"Misbah should have retired after Pakistan was placed at the top of the Test ranking" : Ijaz Ahmed

Dubai: Misbah-ul Haq missed a big chance to retire at the height of his glory, remarked former Pakistan Test star-turned-coach Ejaz Ahmad.

Speaking to Gulf News, Ahmad who is in Dubai as the head coach of upcoming Masters Cricket League (MCL) Academy, said: “Misbah should have retired after Pakistan was placed at the top of Test world ranking. Like Imran Khan who retired after winning the World Cup, Misbah too should have done it after lifting Pakistan to the greatest height in Test cricket. However, his contribution for Pakistan has been immense and [he] would be remembered for it.”

Ahmad feels that Azhar Ali should now take over the Pakistan Test team captaincy. “Azhar has the experience, scored double and even triple centuries in Test matches. He is the best choice at the moment to be given the captaincy as he has lots of experience too.”
Ahmad is delighted that Pakistan had ended the 12-year-drought of beating Australia in Australia in a One-day match. “It is a huge morale booster to break that barrier and hopefully it will help Pakistan in the future too. This is the best opportunity to beat Australia too as they are not the same strong team like in the past,” said Ahmad, who was the most successful among Pakistan batsmen to score centuries in Australia. He had hit six centuries against the formidable Australia through Test and One-day Internationals.

When asked about the prerequisite to be successful against Australian bowlers, Ahmad, who has 10 centuries in Tests and 12 in One-day Internationals, said: “Most of the Subcontinent batsmen refuse to leave the ball outside the off stump and attempt to drive. This results in most of the batsmen being caught in the slips. During my knocks, if Glenn McGrath bowled 100 balls outside the off stump I made sure to leave all of them. I used to wait and play my cut shots and get the runs.”

Ahmad also feels that responsibility has brought the best out of Mohammad Hafeez. “It is good to find Hafeez among the runs after getting the captaincy. He is an experienced player and nothing is better than experience in leading a One-day team.”

Ahmad believes there is lot of talent in Pakistan, but they need to be brought to the fore. “We now have Mudassar Nazar as the National Cricket Academy Director who is very keen for the development of the game. Pakistan’s domestic cricket has not been strong and that is why unlike in the past the number of talented players that used to emerge in large numbers has dwindled. Nazar’s efforts may help to unearth talent. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is playing a vital role too in spotting fresh talent,” said Ahmad, who is the adviser to the Lahore Qalandars PSL team.

“The trial matches we held in the presence of Aqib Javed (former UAE coach), who is the director of Lahore Qalandars, and Mudassar Nazar. The turnout was overwhelming. Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi too held trials to spot talent and all these will now bring out good talent to be groomed for the future,” said Ahmad.

Agree with him regarding Misbah's early retirement.Knew he was successful in Australia but didn't know he was that successful.

That is the general consensus. Misbah did no favours to his reputation and legacy by continuing to wear the captain's arm band after the English series.

Then he would b labelled coward who ran away from tough tours.

The obvious next question is would being called a coward from a small percentage of Pakistani fans better than being called a bad captain by a large number (or even majority) of Pakistani fans?

Agreed. He should have but this is not his fault. He was forced by the PCB to carry on.

If he retired after England, that would've been dis-honorable for him, and he is an honorable man. To leave his side to goto difficult tours without him in the side.. he did the right thing as no one could even fathom Misbah not playing in a Test side with the form he was in vs England and WI..

Those would not have been small numbers thats for sure.

The one who are calling him bad captain (after tours), would call him selfish if he had skip tours.

We were #1 for a very brief period and that was only because the Test Match between the Indians and WI was washed out !!!

PCB could not force him - yes they needed him to lead but how could they force.

Usually PCB has to force Pakistani players to retire - not to stay on.

Agree with him on the Misbah comment, I think most people do

The Azhar comment doesn't make sense
Scoring double and triple centuries doesn't qualify you for captaincy. If that were the case, Younis should be made captain

#1 is still #1.

Also lol at Captain Hindsight aka Ijaz Ahmed. The board asked Misbah to stay, they knew no replacement was groomed and nor would there be time to find one before Australia. Clearly they fancied their chances against this Australian team. It just worked out badly for him and Pakistan unfortunately.

Considering his age, don't think many people would have called him a coward. It's not like he was retiring at 30

Besides, the "coward" thing is overblown. How many captains in Pakistan history can you remember being labeled cowards because they retired at the wrong time

Whereas pretty much every captain can be said stayed on past their welcome

as we care about age before name calling.

as for other players/captains, no one in Pak retired at right time.

IF he had retired...

"Misbah shouldn't have retired selfishly before such a difficult tour."

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

:ibutt

Well he should retire now if he has any dignity left. Won't be surprised if he continues and plays till west indies team. If we win that series misbah fan will start comparing him to Imran and Co saying they never won a series against them and he is the first one to do so.

He could have retired after England tour but before WI series in UAE, no one could have blamed him then.

There is no culture of retirement in Pakistan and Misbah is no different , he is not Imran Khan.

Again, why selectors have to wait for his retirement and make Pakistan team suffer more, why can;t they simply drop him.
