Multan Sultans (196/2) win a last-ball thriller against Karachi Kings (193/5) by 3 runs

This match is befitting of a crowd of this size. Well done to the people of Multan. Creating a full house. Amazing atmosphere.

even though MS won Abbas Afridi should learn from this and not to bowl length deliveries at that moment

Imad lost 2 close finishes not his fault Malik and Haider messed up a simple chase.

Not sure Abbas deserved to win lol after that over. But great game though.

Irrespective of the result, Imad deserves to get back into the limited over squad...

Imad does well with the bat but not enough to cross the line, happened in earlier matches too. Not easy to make up for the lack of effort from other players..

Rizwan is the best white ball captain of Pakistan. Imad deserves a chance in the team. Ihsan is loaded with talent. Lots of positives, what a game it was !

exactly Malik throwing away at both the occasions, when you have to strike 200 plus you cant rely only on one batter.

Feel bad for Karachi. Should have won. Both fixers weren't playing.

Karachi right now is basically a team of 3 players (Wade, Vince & Imad) of whom one will leave soon. Doesn’t matter since their tournament is now over

Btw it bizzare to not run byes on those big wides.. that was poor from Wasim side..

Imad and Cutting should have been able to finish the job. 6 runs of 4 deliveries is a done deal. A real choke job in the end.

This was the last over from Abbas Afridi.

He almost gave it away but amazing nerves to comeback and win it for Multan.

The ball Cutting got out to was short and wide should have hit the gap and run a couple poor game awareness trying to hit the big shot 6 off 4 balls should be chased 9/10.

Karachi are a rubbish squad but thanks to Imad and a few contributions from others they are finishing much closer.

They don't even try to run for byes on those big wides.. imad lack game awareness, he's the in-form bat and he should've tried to get back to strike..

Kings did well to get it to last over bit should have won it from there.

Imad has been the unluckiest of all captains this year. KK however, does have a captain now who is not entertaining his cronies while stat padding himself.

Losers of the game in order - Malik, Cutting, and Haider. What was Malik doing when RRR was around 9. I do understand taking the T20 deep down to 12 RRR in the last few overs while preserving wickets but, 14 or more is suicidal. Cutting should just give strike to Imad who was hitting flawlessly. Haider needs a psychiatric counseling to regain confidence.

Centuries in T20 cricket are not often eclipsed, but the Wednesday night threw one such classic in which Multan Sultans snatched victory by mere three runs against Karachi Kings in what was the last HBL Pakistan Super League 8 contest in Multan.

The heroics from the two captains have etched the 11th match of the HBL PSL 8 as one of the epics in the tournament’s history. Mohammad Rizwan, the home side’s captain, scored a splendid century – his first of the HBL PSL and overall second – that set Karachi Kings 197 to win and with the match almost settled in Multan Sultans’ favour, Imad Wasim’s blazing 46 not out off 26 made the Karachi Kings fan and dugout believe till the last ball.

The match had swung like a pendulum but the last two overs had the most thrill and drama. Here is how it went. With 40 needed, the pair of Imad and Ben Cutting thrashed Mohammad Ilyas for 18. Abbas Afridi, who had been a victim of Karachi Kings openers’ ruthless attack, bowled a waist high no-ball on what should have been the first ball of the last over that was launched over the midwicket boundary for a gigantic six by Imad. After a wide and a single, Cutting smoked a 107-meter long maximum, which was followed by another wide. With six needed off three balls, Cutting holed out to long-off. Young all-rounder Muhammad Irfan Khan could only muster a single and with five off one, Imad could only get a single with his powerful shot to the long-off.

Karachi Kings openers – James Vince and Matthew Wade – went ballistic from the onset of the run chase and the pair raced their side to 72 in the Powerplay. The introduction of Usama Mir paid dividends for Rizwan right away as the leg-spinner trapped Wade in front. It was a bizzare mix-up between Vince and Haider Ali in the 10th over that ended up in the former’s run out and allowed Multan Sultans to claw back into the game.

So good had Vince been that he had made 75 of his side’s 105 runs by the 9.5 overs mark, when he was run out, in just 34 balls, smashing seven fours and six disdainful sixes.

Haider (12 off 17) and Shoaib Malik (13 off 19) failed to keep up with the scoring rate and when the latter fell in the 17th over, Karachi Kings needed 49 off 19.

Though Ihsanullah, the leading wicket-taker of the season, remained wicket less, he bowled superbly for none for 17 off four overs. Abbas took two wickets for 55.

Karachi Kings would have regretted their decision to field after winning the toss with Rizwan and Shan Masood breaching the 50-run mark in the Powerplay in what turned out to be a sparkling 85-run stand from 10.2 overs. The pair was aided by lacklustre fielding as the first phase of the Powerplay saw misfields convert into boundaries.

It was an outing to remember for Rizwan as his scintillating strokeplay saw him race to 100 from 50 in just 18 balls after he had taken 42 balls to breach the 50-run mark. Such was Rizwan’s domination that Rilee Rossouw, upon whom Multan Sultans have relied to play the role of the top-order aggressor, was overshadowed. The wicketkeeper-batter spanked 110 off 64 balls, hitting 10 fours and four sixes.

After struggling to get going in the first four matches, Shan scored 51 off 33 (six fours and a six) and Rossouw made 29 off 21.

Multan Sultans have now won seven of the eight matches they have played in Multan in the HBL PSL history. Their only loss came this season when they lost to Lahore Qalandars in the season opener. They sit comfortably at the top of the table with eight points. Karachi Kings find themselves on the fourth spot with a solitary win – that against arch rivals, Lahore – in five matches.

Scores in brief:

Multan Sultans 196-2, 20 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 110 not out, Shan Masood 51, Rilee Rossouw 29)

Karachi Kings 193-5, 20 overs (James Vince 75, Imad Wasim 46 not out, Matthew Wade 20; Abbas Afridi 2-55)

Player of the match – Mohammad Rizwan (Multan Sultans)

Tomorrow’s fixture:

1900 – Peshawar Zalmi v Islamabad United at the National Bank Cricket Arena, Karachi

Imad Wasim speaking after the game

We had it in the bag and couldn't finish it off. The intent was really nice but we slowed down in the middle overs but it is T20 cricket and you have to finish games. We have to sit and talk, if we lose one more then we are out of the competition, we are there and thereabout, it is a matter of correcting those small mistakes and getting over the line.

Highlights of this nail-biter

Need to admire Rizwan's calm collected captaincy. Afridi was a train wreck in that final over but not once did Rizwan panic or shout at the bowler or show his frustration. The Multan Sultan's team looks a happy settled bunch under him.

Rizwan's bowling changes and field placings were also spot on, lots of shots hit by Malik and Imad went straight to the fielders and instead of boundaries and twos, the batters were restricted to singles. Babar in comparison as captain usually makes mess of the bowling changes and field placements.

Hahah Imad choked again. He’s equally to blame was batting at a run a ball against proper bowlers he feasted on rubbish bowlers in Ilyas and Abbas which he won’t get in international cricket.

Can you name the world class bowlers who Rizwan scored his hundred against today?

Karachi Kings have only themselves to blame. They lost 20 runs in the field due to midfields which went for boundaries. Vince got themselves off to a dream start and they couldn't capitalize. Imad and Cuttings should have pulled off the win with 6 to get off three deliveries.
