KARACHI: A rainy spell may soon be dispelling the heat and humidity in Karachi as the monsoon system approaches.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the metropolis is likely to receive rain on Thursday and Friday, along with most of the rest of the country.

Rain and thundershower with gusty winds is expected today at isolated places in Bannu, D.I. Khan, D.G. Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Sukkur, Larkana, Sh. Benazirabad, Kalat divisions and Kashmir.

Mainly hot and dry weather is expected elsewhere in the country.

The weather remained hot and dry in most parts of Pakistan during the past 24 hours. However, rain with gusty winds occurred at isolated places in Faisalabad, D.G. Khan, Lahore, Malakand, Zhob divisions, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Met has forecast monsoon rains beginning from July 1 in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Pakistan is a weird country.... there is drought and low flow condition throughout the year, except for June-August when it rains and often rains enough to cause flooding. Why not build dams to capture this rainwater so that there isn't drought during the rest of the year

KARACHI: Authorities declared an emergency across Karachi on Thursday in view of the Meteorological Department’s forecast of heavy rain in the metropolis for the next 48 hours.

The weather monitory body has predicted heavy showers with gusty winds in Karachi and other parts of the country today as well as tomorrow, spurring the city authorities to precautionary action.

Though widespread showers are yet to begin, rain has been reported in New Karachi and around Shahrah-e-Faisal, where motorcyclists were stuck due to gathering water on the road.

Earlier, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, declaring a rain emergency, readied water-drainage machines, generators and cranes and instructed its field staff to remain on a 24-hour alert.

Despite advanced warning by the Met Office and the Supreme Court’s orders to clear stormwater drains in the city, several drains remain clogged with garbage, posing a threat to settlements located in their vicinity.

The 28-kilometre long Gujjar Nullah, along with stormwater drains in Khamosh Colony and Teen Talwar Clifton have still not been cleared and restored to their original width.

For Thursday, the Met Office has forecast rain-thundershower with gusty winds at scattered places in Zhob, Kalat, D.I. Khan, Mirpur Khas, Lahore, Gujranwala divisions, Kashmir and isolated places in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat, Mardan, Sargodha, Rawalpindi, D.G. Khan, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Karachi, Larkana, Hyderabad, Makran divisions, FATA and Gilgit-Baltistan.

For Friday, rain-thundershower with gusty winds is expected at scattered places in Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Karachi, Kalat, Zhob, Bahawalpur divisions and Kashmir, and at isolated places in Malakand, Hazara, Kohat, Bannu, Peshawar, DI Khan, DG Khan, Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Quetta divisions, tribal areas, Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Pre-monsoon rains in scattered places in Balochistan have increased water levels in Hub dam by a foot, said Project Director Sohail Khan.

The official explained that the rainwater from faraway mountainous areas of the province took two days to reach the dam. The inflow of rainwater is continuing, and with more rains expected today the dam levels may improve further, he added.

Earlier this week, water levels at the Hub dam were reported to have dropped to a dangerously low level, creating an acute shortage of water in Karachi and surrounding areas.

Three dead as rain wreaks havoc in Lahore

Three people died in Lahore Monday night as rain continued to wreak havoc across Punjab.

The rain resulted in 150 electricity feeders tripping in the city, plunging different areas of the city into darkness.

According to Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) officials, work is underway to bring electricity feeders back online.

The total amount of rain recorded was 170 millimetres in the city.

Heavy winds and rain resulted in three people being electrocuted, two in Rewaz Garden while a third was electrocuted at Qurtaba Chowk, in the old city area.

The deceased included Rewaz Garden employees Amanat and Shazaib, while motorcyclist Akber was electrocuted at Qurtaba Chowk after coming in contact with live electrical wires.

Moreover, the flow of traffic was severely affected after water accumulated in low-lying areas.

A warning was also given out for Lahore airport due to the weather conditions, stating that routine flight operations may be affected.

Rainwater also accumulated at DHQ hospital in Gujranwala with hospital officials saying work is underway to remove it.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rain in the next two days.

On the other hand, the PMD has forecast rain along with thundershower with gusty winds in Hazara, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha and Faisalabad divisions along with Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

NDMA sends out monsoon alert, expects more urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi

At least six people have lost their lives in monsoon downpours that have caused the streets of Lahore to flood, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Tuesday.

Of the six who died in Lahore, four passed away due to electrocution while two others lost their lives after being buried under the debris of collapsed buildings.

A large sinkhole has also appeared on the Mall Road near DPO Chowk. It has filled with rainwater and it is feared that the water may affect the underground Orange Line Metro station nearby.

The destruction has been caused by heavy downpours that dumped 177 millimetres of rainwater on the city over the past 24 hours.

In light of the situation, the NDMA has also sent out a monsoon alert, warning that more rainfall is expected in the next 48 to 72 hours.

According to the NDMA, there may be flooding in the River Ravi and areas connected to it. The alert has also said that there may be some urban flooding in Rawalpindi as well.

Irked citizens were quick to remind former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif about his claims that his government has turned Lahore into Paris.

Punjab Caretaker CM Hassan Askari, while visiting affected parts of Lahore, told the media that a committee will be formed to find out what caused the sinkhole at DPO Chowk.

"Whoever is found responsible will be held accountable," CM Askari said while adding that the previous government is responsible for the chaos that has ensued because of the rains.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan also visited the affected area and said that "[politicians] should know that they cannot face the people when they haven't spent their money properly."

He also reminded the public that this election is the time for them to decide "if they still want to be ruled by these pharaohs who have taken turns to ruin this country in the past 30 years".

LAHORE: Death toll in Lahore over the past two days has risen to 15 with more than 50 people reportedly being injured in rain-related incidents.

At least 15 people have been killed while 50 others were injured in rain-related incidents including short circuits and roof collapses.

In Lahore’s Jauhar Town, a man and his son were killed while his three-year old daughter was injured after their roof caved-in.

Heavy rain in Lahore and other parts of Punjab have brought life to a standstill.

Choked drains, broken roads and faulty wiring have led to enormous damage and loss of life and property.

On the second consecutive day, lanes, streets and roads were flooded with rain water while the administration struggled to settle the choked drains. Heavy equipment was in place to remove water from various places.

Incessant showers also led to power outages. According to reports, over 300 electric feeders tripped in Lahore alone. Citizens have reportedly faced traumatic losses in property as waters up to three feet pooled up in the houses.

The city administration has fixed a sinkhole that emerged at GPO Chowk in Lahore yesterday. Officers from Pakistan army assisted the administration to fill up the 20 feet deep and 40 feet wide hole.

Been raining cats and dogs since morning here in Srinagar. The first hour and a half was an absolute downpour. And now its raining a decent amount. All the streets are filled up thanks to non-existant drainage system. Such rains bring back the memories of 2014 floods.

The corrupt BJP-PDP government did absolutely nothing in terms of deepening Jehlum tributaries after those 2014 floods. All the money went to their pockets. They have created a dangerous situation for the people here. September is the actual season where there is risk of floods. Really hope its not a disaster in the waiting due to the corruptness of politicians.
