A lot of people abroad know him like they know Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna or Hema Malini.

Apparently he was a big cult superstar back in the day.

The taxi drivers abroad generally mention his name to relate to Bharat when I till them I’m from there.

I remember watching his movies in the 90s, but he was also doing some hilarious films around that time, maybe just for the money.

Mithun is a tremendous actor , he won national award with his very first movie. In late 1980s he was as Big as Amitabh Bachchan. Later he moved to Ooty and started acting in B grade movies to secure money for his family.

Among those who had fame as heroes in bolywood he is the most talented and versatile actor.

He ruined his image in 90's by acting in a ton of B-Grade movies with mindless violence. He is a legend in his own way.

His name will never popup when discussing the greats of Bollywood.

Mithun in 80's big star. He was extremely popular in USSR (Russia) for a while due to Disco Dancer being massive hit there. By mid 80's he was the second biggest star in India after Amitabh. He lost his Alist status in early 90's after failed affair with SriDevi. A very underated actor who ruined his legacy by doing lots of B grade garbage in 90's.

To be honest, I never got the appeal of Mithun. I guess he must've been fun in a movie or two and he did some arty-farty Bengali stuff that I personally never saw.

Talk to me about Govinda though and I'm sold. I was a pseud, pretentious teen that rarely saw any Hindi movies but even I couldn't escape the appeal of Govinda. His infectious energy, his gift for physical comedy and his sheer enthusiasm for what he threw himself into was a rare talent and probably under-appreciated.

His movie 'Boxer' was a hit too. :inti

You'll be very surprised how mithun is popular in former USSR region. When I met Ukrainian girls in club, the second thing they will ask is, do you know how to dance "disco dancer"?

At first I thought they were somewhat being sarcastic as I am Indian. But nope, the song started to play in the club and here they are mimicking his dance moves.... They were serious.

He was the hero whose sis got rped 90% of the time in all his movies, has some melodius songs picturised on him

Pyar hamara amar rhe ga yad kre ga jhan.....

All the 90s movies of his had the same plot. In 1 it was the police officer brother taking revenge and in the other a honest guy turned vigilante ! And most common name was Suraj or Shankar .. The 90s movie of his - Gunda - is a cult . Cant believe the censor board approved it. :D

The Soviet Union had a special love for Bollywood.

What groups do you hangout with while abroad? I have never met anyone who says Mithun’s name when talking about India.

Taj Mahal, Cricket, Bollywood, Uber drivers/doordash delivery, scam calls, Sachin, Kohli, Food. These are the topics (not in any particular order) mostly around during initial conversations from my experience.

For first half of Govinda's career (pre Ankhen) he was called as poor man's Mithun. Both Mithun and Govinda were famous as dancing stars in their early career.

Indeed he was a great actor. Although later he didn't care for legacy and made low budget but profitable movies.

I recall reading about a prostitute in calcutta who wanted to study, and when Mithun Da read that he visited her and made her his sister, and sponsored her education. In the pre internet era.

Your circle is limited then.

Russians, Kazakhs, Belarusians, Ukrainians are all crazy for Mithun da.

If you go to a club there and tell you are from Bharat, the girls will tease you by singing Jimmy Jimmy aaaja aaaja

My fiancée is Russian, I asked her, she said she Hasn’t heard of him, showed her the pic and she doesn’t know him.

As per her, he’s not famous at all in Russia,
let alone Russians being crazy about him.

Probably his songs/dance was somewhat famous at one point of time, like Gangnam style, Akon etc got famous/Viral in India. But being crazy about him is stretching it.

Mithun Chakraborty To NDTV On Nepotism: "I Have Never Promoted My Children"

Veteran actor and Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient Mithun Chakraborty recently weighed in on the ongoing nepotism debate in an exclusive interview with NDTV. When asked if Bollywood is a "family industry", the actor said, "Main nahi maanta (I don't agree). Mere chaar bacche hai, aur chaaro hi filmon mein hai. Mai aaj tak kisi bhi producer ko, kisi ko nahi bola ki mere bete ko chance do. (I have 4 kids, and all of them are working in films. Till date, I have never asked any producer or anybody to give work to my sons.)"

Mithun Chakraborty discussed the film careers of his sons, Namashi and Mimoh. He shared that Namashi auditioned for a role in Bad Boy directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, while his other son, Mimoh, worked in Haunted under director Vikram Bhatt. "Uske baad film chali ya nahi chali, wo sab doosri baat hai. (Whether the films worked or not, it is a separate issue.) But I can tell you with all my heartfelt emotions I have never promoted my children and I told them that you have to fight your own battle," he added.

He added, "Agar kisi ka baap hero hai aur uska beta bhi hero bana, toh sirf isliye koi nahi banta hero. Uss mein bhi talent hona chahiye. Aur talent nahi hoga toh thank you very much, aap jaa sakte hai. (If someone's father is an actor and the son becomes an actor too, then it's not just that what makes a person an actor. The son has to have talent as well. If you don't have talent, you will be shown the door). Talent will rule."

Having started his career with renowned Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen's Mrigayaa in 1976, Mithun Chakraborty received the first National Film Award for Best Actor for this film. He won three National Awards, four Filmfare Awards and the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour by the Government of India.
