So, PPers in NYC, I'm relocating to the city for work. Will be working in midtown Manhattan. What's the best way to look for a 1-BR apartment? A broker or third-party websites?

I'm considering Astoria, LIC, and Upper East Side. Is Astoria good for families? I'm looking for a very safe and relatively quiet neighborhood.

Thanks!

depends on how much time you have

if youve got 3 months or more, you can shop around and check places out via calling buildings or through craiglist ads

otherwise for nyc esp manhattan brokers are the way to go

my bad i thought you're looking for manhattan

sorry dont know much abt living in queens but its nyc man. a few google searches should be enough

As Slog mentioned, if you have time at your disposal there are lots of no broker fee rentals posted on Craigslist, Streeteasy, Zillow etc. Else go for a broker.

A tip - Make sure you carry all necessary documents (company intro letter, bank checks) on you when you go apartment hunting - you like something, go for it immediately.

If you don't mind me asking where are you moving from and what do you do?

I am also considering a move to NYC within the next year or so.
