Henriques replaces Watson in squad for Hobart ODI

Moises Henriques has been drafted into the Australia squad for Friday’s Carlton Mid ODI Tri-Series match against England in place of fellow all-rounder Shane Watson.

Watson reported tightness in his right hamstring during training at Blundstone Arena on Thursday morning and has been stood down from the match as a result.

Henriques will link up with the squad in Hobart on Thursday evening and, as a result, will miss the Sydney Sixers – Sydney Thunder KFC Big Bash League (KFC BBL)encounter at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

However, Henriques, along with Shaun Marsh and Cameron White – two other players drafted into the Australia squad for Friday’s match – will be released to their franchises for the KFC BBL semi-finals that are scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Explaining the inclusion of 27 year-old Moises Henriques, National Selector Rodney Marsh said: “Moises is one of our leading all-rounders, he has international experience, and in Shane Watson’s enforced absence it made perfect sense to draft him in for this match.

“The intention is to release Moises, along with Cameron White and Shaun Marsh, after the match as it is our expectation that we will have George Bailey, Mitchell Marsh and David Warner available for selection for our match in Sydney on Monday.”

The squad is: Steven Smith (captain), Patrick Cummins, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Moises Henriques, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Gurinder Sandhu, Mitchell Starc, Cameron White.

A Question For you that why henriques was never considered again for test cricket? He scored a 81* on a 4th day pitch at chennai.....I believe he is much better than watson.

Just rest Watson, last thing Australia need is him getting injured before the WC

Nobody can say that these snapperheads aren't being given chances.

Watson sucks balls in Test cricket but I reckon Iglesias is worse. Iglesias can't bat and can't bowl.

Mitch Marsh is the chosen next gen allrounder.

I'd assume that think Henriques is a good shield player with out the ability to take the step up

He is "rested". Sore hamstring and a sore throat from talking too much.

More like they didn't want to make a choice between White and Marsh just yet so decided to give them both a go.

Noway Clarke will be fit

I thought they had rested Davey for a sprained tongue

He is no good, lol at better than Watson. One fluke doesn't mean he is any good. But he plays for the right state and one of our selectors loves him.

And the other option is literally Dan Christian

Signed for Surrey. Amazing that he was a bright prospect for Aus now they're littered with these all rounders.

Moises Henriques: Surrey sign Australia all-rounder for T20 Blast

Surrey have signed Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques as an overseas player for their T20 Blast campaign.

The 28-year-old, who has played three Tests, six one-day internationals and four T20 internationals, will join once he completes his commitments in the Indian Premier League.

"It's a club with a proud history and an exciting squad," he said.

"I'm really looking forward to playing for Surrey and I hope to play my part in achieving success this summer."

Henriques is Surrey's second overseas signing for 2015, following the capture of Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara.

Henriques, the captain of New South Wales Blues and Big Bash side Sydney Sixers, will also provide cover for Sangakkara in other formats when the 37-year-old is on Test duty later in the season.

Henriques, who led the Sixers to the final of the Big Bash this year, will play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, which runs from 16 April to 1 June.

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart described Henriques as "a fine all-round cricketer" who would "add great depth" to the squad at The Oval.

The Portugal-born right-hander averages 23.20 with the bat in Twenty20 cricket and has taken 70 wickets at an average of 29.61 with his medium pace.

Anyone else think that Henriques is way out of his depth in international cricket? He's 30 years old and even looks average in domestic cricket. What do the Australian selectors see in him?

He's friends with Warner from Sunrisers Hyderabad. Batted at #3 for them.

That has nothing to do with it.

Henriques is what you call a domestic bully- scores runs for fun in the Matador Cup but looks useless at the international level.

The former Test all-rounder took personal leave from the Big Bash League in December, returning weeks later without the pressure of captaincy.

On Tuesday night, the 31-year-old revealed he has been a “long time sufferer of mental illness”, as he prepares to sleep rough to raise funds for youth homelessness.

He added on social media: “During this time, I was extremely fortunate to have amazing support and love from family and friends.

“Add to that the huge backing from my employers and the huge amount of resources we have at hand as professional athletes to guide me through my recovery.

“It dawned on me during my struggle, how would someone cope with mental health challenges without these support structures in place to help them.”

Henriques said without support from family, friends, employers and finances, he wasn’t sure how people with mental health issues would “survive”.

“Young boys and girls have to go through this everyday - they often end up with addiction problems or homeless,” he said.

Henriques first spoke about his absence from cricket in March, telling the Sydney Morning Herald he wasn’t looking to retain his NSW captaincy and was happy to play under Peter Nevill.

He said he felt guilty taking time away from the game but it allowed him to “get a few things right” mentally.

“With a couple of weeks away I’ve started to feel much improved and in a much clearer head space,” he told the publication.

Henriques will be one of the 21 Australian athletes — including former Australia captain Greg Chappell and seamer Mitchell Starc — participating in the Sports Stars Sleepout at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The Sydney Sixers star by Wednesday morning had raised for The Chappell Foundation (TCF) more than $1,500 of his $3,000 goal, while the foundation had raised more than $21,000.

Henriques recently returned from Canada where he played in the Global T20 tournament for Montreal Tigers.

He played in all six of its matches, making 221 runs at 36.83, including two half-centuries.

‘I was crying so heavily and I was shaking’- Moises Henriques reveals that he tried committing suicide in 2017

Moises Henriques, the all-rounder from Australia has opened up on his battle with depression. And, he also revealed that once he also thought of committing suicide during a Sheffield Shield game. But it was due to his near and his dear ones that he decided against it.

In the recent past, the count of players struggling with mental health issues has seen a significant rise. This issue came into the spotlight after Glenn Maxwell, the prolific Aussie all-rounder took an indefinite break from international cricket during the T20I series between Australia and Sri Lanka. Many players like Sarah Taylor, Jonathan Trott and Will Pucosvski are part of this list, who once reported about their mental health problems.

Moises Henriques reveals something shocking

In a podcast, Moises Henriques said that if anyone checks on google about symptoms of depression then he was having every single one of them in 2017. The Aussie international added that he was going through a very bad phase and also lost 10 kg weight in four weeks at that time.

“If you looked up the depression symptoms on Google, I was ticking off every single one of them, and quite severely. I lost about ten kilos in maybe four weeks. I went from 98 kilos to 88 kilos in the space of four weeks,” Henriques told Neroli Meadows on the Ordineroli Speaking Podcast.

The 33-year-old recalled an instance from a Sheffield shield game and said that he won the toss and elected to bowl against Tasmania at Bankstown Oval. As per Henriques, he had expected a greener top where the bowlers will surely get some help from the track but that didn’t happen. The batting side declared their side on Day-2 after posting a mammoth total of 450 runs on the scoreboard.

He said that in the 1st innings his side was reeling out at a score of 90 for a loss of five wickets. Moreover, he also failed to score big in that match as he got dismissed after scoring just 20 runs in his inning. Henriques recited that while going back home at the end of Day-2, he was driving his car at very high speed and he thought to go and bang it into a poll. But, the thought of its consequences stopped him from doing the same.

Afterwards, he began crying in the car with tears rolling down his cheeks. “I won the toss at Bankstown Oval in a Shield game against Tasmania, and we elected to bowl on what I thought was going to be a green seamer. At the end of the day, they were 2/290. Come day two, they get 450, declare, and we’re 5/90 going into the end of day two. I got out for like 20-odd.

“I remember driving down the M5 back home, doing 110 km/h, and I remember thinking to myself in the car, ‘If I just ran straight into this pole here, what would happen? What would be the consequence of what would happen?’ I can’t do that. It’s not fair on my brothers, it’s not fair on [my partner] and it’s not fair on all these people who are there for me.

I can’t leave my team with ten men for the next two days. Also, I ended up having to pull over because I was crying so heavily and I was shaking. I had to pull over, just took five minutes,” the cricketer said.
