I remember today one of the commentators compared Abbas with Bhuvi and I thought that was a really good comparison since both are medium fast pacers who bowl around that 130-135 range.

Abbas is relatively young but has impressed, whereas Bhuvneshwar is quite experienced but one would argue Abbas is potentially a better bowler than Bhuvi. What do you guys think?

Abbas:

Matches: 7
Wickets: 36
Average: 17.33
Strike Rate: 42.6
ECO: 2.49

Bhuvi:

Matches: 21
Wickets: 63
Average: 26.09
Strike Rate: 53.1
ECO: 2.94

This thread is solely about Tests as Abbas hasn't played any LOI games.

Not based on matches/wickets or anything but Abbas is similar to Philander.

Just to add to my initial post I'm aware the level of opponents of both Abbas and Bhuvneshwar are quite different, and also Bhuvneshwar has obviously improved a lot over the last 2-3 years.

Once Abbas has played about 15-20 Tests this will be a much better comparison

Commentator compared Abbas to Bhuvenshwar Kumar And Vernon Philander.
Abbas looks like the most thinking bowler from Pakistan since Mohammed Asif.

I would wait till the end of SA series to draw conclusions. So far so good from Abbas

Abbas had a fast start.

You need to wait for another 10 Tests before you can compare.

7 Tests is too small a sample.

Abbas did very well at the dead pitches of uae and also was pick of the bowler in w.i but i agree with you first he needs to play 10 more test

Abbas hasn't played enough much with the Kookaburra (just 2 tests when they played in UAE against SL) which is going to be the acid test. Most of his tests have been with the Duke ball in West Indies, Ireland and England.

It is important he can bowl well with the Kookaburra for 2 reasons:

1. Most countries adopt this ball - as far as I'm aware only England, Ireland, WI and India (which uses its own SG) are the ones that don't use it

2. It is fundamental that he is able to maximise his wicket taking potential while the ball is new since the seam/swing traits of it last only around 20 overs due to the less pronounced nature of the seam. It will be a far tougher challenge but he is remarkably accurate, bowling the ideal length and always targeting the stumps, so it is certainly not beyond his capabilities.

If he succeeds with the Kookaburra he will be our Hazlewood/Philander.

Yeah this looks like a real comparison.
Both are in the same mould.
Bhuvi is deadly in these type of conditions.
Even in india bhuvi has an avg of 26,but we can argue that he is played only on horses for courses basis but still he
Has done well everywhere.

Mohammed Abbas is miles ahead! No comparison! And he’s not even the 5th best bowler of Pakistan!

Perfect example of overhyping.

IF anything Abbas is the least hyped player in Pakistan.

12 months ago, no one even considered him for the Test squad. He called him names, made jokes about him, dissed him.

He still gets a lot of hate for what he is delivering. While Bowlers with worse averages, strike rates, economy rates are being praised.

Yeah agree on him being underrated but you declared that he is miles ahead of bhuvi just after playing 8- 9 test matches.

They use Kookaburras in Pakistan's domestic games and his FC record isn't too bad either although it's not as good as his International performances so far. Besides, we've seen he is good enough from his performances in the UAE.
