Azhar and Yousuf literally took grace to regions of divinty carrying a widow like a violin .Their strokes resembled the touches of a painters brush.Marytn and Waugh were elegance personified .VVS Laxman to artistry to dimensions rarely traversed.Mahela's strokes gave vibrations of the notes of a flute.Even if more than often carrying out a combing operation Anwar ,Yuvraj and Lara never lost their artistic touch.Ganguly often looked like an incarnate of David Gower in terms of fluidity.Williamson,Aravinda and Amla could single-handedly carry their teams over the line to achieve victories but still never at the cost of grace. On his day Carl Hopper could go on song like few.

Laxman was the ultimate champion in bissecting a field as well as Lara .Azhar's leg glance or leg side play was magical .Even if hitting sixes Yuvraj revealed the grace of a poet,as few ever did.On the onside Mark Waugh wast he most virtuous. When driving Mohammad Yousuf depicted the grace of a priest bowing before God.Ganguly was the ultimate master of offside play.

Didn't hit the heights but I really enjoyed John Crawley's batting. Crawley had supple wrists and was very good on the leg. His footwork, coupled with said wrists, saw him negotiate spin elegantly.

2.Mohammad Yousuf

5.V.V.S.Laxman

6.Mahela Jayewardene

8.Brian Lara

9.Yuvraj Singh

10.Saurav Ganguly

13.Hashim Amla

14.Rohit Sharma

These are the only players I've watched live over the years & TBH all of these really had attractive batting styles. But Babar Azam needs to be on this list, he is one of the most attractive players I've ever watched live.

No Hafeez on the list and babar also have played enough game to be in this list. Hafeez specially vs pace is delight to watch, for all his short coming the power and fineness he posses is second to none.

For me, I'd rank it as follows:

1. Waugh, M
2. Martyn
3. Anwar
4. Azharuddin
5. Laxman
6. Sharma
7. Azam
8. Lara
9. Hooper
10. Amla
11. Clarke
12. Bell
13. Jayawardene
14. Kohli
15. Root

Yuvraj's gotto be in that list. Also Kohli should be in the top 5. Every stroke of his is so crisp, assured and elegant. Very stylish

Yousuf should be in that list. More stylish than most

Yousuf should be in that list. More stylish than most

Sure, it was perhaps an oversight on my part.

I never enjoyed watching Jayawardene bat to be honest, so I'll discard him, and put Yousuf at around 7, the others all drop down a slot.

Among Sri Lankan players I personally found Marvan Atapattu and Aravinda De silva to be more stylish that Jayawardene and Manhanama.

Robert do come here MMHS also

Mohammad Yousuf and Zaheer Abbas the most stylish Pak batsmen of all time. Inzi had lazy elegance. Babar Azam currently. Honorable mention: Yasir Hameed.

David Gower as well on addition to the names already said in above posts. Even his commentary is elegant.

Mohammed Yousaf is the most stylish batsman ever in the game. Azharuddin doesn't even come close.

There were probably many many stylish batsmen, who could fit in my list, but I am gonna make a list of only the players I have seen playing live (No specific order):

1. Mohammad Yousuf
2. Brian Lara
3. Kumar Sangakara
4. Virat Kohli
5. Ian Bell
6. Rohit Sharma
7. Babar Azam
8. Kevin Pietersen
9. Yuvraj Singh
10. Mahela Jayawardene
11. Vvs Laxman
12. Mohammad Hafeez
13. Joe Root
14. Ricky Ponting
15. AB De Villiers

there are probably many that I have left out, but these are the ones that came to my mind right now.

VVS

Lara

Gilchrist - just a lovely, pure bat swing.

De Silva

Tendulkar

The ones I enjoyed most from a batting style POV. A few might question Tendulkar but his straight & on drives were impeccable and even as a veteran he would play an uppercut from nowhere in a Test to take my breath away with how simple & how very late he played it.

Mohammad Yousuf and Zaheer Abbas the most stylish Pak batsmen of all time. Inzi had lazy elegance. Babar Azam currently. Honorable mention: Yasir Hameed.

15 Most stylish batsmen of all in order ?

15 BATSMEN WHO GAVE CRICKET ITS POETRY AND TOOK AESTHETICS TO SUBLIME REGIONS

My 15 most stylish, elegant or graceful batsmen of all time, selected in my order of merit. This is my list of the batsmen I consider to have taken the beauty of batting to it’s ultimate zenith. I am not analysing the best batsman statistically or the most technically correct, mercurial or entertaining. My criterion is the extent of grace or elegance exuded when batting.

1. Frank Worrell-

Resembled a violinist when batting with his strokes reminiscent of the notes of a flute. Very prolific statistically, staggering tons of runs, but never at the cost of his golden touch. His 197 n.o at Trent Bridge and 261 at Old Trafford were the equivalent of monuments to the game .Frank would pierce the most impregnable gaps like the classic movement of ballad dancer. Classical technique, able to adapt in any conditions. Even when pulverising bowlers, respected a cricket ball with the grace of a priest bowing before a pulpit.

2. Zaheer Abbas-

Bisected the field in the manner of a surgeon dissecting a wound with geometric precision. Simply magical timing, bringing his bat down at the very last moment when the ball looked like crashing through his gate. In executing the same stroke he would move forwards and backwards. Had an appetite for big scores like no right handed batting stylist, but at no moment lost his glorious touch. Zaheer Abbas reminded one of painter making curves on a board with his shots looking like the mere touches of painter's brush. Few batsmen held bat at such classical angles and none better executed the dive on either side of extra cover. No batsman ever looked more like a manifestation of the divine.

3. David Gower-

Rarely has any one batted with such effortless ease or caressed the ball in the manner of a mother putting a child to sleep than David Gower. The most lethal pace attacks would be taken to the sword by Gower but never at the cost of divine grace. Even when hooking and pulling with utmost contempt, Gower exuded a silken touch. I can't forget the remorseless ease with which he flayed great pace bowlers with majestic grace. His footwork was lazy and his technique loose, but still opponents prized his wicket as much as any batsman. Exuded grace in simply mythical proportions.

4. Mohammad Azharuddin-

Not classically correct and possessed lazy footwork like Gower .However still took artistry to dimensions rarely explored, with his almost mythical leg glance. When scoring his 121 at Lords in 1990 and 158 at Old Trafford exuded grace of simply heavenly proportions, virtually never seen in England by an overseas batsman. In full flow Azhar was simply poetry in motion. Although at times circumspect against pace ,he played some of the finest innings against challenging pace attacks of Australia and South Africa. He could also look majestic when driving and cutting ,with his sheer touches mesmerising the best of bowlers. In many ways re-defined the oriental batting artistry.

5. Denis Compton-

No batsman looked more like a circus acrobat when batting as Compton who displayed the inventiveness of a magician .Although unorthodox, he challenged great bowlers better than any contemporary batsman, averaging over 50.One can’t forget how he literally danced down the track to punish bowlers and his magical lofted sweep. Explored regions in batting that were surreal.

6. Ranjitsinghji-

Equivalent of a prophet or a musical composer of the game Gave batting virtually a new dimension, introducing the late cut and leg glance, as well as the art of back-foot defence. One of the finest batsmen of all time.

7. Gundappa Vishwanath-

Took artistry to simply surreal dimensions. Vishwanath's strokes reminded you a lotus blooming in full His square and late cut and combined hook, pull and flick stroke had touches of a work of Michelangelo. Even when upto the challenge against the most lethal short-pitched bowling or wicket with uneven bounce, He was as majestic as ever. When scoring an unbeaten 97 at Madras against West Indies in 1974-75 and 124 against them in 1978-79 in the same ground, he bisected a field in the manner few ever did. Above all championed a crisis like very few of his era.

8. Ted Dexter-

Brought back memories of the Golden age of English cricket. Treated the best West Indies and Australian bowlers with contempt which no batsmen did in his era, but still exuded majestic grace. Overshadowed even likes of Peter May and Colin Cowdrey. Few batsmen ever drove pace bowling more majestically.

9. Greg Chappell-

Batted with characteristic English touch taking perfection to sublime proportions. Ultimate epitome of technical perfection with absolute mastery in the 'V.' Best exponent of the flicked on drive.

10. Mark Waugh-

Absolutely classical or majestic on the onside, with almost feline touch. When pitted against the finest pace bowlers and the hardest pitches, would come out on top. Exuded grace more than any Australian batsman in the last 3 decades. Can never forget his classical 124 at Durban in the 2nd test in 1997, on a wearing pitch, to win a game. Also mastered the turning tracks in India.

11. Brian Lara

-Flawed genius who on his day could sit with the Gods of Olympus. Mercurial with the intensity of a thunderstorm, but never at the cost of god gifted grace. The sublime beauty in his batting, gave vibrations of 'Lara's theme in Dr.Zhivago. ‘I can never forget his whip shot or drive through the covers. No left -handed looked more like a musical composer when batting, who took inventiveness to mythical regions. Even when craving his most mammoth scores of over 300,or double centuries ,revealed a poetic touch.

12. Mahela Jayewardene -

Difficult to describe the sheer sweetness sin his strokes .Even when tearing an attack apart, exuded the vibration s of a flute player. In the age of commercialism re-introduced poetic grace to the game.

13.Damyn Marten-

Elegance personified who even in the age of agression treated a cricket ball with the respect of a priest bowing before a pulpit. When cricket had virtually been reduced to playing like machines.Damyn re brought the poetry of the game.

14.VVS Laxman

-In many ways like another form of Gundappa Vishwanath .Not so technically perfect, but classical in adjusting the bat angles to punish even the best of deliveries.Glided the ball with more pwroess than almost every batsmen of his day.

15.Martin Crowe-

In full flow an epitome of batting perfection ,with the movements of ballad dancer performing.Another version of Greg Chappell.

Azhar was surely very pleasing on the eye and I didn't even watch him at his peak. Martyn and Mohammed Yousuf and Lara were right up there as well. Lara I would rate higher. VVS was also very good to watch.

Amongst the current lot, yeah Babar Azam is pretty good to watch.

VVS and Damien Martyn for me.

Babar and Rohit from current era.

Otherwise liked my choice and order?

First tell me which list you're asking.

Kohli whilst obviously a beast and has all the shots etc personally he’s not the most pleasing on the eye , the way he always breaks his wrists etc whilst effective doesn’t look as good as others.

My personal favourite stylish batsman is Saeed Anwar. His strokes were like a piece of art. Could watch him all day.

Someone from the current era, who obviously is not the best batsman of his generation but one of the most aesthetically pleasing on the eye when he times his strokes is Mohammed Hafeez. His straight sixes was lovely to watch. Anyone remember when he opened with Nasir Jamshed against Australia and he hit this amazing straight six against pattinson I think.

There will never a correct answer to this as beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

Ab de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Ben Stokes, Kevin Pietersen & Ricky Ponting

When i think of style and swagger in batting, the first name which pops up in my head has always been Azzu Bhai aka Mohammad Azharuddin , closely followed by Brian Lara but Azzu bhai, call it Indian bias or whatever, but that had some style in his batting.

Let us be clear. Some batsmen have class and some batsmen have swagger and very few batsmen have both.

I will never forget Azzu bhai taking it on against peak Lance Klusner bowling 150 kph.

Playing a cover drive isn't enough. Virat, Babar, Ian Bell none of them are stylish batters. Also it isn't necessary to be stylish. Notice none of Bradman, Tendulkar, Viv Richards have got a mention. They tend to dominate and hammer the opposition bowling.

Ian Bell, Laxman, Martyn, Yousuf, Mahela are stylish - They had femine nature in their batting like a beautiful woman.

Azzu bhai, Lara, Anwar, Yuvraj combined brute force into elegant - Unmatched swagger. They will always be a level above.

Yousuf Youhana was masculine however, but he was also younger.

Zaheer Abbas has to be one of them

Tall, elegant and stylish batsman. So easy on the eye. Sheer timing

When in form no better offside player than him

Could score boundaries with the minimum of effort. Just poetry in motion

Azharuddin later copied his batting style.

When Zaheer and Miandad were at the crease together and they were both in form, Zaheer easily outscored the latter due to his superior timing - also noted by Imran Khan in his book ‘All-round view’

Michael Slater, Virender Sehwag,Brian Lara,Alec Stewart,Sachin Tendulkar,Kevin Pietersen,Ab de Villiers,Ricky Ponting,Nathan Astle,Saeed Anwar.

Kohli extremely stylish when on song. I agree with a lot . i feel Sanga was pretty stylish and should have been in there. Martin Crowe too.

yes, when on song.
Mohd Azharuddin is my favourite simply because of the elegance with which he batted

No left -handed looked more like a musical composer when batting, who took inventiveness to mythical regions. Even when craving his most mammoth scores of over 300,or double centuries ,revealed a poetic touch.

12. Mahela Jayewardene -
Difficult to describe the sheer sweetness in his strokes .Even when tearing an attack apart, exuded the vibration s of a flute player. In the age of commercialism re-introduced poetic grace to the game.

13. Damien Martyn -
Elegance personified who even in the age of aggression treated a cricket ball with the respect of a priest bowing before a pulpit. When cricket had virtually been reduced to playing like machines. Damien re brought the poetry of the game.

14. VVS Laxman -
In many ways like another form of Gundappa Vishwanath .Not so technically perfect, but classical in adjusting the bat angles to punish even the best of deliveries. Glided the ball with more prowess than almost every batsmen of his day.

15. Martin Crowe -
In full flow an epitome of batting perfection ,with the movements of ballad dancer performing. Another version of Greg Chappell.

I have to mention Sachin & Lara of 90s and Ponting of early 2000s. I think very few batsmen in the history of the game were as much attractive as these three were in their pomp. Sachin of 90's is to me the greatest batsmen to have played the game after bradman.

Sachin and Ponting attractive?I agree on Lara .Noone here likes David Gower? What about Aravinda De Silva?

When i think of style and swagger in batting, the first name which pops up in my head has always been Azzu Bhai aka Mohammad Azharuddin , closely followed by Brian Lara but Azzu bhai, call it Indian bias or whatever, but that had some style in his batting.

Let us be clear. Some batsmen have class and some batsmen have swagger and very few batsmen have both.

I will never forget Azzu bhai taking it on against peak Lance Klusner bowling 150 kph.

Great post. What about Zaheer Abbas? Not as stylish as Azhar? or Gower?Eversaw clips of Frank Worrell?

Zaheer Abbas has to be one of them

Tall, elegant and stylish batsman. So easy on the eye. Sheer timing

When in form no better offside player than him

Could score boundaries with the minimum of effort. Just poetry in motion

Azharuddin later copied his batting style.

When Zaheer and Miandad were at the crease together and they were both in form, Zaheer easily outscored the latter due to his superior timing - also noted by Imran Khan in his book ‘All-round view’

Any view of my 2nd list and rankings?

I had no idea you had 2 lists, great stuff! I can't argue with it too much although there should still be room for Yusuf, and maybe even Kohli or Williamson. But hey you put in the effort and there is clearly a lot of research gone into it.

People who are bringing up Sachin, Sangakkara, Kohli. Their batting style is like David Beckham going to the Wimbledon wearing Ralph Lauren blazer. Simplicity and Class is forever

Azzu bhai & Lara's batting style is like Hrithik Roshan turning up to dance for the Ghungroo song. Mahaul hi alag hae :yk

Just watching Babar Azam bat in the ongoing T20 game v England has again highlighted to me why this format is not “proper” cricket.

As graceful and stylish as a batsman Babar Azam is, just look at the forced and inelegant strokes he’s ended up playing here just to keep the scoring rate up - he’s clearly adapting himself to the demands of the game and doing a ‘successful’ job here but it’s just like asking an actor of Marlon Brando or Robert De Niro’s calibre to go and play the action packed role of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2 with a machine gun and explosions going off every few minutes - not exactly doing justice to their talents.

I’m just glad we didn’t have to see stroke players like Mohammed Yusuf , Brian Lara or Mark Waugh playing these forced and unnaturally aggressive strokes.

Good list.

I would Majid Khan and Viv too

VIv was not just about power. He looked very regal at the crease

And when it comes to grace and style (among Pak batsmen) Zaheer Abbas and Majid Khan top the list hands down in my book ....above MoYo Saeed Anwar and every body-else

lease see my abridged or latest list considering all eras and give feedback.

11. Brian Lara
Flawed genius who on his day could sit with the Gods of Olympus. Mercurial with the intensity of a thunderstorm, but never at the cost of god gifted grace. The sublime beauty in his batting, gave vibrations of 'Lara's theme in Dr.Zhivago. ‘I can never forget his whip shot or drive through the covers.
