KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Shaharyar M Khan on Tuesday claimed that the board will have no objection to any verdict that comes in the spot-fixing inquiry against Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif and hinted that Misbah-ul-Haq could be assigned a directorial role after the Test skipper retires.

In an exclusive interview with Dawn during a brief stopover in the city upon return from Colombo, the outgoing PCB chief pledged that whatever decision comes out from the board-appointed tribunal — which includes retired Justice Asghar Haider, a former legal advisor to the board, ex-PCB chairman Tauqir Zia and former Pakistan captain Wasim Bari — against Sharjeel and Khalid, the PCB will accept it.

“If they are proven guilty then they’ll be duly punished as per rules for bringing the game into disrepute. But if they come out clean then the PCB would accept the decision of the tribunal and will not contest the verdict,” Shaharyar said. “So let us wait and see what happens since the inquiry is in the initial stages. I hope that it ends soon enough so that the nation will know whether they are guilty or innocent.

“One player — Mohammad Irfan — has accepted his guilt in not reporting an approach [from the bookies] to the PCB anti-corruption unit and, as a consequence, has been banned for a year besides getting heavily fined.

“Both Sharjeel and Khalid have denied their involvement in the scandal and have the right to present their case with their lawyers in front of the tribunal, which I know wants to finish this case quickly. It may probably take another five to six weeks before the inquiry is completed,” said Shaharyar.

Commenting on Misbah’s future, Shaharyar said given the immense contribution made by the Test skipper, the PCB is in favour of utilising his services once he retires from the game by giving him a key position in the board set-up.

“Obviously, we just cannot afford to overlook the tremendous services rendered by Misbah. He is a well-educated, honourable, decent man. We would definitely want to make use of his knowledge and could appoint him as Director Cricket, just like ECB has made [former captain] Andrew Strauss as Director of England Cricket [in 2015],” disclosed Shaharyar.

“I believe Misbah deserves this sort of recognition for the services he has rendered for Pakistan.”

Shaharyar also admitted the PCB, in hindsight, erred in making Azhar Ali the ODI skipper in the post-2015 World Cup scenario.

“I think we didn’t realize that the type of one-day cricket Pakistan had been playing was something akin to the game played in the 20th century, as pointed out by Mickey Arthur when he took over as head coach in 2016. Azhar, who otherwise is a very well-behaved and humble person, unfortunately couldn’t change the tempo and as a result we began to slip in the ICC [team] rankings,” the chairman explained. “Therefore, we went for Sarfraz Ahmed who I think has done a wonderful job so far as Pakistan T20 skipper. Now Sarfraz is someone who brings in a huge amount of energy and is dynamic as a leader. He has proved a brilliant choice in T20 and I’m sure he will succeed in changing the fortunes of Pakistan ODI team as well.”

Sharing details of his short trip to Sri Lanka, the PCB chairman revealed that it was an informal visit. “Actually, I had no intention of going in the first place and we could ask [PCB chief operating officer] Subhan Ahmad or someone else to go instead. But I went there at the invitation from president of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena. As a chairman of the Asian Cricket Council, I delivered a dinner speech where the honourable president was also present,” he said.

“I took the opportunity of informally meeting the heads of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh boards and together we discussed several bilateral issues related to the series against both of them this year.

“Bangladesh are due to play Pakistan this year as per FTP scheduling but we are not in favour of going to Bangladesh for the third successive time. If they cannot come here then we could host them in Sri Lanka since hosting our ‘home’ matches in the UAE is now prohibitively expensive and we can’t afford that anymore.

“They are ready to send their high performance squad to Pakistan instead of the national side due to security reasons. Bangladesh have emerged as a much-improved team and we are keen to play them. There is the possibility of Bangladesh hosting the matches and the revenues generated from the series shared. But the likelihood is that we may play at an alternative venue like Sri Lanka,” he added before jokingly saying: “Frankly speaking, we could even play Bangladesh in India if the Indians allow us to play in their country!”

Shaharyar refused to predict a deadline regarding international cricket returning to Pakistan, but said the short visit by a World XI to the country later this year would help in some way. “We are due to host the World XI, assembled through the untiring efforts of Giles Clarke, for a T20 series that would hopefully lead to the revival of international cricket in Pakistan,” he stressed. “Apart from Lahore, matches will also be played in Karachi and Multan as part of our plans to prove that Pakistan is safe for the touring teams to play cricket here. The grounds in these cities are fabulous and matches must be played there.”

Answering another query, PCB supremo confirmed that former Pakistan paceman Kabir Khan would continue in his role as head coach of the women’s national team until the World Cup. “There was some misunderstanding that resulted in media saying Kabir had quit the job because on personal grounds. But I can confirm to you that Kabir remains as head coach of the Pakistan women’s team until the World Cup in England this July.”

Shaharyar, meanwhile, reiterated that he will quit as PCB chairman soon after the ICC meeting in London because of health reasons. “Look, I turned 83 last week and underwent open heart surgery last year. I feel that a younger person should take charge now. To be honest, I can’t combine cricket and teaching because I’ve been teaching at LUMS for a while and would want to serve my energy there after already handing in my resignation as chairman PCB.”

Does anyone know whether Sharjeel will be found guilty or not? I have heard rumours that they could not find any evidence against him. Anyone know if this is true? If he is found guilty then yes he should be banned despite the fact we need him in our team badly

This statement indicates lack of evidence. I think they'll be banned for a year or at most 2 years with heavy fines for not reporting bookies approach. I don't think there will be enough evidence of spot fixing.

Will wait and see next month...everything until then will be conjecture and/or rumours.

yep, part of me saying this is good because we really need Sharjeel in our team. But, if I'm 100% honest, I do believe that Sharjeel fixed so I'm not sure if I really want him. However, there is no way on earth that Sharjeel will risk anything like this again, as long as he's not a complete idiot.

yeah but will others?

either way Pakistan cricket looses, some of the topic coming out of the PCB can be interpreted as laying the ground work for letting sharjeel of with a slap.

Hopefully this can be resolved sooner rather than later so we can all have some closure

What makes you believe it?

he met a fixer who asked him to fix, and guessing which balls would be dots and those balls being dots are too coincidental, especially when you look at the highlights he didn't intend on hitting those balls. But hopefully I'm wrong

WI series will be Misbah's last: Shaharyar

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan on Wednesday said that the West Indies series will be Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq’s final Test series, according to Express News.

Comments came during an informal talk with the media where Shaharyar said that the understanding is that Misbah will retire after the upcoming Test series in the Caribbean.

Shahryar expects Misbah to retire after West Indies tour
The 42-year-old faced criticism from former players after Pakistan lost six consecutive Test matches against West Indies, New Zealand and Australia.

Following the backlash, the 42-year-old said during the second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) while representing Islamabad United, that he will decide his future after the tournament.

as expected, it's the ideal decision in my opinion, win a series there and retire on a high note.

After 7 years of amazing cricket, the legend will finally hang his boots.

Really feel gutted.

But then again, 7 freaken years?

I still remember when i was the only one who use to say that this guy play on till the 2015 world cup, and alot of people doubted me. People believed he wouldn't survive after the 2013 champions trophy and should retire by then. ANd i was like no he will play till the 2015 world cup.

Ends up playing till 2017.

Will miss this guy alot.

If he continues playing domestic cricket, who knows he could get an SOS for World cup 2019 if the odi team is not good enough.

Hahaha won on docile uae pitches..
Took one day team to ruins...
Created dot and hit trend in the team
Continuous chop and changes..
Dependent on his friends..
Never introduced young talent
And somehow he is the legend :)))

Looks like, Shahriar has lost confidence on Misbah, that he might not retire unless forced - hence, he has moved from his stance.

Hope, Misbah doesn't demand a farewell series at home....

How do you know what fixer asked him to do?

and at the end of the day, Pakistan won the test mace with a no.1 rank. A team which had no home ground series.

I dont know what you are on about, but it was known that the west Indies series would be his last, and he never ever demanded a farewell series.

Could a decision be expected that gives sharjeel enough time to be picked for the champions trophy (assuming he is innocent)?

they will reach a decision most likely before Champions Trophy, but he will definitely be banned for 1-2 years as he didn't report a fixer

:)))

You wanna know why we never see young talent?

Because people keep hoping that in 2019 Misbah comes again.

Even Tendulkar would be ashamed to have such fans.

Respect from India, legend player and an absolute gentleman. Always felt like he and Dhoni are brothers.:salute

I dont know what you are on about, but it was known that the west Indies series would be his last, and he never ever demanded a farewell series.

I am on his last stance -
"It's up to Misbah to decide when he retires". This time he has given the indication that, enough is enough - past reputation won't save him from being sacked.

I am not sure, before this statement, how you came to conclusion that WI will be his last series. Never heard anyone, including Misbah to say before that WI is his last tour - all I have heard from him is he needs time to think when to quit.

This time, Shahriar is specific about the time - end of WI series. That's PCB's limit - Misbah can retire before that though. I am sure, Arthur has a big input in this u-turn by Chairman PCB, therefore won't be surprised if one of the fittest player in the team gets injured in the middle of the series .....

Retiring two years too late, caused humiliation to Pakistan but continued to play, not good.

Legend of Cricket, ONLY Pakistani Captian to ever received the number one Test captain mace for Pakistan

it was always on the cards and predictable. pakistan haven't won a series in the windies, and mishap has very much earned the right to try to accomplish that as his swan song.

a superb servant of the country, despite the pathetic management, best of luck to him.

Yes only a number one test captan can lose 6 test against three countries in a row, please stop worshipping personalities, Pakistan cricket should come first.

Not correct, unless you emphasize on the "mace" part, which is introduced recently.

He earned his right to go out at a time of his choosing. Although I wish he had left an example for future generations to show that accountability starts at the top. It's a minor quibble, but he has earned the plaudits

This guy gets really upset when posters are not positive about pakistan cricket

Thank God. This man destroyed our LOI cricket. Never too late i hope.

Best Pakistani captain hands down. Still feel like he has it in him and should carry on. But oh well.. Hope we continue to see him in leagues around the world! Backing Misbah to get a triple in his last series!

The director of cricket role needs to have teeth, there must be a clear job description and responsibilities outlined. There's no point in another non-job like when Javed Miandad was being paid millions for being "DG".

Director of cricket should oversee the captains, selectors and coaches, domestic, A team and U19 cricket, and form the link between the PCB board and the team management.

Given Misbah has played extensively in our domestic cricket, he should know what the strengths and weaknesses of the system are and how to address them.

PCB hierarchy no longer would be responsible for handling day-to-day cricketing affairs, which is a positive in my view given how poorly they've ran the game, leaving them to deal with the administrative and financial issues only.

Speaking to media at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, the PCB chairman said he had not spoken to Misbah on the matter, but believed that the three-match series held in the Caribbean will be his final one.

This is embarrassing for Misbah that Chairman had to go public and made the retirement decision on Misbah's behalf.

if ever there was any doubt how much of an idiot this man is....

there is no other solution than to have the entire board sacked and permanently barred, they are a bunch of morons.

Frankly Pakistan has always produced good wickets and not the pitches that turn squares from day one...
and foreign players used to play spin quite well and now this new lot knows nothing about playing spin....

Good decision to appoint Misbah as Director of Pakistan cricket once he retires.

The only issue I have with this narrative is that its all your eggs in one basket. I think it is fair to point out sarfaraz is yet to be tested.

What about ODIs?

Name me a captain who could defend 220 and less runs.

This guy had the abilty to do that. Did it twice in the world cup and almost pulled it off against Australia

Mohammad Hafeez actually did do that against Australia. A few months back. Not on bouncy Gabba like Misbah either. On flat Melbourne wicket.

Amazing read, guy has an unhealthy obsession with good behavior, honor and decency. This is cricket, not an afternoon tea session with sahib jee. Kick this elitist pompous guy out of the office.

Misbah, Younus to be given PCB roles, says Shaharyar

RAWALPINDI - Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Shahryar M Khan is keen to have services of the outgoing senior Test duo of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younus Khan to keep them associated with the board.

Talking to the journalists at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday, Shaharyar said Misbah and Younus will be offered suitable role in the PCB and hoped that the players would accept the offer to help Pakistan cricket.

Misbah and Younus are playing their last Test series in the West Indies and have already played an influential role in changing the dwindling fortunes of Pakistan team in the Test arena.

The PCB chief was also optimistic about the return of the international cricket to Pakistani grounds and said holding the Pakistan Super League final in Lahore has paved the way for the purpose.

“The PSL final in Lahore was a huge success and eight top security agencies representatives attended the event and highly praised the security agencies armaments. That’ why a World XI is visiting Pakistan in September and let me assure no below par or marginal player will be included in the touring team. Instead, the best players will tour Pakistan, which I am sure will open flood gates of international cricket revival in Pakistan.”

Shaharyar also revealed that the PCB has also proposed to hold the matches in Karachi and Islamabad but the organisers for the touring team agreed to play three matches only in Lahore.

The PCB chief also termed the squad selected for the Champions Trophy a balanced one and cited the ICC’s deadline reason for announcing the squad before the completion of the Pakistan Cup One Day tournament.

When asked about Bangladesh Cricket Board had said they had not received anything officially and heard the cancellation of Pakistan tour through media reports, Shahryar said it is true as I had conveyed them unofficially. “We had toured Bangladesh twice and now we want them to play in Pakistan or at a neutral venue. The UAE is too expensive and we had Sri Lanka in mind but they are also playing home series, so it was decided to postpone the series for the time being.”

The PCB chief also termed the abolition of Big Three from the ICC organisation quite beneficial for Pakistan and also praised the resolve of ICC Chairman Shasank Manhour, who despite being an Indian supported a just cause.

“India is still objecting and wanted to extend the voting from June to September 3, but majority of members had already decided in the favour of new constitution and now India doesn’t enjoy same hold as even Australia and England opposed Big three and countries openly supported the new changes.” He said India still got lime share of revenues as they get 16 percent and England eight percent, while other playing nations will get seven percent.

He said he had talked with India to give Pakistan financial benefits, which the PCB lost due to their back off from proposed bilateral series with Pakistan. “If India did not abide by we will send them legal notice next week through ICC Dispute Resolution Committee, which will decide in next few days. We have consulted top legal experts and they had confirmed that Pakistan had a very strong case.”

Yuni bhai would be more useful as the batting coach of the u19 side or as a mentor in the NCA.

Don't think Younis will be accepting any offers as he mentioned in his interview that he has things to fulfill in the next 5 years before he runs out of energy. Any sort of administrative job is not his cup of tea.

Misbah I think will gladly accept the role but hope he doesn't interfere in the team setup else we will have to bear Azhar (ODIs) Shafiq and a few others for a long long time and we will stay in the rut we are in currently.

How can you give Misbah a role when TTF Haroon Rasheed has already been made director of cricket ? That would've been ideal, and our equivalent to Andrew Strauss's job in ECB.

These roles need to be more than honorary titles, they must be impactful.

It all depends on the pay and other options these guys have available.

If Misbah gets better offers like lets say coaching or TV work.

PCB cannot keep a reserve post for him, because no one knows whether he would accept a post or not. Thus, i think they had to give Rasheed the post.
