What's new

Multan Sultans (176/3) defeat Karachi Kings (174/6) by seven wickets in Match 23 of PSL 7

Leaving 45 from 20 for the middle/lower middle order is unfair. Those coming in have all the the right to feel angry towards Rizwan and Maqsood.

You can just play yourself in and let the other do the hard-yards. If Multan loses this, its on Rizwan and Maqsood. Bizarre tactics!

Rizwan has done his job

After making a meal of it until his 50, the last 20 runs he has scored have done the job

Lol! No, he hasn't. He let the RRR climb up to 12+, he made the situation worse than what he found it in. RRR at the start of the innings was less than 9. You either stay with or ahead of the game...Rizwan put Multan behind the game only for the lower order to come in and rescue them.

This has been poor from the openers.

Tbh that 18 run over to Umaid was crucial

Rizwan knows how to target a weak link and make it look like he has played a blinder

Shaan and rizzy got too confident today I reckon and should have went harder earlier, if ms lose it will be on them and I've been supporting them this whole psl

Sorry mate

This is how they play. They can’t play like Roy and Butler

It was crucial, yes. But I think it was a little too late? He let the game drift away too much. That is like praising Misbah for the hitting he did in the Mohali game right at the end. What is the point of that when you've left it too late.

Now, can you blame Tim David for getting out? Of course you cannot. He did not have any option but to go after every ball. For a new batter to start hitting from the get-go is impossible.

Rizz and Maqsood mucked up this run chase and only an incredible innings from down the order can save them now.

I’m pretty sure Umaid or Jordan is going to go for a 20 run over

Wrong . Maqsood has played A LOT better than this. Strolling at a strike rate of 115 for more than half the innings? Rizwan is better than this as well.

This is why you get AHEAD of the game as quickly as possible.

I also think it was a case of being too confident. Too confident that they could accelerate whenever they wanted to and also in the ability of the lower order.

The fine margins in cricket ,it could turn out that rizzy may have played a blinder to set it up

Okay, that's a little too much. The guy hitting the sixes is bringing his team home... Rizz left when MS had a RRR of 12+... not a blinder IMO

MS had set it up perfectly. They always had a lot of power hitters in their lineup to chase this down.

If you are needing 52 from 24, you have not set it up perfectly. Easy to say that when someone plays an innings like Khushdil is playing... but that won't happen often.

We saw this all too regularly during the Misbah era where we ended up falling short of very mediocre targets by leaving too much at the end.

rrr of 12+ bit of misleading.. when he gone they need 45 off 20 balls.. pretty much chasable..

Good point. I agree that you shouldn't be looking at RRR when only a few overs are left... However, it should never come down to 52 from 24 when your first wicket falls in the 15th over.

Karachi deserves 0-10 and I am from Karachi - sad season of cricket for Karachites!

Why Karachi always choose Jordan and that bearded tall guy in the death.. they almost every time goes for plenty runs..

Its a strategy that can work if you have firepower in your middle and lower middle order

Like i said, results counts more then playing 200 strike rate at opening. Multan won 7 matches with good cricketing openers, who are not slashers but proper players. So hopefully people can stop now with nonsense about intent.

Jordan's single handedly played a pivotal role in ensuring Karachi lose two winnable games. Lulz.

Lol..KK 8 in a row.

Chris Jordan is most overrated death bowler I ever seen.
He got hammered in IPL
He getting hammered in SPL

Multan Sultans skipper Mohammad Rizwan led from the front as his side overcame a stiff challenge from the winless Karachi Kings to register their seventh win out of eight round matches in the 23rd match of the HBL Pakistan Super League 7 played at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Wednesday night.

Sultans were set a 175-run target, Shan Masood and Rizwan provided their side a 100-run start to the chase. Kings however, remained in the game as their bowlers kept a check on the Sultans scoring rate. By the time Shan (45 off 41, six fours) was dismissed by Mir Hamza – 15th over, the asking rate had climbed past 13 runs per over.

Rizwan (76 off 56, eight fours) upped the ante after Shan’s departure with five fours in a space of seven balls. Rizwan took 18 off the 16th over bowled by Umaid Asif before hitting another boundary off Chris Jordan. Jordan hit back by having Rizwan caught by Qasim Akram to reignite Kings’ hopes.

It came down to 29 off the last 12 balls, Khushdil Shah played a series of sensational shots off Jordan as the experienced English bowler conceded 20 runs with Khushdil hitting two sixes and one four.

The match was finished by a magnificent strike by Rilee Rossouw over mid-wicket off the third ball of the final over bowled by Umaid as Sultans finished the match with three balls to spare. Sultans ended-up scoring 71 runs off the last 27 balls.

Sultans are now firm favourites to finish in the top-two in the play-offs (14 points from eight matches). Kings’ are still searching for their first win of the season (eight matches, eight defeats), the 2020 champions have already been eliminated from the play-off race.

Other performers

Kings won the toss and opted to bat first. After the early loss of Babar Azam, Sharjeel Khan and Joe Clarke added 72 runs for the second-wicket. Sharjeel hit two sixes and a four in his 36. Clarke played some scintillating shots in his 40 off 29 (three fours, two sixes).

Rohail Nazir and Mohammad Nabi provided impetus to the innings with their breezy 21-run contributions off 12 and 15 balls respectively.

Imad Wasim who hit a 50 in Kings one-run loss to United in the previous match provided the finishing touches to the total with an unbeaten 32 off 16 (five fours, one six), Kings posted 174 for six in their 20 overs.

Player of the match Mohammad Rizwan: “We didn’t play as well as we could have, our bowling wasn’t up to the mark and we allowed them to score extra runs. The real credit for the win goes to Khushdil and Rossouw as they played remarkably well to finish the game for us, Shan and I didn’t quite bat at the required rate. The pitch was a bit challenging and it wasn’t easy to score runs because of the double pace. We will provide chances to our youngsters in the remaining group matches our plan would be to sustain the winning momentum.”

Scores in brief:

Karachi Kings 174 for 6, 20 overs (Joe Clarke 40, Sharjeel Khan 36, Imad Wasim 32 not out; Shahnawaz Dahani 2-44)

Multan Sultans 176 for 3, 19.3 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 76, Shan Masood 45; Mir Hamza 2-24)

Multan had almost miscalculated and goofed up the run-chase, but then Jordan did what he does best and robbed Karachi off their first win in the ongoing edition. What a bowler! Also, admirable hitting by Khushdil Shah. That six to the off-side was a marvellous hit!
