Marais Erasmus of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires has won the David Shepherd Trophy for the ICC Umpire of the Year 2016, it was announced today.

Erasmus was voted by the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees as well as the Test playing captains, and he beats off strong competition for this award from his colleagues Richard Illingworth, Bruce Oxenford and Richard Kettleborough.

Erasmus is the fifth umpire to win this prestigious award after Simon Taufel (2004 to 2008), Aleem Dar (2009-2011), Kumar Dharmasena (2012) and Richard Kettleborough (2013-2015).

Erasmus, 52, made his international debut in October 2007 in an ODI between Kenya and Canada at the Nairobi Gymkhana and was promoted to the elite panel in 2010.

Reacting to the news, Erasmus said: “David Shepherd has been one of the role models for many aspiring umpires and to win the trophy named after him is something to be really proud of. It has been an excellent period of international cricket and I consider myself extremely fortunate to be part of it.

“I thank the match referees and the Test captains for voting me as the ICC Umpire of the Year 2016, but the fact is without the support, help and encouragement of my Playing Control Teams, this would not have been possible. As such, it is appropriate that I win this on behalf of all my fellow match officials.

“I would like to thank my wife Adele and my sons Chris and Geo for their support and sacrifices so that I can live the dream of umpiring at the world stage, as well as my ICC coach, Denis Burns, who during the past three years guided me to become the best possible umpire that I can be.”

ICC General Manager – Cricket, Geoff Allardice, congratulated Erasmus, saying: “The ICC is very fortunate to have such a strong team of umpires, and Marais has been deservedly rewarded for the steady improvement in his umpiring over the past few years. This recognition, voted by the match referees and the Test captains, shows the high regard in which Marais is held by those closely involved with the game.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award.

The 42-year-old was adjudged the winner for inspiring his side to play the game in its true spirit, at the same time lifting the Pakistan cricket team from number-four to number-one on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings. Remarkably, this was achieved without playing any Test matches in his home country.

Misbah is the first Pakistan player to win the award with the previous winners being MS Dhoni (2011), Daniel Vettori (2012), Mahela Jayawardena (2013), Katherine Brunt (2014) and Brendon McCullum (2015). New Zealand also won this award in 2004, 2009 and 2010, England in 2005 and 2006, and Sri Lanka in 2007 and 2008.

Commenting on the news, Misbah said: “I feel honoured and humbled to have won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award. To lift the Test mace earlier this year and now this in the twilight of my career, is a message for every athlete that age is not a barrier as long as the sportsperson maintains highest fitness levels and continues to perform up to international standards.

“As a team, we have focused on playing within the rich traditions of the sport with a positive mindset and approach so that we can entertain the spectators and fans, and at the same time, challenge the oppositions. I am glad that this has been noticed and recognised by the game’s governing body.

I am just glad Misbah is one of those captains that is admired by the foreign and now, national community alike.. this man is a gem...

After so many captains who have embarrassed us to no ends, whether it be biting a ball on TV, or dil baray nahi hai comments, or an Oath Brigade taking place against the captain, allegations of match fixing in the 90s, in-fighting between star players, spot fixing in 2010, rumours of Islamic preaching during tours, or forfeiting a test match... we finally have a captain who just does his job, plays cricket and forgets all extracurricular activities.. Look at the success he has received.. what a model professional and an example to many..

Hardly ever have we had such a controversy free reign in our cricketing history

Agree. He is respected all over. Never heard a thing against him by any fellow Indian.

In fact I feel he is respected more outside Pakistan than inside. :misbah

That has changed alot since his Test Victories against England and making Pakistan no.1 in Test Matches.. I maybe wrong but he is now more popular than Shahid Afridi, since the mainstream media has made Misbah their new poster boy... Afridi is popular because of his social activities now and not for his cricketing performances (even in BPL).. Misbah is now the face of Pakistan and patriotism, some may say he is only below General Raheel Sharif and Imran Khan in popularity

5 years ago who would have thought. Now if you go on social media everyone praises him. That is actually a problem with Pakistani fans. There is no middle ground

I think the push-ups he did as a tribute to the army, and then winning a Test Match against England on Independence Day.. that has changed everything in his favor

There are still a lot of haters who are always bitter of The KING.

and that bitterness is fun to watch, not sure why there's s lot of burn still.

I'd most likely want to hear AlphaFighter 's comments on this !! Savak you have to admit it this man is a gem :P

Misbah please try to hang in there for another 7-8 years to make sure be a ATG of spirit and break more records such as magical 10,000 runs, most catches, most 6s, most evergreen veteran player etc.

I think the England tour played a big factor here.

Remember, there were news item that could had made problems in the England tour.

Misbah was able to downplay alot of it, and kept his team controversy free.

Zaheer Abbas hails Misbah for historic achievement

KARACHI: Legendary batsman Zaheer Abbas has lauded Test captain Misbahul Haq for becoming the first Pakistani to win the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award, describing the veteran cricketer’s feat as a huge achievement.

“Misbah has made Pakistan proud with this award,” Abbas told The Express Tribune. “It had been a long time since a Pakistani received such an honour; this award is something to rejoice for all Pakistanis.”

The 42-year-old Misbah was adjudged the winner for inspiring his side to play the game in its true spirit as well as lifting the Pakistan cricket team from the number four spot to the very top of the ICC Test Team Rankings.

MS Dhoni (2011), Daniel Vettori (2012), Mahela Jayawardena (2013), Katherine Brunt (2014) and Brendon McCullum (2015) are the previous winners of this award.

Abbas, the former International Cricket Council (ICC) President, also appreciated the governing body for recognising Misbah’s services towards the game.

“This Pakistan team has done remarkably well under Misbah. From a deteriorating state he took the team to the top of the world rankings and I am happy he has been rewarded,” he said.

“Mind you, Pakistan have been unable to play matches at home and to lead the team to the top under such circumstances make Misbah one of the best Test captains in the country.”

The ‘Asian Bradman’ further said Misbah did not just lead the team well, his performances with the bat were also pretty impressive.

“Misbah has been performing well with the bat too. By scoring runs at this stage of his career, he has proven there are no age barriers. I back him to continue playing for the team.”

Agreed. Mr.Tuk Tuk is taking all the limelight for Pakistan in this "modern cricketing era"

Well done . Gets way too much hate, one of my favourite Pakistan players of all time although his captaincy can frustrate me.

Tough pill to swallow for many Misbah haters. Congrats Misbah and keep it up champ.

It has worked for him though his defensive style, I can't think of instances where it was pivotal in our demise maybe selection wise things could be better when it comes to his influence but other then that our losses can be attributed to conditions getting the best of us more then Misbah's inept captaincy which has also bought up monumental achievements such as an undefeated streak in the UAE and Test match wins in England

Its worked but there have been tums where it hasn't worked. Didn't help Yasir in the 1st test but he's built a team so suit the style so can't complain too much.

Chairman PCB Shaharyar Khan has congratulated Misbah ul Haq for winning the ICC’s Spirit of Cricket Award. In his message to Misbah ul Haq, he passed his warmest congratulations on being conferred ICC’s Spirit Cricket Award. “I attached great importance to this award as it represents sportsmanship and conduct of the highest award. You and your team have been true ambassadors of Pakistan and you can justifiably regard the award as another feather in your cap.”

What Misbah got that award for , today ?

Misbah, out of no where got some award in today's PSL final presentation. What exactly he had done during the current tournament to deserve one, unless I missed something.

He was awarded for ICC Spirit of Cricket. He was declared a winner in ICC Awards in Sep 2016 and today was just the trophy presentation for that as he was not present at ICC awards night.

What spirit ICC liked in him, for not retiring after losing 6 tests and scoring 73 runs in total ?

Teaching Tuktuk defensive batting to youngster and ruining their career while not retiring .. That's what he should get an award for .. Sorry :) Misbah
