Given the recent developments and promotion of "Professor is a great bowler" myth, I feel this needs a thread.

Since his action issues began the Professor has taken:

14 wickets from 23 innings at 53 at an economy of 4.48

Outside of Asia, though excluding WI as those pitches are better for spin than even Asia at times, the Professor has taken :

1 wicket from 9 innings at an average of 316, economy of 5

he has not bowled out a single time in that period

So is this who is crucial to our success? We know he hardly bats well, has a seniority complex and is probably the worst fielder in the side now,

There is no doubting the fact that his economy reads brilliantly however

1. How much of it is duty to his pause and quick arm release which is clearly whats causing him to chuck

2. Our success is built on wickets. I reckon Haris could do a similar job. When he was in the side he took more wickets on average at a similar economy rate and that too with a far worse bowling attack supporting him

3. In a lot of the games where professor was so "crucial," Imad hardly bowled and Shadab never filled his quote. Well, Shadab is getting better and better. Plus as he has proven himself as a batsmen, and because we have Faheem as well, not to mention Hasan Ali's batting as well we can entertain thoughts of playing another spinner. Raza Hasan is decent batsmen, and his bowling was known for being miserly. He could easily replace Imad. Plus Imad himself has 6 wickets at 47 in england, with a better conomy rate than Proffesor as well.

So please Pak fans fight against the Stockholm syndrome and let go of the last member of the entitlement senior brigade.

we got over :yk2 :afridi1 :misbah3
We can get over the professor as well

So in the last 2 years he's hardly done anything with the ball and with the bat other than that knock in CT final he's hardly done anything. But according to some he's an important player :)).

as i said Stockholm Syndrome. He has held us hostage for a good three years now, and a good portion of the prisoners think he is a sobers for our team.

Unfortunately we could be blessed with his presence till the 2019 WC

I think he if doesn't score anything significant vs NZ and is playing as a specialist batsmen, he could be dropped.

His stats may not be great but if u look closely he holds the scoring rate back from his end which causes pressure on opposition immensly and many times his tight bowling provides us with crucial breakthroughs. He may not be a wicket taker but his economy in current era is extraordinary.
ps em not a fan of him but agree or not, his bowling plays a huge part causing breakthroughs at crucial moments many times.. like he did against england in CT semifinal and against southafrica..

His bowling is vital. Allows us to play wicket takers and somebody with an economy of 5 is actually worth a lot these days.

why cant Imad or Raza Hasan do that job?

As i said in the original post, Imad hardly bowled in the champions trophy?

Please dont pull out the offspiner excuse

He’s smarter than that :(

After 1-2 failures he will get “injured”

I beg to differ on this, Hafeez has played a vital role for Pakistan in last few years. He may not have been as charismatic as some of his comrades but he has filled in the role of an all-rounder better than anyone else.you don't get to be rated no 1 allrounder if you are not worthy of it.In Pakistan you have this liking of a player with flair but to me he was a decent means to an end. His ability to choke the opposition is quite understated. Whilst he wasn't a good enough to qualify an a batsmen alone I did take him as an allrounder any day.
P.S his stats are quite similar to the allrounders Pakistan has produced in post Imran era.

Why do some Pak fans revere Hafeez? What special has he done in his entire career? I'm pretty sure there are plenty of youngsters waiting who can perform 10X better than him if given a change.

He played the innings of his life few months ago. Any decent person with an ounce of shame would've retired at ripe old age of 37, helping lead the team to a big title.

But ofc he keeps on chucking because why not.

Then again, legendary selector and coach who back him have to take hefty amount of blame as well.

Honestly speaking, what was so special about that innings? The game was already set. All he did is what any other batsman at that stage would have done, try and score some quick runs? Please don't be annoyed, I'm merely speaking as a neutral fan. And if you have any doubts, Pakistan demolished us in that match with every bit of their merit.

Not neutral, but objective.

He will hang around with bat but i think NZ tour is important where he fails as a batsman & that will lead to his exclusion.

As an all rounder he is doing pretty well as per our Pak standards but as a specialist batsman he needs something special.

I think only one of Hafeez / Malik needs to play. With the latter performing brilliantly over the past few seasons and also being able to bowl, he should be preferred, and Hafeez's slot should go to a stable, dependable middle order bat (I would prefer Haris Sohail, but Saad Ali would do fine too). Another alternative we can try is to move Sarfraz to 4 and try out a hitting all rounder (Hammad or Yamin?)

Hafeez has a decent record in NZ, so I think he will stay for a while (range: 6 months - next worldcup) longer.

Malik has hardly bowled since 2015 and Hafeez is the superior bowler. But yeah I agree,Hafeez needs to be dropped.

Yup, I know. But Pakistan has been a traditionally good bowling unit, but poor at batting. Keeping Hafeez means better bowling and poorer batting. Keeping Malik means poorer bowling but better batting. I think we can afford to slice out a piece of our bowling pie if it leads to a more complete batting one.

Nah man I don't get offended, it's just cricket lol.

Honestly for us Pak fans it happens far too often that either we bat in a rut from start to finish or start off well and then none of our batsmen are brave enough in the middle order to push on and NOT lose the momentum.

So many examples throughout the years. 3rd ODI I think vs NZ in NZ last year, 2nd ODI vs Aus in 2014. Got amazing starts then lost the plot.

Babar wasn't in a rush, and let's be honest, not the greatest accelerator, Malik got out. Imad was trying to dab with the bat. Sarfraz as well, not the biggest hitter.

And given how Hafeez is a bottler in crunch games, pressure was on him to perform and he delivered. By his standards, this was the innings of his life.
