong.

Shaharyar Khan said Mickey is "a little strict, too" not "a little too strict".

Was a bit confused about the wording as there is no comma in the sentence - I've removed the word too because if it comes after strict, then it's in context of the previous sentence so not needed in the title.

Anyway, don't think he's said much wrong in this interview, to be honest. Better than the usual.

Thanks!

Shaharyar Khan is still the best PCB chairman ever, even in his geriatric disinhibited condition.

It's pretty normal for the brain of a guy well into his eighties to suffer loss of the pre-frontal tissue which maintains your inhibitions.

Even in the decline of old age he is still honest and trustworthy.

Shahryar Khan and Najam Sethi have done a wonderful job for Pakistan Cricket. Credit must be given where it is due. They should issue media statements everyday and keep us posted on whatever is going on in the team.

Media statements everyday will result in more SK verbal garbage and Sethi jumping the gun on accusing players on fixing.

He is easily the worst we ever had, he is only good in spending PCB's money on foreign tours with family .

Have you forgotten Ijaz "where is the proof" Butt ? He did untold damage to Pak cricket.

For once I would like PCB and senior Pak players to stop talking about their desire for an India-Pak series inspite of being regularly insulted by their Indian counterparts and the Indian govt. How much more insult is enough for you guys before you understand that enough is enough?Have some respect for your country before you go begging again. Is there anyone In Pak who has some power and self-respect who can makes these idiots understand?

It's good that he is strict.

If only you were as professional Mr. Chairman.

Mickey Arthur is exactly what Pakistan cricket needed - someone who wouldn't just tow the party line, someone who will stand up to the players and someone who isn't afraid to tell the players and PCB how it is.

Although I admire the talent of Umar Akmal, but I really liked how Mickey dealt with Umar. The guy really needs to sort out his attitude. We have replacements Umar!
