Minorities being hated for sports loss, Mohammad Shami the latest victim

We have a significant populace among the Sri Lankan muslims who support Pakistan as well. It has a lot to do with the 80-90s era. Many a people named their kids after Pakistani cricketers. True about the Tamil community as well.

I know brother, I'm well aware of the inter ethnic relations between different communities in Sri Lanka. Although I've seen many Sri Lankan moors and Tamils supporting Sri Lanka too.

Well actually I know that liberalism is probably the most ideology in both India and Pakistan. But I think both countries would be far better if they were actually liberal in nature.

Right wing politics and conservatism bases its support on majoritarianism, which inevitably leads to 'othering' of the minorities leading to polarisation which results in a self perpetuating cycle of hatred and polarisation. This has only two end results - if the minority is strong enough in numbers, it would lead to a situation short of outright civil war like the one you have in Lebanon due to polarisation between the Shiites and Maronites. If the minority is not significant enough in numbers or power, it would lead to majoritarian utopia in theory but in practice, more chaos would ensue as right wing politics derives its support based on hating someone and even if the population is 98% majority, fissures would develop within the majority as it happens in Pakistan where most of the trouble they face is because some people in their country think others are not muslim enough or the state is not islamic enough. India is right now in the middle, but continued right wing politics would result in either of these two results, both of which would only end in chaos.

There is a tendency in the subcontinent to view liberals as simplistic idiots who are totally devoid of reality and naive to believe in fairy tales of utopia. Actually I'm someone who looks at every thing from en economic pov and a lot of people fail to realise how far right politics can cause social disenfranchisement, leading to social unrest and invariably affecting not just the productivity of the country, but the national integrity as well. That is how Pakistan got partitioned once again in '71 when a more liberal government would actually have had Bangladesh still existing as East Pakistan. There's a reason why the most liberal countries happen to be in the west and coincidentally they're the most egalitarian and progressive societies. It's not a question of money alone, Many Arab countries and European countries are rich economies - but there's a reason why most people (including muslims) would choose the latter if both set of countries offer citizenship and that's because they're liberal societies and less likely to discriminate you based on what you believe.

LOL what are you going on and on about right wing, liberalism etc? This is my problem with left liberals, they always twist points to deviate from real topic. First of all lets get one thing clear, irrespective of our political viewpoint we all love India (atleast I hope so). Our national cricket team represent all Indians in the ground, sometimes they win and sometimes dont.

But when you celebrate Indian defeat living in India by bursting firecrackers people will criticize. There are videos circulating all over twitter where students in Amritsar university celebrating Pakistan victory. Congress MLA tweeting and mocking Indian defeat as defeat of BJP bhakts. Let me know if you want me to share all those tweets.

There's absolutely mo evidence to back this statement other than your anecdotal experience. I'm aware that there are some Indian muslims who support the Pakistani cricket team, but they're a minority.

Besides, I'm pretty sure there must be quite a few Pakistani hindus and Bangladeshi hindus who support the Indian cricket team. They just might not be bold enough to burn fire crackers openly. In fact, I personally know quite a few Sri Lankan Tamils who openly support the Indian cricket team over the Sri Lankan team.

For me it's very simple, it's not something amounting to treason as long as they don't engage in anti social activities. I know quite a few Indian hindus who support the Australian cricket team and the South African cricket team, are they treasonous too or their religion provides them immunity?

Secondly, you look at all the examples I quoted above, be it the Indian muslims, Pakistani and Bangladeshi hindus or Sri Lankan Tamils. All of them have been demonised and oppressed in their respective countries due to majoritarian bigotry. The question should not be why they support the arch rival. Rather it should be why they feel disenfranchised enough for them to not relate as Indians or Pakistanis or Sri Lankans. And the answer lies in how they're being treated in their respective countries. If anything, I would award anyone who belongs to a minority community and supports his team in the subcontinent for their loyalty despite the terrible manner they're treated in their respective countries.

Tbf Pakistani Hindus don’t support india from my experience

All these are political reactions, you need to stop taking that seriously. Nobody really wants India as a country to crash and burn when they make fun of Indian defeats. They are just doing it for political reasons. Let's get one thing straight, the Indian cricket team losing a cricket match has nothing to do with nationalism. I'm assuming the Amritsar university was done by Sikh students, is it?

Why not? Those 11 guys were playing international cricket representing Indian National team. It was not IPL or club cricket. So when you openly celebrate Indian national team defeat living in India, do sloganeering in an Indian campus and when people criticize it you say its their freedom of choice, well its not. There is no left or right wing here, its just black and white.

Political reactions? LOL Why would congress choose Indian national cricket team defeat as a political weapon against BJP? I thought politics is India's internal matter.

... and we should believe you over me because I am very ignorant and unaware and you used the words "very well noted"?
:) WOW!

You said pakistani muslims never targets other pakistanis over religion which is false and untrue. There stories of forced conversion marriages all the time...

That was a ignorant statement to make. Religious persection happens all the time whether its BNG, IND, or PAK.

I don't know. Maybe we have different versions of patriotism. For me, someone who's not patriotic is someone who intentionally indulges in anti social activities aimed at disrupting the peace and the harmony of the country. Our people conflate sports tribalism with nationalism when they're two different things. The BCCI is not even a government body, it's a private one. There are many Australian and English cricket fans on twitter I know, who are all hindus living in India and celebrate Indian defeats against the team they support. That hardly bothers me, that's just sports tribalism.

Desis often conflate sports with nationalism when it's not. Invariably, most of the people who do this tend to be overseas patriots. Who am I to question the patriotism of someone who works in the country and pays taxes in my country. Please don't take this in a bad way, but let's take your case as an example. You don't live in India, you ditched the country for foreign pastures. I'm not sure if you still hold the Indian passport or if you've traded it for the UK one. You work and pay taxes in the UK, don't get me wrong, all of which you're perfectly entitled to do as it's your will. I just don't get why you can do all this and remain patriotic but question the patriotism of people living in India based on the cricket teams they support.

Good stuff from Sachin but knowing our jaahil log it won't make any difference. While sachin is at it, he should congratulate Pakistan and then see the magic. :inti

All those who posted hateful comments against Shami should be called out and shamed. Every sensible Indian should show their support for Shami. BCCI and Virat and everyone should take the initiative. Curb this weed in the bud stage before it affects Shami's mind and performance. Poor guy, he had one bad day, and it was not like he alone had a poor day. If anything, Bhuvi had a worse day.

That's unfortunate, if you don't mind, can you expand on how and where this happened..Did the attack happened unprovoked or did it happen after some sort of celebration?

Not that I support it, but if I happened to be in Kashmir, I wouldn't celebrate an Indian victory against Pakistan openly not because I don't have the right, but because I don't want to rile up those who have lost and end up putting myself in danger. Emotions run high after these games and a lot of people take these matches way too seriously than it should be. If it was an unprovoked attack, then absolutely no excuses for the bigotry.

Virat Kohli can congratulate Pak team....but we are not allowed...

Tendulkar has done the right thing and it's commendable but I would have liked to have seen him more blunt. Tendulkar can help to change the mind-set of Ind if he so wished.

Everyone knows what happened to Danish Kaneria

Lol nothing happened.

At the very most some people had an issue (and they said it amongst themselves not directly to him) with him using same utenslils as him. That’s wrong but I think can be put down to uneducated people.

It is very different from him being accused of being an Indian agent and purposely bowling poorly like is happening with Shami

Tendulkar is saying what every sane Indian thinks. Anyone trolling Shami for his religion are lowest creatures and knows nothing about cricket. Pls dont generalize Indians for some pathetic online trolls. Does all Brits think alike when few trolls targeted Boko Saka & Rashford after Euro loss?

We all stand in solidarity with Mohammed Shami.

You should be the last one preaching others about this. You yourself start calling Indians as Pakistanis when your views don't align with them. Obviously you being an andhbhakht has something to do with this? :inti

What I said is true. There are videos of numerous (so called) Indians in various parts of India who were celebrating Indian defeat yesterday. Sehwag and Gambhir said the same in tweet. Those traitors should be condemned. If you celebrate Pakistan victory sitting in India, ofcourse I will call them out.

But two wrongs don't make it right. Those who are targeting Shami are equally poor.

I'm assuming the Amritsar university was done by Sikh students, is it?
No chance of that. Sure it was Kashmiri students.

And based on my experiences in school and college with Kashmiris, sorry to say, I don't have much sympathy for some of them who want the best of both worlds. On the other hand, there are hardworking Kashmiris who run shops in tourist spots and who in spirit want independence, but have the decency to not go around insulting Indians just to show they don't care about India. The latter, I've seen, get a certain amount of sympathy and support from Indians especially in cosmopolitan cities.

I knew this Kashmiri girl from college days who now runs a school in Jammu. She used to regularly raise funds in Bengaluru but openly always supported the Pakistan cricket team. For a while it was fun, because we both were fans of Afridi. But after while, it stopped making any kind of sense.

Don’t be an idiot. Read what I said again, I am sticking to cricket, let’s not get into the weeds here.

And it’s true there were never such incidents with Yousaf and Kaneria. They both had good runs in the team without such crap happening.

This is not a problem unique to India by any means. Many of the great so called liberal, developed, free and democratic western nations also suffer from this. You only have to look at the abuse that a few England footballers got after the Euros last summer.

I'm not sure what would happen to a Pakistani Hindu who has a bad day in the office against India and we lose the game but I do know that minorities don't exactly have the gold standard in Pakistan.

There are idiots everywhere. Shami will do well to ignore them, or laugh at their bigotry because he is more of a man than any of them will ever be.

There were never such incidents because social media was non existent then.

Most Kashmiri muslims have never really felt Indian, so it's natural they grow up supporting Pakistan. Politically there are different views among them (whether to be independent or join Pakistan), but when it comes to cricket, 99% of them would support the Pakistani cricket team. I don't see it as a problem as long as they don't try to rub it in the faces of their Indian colleagues in Indian universities outside Kashmir, at which point it would invariably get physical. That's just common sense.

If 99% are supporting PK,why is it that I always meet the 1% that support Ind. I have yet to meet any Ind Muslim support PK over Ind, it is def true that 99% Kashmiri Muslims support PK

Same here in the US. In 20 years here, I have yet to meet one Indian muslim who supports Pakistan. On the contrary, they go out of their to wear their "Indianess" on their sleeve.

I am sorry to say but in cricket, we do not have any minority bias concept.

In India, it is pretty normal for cricketers to receive such level of flak, no matter how big a cricketer is. It is unnecessary logic of linking it with religion in case of Mohammad Shami. A lot of cricketers which includes the legendary MS Dhoni also received several abuses and death threats last year when CSK were playing poor cricket.

Virat Kohli himself receives a lot of hate and in 2015, when he got a 1(8) vs Australia, he was abused and his girlfriend was linked as a reason for his failures.

All these are usual stuffs and the cons of being a cricketer in India, just like there are several pros too.

lol. Have you read the abuse? Kohli or Dhoni never get abused with their religion being mentioned.

No surprise, India is not an extremist Hindutva nation, this is just the start for Muslim celebs. The Muslims in India have been discriminated and violence towards them has been around for years now.

Ok , if you say so.
You can guess what will happen when one would be bursting crackers in pindi when india win.

Bursting crackers is actually quite a provocative act, as if your celebrating that a country loses.

Problem exists everywhere, india is no exception.
I support Shami.

All this bru ha ha is a dime a dozen.

Kashmiris ( both muslims & pandits have values of kashmiriyat ) are very cultured and intelligent , and your views of your limited cross section means nothing.
Everyone knows what happened with innocent pharmacist late mr vindroo.

In the UK there was angry reaction that the from the PM to the man on the street, everyone was disgusted. And the analysis showed that the number abusers from the UK was actually quite small. Will the Ind govt prosecute the abusers?

Some comments going on that Sehwag is an anti-muslim and a racist.

Let me ask the thoughts of my little brother, @Bhaag_Viru_Bhaag?

:inti

Uk is not bapauti of fair

It has problems and there is no hiding from that, but i dont see the same reaction from you guys in Ind. And you are avoiding the elephant in the room- the ideology of the leader and his minions creates the atmosphere to justify this abuse

For cricketers and popular celebs, these things can happen and I am completely against it as it is absurd and ridiculous. However, I don't buy the idea that it happens only with Shami because of his religion.

Moreover, we must not forget that the Hindi Cinema was dominated over last three decades by the Khans who often were able to produce blockbuster movies even with average content, something which others like Akshay Kumar or Hritik Roshan weren't able to. The minority part is over-exaggerated in India compared to other countries.

Basically, there are enough over-tempered and toxic trolls in the country who does this stuff on social media but they do it to everyone. At the same time, a lot of Indian fans highly respect cricketers like Zaheer Khan, Mohammad Shami and Irfan Pathan. Irfan Pathan even had huge fan following during his peak and Zaheer was loved by everyone for his bowling at its prime.

One common theme you are forgetting.

Zaheer and Shami or any other Muslim cricketers are Indian as long as they are performing, they become Muslims if they do not perform.

Khan is an Indian but as soon as he were to highlight BJP/RSS bigotry he will be only known as a Muslim.

A common theme among the racist and bigots all over the world and not just in India.

Has it happened to Hindu cricketers? Has their faith been used as criticism?

We don't live a few decades ago. Not sure if you keep with Indian politics and social changes but this country is now a hotbed of Hindutva ideology, which is very much against minorities but esp Muslims.

Shami who is proper Indian is being attacked for his faith where as black English footballers were for their race. If anyone is to blame then it was Kohli who should have bowled Bumrah his best bowler at the time. Bumrah would have tested the Pak batting much more instead Shami gives away six in the first delivery.

Words fail me.

Social media at its worst.

Racism comes in many guises and it's about time social media companies did more about this sort of disgraceful behaviour.

Can't understand why even stupid Pak fans are associating Pak's win as Muslim's defeating Hindu's. These fools are spitting on the face of Pak minorities indirectly calling them "traitors" too.

Oh Bhai the issue is this:

Kohli etc may get lot of abuse but the abuse isn’t because he is say Punjabi. That is not a factor

With shami here his religion is being cited

This isn’t cricket or performance related at all. It is a symptom of a much larger issue. Politics that are based on intolerance and rapidly increasing bigotry within that society.

Not true. Pakistan had two very prominent players Yousaf Youhana and Kaneria and a lot was expected from them because they were marquee players but they let us down on a number of occasions and faced a lot of criticism but never ever once that I remember they were targeted due to their religion.

Kaneria himself has come forward and said he was routinely abused for being hindu and his loyalty to pakistan always would be questioned. Lucky for Youhana that he reverted or I doubt he would stay captain for as long as he did.

In a billion plus population, there has to be some idiots to tweet like this , don't think we can generalized this for all Indians. I'm sure similar people re found in each country and Pakistan is no exception .

Kaneria himself has come forward and said he was routinely abused for being hindu and his loyalty to pakistan always would be questioned. Lucky for Youhana that he reverted or I doubt he would stay captain for as long as he did.

This is totally untrue.

Kaneria never said this . Please stop lying

The fact is, between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, every country thinks each one is tolerant than the other when the reality is all of these societies are third world hell holes for minorities. Pakistanis and Bangladeshis often think they're more tolerant than the other whereas there's as much bigotry in their countries as there's in India. If Amit Shah makes the termite comment on Bangladeshis, Sheikh Rasheed has made similar if not more derogatory comments against hindus, who actually live in his country too. Similarly the anti hindu sentiment in Bangladeshi society is nearly the same as the anti muslim sentiment in India. Bangla muslim mobs routinely go on rampage and desecrate hindu temples and burn down hindu houses in Bangladesh, the recent anti hindu riots based on a fake rumour created by a muslim is just an example.

Coming to India, Indians often tend to say when asked about Pakistan or Bangladesh, "Oh they are hell holes for minorities and hindus and christians routinely get tormented there" but don't acknowledge the heavy anti muslim sentiment in the Indian society or acknowledge the lynching of muslims by hindutva mobs. In India and Bangladesh, there's a similar strain of hatred - anti Pakistan sentiment translates into anti muslim sentiment directed against the poor muslims in their own country in India, while in Bangladesh anti Indian sentiment translates into anti hindu sentiment directed against the poor hindus in their own country.

The thing is, these people tend to stay in a bubble and think their country is more tolerant when the reality can only be gauged by the view of outsiders. There's a reason these regions are third world hell holes while east asia has rapidly developed without a fraction of these third world issues - they don't have the opium addiction of religion and actually actively worked towards progressing their societies to the level of the west. Whereas these countries in south asia are addicted on religion like drug addicts and these societies show the same problems that a body of a drug addict would show.

Kohli also celebrated Pak victory with a big smile and personally extended a special congrats to Barber, and even hugged Rizwan.

So Kohli should be called out n be asked move to Pakistan?
Or, if Kohli can celebrate n congratulate Pak win n hug players, then any Indian should also be allowed to so if he wishes? Make up your mind.

The silence from his team mates says a 100 words

Its deafening

India's 10-wicket defeat to Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2021 still remains a topic of discussion, but mostly for non-cricketing reasons. While reports of crackers being burst in different parts of the country emerged after India's loss, senior pacer Mohammed Shami was also subjected to hate and abuse on social media.

As reactions continue to come in from former cricketers over the incidents that have taken place in the aftermath of India's defeat. Gautam Gambhir, who isn't known to mince his words, has reacted strongly to both incidents.

Speaking on the subject of firecrackers being burst in different parts of India after Pakistan's win, Gambhir said that such people can't call themselves Indians. “Those bursting crackers on Pak winning can’t be Indian! We stand by our boys! #shameful”, Gambhir tweeted.

Speaking to India Today, Gambhir further expressed his anger on those bursting crackers, calling the act shameful and unacceptable.

“It's shameful. You live in a country and are called an Indian but when another country wins or Pakistan wins, you start bursting crackers. This is absolutely unacceptable. People who have burst those crackers, cannot call themselves Indians,” said Gambhir.

Reflecting on the abuse that skipper Virat Kohli and pacer Mohammed Shami has been receiving on social media, Gambhir said that it's disgusting to target certain individuals in a team sport.

“It is absolutely disgusting when you target an individual, whether he is the captain or someone who is from another community. Ultimately, it is a team, it is a nation. Players like Kohli and Shami have done fabulous things for the country, have won so many games for us, have made the country proud.

“Targeting certain individuals in a team sport is not acceptable. In a nation like India, you win together, you lose together and that is what I want to say to every Indian. Support your players, they will definitely turn it around,” he asserted.

Gambhir isn't the first cricketing celebrity to react to these incidents. Even other former cricketers like Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh have taken to social media to condemn the hate and abuse that Shami has been subjected to.

Once again someone who lives in England and support Indian team against England should be the last one to call others traitors. Bhaijaan kabhi mirror bhi dekh liya karo. :kp :inti

Kaneria himself has come forward and said he was routinely abused for being hindu and his loyalty to pakistan always would be questioned. Lucky for Youhana that he reverted or I doubt he would stay captain for as long as he did.

Kindly share the video/article where Kaneria said that. Thanks in advance. :inti

In India and Bangladesh, there's a similar strain of hatred - anti Pakistan sentiment translates into anti muslim sentiment directed against the poor muslims in their own country in India, while in Bangladesh anti Indian sentiment translates into anti hindu sentiment directed against the poor hindus in their own country.

.

Pakistan and Bangladesh hardly have any minorities left. And we all know how they are treated out there.
India has a substantial muslim population, and also scores of other minorities like sikhs, buddhists, jains etc, who for the most part are getting along ok. One has to bear in mind that India was partitioned on religious lines. So some animosity against muslims may exist in some circles. But anyone who says that India has become dangerous for muslims is spouting ISI propaganda! Sorry but this is true.

Aren't hindus lynched in India? Haven't sikhs and christians faced violence? Every community in India has had to face discrimination and worse. It is something to be expected (not justified) in a third world country rife with corruption and lack of opportunities.

As for Shami, Siraj and the other muslims in the Indian team, the overwhelming majority of India's population treats them as one of our own. Since when did some idiots on social media start representing the opinion of the majority?

I think you are one of the more astute posters here Streety. Sad that you are talking like some of the so-called 'lefitst Indian intellectuals' here.

Indian fans have been disappointing recently. From sbusing Varun to Jamieson to others.

Kohli copped the most abuses.

But there is no religious angle to this.

Coming to muslims supporting pakistan.

While the majority does support India, a section of them does support pakistan.

Lets be honest here, you have AMU in India, that runs on taxpayers money but insists on honouring Jinnah. How many hindus died in the Direct action day riots? How can M A Jinnah be honoured in India?

This is just an example how a section of Muslims have love for pakistan. Almost all of them will be found in UP Bihar or Bengal or their migrant population.

It's quite evident that Gambhir & Sewag are anti Muslim and pure racists. The best part of the match was Mohammed Rizwan praying during Innings break, slap in the face for racists like sewag and Gambhir.

Brother Rizwan is my favorite player now :moyo

When you mock someones religion and say to them go back to pakistan then there is a religious angle to this

Hes not just getting abuse Its religious based

If you think saying there's discrimination against muslims in our country is ISI propaganda, then that would be burying our head in the sands. The types of discrimination in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are different. In Pakistan, by the rule of law of the land, a hindu is not equal to a muslim. In India, by law, a hindu is equal to a muslim. But there is a definite huge anti muslim sentiment in the country (particularly in the northern parts) and that's down to the hindutva ideology that's taking over the country, which basically aspires to turn a secular India into a Hindu rashtra, where even by the rule of law, a muslim would not be equal to a hindu, like it is in Pakistan. Now a hindu might think that would be a good thing particularly for hindus but I've always believed infusing religion in the public sphere is highly detrimental to the progress of a society, I don't care what religion that may be, be it Hinduism or Islam or Christianity. It's one of the main reasons why south asia continues to be one of the most backward regions on Earth, only a bit better than sub saharan Africa.

And yes, a lot of my views would be classified under left wing liberalism, which I also know is a widely hated political viewpoint in India. It's actually the Dravidian ideology, which again is a widely hated one in the Indian heartland for its anti caste snd anti religion views. Think we can have differing political ideologies but still have civilized discussions.

Fireworks banned during Diwali. Me and my family have spent many diwalis in India and let off many more fireowrks.

Fireworks are banned in many places. You need to stay updated. Its banned in Delhi NCR where Sehwag lives.

Ok so? We still let them off, by the thousands. Sehwag is trying to claim the Muslims of Kashmir have special exemptions, they do not. Do you not understand or are you just playing dumb to allow Sehwag and may yourself to get away with bigoted views?

So if Indians in USA or Canada support their own Indian team against USA should they be fired?

I bet they would cry about discrimination

Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir – Police in Indian-administered Kashmir have filed criminal cases under a stringent anti-terror law against the students of two medical colleges in the region for celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan thrashed archrival India with a 10-wicket victory in the cricket match held in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday night. India’s loss triggered attacks against Kashmiri students in western Punjab state and a Muslim member of the Indian team was abused online.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, a Himalayan territory claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan who rule over parts of it.

A popular rebellion against the Indian rule erupted in Indian-administered Kashmir the 1990s, with the rebels demanding either a merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan or an independent state.

In such a scenario, an India-Pakistan cricket match evokes strong reactions mainly in the valley, with residents publicly declaring their support for Pakistan to make a political statement.

Following Sunday’s match, there were similar celebrations in the disputed region over Pakistan’s first-ever win against India in a cricket World Cup.

Among those cheering were students from the region’s top medical colleges: the Government Medical College and the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, both situated in the main city of Srinagar. Videos of their celebration outside their residential hostels went viral on social media.

On Tuesday, a senior police official told Al Jazeera that two cases under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) have been filed against an unknown number of students for causing “insult to the national sentiment during the cricket match”.

No student has been named in the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the police and no arrests have been made so far.

But the move has triggered outrage in the region since it comes a day after more than a dozen Kashmiri students were assaulted by a mob in at least two colleges in Punjab for celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India.

The students alleged they were watching the match in their rooms when people carrying sticks attacked them, seriously wounding some.

The UAPA cases against the medical students were filed following a barrage of online trolling, with some social media users saying the students should be “sent to Pakistan” and denied government jobs in future.

During the 2014 Asia Cup tournament, nearly 60 Kashmiri students were suspended by a college in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh after they celebrated Pakistan’s win over India. The charges were later dropped.

Ravinder Raina, the president of the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Indian-administered Kashmir, said all those who cheered for “enemy country” Pakistan will be in jail soon.

“Those people who celebrated Pakistanis’ win in Kashmir or any other place, the case has been registered. These people will be identified and they will be behind bars soon,” Raina, who is based in the southern city of Jammu, told reporters.

Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Indian-administered Kashmir, criticised the attacks on Kashmiris following their reaction to Pakistan’s victory.

“Why such anger against Kashmiris for celebrating Pakistan’s win?” she asked on Twitter.

“One hasn’t forgotten how many celebrated by distributing sweets when [region] was dismembered and stripped of special status,” she wrote, referring to India’s 2019 move.

In August 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government scrapped Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian constitution, effectively stripping India’s only Muslim-majority region of its limited autonomy. The move was followed by a months-long security clampdown, the arrests of hundreds of Kashmiris, and the splitting of the region into two federally controlled territories.

Since then, the heavily militarised region has witnessed unprecedented unrest, with at least 39 people, including 12 civilians, 17 rebels and 10 Indian soldiers, killed this month alone.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the region since 1990 due to the conflict.

A Kashmiri human rights lawyer, who did not want to be named, told Al Jazeera that shouting “Pakistan zindabad” (Long live Pakistan) after a cricket win is not legally wrong.

“The court will ultimately throw out the case against these students, but under UAPA, it is virtually impossible to secure bail,” he told Al Jazeera.

“It is very immature, insensitive and harsh to impose a stringent anti-terror law on students for a mere celebration, howsoever enthusiastic they may have been.”

In a billion plus population, there has to be some idiots to tweet like this , don't think we can generalized this for all Indians. I'm sure similar people re found in each country and Pakistan is no exception .

It's a bit like the crowd abuse in Australia. You can have 50-80 000 people appreciating the cricket on show & 2 drunk idiots create international headlines.

As long as Indian muslims continue to behave recklessly and provocatively, like openly supporting Pakistan, hindutva extremists will continue to hold power in India. Usually minorities are more educated, but you don't see this among Indian muslim minorities. They are just as crazy as their competition.
