"Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik are the backbone of our team" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

What else Sarfraz was supposed to say? He will get his "you know what" fired from the team if he speaks the truth. He is just endorsing the squad he is given by Inzimam. Every captain has done that in the past!

Real culprit is Inzimam..... who selected Malik, Hafeez and Imam.

Hafeez and Malik were selected to make Imam look good.... and you watch, Imam will end up scoring a few runs more than Hafeez and Malik.... and our naive fans will believe that Imam was a great selection because he scored more runs than Malik.

Will these 2 be our saviours?

I will take you to dinner at a restaurant (Max $100 bill for two :) ) of your choice if Malik is!

Hafeez ...... may be ... they way he batted in CT final in 2017. But I doubt it too.

Bits and pieces cricketers who are mates with Sarfraz. This is the attitude which has produced Pakistan's current team of losers.

Two past it has beens most likely over 40 years old are the saviours things can only get better.

Even 40 year old Hafeez would have bowled better than specialist spinner Messi Shah

Pakistan would've chased it if only they had their backbone in the playing XI ;-)

haha - of course but I am just thinking relative to others

Would be good if both are played in the side today.

Okay now I see why everyone is talking about 500 total for this game, mouth watering prospect to see the legendary batting duo on a belter of a wicket.

Once it was Zaheer Abbas and Javed Miandad the team looked up to in the middle order to save the day, then Miandad and Saleem Malik, moving onto Saleem Malik and Inzamam, later Inzamam and Yusuf, then Yusuf and Younis and then Misbah and Younis <— and then they both retired and now you have the magnificent duo of Malik and Hafeez as the backbone :) , waiting till the next solid middle order duo arrives, I think we have found one half in Harris Sohail.

Both had a decent outing on their comeback to the team.

They are both in my WC squad for sure.

Both are useless. There are specialist batsmen out there who can play better knocks. I'd take Ahmed Shehzad over Hafeez.

Selfish players. Not fit for Int’l modern cricket.

The only remaining cricketers from early 2000’s in Int’l cricket. Sick & tired at the sight of these two.

Captain was right. Both still look a cut above the new pretenders like Imad and Faheem who are supposed allrounders.

They have proven to be the backbone of the team for sure today.

Anyone who disagrees doesnt understand cricket Im afraid

They both should have bowled more overs but captain genius forgot they were on the pitch

Some brilliant contributions from the backbone of the team today.

What an absolute travesty that anyone thinks that Malik is the backbone of this team

Malik won't make it as a backbone of the Kenyan team. His bones are fragile.

Of all 10 teams the most unreliable seniors in this WC.
Yes hafeez played a good knock against england but hes way too inconsistent and is a king of soft dismissals. Even against england he was dropped on 14 and played an atrocious shot. HIs innings are usually very short in duration.
Malik i think is now dead as a cricketer, no point in continuing with him

Shoaib Malik has full capability of costing us 3-4 matches with his S/R of 72!!
I am sure, he will.

If arm-chair critics and fans like us could predict this, why couldn't Inzi, Micky and Sarfaraz see this coming?

you never want to see that happen to a player who is in his last few games, but i have to say he deserves it. it is unfair of me, but i expect him to de-select himself.

We knew malik and asif ali werent going to contribute anything coming into the world cup.

They were both barely making runs. Maliks purple patch was over, and asif just isnt good enough.

Yet they not only got selected in the squad, but also in the playing XI.

World cup is not where you want your elderly players to try to get back some form...

A humiliating end to a failure of a career. The CT win helped to extend Malik's and Hafeez's career

thats true both should have retired with dignity after CT 2017. But these shameless old men want to go out disgracefully pelted with rotten eggs. makes my blood boil watching the current state of the team.

Ideally looking back Shoaib Malik and Mohammed Hafeez should have retired after the Champions Trophy win. Slightly embarrassed for them now and Pakistan cricket am sure all the commentators players etc were laughing at how Pakistan’s middle order is Hafeez and Malik. The so called backbone of the team, yeah right that’s not even funny that’s how stupid that statement is.

Well i mentioned the statement about breaking their knee caps ambiguously open to argument as these shameless old men like shoaib malik and hafeez wont retire with dignity. As for mentioning umar akmal put it this way he would have done a lot better than the current bunch of crap we have. Ill take a quick 40 of 30 balls any day of the week. Do your research kid. iv'e watched followed and played cricket for 25 years. Haris Rauf was a must next coming of Bumrah but our coach thougth hes not ready i can point out numerous blunders.

Geoffrey Boycotts grandmother could have scored more runs than Asif ali and Shoaib malik. That is a low bar. But Umar akmal is in no way the solution to this team.

He is a mentally weak player, who thinks he can bat at number 4. But in all honesty he does not have the temperament. A decade ago, he made a good hitter, but it seems he has lost the ability to do that now too.

Need to look beyond him and find someone better.

Haris Rauf? I already think selecting Hasnain and rushing him into a world cup was a terrible move, you want to add Haris to that list too?

Selecting young untested kids for a world cup isnt the smartest move.

If Malik is our backbone then our batting lineup is diagnosed with scoliosis.

Biggest mistake Sarfaraz made since CT was to back Hafeez and Malik like he has. It’s affected his own performance with the bat as he hasn’t been able to bat in top 4 and then the performance of the team as a result. Sarfaraz wasn’t brave enough and ultimately that has been his downfall.

What is this stupid 'senior' culture we have in pakistan, no one over official age of 33 should be allowed to play for the national team, firstly because you can add 5 years to every pak players age, secondly because these guys don't go with respect, you have to kick them out.

But nooooo their fan-boys said they are crucial to this team

That’s a insult. People with scoliosis are able to do things.

Yeah I'm not being disrespectful to people diagnosed with it, I'm just saying how fragile our batting is. Stop trying to twist my words to suit how you want to see it in an attempt for other people to "call me out"

Him and Arthur had the world at their feet at that time. but ultimately you need a board that will back you. Imagine a strategic planning session in PCB where ppl are discussing "guys, what should we do about malik and hafeez"

Its not in our nature to make these tough decisions. YK pressured himself to stay in the odi team post world cup, and once selected he retired after predictably failing in his first game.

Wth?? Where did I try to insult you?

What I meant was that people with said condition are more useful than these lot.

There was no malice or anything personal in his post, just criticizing Malik and rightly so.

Oh calm,

Yeah Malik's headspace isn't right due to the personal issue he had prior to the world cup, him and Asif Ali need time to themselves so we should play Haris in their place.

Former Pakistani players have come down heavily on all-rounder Shoaib Malik for his first-ball duck during the 89-run loss to India in a World Cup match, saying the veteran should consider his career over after the debacle.

Malik, 37, had said early this year that the World Cup would be his last ODI assignment with Pakistan as he would retire and focus on the World T20 next year in Australia.

But with just eight runs under his belt in three matches in the World Cup, many former players believe that Malik might just have played his last one-day international for Pakistan in Manchester on Sunday.

“He himself has announced before the World Cup that he would retire from ODIs after the event. Given his performances in the tournament so far I don’t see him playing again in the remaining four matches,” former test spinner Iqbal Qasim said.

The former captain, who appeared in 35 Tests before announcing his retirement from the format in 2015, has played in 287 ODIs and 111 T20 internationals as well.

Captain, Sarfraz Ahmed and coach Mickey Arthur backed Malik for the game against India but he failed to deliver.

“I think his career is over for Pakistan and I don’t see him playing any further in this World Cup. To select him again would be a big mistake,” said former batsman Mohammad Yousuf said.

Malik has accumulated 7534 runs and taken 158 wickets in ODI. He made his debut for Pakistan in 1999 in an ODI against West Indies at Sharjah making him and West Indian, Chris Gayle the only two players in this World Cup with 20-year international careers.

Malik & Hafeez should be in a old peoples home, but they can get away with it because they will be replaced with equal mediocrity.

Only matter of time mohsin khan is made head coach & Asad Safiq is recalled.

Pakistan has to drop Hafeez forever from ODI team

Williamson to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, and that's the most Hafeez way to get out! The man who holed out to Aaron Finch and lost his wicket to Aiden Markram now charges down the pitch to Williamson, and smashes it right down cow corner's throat. In the xact spot he gave it away against Australia
Mohammad Hafeez c Ferguson b Williamson 32 (50b 5x4 0x6) SR: 64.00

Come on now, he is losing his wickets to non-bowlers. He has to go. Enough already.

Just opened the door for New Zealand at a crucial stage in the game

Thread is made after every ICC tournament barring CT17 where it was made as well tbf but just in the middle of tournament

Commentators on Hafeez dismissal vs New Zealand:

"Hafeez's shot was brainless, it really was" : Nasser Hussain

"The space between his ears needs a revisit" : Ramiz Raja

Who's in the squad right now that can replace him in the World Cup, just curious?

Asif

Can’t do any worse, plus it will let Haris and Sarfraz to move up the order

I don't think they'll ever do it though because Hafeez provides a bowling option and because of his 80 vs England.

I've been supporting the seniors but Hafeez really messed it up for Pakistan there, no need for that shot at all.

What's the point in picking experienced players when they make amateurish decisions?

Oh I know they won’t

They should do, we have Haris’s bowling now and even that 80 from Professor had the standard brain ****, he was just fortunate that Roy had butter fingers

Don’t Blame Malik and Hafeez.

Blame Inzamam, Mickey, and Sarfraz. They are asking these two to do things they are incapable of.

Good points but the Pakistan think tank aren't that brave to make such bold decisions. Asif Ali could help us post big scores and can especially help us up our NRR against Bangladesh and Afg. if Pakistan win today.

Hafeeez showing his age in fielding - very sluggish
