What's new

MS Dhoni is an ATG ODI player but is now fast becoming a burden for India

Batting on 28 off 45 balls at a SR of 60 while req run rate has crossed 14.

I fully expect him to make up for his poor SR, and end up scoring a 50 or 75 at 100 SR giving us a respectable loss.

People can then hail him as a lone warrior.

This guy is hopeless and shameless. It's simply the truth.

The only thing that is going in his favour at the moment is that he's still an excellent keeper and vice captain type figure but if we go on his batting alone, specifically overseas, then he shouldn't be in the team at all. Not at his age and not with the next WC being in England.

India better hope that one of Rohit/Dhawan/Kohli/Rahul hit a big century every match. If they all fail, then MSD is not going to bail us out.

MSD, pls retire. He is dragging is reputation through Dharavi rail tracks at 6 AM.

I quit captaincy because Virat Kohli needed time to groom World Cup team: MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni has said that he quit India‘s ODI and T20I captaincy in early 2017 to allow the incumbent Virat Kohli ample time to shape a squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Dhoni gave up the limited-overs captaincy in January 2017, just days before the start of a home series with England, having nine months earlier stated that he was determined to play until the World Cup in England. It marked the end of a tremendous leadership role, during which time Dhoni led India to the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Speaking at an event in Ranchi on Thursday, Dhoni, 37, said of his decision to hand over the reins to Kohli: “I resigned from captaincy because I wanted the new captain to get enough time for preparing a team before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Selecting a strong team without giving the new captain appropriate time isn’t possible. I believe that I left the captaincy at the right time.”

Dhoni holds the record for most dismissals by an Indian in ODI cricket and T20I cricket, and is the most capped international play across formats ever. He remains an integral part of India’s ODI and T20I teams and will next be seen in action in October when India host West Indies.

Zaheer Khan wants MS Dhoni to bat at No.4 in ODIs

The answer to India’s long-standing problem at No.4 in the one-day international batting order is MS Dhoni, according to Zaheer Khan, the former India paceman.

India have tried any number of options for the crucial batting position, and though Dhoni has batted at two-drop before, he has been seen more as a finisher.

A batting average of 50.99 and strike rate of 88.10 from 322 ODIs marks out Dhoni, who led India to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 title, as one of the modern-day greats, but he hasn’t been in his usual supreme touch of late.

In his most recent ODI outings, he scored 37 from 59 balls and 42 from 66 balls in England – India lost both games. And then, on Tuesday, 18 September against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup, the 37-year-old scored a three-ball duck from No.5.

But Khan, who was an important part of the team Dhoni led, the left-arm paceman very much a part of the think tank and often referred to as the bowling captain, feels there’s a future for Dhoni higher up the order.

“At No. 4, I do feel someone like MS Dhoni needs to give a go ahead because keeping the World Cup in mind, it's a very crucial position to soak in pressure and play according to the situation,” Khan was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

His batting has deteriorated so much however his keeping and captaining (lets face it when Kohli fields in his deep Dhoni is pretty much the captain again) is still very decent.

Dhoni please retire. Dinesh Karthik and Pant or for god sake any new keeper are better batsman.
Even KL Rahul or Kedar Jadhav or Rayadu can keep wickets in ODI.
And they on present form are better fit in indian team.
Dhoni was great player but not anymore.

:)))

Thank God India lost or this guy would have claimed credit for even this.

He keeps getting better and better with age.

His average has gone a little up after yesterday’s innings so his fans can come and defend him better!

Cant believe this guy buried Sehwag and Gambhir's career unceremoniously citing age and reflexes. It is disappointing Sehwag never got to play his well deserved farewell match. Dhoni is a shrewd and cunning sort of guy. I would never like to be friend with a guy like him.

As usual, Dhoni haters went undercover and will come alive only when he doesn't score runs! Dhoni is not the burden for Team India, it's the Pandyas, Rahuls, Pants, Rayudus & Dhawans who are so terribly inconsistent and these are the ones that's going to cost India the WC! Dhoni's presence in the middle is invaluable and that's what Jadhav told during the post-match presentation too! He knows about Dhoni better than all these keyboard pandits!

Chasing 240 in an ODI is not enough to expose his vulnerabilities.

Not sure how many of these types of regulation chases we will get during the cup.

Dhoni is still good enough to chase down low scores. But when the pressure is on him to up the scoring , he seems to be exposed 9 times out of 10 these days.

Nobody is denying his mental toughness. He is the best in that business. But like posters above mentioned, these 90s type chases will be few and far between. He will be a burden batting first and chasing big scores.

MS Dhoni hits Umesh Yadav for 111 metre six

One of the biggest sixes he's hit.

Cleared the roof.

Hit it under pressure situation. What a remarkable hit!

I happened to tune in for the last 15 mins of this match. That was a MONSTER hit, absolutely massive.

MS Dhoni has still got it, this innings was top class.

He’s been playing well in the IPL but IPL bowling isn’t the same standard as ODI bowling.

Today most of Dhoni’s runs came against Umesh and Saini.

Against Rajasthan earlier in the season he smashed Kulkarni and Unadkat all over the park.

Against buffet bowling Dhoni is still a force to be reckoned with.

Against top international bowlers can he do the same?

God I’ve missed Dhoni hit the ball like that. I’ve always felt Dhoni is one man who hit bigger sixes then afridi.

This.

IPL and international cricket are different things. Dhoni has shown signs of improvement in latest two series. But he still needs to bat at higher tempo and with more perpose.

It still takes skill to hit buffet bowling the way Dhoni does.. he is still Miles’s ahead of some other hitters in the world and still number one option for India.

This is how people get carried away! Even I am admirer of his contribution to Indian Cricket (especially as a player - WK Batsman, more than Captain!) Prior to him we had awful set of wicket-keepers whom I could never rely upon! Really I was watching cricket right from Kiran More times, Mongia, etc. They were all good at wicket-keeping, but never really gave much hope with the batting! After we saw other teams develop high quality Wicket-keeper Batsmen like Gilchrist (even SL had Kaluvitharana!) we were looking at someone like Dravid to keep wickets, so I was always envious about all these! Dhoni changed that dimension in Indian Cricket and set such a huge benchmark in that department (Some consider him better than Gilchrist especially because he contributed as "Captain" too and the finisher role which we lacked because we always had good top order, so Gilchrist type <opener> was not needed for us! Anyways I would have been happier even if we got 25% of Gilchrist, such awful was our position! But Dhoni gave us more than what we expected!)

But having said that the time probably came when this standard should have improved further (That's actually the reason why you set some standard... To improve it isn't it? Then what's the use of setting it? That's why we are seeing so many wicket-keepers taking batting seriously!) instead of leaching on this glory! Gilchrist, Boucher... they never did that, never stayed past their prime! (Considered the team's composition & interest more important than their personal career!)

What Dhoni is doing in IPL is making the best out of the loopholes! He is hitting Umesh Yadav who is probably fourth or fifth choice bowler in Indian LOI team who cannot make it to the main side! IPL is definitely club cricket where players are of different qualities and you cannot expect it to be absolute international cricket (that is not IPL's intention also! It is about bringing out the best from average/budding players and helping them get exposed to international level and Yes it is also about making money which I won't deny!)

Most Top International teams (barring probably lower ranked teams) will have bowlers of the caliber of Bumrah, Rabada, Steyn, etc. Dhoni in his prime could have probably handled these bowlers! Dhoni smacking bowlers in IPL is definitely because of all his experience of playing under different conditions and situations! It is good for IPL level... Yes Pant & co. cannot do even this at the moment (smacking IPL bowlers with calculative aggression) but if you groom them properly they are the ones who are capable of taking on the A-Grade international bowlers which people should understand!

Old man Dhoni can only hit those he’s faced a lot in the nets before.

Shameful cricketer that can’t hit anything faster than Marcus Stoinis anymore in international cricket

Yes Dale Steyn is Marcus Stoinis.

'There is no other cricketer who has served India so well as Dhoni' - Kapil Dev

Former India captain Kapil Dev lavished praise on MS Dhoni calling him the greatest servant of Indian cricket and hopes he can win the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 for the country.

Dhoni has been terrific form of late, and recently smashed a 48-ball 84* in Chennai Super Kings' last-ball thriller against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, his highest score in the competition. Not only has his IPL form been spectacular, his exploits in one-day internationals this year have been praise-worthy as well. In the nine ODIs he has played this year, he has scored 327 runs at an average of 81.75, including three back-to-back half-centuries in Australia in January.

Kapil lauded Dhoni's efforts and believes the wicket-keeper batsman is the biggest contributor in Indian cricket's illustrious history. "No one knows how long he wants to play and how long his body can continue to take the workload. But there is no other cricketer who has served the country so well as Dhoni," Kapil told IANS. "We should respect him and wish him good luck. I hope that he wins this World Cup too."

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain further added that he has faith in Dhoni's abilities and the veteran gloveman deserves all the respect that has come his way. "I don't have to say anything [more] about Dhoni. I think he has served the country very well and we must respect him."

Kapil also spoke about India's chances at the World Cup and believes the team can do well at the tournament if they have no injuries along the way. "This Indian team looks very good. However, it won't be very easy. They have to play like a team. I hope that they will have no injuries. If they have a stroke of luck, they will definitely win."

The cricketer-turned-expert was asked about Rishabh Pant's exclusion from the World Cup squad. Pant was dropped in favour of the more experienced Dinesh Karthik. However, Kapil urged to show faith in the selectors' judgement.

"The selectors have done their job. Let's respect the team. They have picked Karthik over Pant, then it's alright. We should just believe that the selectors have done a good job."

India start their World Cup campaign on 5 June in Southampton against South Africa.

He has rolled back the years since the IPL. Probably in his best batting form since 2010-12, and it will be a fitting conclusion to a remarkable career if he can produce some fireworks in the World Cup.

His footwork, decision-making, confidence and everything else is looking very good at the moment. A testament to his mental strength and resilience. Not many players have the capacity to produce a purple patch at this stage of their careers after so much criticism for not retiring with dignity.

Fingers crossed with Dhoni's form.

If he brings his old form just one last time in this world cup, India will do great.

No one can match his pressure absorbing ability.

IPL seems to have got back Dhoni and Rahul in form. Good for India eh.

Class player! Can’t understand why he get’s so much hate from Indian posters. They have no replacement ready for him.

But for Pakistan’s sake I hope he has already produced his best against BD today.

He doesn't have the ability to clear boundaries at will anymore. Poor guy will get called all names. Why Dhoni didn't you just retire ? You don't deserve all these name calling.

Dhoni played well today but he was hiding behind Pandya, was a cowardice act.. he should've come after 5/3 coz he's the only one who can play long innings from the remaining ones....

Dhoni tried his level best, that six of Ferguson. Man what a shot and then he was going for the win but that Guptil throw kicked India out of semis. Dhoni doesn't deserve criticism for this match, Kohli should have played sensibly. Rayudu is miles better than Karthik and Pant, guy should come out of retirement. :shafiq2

Even his mum and dad have had enough.

20 an over needed and dhoni taking singles - 9 off 12 balls so far

Du Plessis playing a lone hand from other end

Speaking at end of the match:

"I haven't batted for a long time. 14-day quarantine doesn't help (why he isn't batting higher)."

Dhoni fans will say he scored at strike rate of 175.

This is why a scorecard doesnt tell the whole story

He basically wasted any chance chennai had of winning and then hit out when the game was long gone

Surely he should either play domestic cricket or other t20 leagues if he wants to keep playing IPL. No one can sustain playing professional cricket for only 6 weeks a year.

Dhoni has become such a burden on every team he plays in nowadays , needs to up his game.

Dhoni needs to reinvent his batting philosophy. Getting "settled" and going big in T20s is already a dubious approach, combined with a batting decline it is almost always a failing approach. Considering his batting decline, Dhoni should try to become an aggressive opener(opening is the easiest job in T20s), the gap is there for CSK as well, because it's hard to find a worse T20 opener than Murali Vijay. Unfortunately, he won't let go of a batting philosophy that worked so well for him in the past

If he wants to play himself in, he should come in earlier. Those 6s at the end were pointless. He is finished as a player but if he is going to play for CSK, he needs to use himself better.

Looking like a boxer who's had one fight too many.

He can't.. He struggles to hit out pace bowlers and leg spinners.. can hit medium pacers easily..

Saj Its the fact he doesnt try when he needs to Maybe it is the fact hes aged and that his reflexes have slowed and he ll get out if he tries

For someone known as a great chaser and finisher he just doesnt calculate or finish well at all anymore Theres zero intent in his innings Its baffling

Pathetic Dhoni is years above his given age and should’ve retired after flopping so badly for over 5 years now.

Thank goodness, he has at least retired from international cricket and spared Indian fans from his useless tuk tuk.

Pathetic selfish batting by him, wasn't the first time, won't be the last either.

Sunny was calling Dhoni a far more famous cricketer than even Tendulkar.

To quote him,

"Speaking about Dhoni before the IPL opener, Gavaskar said, “Since MSD comes from Ranchi, which doesn't have a cricket culture as such, the whole India loves him. Tendulkar has Mumbai and Kolkata, Kohli has Delhi and Bengaluru but when you talk of Dhoni it's whole India."

Poor logic and was not expected from someone as senior and learned as Sunny is. And he should know it better than almost everyone that Tendulkar's popularity transcends state and even national boundaries.

Dhoni isn't even a patch on Tendulkar in both popularity and cricketing ability wise. Kudos to him that he was still able to maximize the talent he had.

Should’ve retired after the 2015 World Cup
Correction: Should've been forced to retire or dropped from the national team. He was a burden even before WC '15 but surely that WC should've been the end of him.

Yet the movie on dhoni was a superhit and hardly anyone bothered to watch the movie on sachin. dhoni is more popular than sachin (despite being less talented) and only someone who has no idea about ground reality in india will say sachin is more popular.

He's been doing this for years. Gambhir called him out in 2012.
Gambhir calling him out again,

"I was a bit surprised, to be honest. MS Dhoni batting at No. 7? And sending Gaikwad before him, Sam Curran before him. Makes no sense to me. In fact, you should be leading from the front. And this is not what you call leading from the front. Batting at number seven when you're chasing what 217? The game was over. Faf (du Plessis) was probably the lone warrior," ESPNCricinfo quoted Gambhir as saying.

"Yes, you can talk about MS Dhoni's last over when he hit three sixes, but it was of no use, to be honest. It was just all personal runs. See, if someone else would have done this, some other captain had batted number seven, he would have got a lot of flak. It is MS Dhoni - probably why people don't talk about it. When you don't have Suresh Raina, you're making people believe that Sam Curran is better than you. You're making people believe that Ruturaj Gaikwad, Curran, Kedar Jadhav, Faf du Plessis, M Vijay, all these guys, are better than you," he added.

Dhoni found going a little tough initially as he was able to score just nine runs off his first twelve balls, but in the final over as CSK needed 38 to win, Dhoni was able to smash 20 runs, including three sixes.

"There is nothing wrong if you end up getting out early, at least start leading from the front, trying to inspire the team as well. What you did in the last over, probably if you'd done that coming in at No. 4 or 5, alongside Faf, you could have made a game out of it. But probably there was no such intent to make a game out of it," said Gambhir.

"I thought that after the first six overs, they had literally given up on the game. And probably MS was trying to get back into that match rhythm of batting till the end and get some runs under his belt so he can actually play these kind of innings in the coming games. You've got to be in the present, try and win each game possible. I thought there was no intent to win the game and they were never there in the chase. You can talk about Faf's innings, but Faf initially was struggling big time. So I thought it was an absolute miscalculation, probably not the right captaincy as well. This is not how you ask someone like MS to lead the side," he added.

Well said, Gambhir. Don't agree with him on most issues but here he is spot on. Dhoni has bluffed his way to all the moolah over last 5-odd years with batting approach like this. No wonder that has cost us heavily in 2 consecutive WCs.

Agree. Dhoni didn’t allow us to groom a new wicket keeper.

Because the sachin movie was a documentary, not a movie. Dhoni movie was a bollywood movie with songs, dance, Masada and love story with famous actors. Sachin was a documentary with interviews and old footage.

Who watches documentaries over Bollywood? you will sit and watch lots of interviews and black and white pics Do? Do you watch discovery or other channel? Come you have to come up with a better example than that

I feel Dhoni has the personality for a Bollywood biopic. SRT doesn’t.

Personality doesn't have anything to do with a movie, I feel. Tendulkar's career has far many more twists and turns than Dhoni's.

Just think what if a proper movie had been made on Tendulkar!

I did. But I agree, only die hard fans will watch a documentary made on their idol over a commercially fictionalized masala movie.

Besides Tendulkar is very unlike Dhoni as he guards his privacy very fiercely. Who knows he might have denied permission into his private life to prospective film makers!

Sachin has a boring personality and didnt have a presence except when holding a bat. He was a poor leader. Of course far more superior batsman ( dhoni is a mediocre batsman who overacheaved). but the fact remains that Dhoni is more popular in india, while tendulkar may be more popular in mumbai or his neighbourhood.

True, very selfish of him to not only hog a slot in Indian team way past his usefulness but also not grooming anyone into the role he played for the team with aplomb for more than a decade.

Tendulkar didn't set a good example as a sportsman. Was caught tampering the ball and who will forget the tantrum he threw when he was asked to play by rules and pay the taxes for the his sports car. As a sportsperson, he was always small hearted.

Tendulkar went on playing for his 100 hundred. It was befitting that the hundred he so coveted ended up losing india the match. That will always be tendulkar's legacy, that he played for himself.

Dhoni, despite being less talented, gave india a world cup. Despite being a mediocre batsman, dhoni didn't choke in finals, while tendulkar was a known choker in finals.
