What's new

MS Dhoni is an ATG ODI player but is now fast becoming a burden for India

Dhoni (56 from 36) and Raina (63 from 45) were the best Indian batsmen today. He was also India's best batsman in the first T20. He still has it.

Actually yuvraj innings was the most clutch as also evident from kohli's post match interview. He said they were looking for 170-180(gotta say poor thinking:facepalm:) odd runs but yuvraj changed that all together in one over.

2 years and counting and still not all fans are on-board.

Today he got out to a delivery which should have been smashed for a sixer.

Arc ball. Right there for the taking.

If he fails in the champions trophy and I think he should be dropped. India can't afford to carry him. In t20s he should definitely be dropped.

MSD has become an embarrassment now. Living off of his reputation and past glory. The guy is no where near the level he was 4 years ago.

Reflexes gone, bat speed gone... All he does is, attempted hoicks go for a single and he aggressively runs for a single. After 3 or 4 singles, he fails miserably to pick up a straight delivery and gets LBW.

He is a hack at the best of his times and right now i don't know what kind of player he is

Time to bring in Saha, the guy can whack the ball when needed and is clutch.

Apparently, he doesn't have a single century outside Asia and terrible averages to go with it. Pretty overrated.

The only batting position at which Dhoni has some utility is #4. Should not bat below that at all!

In his prime years, Dhoni was great to watch lower down the order and a pretty good finisher but his keeping and batting have regressed badly. On top of all that, he looks slow and lethargic...which makes me think of Tendulkar and his last few years for India. I always felt he stayed on too long.

should retire from T20 atleast
ODIs I guess depends on CT

Pant is ready to take over

It's make or break time for Dhoni next month - a poor tournament and surely he'll have to retire or face being dropped. Even his domestic form is nothing to shout home about any more. What a disaster he had today.

It's like watching your favourite heavyweight boxer just fight on and on when it's clear to all they are way past their best.

Curious to know - do Indian fans rate Saha as a better Test player than Dhoni?

I hope Kohli doesn't single handedly carry the team on his shoulders in the CT and save Dhoni n Co.

MSD stopping Pant's progress.

He is clearly over the hill. One of the major culprits in today's loss.

Jacques Kallis "It's better to retire when your fans will be asking you 'why?' instead of waiting until the day when your fans will be asking you "When?"

Many Dhoni fans are now beginning to ask Dhoni "When?"

I have been waiting for his retirement for over an year now. He has become hopeless with the bat.

In T20, I agree with everyone that he has to go and Pant has to inducted. But in ODI, I am not so sure as it comes down to many factors, do we need msd inputs and his tactical brilliance anymore? Is it even sure that if dhoni retired pant will be tried out? What if they give chance to saha as he is already test WK or karthik, I will happily take Dhoni over these two.

Ideal scenerio would be pant making his case so strong that if dhoni retires even selectors can't think of anybody before Pant.

With such a poor technique, Dhoni, the batsman, was always going to get humiliated in his twilight years.

Dhoni should do the right thing and retire after CT. There is no way he should be playing in the next World Cup.

I can just laugh at this thread now that again it is bumped! This only shows that it is not about criticizing Dhoni or calling for his exit, but it is about what you expect from the man! You actually don't want his exit, you want him in the team & perform with full-blaze! How on earth he is responsible for this loss? (totally/solely himself? I agree he was also part of the team which lost) He was not batting till the last ball & wasted balls & solely responsible (as Yuvaraj did in a T20 finals match). For that matter no single player from RPS was actually responsible for this defeat, they tried hard but they couldn't go far the line (and Mumbai did well!) Will you say that Smith was responsible for this who played almost run a ball innings and got out at critical stage? I can just think what would have people felt if Dhoni had played such similar knock instead of Smith! Dhoni is definitely capable of still playing such knocks! He would have got criticized even more than what he is getting now! Smith is at the prime of his career, and hence people see things differently & guys like Dhoni are treated like scapegoats!

People have conveniently ignored what Dhoni did when Mumbai (who have a powerful-long batting lineup) was restricted to small score on a big final. His inputs, his guidance, his advice (field placement for Pollard). The problem is you are expecting him to play like he did in his prime, continue to do all the magical stuffs! I am sure even if RPS had won yesterday these people would have criticized Dhoni for not doing his part! But just remember RPS did much better than previous year and Dhoni played some part in this (if not big part!) Don't expect Dhoni to do the main job anymore, he will just do the supporting role (Just like Amitabh has become supporting actor in films even though his name appears first in the title card :)) ) Use him judicially just like yesterday, ask him to bat at No.4, not much harm will be done if others do their job properly... Don't make him a scapegoat for others failures (who are supposed to perform now like how Dhoni performed in his prime!) Even Indian ODI team has a vacancy at No.4 spot at the moment! Its not that Indian team is oozing with talent. Use him there, utilize his experience, his almost flawless wicket-keeping! Don't kill the spirit of talented Rishab Pant by putting unnecessary pressure of "replacing Dhoni", Let him make way in the team once Dhoni exits on his wish & when he decides gradually (I am sure Dhoni will stay out of Indian T20 team making way for Pant)! And don't put India back to the disastrous era of imbalanced team with hacks like Nayan Mongia playing ODI or even Dravid forced to keep wickets! Look at the backup guy chosen for CT (Dinesh Kartik- the pain in the a** guy whom every Indian Cricket fan is aware right since 80s!)

Hear Hear!!!Long live dhoni Pathetic display by some Indian posters maligning the one of the biggest matchwinners indian cricket has ever seen or will ever see

DHONI183 what are your views on MSD and his current form?

MS had been one of the very rare ODI batsmen who hadn´t gone a lean year or a half in his career (barring bad series here or there), so that itself deserves respect. I´ll however be the first one to admit that his run-scoring in the last two-three hasn´t been up to the standards set by him, despite scratching a good innings in between every now and then. The power-hitting ability is clearly not what it used to be, so I´m aware of all that.

However, we also need to keep in mind the example of someone like Tendulkar and the way he lengthened his career beyonds imagination. Don´t forget that fans and critics literally demanded his retirement following the failures in 2004-05, and then came the nightmare exit from World Cup 2007. I don´t think it needs a reminder how he fared the next four years and how for a crucial role he played in India winning the 2011 World Cup. Who knows what MS´ plans are and in what ambitions he´s actually given up the captaincy? Never say never. But of course, runs will have to follow. It´s the national team after all and the demand for performance is justified.

However, discussing this now, when he´s scored a century in his second last ODI innings and made 357 runs in his last eight ODI innings, is unfair and harsh. Before that, fair enough it was a question as to whether how long India can wait with him, but he has shown signs of some improvements. I think, for things to work well, we too as fans have to tone down the expectations a bit. It may well be that he indeed regains some of his lost touch, but him chasing 15 in the last over with just a wicket in hand may never happen again. So if he bats well two or three of times in the Champions Trophy and scores runs but doesn´t stay long enough to finish the innings, then I´m afraid we might´ve to make peace with that. Similarly, if the question about his place in the team has come in the wake of a not-so-great IPL, then that too is unfair. You do not drop a player based on bad performance in the IPL if he was doing alright the last time he played in the Indian team.

And no, I´m not going to hide behind the insight and the captaincy advises he offers to Kohli (as pleasing as it is to see that mind you). A player is picked to perform in his role. But I´m sitting miles away and I´m not Kohli. If Kohli decides that he still needs MS´ batting services, all good; if he thinks MS doesn´t fit into his vision and isn´t performing, so be it. I´m not going to hold grudges against him, like fans of certain players do against MS for the dropping of their favourite players. MS and his team proved the decision to move on as right, and Kohli too deserves his space to build a team of his trust. Trying and failing is never a problem, not trying at all is. Having a vision that doesn´t get fulfilled isn´t an issue, but not having any is. When MS took over, he brought a new vision to India´s limited-overs team and that´ll remain his legacy for the years to come.

Teams exploit the wide yorker as a ploy to quieten MS in the slog overs, and it was done in the IPL too, but I think he can overcome that. He´ll manage to squeeze out a boundary or two from them - as he did against Bhuvneshwar in a game when he rocketed one for a thumping six over cover - but it´s the delivery bowled at the hip height that I consider to be a matter of concern. He slogged them out of his sight against Mumbai in a play-off, but I´m not sure power alone can be a solution. He´ll need to come up with a plan for those ones for the Champions Trophy next month. He plays them alright mind you if he´s batting under normal circumstances, by nudging them to fine-leg, but can´t quite get his bat behind them if he needs to go for the big hits.

Every great thing comes with an expiry date and time has finally come for Dhoni to step down.

And we are taking Dhoni to 2019 WC.

We have to realise that he's finished, before it's too late.

Will MS Dhoni leave ODI cricket a shell of his former self in 2019 just like Javed Miandad in 1996?

i have the utmost respect for what MSD has achieved in his career an ODI ATG. A clutch bat.

But sadly his time at the International Level seems to be drawing to a close. He clearly isnt the same Dhoni of a few years ago.

I have a feeling he will carry on 2 years and then go out in a disgrace in 2019 just like Miandad in 96 WC.

Almost won the game for India but HE'S the liability. Like forcing him to quit captaincy wasn't enough, now you want the player gone too. Yep, you guys deserve being demolished by Pakistan in finals.

Let's hope not, should retire before 2019 WC and give chance to a youngster than further ruining his legacy.

Losing to pakistan was just law of averages.Just like we lose to bangladesh now and then.Trashing pakistan will resume as soon as we meet next.

Don't think so. Pakistan has the better record and I can only see it growing under the captaincy of Sarfraz. Sorry to pop your bubble though. Hope I didn't hurt your feelings.

So reminiscent of Misbah-bashing of Pakistani fans. India and Pakistan are more alike than we think :afridi

So why does Indian have a inferior win/loss record against Pakistan if normal service is thrashing Pakistan?

I really like Dhoni - he certainly is a great player and captain - but his innings today was shameful, and not for the first time in recent years.

he is ruining his legacy.
he plays for himself rather than team
and pads up his stats.

I wish Yuvraj and Dhoni should remain in the Indian team until WC19. If possible bring back Raina and Karthik as well. In the bowling bring back Ishant, Aaron, Dinda and Vinay Kumar. Every match that India will play would be a delight :)

Shouldnt have forced him to leave captaincy. Far better captain than Virat.

There comes a time even with great captains when they run out of ideas and pass on the mantel to the next generation.

Dhoni as Captain achieved whatever a Captain would dream for. That's where it all Ends.

His performances in last 2 years have dipped. He is only 33-34 but He has played as much Cricket as a 42 years Old would have played until 2005 and that too mostly as a Captain. Captaincy takea huge toll on your mind and body especially when you lead a team like India, 1.311 billion population.

DHONI is undoubtedly as ATG Test Captain, ATG ODI Captain, ATG ODI Wk Batsman but his time is up. He needs to retire immediately. India has couple of fantastic young WK Batsmen and its time for them to emulate young Dhoni.

Dhoni needs to retire from all forms of International Cricket.

Dhoni has taken away the dot ball crown from Misbah..I mean common...100 plus balls for a fifty in these conditions against this bowling attack..its a joke!

agree on Dhoni..but who are the couple of fantastic young WK Batsmen that India has in store?

I hope you are not referring to Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik..

oh I see. I have seen this guy Pant bat in the IPL. He surely looks a good T20 dasher. Whether he can convert those displays in the international arena against quality bowlers, time will tell.

Not just T20.

FC average of 69 after 11 FC matches. Tripple Century in FC already and he is 19-20 only.

Time for Dhoni to hang his boots without any doubt whatsoever.

OK. the question is that when you and me can see it now, why can Dhoni not see it? surely Dhoni is a wise and (rich) man, strange that he is hanging on the spot..

Pathetic to see Dhoni fans defending his last inning on social media. They are coming up with things like 2 x WC Winner, Great Batsman, bla bla. Yeah, that's true but right now we are talking about current inning which you played against West Indies. Don't bring out the past achievements. Talk about the last match and how he has played. Wicket might be sticky and conditions must have been tough but getting run a ball 18 runs with 4 wickets in hand with so called best finished in the world, common criticism to banta hay thora

Some Indian fans start idolizing cricketers and start catching genuine attraction towards cricketers, there are many fan pages dedicated to Virat and Dhoni.

Dhoni ODI average in 2017 - 60.62 with strike rate of 85.
Don't know what a lower order bat has to do.
Still among the best keepers.
Acts as 2nd leader and guide to bowlers.
Only experienced player in lower order in case of collapse, after top 3 all the rest hacks.

Good point about his keeping and him acting as second leader (he’s always talking and guiding the bowlers and when Kohli moves to the boundary in the latter overs Dhoni basically plays the role of captain). And if the next WC was in Asia I’d have no problems with him playing on but I really can’t see Dhoni performing with the bat in England at the age of 37/38. He hasn’t played a match defining T20 or ODI knock outside Asia for a long time.

And you think 34 yr old dinesh kartik or young hacker Risabh pant will do better? There are no alternatives.Dhoni averages 60..what more can he do?We need him, until he starts to fail badly.

Yep the selectors have (deliberately?) left the team with no other viable option. Instead of selecting and grooming a young wicketkeeper batsman after the last WC they’ve persisted with the likes of Karthik and Parthiv.

It will be interesting to see how Dhoni does in England next year where he’ll have 3 x odis and 3 x t20Is to show us what he can still achieve batting in England. And of course before that there’s 6 x odis and 3 x t20Is in South Africa. There are also 5 odis in NZ in 12 months time. Interesting times ahead.

His S/R is what worries people. He usually comes in at around 35-45 over mark. That is where you need players who can score at a 100 S/R. We have seen countless number of times where he plays at snails pace for his first 30 balls (more like a 65 S/R) and sucks the life out of the innings. He does hit a few boundaries after 47th over and ensures his S/R is close to 85. But he does more damage than good when playing good bowling attacks.

MSD is still a gun keeper. I have no problems with his keeping. But if he is touted as some sort of finisher coming in at No.5, then Indian team is in trouble. MSD is a strictly No.7 or No.8 batsman at this stage in his career. He is not a finisher.

India needs a 3 batsmen who can come in at No.4, No.5, No.6 and take the attack to the opposition. MSD should only be a back up option if all fails. But if Team India is relying on MSD to play like he was in 2005-2011, then our team is doomed.

Trying out batsmen like Karthik, Jadhav is waste of time. They are average players. I am not convinced of Iyer either. He will be exposed by good bowling attacks.

India needs to quickly find 2 or 3 youngsters who can do the jobs at 4, 5, 6 positions in the next 1 year.

Dhoni whose current phase is complete antithesis of his career until 3 years ago

I was one of Dhoni's greatest fan until 3 years ago. One of India's greatest match winner , keeper , captain etc. Legitimate claim to be ODI ATG. When Dhoni was at the crease , India held a possible chance of winning.

But right now , it is complete opposite. Lost his hitting ability , usual mojo etc. Not trustworthy now to successfully orchestrate victory. Once in a while , scores some run to keep him in the team. Disintegrated so much that it would be a case of " If Dhoni is in the crease , opponents have a great chance of Victory" .

Has any player in history disintegrated this much before ?

Yuvraj, but more due to cancer than anything else

What pure joy it was to see Dhoni bat like a champion yesterday! To be very honest, I can never swallow it when his team loses a match, but for the first time in life the thought of the disappointment at the defeat hasn´t crossed my mind even once. I´m just very happy and grateful for such, such an entertaining innings.

Even now when he isn´t the same batsman anymore, he has still had the habit of pulling off an impossible win each each in the IPL, so I thought maybe this will be the one for this year, but it didn´t end up that way. The back spasm that he got quite early in the innings hindered him from reaching those wide deliveries that were bowled at him to keep him quiet in the last over, and also effected his running between the wickets (means a lot in what was ultimately just a four-run loss).

All in all, thank you MS for all the entertainment!

He has become an embarrassment. Waste all the deliveries in the middle overs and then a hit a few sixes in the end to make it seem close. Same pattern over and over again.

It's time for Sanju Samson to take over.

Dhoni is the best hope other teams have especially with India's weak middle order that may result in him batting higher

It wouldn't have minded if he was not playing for the national team today and doing this bit in IPL (IPL teams are of course weak with the tail starting at No.5 in most teams!)

Pant should be the one to replace him, in future, in fact he should be playing all three formats for India, as a WK batsman.

Ticked! Yesterday was one for this season.

The back spasm that he got quite early in the innings hindered him from reaching those wide deliveries that were bowled at him to keep him quiet in the last over,....

Ticked! That six of a low full-toss outside the off-stump, the one that was sent over point, proved my point.

.... and also effected his running between the wickets (means a lot in what was ultimately just a four-run loss).

Ticked! He could run and hit with much more freedom yesterday.

And now talking about the innings itself, wow, just wow! Dhoni at his best, MS in full flow! Just with how much ease he hit those sixes and just how unaffected he looked walking in with a required run-rate of 12 in 11 overs left. Ever since he has lost his touch the recent years, I´ve never seen him in as good a form as he is in right now. Stunning hitting under severe pressure twice already this IPL. It´s after a long, long time that I´ve enjoyed a cricket match as I did yesterday. I had a big smile on my face when I went to bed. :D

I´m enjoying cricket once again, finally! :msd

I would say he is the best finisher in the history of shorter formats at every level , absolutely gem of a player . People seemed to have forgotten how he used to finish matches for India in last 10 years .

Never was in t20Is, has regressed big time in ODIs as well
