MS Dhoni is an ATG ODI player but is now fast becoming a burden for India

Tendulkar went on playing for his 100 hundred. It was befitting that the hundred he so coveted ended up losing india the match. That will always be tendulkar's legacy, that he played for himself.

Dhoni, despite being less talented, gave india a world cup. Despite being a mediocre batsman, dhoni didn't choke in finals, while tendulkar was a known choker in finals.

What did Dhoni do in test cricket?

What did Dhoni do in test cricket?

Already said dhoni was a mediocre batsman who over achieved, while tendulkar was among the top 5 batsmen of his generation. but dhoni brought more honours to the country than tendulkar, probably that is why he is more popular than tendulkar.

gambhir has always been bitter about dhoni ever since dhoni's world cup knock overshadowed his performance and he didn't get even half of the credit. He should have got more credit, but can't blame people for loving dhoni who they can relate with instead of the bitter and angry gambhir who always had a chip over his shoulder.

Why so serious lol? Has he not taken retirement from international cricket? Who cares about his paid vacation in IPL? :inti

Dhoni himself does. He over the years has taken captaining CSK much more seriously that captaining India. Still remember how angry he was in post match presentation when CSK lost the semi final against Punjab in 2014 as if his life was dependent on it. Same year when Eng was drubbing us in test series, he was saying its all part of process and glad we lost in 3 days because we got an extra rest day. :)))

Kohli on the other hand dont take IPL seriously though and just play for the sake of it. His entire dedication is playing for India.

Well said, Gambhir. Don't agree with him on most issues but here he is spot on. Dhoni has bluffed his way to all the moolah over last 5-odd years with batting approach like this. No wonder that has cost us heavily in 2 consecutive WCs.

Which of them?
His replacement were avg to poor behind the stump.. And Saha is poor with the bat.. Dhoni struggles against pacers and leggies, so nothing surprises he comes late yesterday..

Hate to say this, but you’re right.

Also despite yesterday’s innings, Dhoni has generally shown more intent at the IPL than international T20s where he’s been very mediocre as a batsman.

Personality doesn't have anything to do with a movie, I feel. Tendulkar's career has far many more twists and turns than Dhoni's.

Just think what if a proper movie had been made on Tendulkar!

Bro it’s Bollywood that we are talking about. No one would care about the cricket related twist and turns in SRT’s life. Dhoni’s life has had more masala. And despite being an inferior batsman he had that one epic innings that eclipsed all the ODI knocks SRT has ever played. A MoM performance in a World Cup final. Cannot have a better climax for a sports movie. Cant think of a similar moment for an SRT movie.

Besides Tendulkar is very unlike Dhoni as he guards his privacy very fiercely. Who knows he might have denied permission into his private life to prospective film makers!

Agree that SRT has guarded his private life. Dhoni too had been very private about his life (that’s why people were interested in watching the movie) but opened it all for the money/fame from the movie.

Both of last 2 ODI WCs.

Batting wise, he has been way past it even before WC '15, notwithstanding an innings here or there.

As for his replacements being poor, well they should've got extended run in the team like Dhoni himself did. But Dhoni being Dhoni, hogged the WK slot almost 99% of the times. How do you expect anyone to come good if they hardly get a chance in the national team?

Agree. That’s the biggest gripe I have.

One innings even if it comes in a WC final, doesn't make it greater than any of the iconic innings Tendulkar played which were plenty during his 24-years career.

Also if you mean masala = controversies, then Tendulkar's cricket career had plenty of them, namely

1) His ball tampering controversy in '01 in SA test series when an entire test was deemed unofficial only because Tendulkar was pronounced guilty, unfairly in my opinion.

2) When he applied for tax waiver for his Ferrari,

3) His iconic back and TE injuries,

4) His renaissance post WC '07,

5) His unfortunate runout in Eden Gardens in ATC in '99 and crowd rioting which forced authorities to play the rest of the test match with empty stands,

6) His Hero cup heroics,

7) Controversy over his SBW dismissal off McGrath in Adelaide test,

8) Monkeygate, 'nuf said

9) His stint as RS MP when his low attendance in parliament was critized by all and sundry,

10) Maddening hype behind his 100th 100,

11) Above all, his iconic retirement speech.

So many others as well. As I said, Dhoni's career isn't a patch on Tendulkar as far as contrversies go. Just because Dhoni gave his consent to make a movie on his life and make ample moolah out of it, doesn't make Tendulkar any lesser.

Dhoni lost countless of matches for India in ODIs and T20Is in the last 6 years.
Dhoni didn't score a T20I fifty for 10 years. Yes, 10 freaking years.
Dhoni never scored a century outside Asia. Pant scored 2 in his first year of international cricket.
Dhoni is an excellent keeper against Spinners, but below average against Pacers. Pant is good against Pacers, below average against Spinners. Dhoni was a lot worst in his initial years.

Saha has been a better WK-batsman for India than Dhoni ever was.
Pant would have been a better WK-batsman than Dhoni of recent years in shorter formats had the former got more chances.

Don't say the replacements are poor. Him and Kohli are two biggest reasons why we haven't won a single ICC trophy after 2013 CT.

Fully agree with this though I'll add Yuvraj to it as he was the sole reason why we couldn't win WT20 in '14.

Amazing level of shall we say, hate, for MS D!

The guy has been one of the greatest servants of Indian cricket!

Kohli atleast did well in T20 World Cups and he was the biggest contributer with the bat in CT 2013 final.

Oh please, cut the cr@p. He has got enough chances and he is still getting chances. Compare this to someone like Samson who played only 4 T20's for India and then was discarded. Pant came to bat before Dhoni in the semi final of the last WC too. What did he do then?

There is one thing to criticise Dhoni for his own performances which could be right too but putting the blame on Dhoni for Pant's failure looks nothing more than a desperation. Pathetic fans will always worship the rising sun(could be a new 10W LED bulb too). :inti

You've made some good points. Dhoni's biopic focused more on his love life and struggle. I'm not sure if SRT has similar content for former, but then you're right, he's been very secretive about it.

True, Dhoni's cannot match Tendulkar for the controversies. Tendulkar controveries like lying on monkeygate, avoiding tax payment for ferrari ( he also listed himself as an actor to avoid tax payment from the ads he did), his ball tampering, not attending the parliament, they have only diminished his status and people rightly look at him as a selfish person who was good at batting. Even with his batting, there was a feeling of manhoosiyat.

There was a linkup of him with Shilpa Shirodkar (?) very early in his career but that was just tabloids. But apart from that its been smooth sailing for him on his family front.

As for Dhoni, his linkup with Deepika is known to everyone, any other you can think of? Also do you think the character played by Disha Patani in Dhoni's movie, do you think that was fictional or real?

This is very true. We did unnecessarily carry him for 5-odd years!

It is not the player's fault. It is the selector's job to pick or drop someone based on performance. Those who hate dhoni for continuing to play are barking up the wrong tree. A player always thinks that he can fight and perform, even if the reflexes are waning. It is their second nature.

It's not easy to drop a player of Tendulkar, Imran, Kohli, Sangakkara, Wasim or Dhoni stature in subcontinent. There will be riots if it happens.

Any example of riots when a player was dropped?

It is idiotic to direct your ire against a player for playing but not at the selectors who selected the player. But too much to expect common sense.

*** is this India of 1980s ? Bro this is pathetic. Im sure Pakistanis and Lankans are probably cringing by this comment. All these developments and we are still talking about protests over a player being dropped.

DC 175/3 (20)
CSK 105/4 (16.1) CRR: 6.49 REQ: 18.52
Chennai Super Kings need 71 runs in 23 balls

Team in trouble - MS Dhoni at the crease.

Dhoni is still decent for a keeper batsman. But the hype that commentators give to him is cringeworthy. He is a nudger who can hit the occasional boundary. Not a game changer like Russel or Rohit.

MS Dhoni's batting these days is good for his average but no good for his team.

Call it a day MSD.

He has been like this for more than 5 years now. Pity he, along with Kohli has now sabotaged our dreams during 2 consecutive WCs.

Left the onslaught too late yet again today.

Another not out though which is good for his average I suppose.

Another bad day for Ultimate Superstar A1 Honourable Supreme Leader Head of State Thala Dhoni.

What's hilarious is the commentators (Gavaskar, Pietersen) waxing lyrical about him while he proceeds to lose his team another game.

TV commentary is going the way of TV media these days.

Yeah, Gavaskar says a fully fit Dhoni would have taken CSK home :))

KP was pure cringe. Gavaskar I expected such comments from.

They were praising Dhoni as if he had won the match for CSK.

When dhoni came in the rrr was 9.21 after 6 overs

After 16 overs that had risen to 19.50 an over with dhoni on 24 off 27 balls

I am Chennai fan. Now I can see why Indians got frustrated with him.

He has built an old side and he just doesn't look the same with the bat. Struggles for timing and strike rotation.

CSK need to move on from this Dhoni and Fleming combination. It has done well but all good things come to an end.

How would indian fans rate Dhonis performances in the following tournaments:

CWC 2015
WT20 2016
CT 2017
CWC 2019

What a team of oldies Dhoni has built. Misbah would be proud. Watson, Faf, Raina (who leftt), Rayudu, Tahir, Vijay, Jadeja, Chawla, Jadhav, Bravo, and the master himself. Wow! What a bunch.

And he can't bat either now. Dhoni has really hurt his legacy and if doesn't retire after this tournament, it could end very badly for him.

The only time he really did something good in a tournament was 2011 wc final, but that is easily the greatest match of the last two decades and due to that knock no casual fan remembers his other failures.

Cwc 2015 was the start of dhoni version 2.0
His finishing capabilities started fading and he became indias version of misbah ul haq in t20s. That dreadful innings in semifinals reminded me of misbah.

In wt20 16 he had no performance of not except that run out vs Bangladesh

In ct 17,he was basically a specialist keeper

In 2019,he was absolutely dreadful, worse than misbah.

I have always been one of his biggest fans. But sorry to say that he overstayed his welcome by a long way. He should have retired at least 4 years earlier. Much like how Sachin should have retired after the 2011 World Cup when he was still in red hot form.

Thank heavens he retired before the WT20. Would have been Yuvraj 2014 all over again.

The Javed Miandad of India.

Chennai Super Kings lost their third match in a row in the 13th season of the Indian Premier League. Up against Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK were asked to chase 165 at the Dubai International Stadium. But they could not achieve the feat as they managed to score only 157 runs in their quota of 20 overs. The onus of the result was again put on CSK captain MS Dhoni, who was carrying his team’s hope along with Ravindra Jadeja.

But Dhoni could not manage to take his side home as it looked like that he went after the bowlers too late. Dhoni stayed unbeaten on 47 runs off 36 balls as CSK lost the match by seven runs. Dhoni is one of the fittest cricketers in world cricket despite being 39 years old but on Friday he was also seen struggling in the searing heat in UAE. He talked about the situation after the match, saying that his throat had got dry so he started to cough.

“I tried to get as much as time as possible. It is quite dry out here. So, the throat gets dry and you start to cough. When you have legal signs, you can take some time off.”

His side falling short yet again despite having him at the crease, Dhoni said he was trying to hit the ball too hard when timing the ball was a better option against SRH.

“I was not able to middle a lot of deliveries. Was trying to hit it too hard. When the wicket is slightly at the slower side, it is better to time it. Looking at outfield it was subconsciously coming to us to hit the ball hard,” Dhoni said after his side’s third defeat in four matches.

Dhoni made three changes to his playing XI but could not arrest the slide. He acknowledged they need to find solutions.

“Long time back once we lost three in a row. We need to get a lot of things right. It is the professionalism. We need to take our catches not bowl no-balls. Those are the controllables and may be we are getting too relaxed,” he said.

“We have been a bit too relaxed at times. After the 16th over, we had two good overs but overall we could have been slightly better.”Nobody wants to drop catches but at the same at this level, we need to draw a line and say these catches that need to be taken especially when the team hasn’t been doing that outstandingly well,” he said referring to spilled chances when SRH’s Abhishek Sharma was batting.

“Catches that these can hamper your knock out stage games. It is very important to be at your best. There are plenty of positives in this game but we will try to come back strong.”

What makes it "easely" the greatest match of the last 2 decades? You decided it? That may be your favorite match but no, it isn't the best match of anything. Actually, an India vs SL can't be the greatest match of anything. Especially it that period they used to play each other about 10 times a year.

My comment is no bias against India. Actually India vs Australia and India vs Pakistan in that same world cup were bigger matches.
Beating Australia and ending their decade long reign over world cups was a big achievment so was beating the arch rivals.

Bias will lead you nowhere!

He's past it, it's about CsK fans to decide how long they want him, from what I have seen they are okay with him even if they lose!

Over the past few years Dhoni’s modus operandi more often than not is to come into bat with the req run being 10-12 rpo. He scratches around for a bit by which time the rrr is 16-20. Then once the game is pretty much lost he’ll hit a few 6s and/or 4s and finish with some respectable stats on paper and of course his team have lost. And repeat.

CSK are paying Dhoni almost $300,000 per week for his IPL stint - wonder how much longer they’ll want to do this. Their squad already resembles a dad’s army (Dhoni is 39, Raina 34, Kedar 35, Watson 39, Rayudu 35, Vijay 36, FaF 36, Tahir 41, Harbhajan 40, Bravo 36 etc) so wonder how they’ll go about getting rid of the deadwood?

May be they will scrap and will pick in next year full auction.

he is done. hang it up. should have retired in 2016 itself.

Don't you have enough money any way? like 180 million.

May be they will scrap and will pick in next year full auction.

I think they will keep him for 2 more years as a player/mentor to ease transition of csk from Dhoni-Fleming era. Every good thing comes to an end. Problem is do CSK have a new captain in mind who will do the rebuilding? I am afraid they will become bottom tier team like Punjab. They should take inspiration from Iyer-Ponting combo. They have created a core group of players for DC and now reaping the benefits.

It was real pain to see him bat... Meanwhile Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan grabbing the opportunity to settled scores with him

I noticed CSK won today.

Dhoni wasn't around to slam the brakes on the chase this time.

Other commentary is fine, IPL commentators and their rear kissing of BCCI and all of the players is throwing is cringeworthy. Kevin Peitersen has been a little too critical, he will be removed next year.

I mean it was the most important match of the last two decades for India(should have worded it better) . That's why casual indian fans remember him as some sort of great batsman in knockouts.

Please read the post i am actually saying that he has done nothing of note except that 90 odd in knockouts.

Hes really struggling these days

Looks a shadow of a player he was

How can his fans defend him? It’s been a while that he’s batting like this. The game was in favour of CSK until he arrived and put the brakes as usual.

CSK is unlikely to win from here. Pathetic from Dhoni once again. Tuk tuk master.

His last season as a player probably. Wouldn't be surprised if hangs up his boots midway through the tournament.

Another rubbish innings.

MS Dhoni 11 off 12

His side loses with 5 wickets in hand....

MS Dhoni | CSK (losing) captain: In the middle overs there was a phase where they bowled 2-3 good overs. If we batted better, and didn't lose 2-3 wickets in a row,. We should've been careful in the first 5-6 overs. Curran was really good with the ball, and I think we did well in general with the ball, but the batsmen let the bowlers down today. Rotation of strike was important, but I think there were hardly any boundaries in the final few overs, so we need to be innovative at the end when they are continuously hitting a back of a length. That's where we need to adapt better with the bat and I don't think we did that.

One part is not enough.

You don't need to be a megastar to play a megastar in a movie. Only need to be a good actor and put in a believable performance.

It's getting really embarassing for Dhoni now. He has become the biggest elephant in the room for the commentators and it has gotten awkward out there.

MSD should just retire. Sooner the better. Tomorrow would be best. There's nothing left in the tank, bro.

But it's really difficult to hang up your boots on such a bad note. He's probably harbouring delusions about turning it around and winning one last trophy for CSK. He might still do it, who knows. Highly, highly unlikely though.

Strike rate of 129 so far at the IPL.

It seems he's batting for himself these days and not the team.

These Days = Since 2013.

The man managed to stay in the team despite being a terrible finisher for over 6 years. He is doing the same in IPL now.

He got bowled playing across to a 29 year old off spinner who worked as an architect full-time untill 2 years ago lol. He literally didn't bowl off spin until 26.

Can someone that is good at statsguru pull stats of Dhoni without Yuvraj and Raina ?

Can someone that is good at statsguru pull stats of Dhoni without Yuvraj and Raina ?

ODIs
55@89 with Raina
53@89 with Yuvraj
53@89 with both

45@85 without Raina
48@86 without Yuvraj
42@80 without both

Clearly enjoyed partnering with Raina. But then it coincided with his peak too.

Stats can be misleading though as the thing with Dhoni is that he will play a mediocre innings of 60* (75) on a flat track chasing 320+ and maintain them.

Last time a commentator showed guts and criticized few players, he got fired : Sanjay Manjrekar.
Really. its tiresome to hear english commentary. Tired of commentators falsely hyping players. Its cricket not wwe.
