What's new

Mickey Arthur, Sir, please watch the Net Run Rate (NRR)!

I’m just glad with the clean sheet. I hope we do not need the help of NRR. Let’s just focus on winning.

Pakistan indeed took a major hit in NRR today. They’re in negatives now. Jeez

Pakistan NRR in negative now and they have already played Netherlands and their WC bunnies, Sri Lanka. Now they face SENA, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, and have to turn around the NRR apart from winning 4 of those games.

India could and should have won in 25 overs today, so some recovery at the end from NRR point of view for Babar.

So, only two winless teams in the World Cup now.

Aussies improving their NRR big time but they still need some healthy wins

The mood wil change on this forum and Pakistan fans in general if Pakistan beat Australia tomorrow.

although unlikely, pak has all the firepower to beat somewhat washed-out Australia. There are no superstars in peak form in Aus, but they will still be a formidable opponent as an unit.

It’s all about peaking at the right time and Pakistan usually starts peaking in the second half a World Cup historically speaking.

what annoyed me was that in the Aussie match, after we were 7 down, we should have looked to play out the overs to preserve the NRR. Instead, our tail went down slogging without thinking

They’re called tail for a reason 🤣

Unless there are major upsets Pak will come back to top 4 tomorrow and mostly will go back to 5 on Wednesday. By next Sunday we will have a very clear picture of where everyone stands. Pak has a match against SA and Australia vs NZ.

Net run rate will not even matter if Pakistan fails to win the next 4 matches, which looks like is never happening. They might lose to SA and NZ.

Now all I want is rest of 4 teams give proper thrashing to babar and his friends that all I request from them. They wanted percentage of wc image rights increase in salary and more nocs to play leagues

Australia likely will end with 12 assuming they lose to NZ and beat England BD and Afghans

Pakistan even with 4 out of 4 can’t surpass 12 points .

So only hope is Australia loose to England or Afghans . If they lose to both that would mean Pakistan need 3 out of 4

Eng winning all their matches and NZ beating Aus has probability than Pakistan sneaking through

So if a goat turns into a lion and starts to fly and we find 5 or 6 world class cricketers we qualify. Got it. Oh and we need to win 4 matches. Seems likely.

Read or heard somewhere that any team finishing below 8th position will lose automatic qualification for the next WC and will have to play qualifiers.. Can anybody confirm this? If so England will have to go through the qualifiers!

That’s bad news for teams hoping to qualify for top 4 and are yet to play England

I might be wrong, but I think anyone finishing below 8th doesn't qualify for the Champions Trophy, although it might apply to the next WC too.

I think it is related to the next Champions trophy. Teams that finish in the top 8 at the end of the World Cup league stages will automatically qualify for the upcoming Champions trophy in Pakistan (the rest will play a qualifier to enter the main pool, I believe). Regarding the next World Cup, it will be a 14-team event like the one we had in 2011 and 2015.

Netherlands secured a convincing victory over Bangladesh, propelling their tally to 4 points in the tournament.

Slipping away for Pakistan

Actually Afg win today is better for us. Afg still hve to play Australia and SAF so they are unlikely to get more than 8 points.

SL loss today has effectively eliminated them but we still need a favor from them by beating NZ..

If Pak beats Bang and SAF beats NZ - it is then down to Pak and NZ for the 4th spot :)

The situation that Pakistan are in, forget the NRR and focus on winning first.

Must win 2 in a row and then wait for the command for game 3

SL loses tamely against Afghanistan but you expect SL to beat NZ. What optimism.:D

All going well for the NRR today.

Hopefully they can wrap this match up quickly.

Our victory today was equivalent to around 100 runs victory defending a total so NRR got some boost.
There is a still a difference of around 360 runs between New Zealand and Pakistan.
Pakistan wants South Africa to win tomorrow but they would also love seeing South Africa posing around 400 batting first and New Zealand collapsing. A close victory for South Africa will keep Pakistan alive but not do any wonders to NRR.
Most important match for NRR is Pakistan Vs New Zealand. If Pakistan wins then the impact of this game on NRR would be double. For example Pakistan wins by 100 runs then overall difference would reduce by 200 runs as Pakistan will gain by 100 and New Zealand will lose by 100.
The main idea of sharing this was to provide some mathematical calculations not that I am sure that NRR would come into play. Please do not use this post later to mock as it is only focused on hypothetical situations and keeping the interest of upcoming group games in the World Cup.

Can you post what would need to happen for us to hypothetically get ahead of saf in run rate. Imagining if they lose their last 3 games and we win our last 2.

Secondly what would need to happen to get ahead of aus or nz if they win one but lose 2.

In Bangalore , there is no way Pakistan can win against NZ , if NZ play to there potential.

Sure let me share that. South Africa has already played us so there would not be a double impact of NRR on any game. Their net run rate is +2 so overall they are 600 runs above us. There would be back to back poor performances from them to get that much margins.
Another thing is Afghanistan will have 10 points as well in that assumption provided they beat Netherlands but their net run rate is -0.7 ( around 200 runs behind us and 800 runs behind South Africa).

There are two kinds of pitches in Bengaluru. I think you remember the Pak vs Aus match which was really high scoring.
The second game was England Vs Sri Lanka where England collapsed and the pitch was on the slower side.

On current form, New Zealand are favorites to win the game against us and 50-50 against South Africa. That is why everything is hypothetical.

I fear NZ gonna break all hopes of fans tomorrow by winning the match , putting all the Run rate calculations to rest..they are such a ruthless disciplined side who gets the job done. Pakistan should not have lost to a team like Afghanistan, and worse get the short end of the stick against SA by umpires call.

Let's hope it is not a close game. A NRR dent to any team will create some interest.

Three consecutive wins have earned Afghanistan 8 points, giving them a bright chance to qualify for the semi-finals.

Wow who are the Afghans yet to play.

Australia and South Africa

Ouch

Unfortunately I think this is it for Afghans. They can go home proud with 4 wins. Exceptional World Cup for them.

They cant compete with Australia but if they bat first and put up a healthy total against SA, SA will choke like they always do.

ICC bcci are capable of anything if they can arrange a reserve day for Ind/Pak game theyl change nrr rule anything to get a Ind v Pak semi .
