"Misbah will now be solely responsible and accountable for his side’s performances" : Wasim Khan
PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “We are delighted to have someone of Misbah-ul-Haq’s leadership, skill and stature taking on the responsibility of our national team. At the same time, I want to thank all the local and foreign candidates who offered their services, but the panel unanimously put their weight behind Misbah as it believed he was a perfect fit for the dual assignments due to his understanding, knowledge and demands of Pakistan cricket across all the three formats of the game.
“The concept of a head coach also being a chief selector is an innovative one and a new introduction to our system. But, while the PCB has further empowered Misbah, it has also put more responsibility on his shoulders as he will now be solely responsible and accountable for his side’s performances. As always, PCB checks and balances will remain.
“Furthermore, it strategically integrates nicely with our revamped domestic structure where the six head coaches of the first-class sides will also be the selectors. They will provide regular feedback and updates to Misbah on the local players that will assist him in his preparations and planning. Besides, this will also ensure meritocracy in team selections and more onus on the head coaches for their assessments.
“Exciting times are ahead for the national cricket team, which will feature in the World Test Championship, Asia Cup T20 in 2020 and back-to-back ICC T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2021. The PCB has no doubts that under Misbah’s vision and guidance, the team will perform strongly and will succeed in transforming our talented players into world-class performers.”
Wasim Khan press conference:
"We are happily announcing Misbah-ul-Haq as Head Coach and Chief Selector of the Pakistan team. It's a good thing for us. It's also a proud moment. We look back to 2010 when Misbah came in the team, the team was in a bad situation but through leadership, vision and commitment, he again made Pakistan's name prominent. His leadership skills are second to none"
"The Head Coach and Chief Selector dual role is an innovative move. Our domestic structure is also based on innovation. In England we say that if you do the same thing, you get the same results. We are bringing a different system and insha'Allah it will be a good role. People ask questions about accountability for the Head Coach and Chief Selector. Misbah will be the one who's accountable, there will be no grey area, and accountability will be with him for selection and performances on the field. There's no doubt about this. Our 6 cricket association coaches will work with Misbah. Our local coaches, people say, don't get opportunities but we are giving them chances. They will be the eyes and ears for Misbah on the ground because they will be involved day in and day out in the FC system"
"When we approached Misbah about this role, he told us that he was in talks with two PSL franchises so when we decided to offer him this dual role, we reviewed the situation internally. How can we get him to have extra experience? In the next 365 days, we're playing just 42 days of international cricket. In that, 9 days of T20I cricket and 3 days of ODI cricket, that's it. So we were thinking as to how we can give him exposure, considering we have 3 major international events coming up in the Asia Cup and T20 World Cups in 2020/2021. So we decided that if Misbah is approached and given an opportunity, he will be allowed to take it up. He is a leader with us and is also a credible individual in the world. We are very happy and it's a proud moment for the country to have Misbah sitting at the helm"
"The conventional selection committee is no more but the 6 provincial team coaches will work with Misbah. Misbah has knowledge and experience of FC cricket as well"
"PCB has made a strategic decision, because Misbah hasn't coached a team before though he has worked with individuals and world class players. But he doesn't have that much exposure. He is the right person to take us forward. We've decided that if he has a chance to coach a PSL team, that will only benefit Pakistan because we're only playing cricket for 42 of the next 365 days. Working in PSL will give him a chance to work in a high pressure environment"
"This is Misbah's first assignment but the bigger picture is important for us, which is Pakistan's success. PCB believes that he deserves an opportunity if he gets picked by any of the PSL franchises"
"Captaincy will be the decision of Misbah and the Chairman"
"We were internally discussing that the Head Coach and Selector should be the same person but this was a proposal. It depended on the person who came forward. We assessed Misbah's credentials and his knowledge so with him, it was easy for us. It's a big decision. After interviewing Misbah, we told him what we were looking for and he agreed, from my side there was no hesitation. Accountability should rest with one person and there's no grey area about that"
"We are giving opportunities to our local coaches. Those running cricket associations will also have full autonomy and they will be accountable for their work"
"Misbah is being paid a similar amount to Mickey Arthur. He is the Head Coach and Chief Selector, he will be under the same pressure so why would we give him a lower salary"
"The captaincy is the Head Coach's domain"
"The decision of batting coach will be Misbah's decision, he will assess the requirements. His specialism is batting and training also, he can work with the batters during training camps but when it comes to the match situation, it's difficult for him because there's so much to do. So we'll see about the support staff he will have around him and give him whatever he requires"
"When we had the cricket committee meeting and made recommendations about Mickey and the others, the decision was made that now there's no coach so to continue the activities, we requested Misbah to handle these, he didn't ask for it. With the SL series ahead, we had to run training camps and fitness programs, so that's how he became camp commandant"
"The panel that interviewed coaches was a good, independent panel. We thought hard before making decisions, we hadn't decided from before, it was an open process in our minds despite people running stories that it had been decided from before"
"Provincial coaches will write reports about opposing teams' players for the selection process so this will remove politics from the picture"
"Regarding A tours, we will sit down and make a plan. When we visit countries like South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand, we struggle. Our A teams should be visiting these countries every year and we will make a 3 year plan for this after consultation with Misbah"
"The teams that have been selected for the provincial teams will play in every competition for their cricket associations. The players will get chances in different formats. The T20 competition we're holding in October will have 2 positives, one is that it's before the PSL draft so players can impress. Plus, we have T20s in Australia in November so the selectors will get a chance to select the right team. Meritocracy is very important and the schedule will help us to make informed decisions"
"Our FTP was finalised last year already. So we play Tests against SL in December, we have the Australia series, then a series against Bangladesh then PSL. So with scheduling, the challenge is for teams to be available. The schedule that was made last year was the best possible schedule unfortunately. Test cricket is very important for us with the Test Championship in progress so we're going to do all we can to focus on that"
"I want to thank the selection panel for all the work they've done and the previous coaches Mickey Arthur, Grant Flower, Azhar Mahmood and Grant Luden. They have all done a lot for Pakistan and they worked very hard and we must not forget what all they did. I would also like to thank Rashid bhai and Nadeem bhai for the work they did with Misbah to set the teams up and get them up and running"
