Quran tafsir in English

I am hoping inshallah to make an effort to better understand the Qur'an and I am currently reading a translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali.

I would appreciate if any brothers (or sisters) could suggest a good English tafsir (commentary) of the Qur'an.. to hopefully help my understanding.

Ma'riful quran by mufti shafi saheb is brilliant.

Thanks for the suggestions, brothers.

I am looking to see if I can read some sample of these tafsir online, just to see which one would be easier for me to understand.

Another suggestion a friend has made to me is to begin by reading a short (single volume) commentary on the Qu'ran, like this one. This is called Thematic Commentary of the Qur'an, by Shaykh Al-Ghazali.

and maybe once I finish that, I can start reading a more detailed tafsir such as the two you recommend..

Do you think this would a be good approach?

Download the software Quran Auto Recitation. Search that in google for more information including the English translation of the Quran. It's the finest software i've ever used.

Ive been looking for a good one myself for a while!

There is one quite detailed famous one (30 volumes) by Sayid Qutb. Online though I have seen good video urdu tafseers (very good in fact) by Dr Israr Ahmed - you can check out on YouTube.

any ideas of who to begin with? Tabari? Ibn'Kathir or Jalalayn?

Also looking to get a sufistic approach as well. :moyo
