What's new

Multan Sultans (210/3) thrash Peshawar Zalmi (154 all out) by 56 runs in Match 5 of PSL8

Good thing is that the tuk tuk anchors that open our batting in international cricket and hide behind the excuse that we have no alternative had a front row seat to this masterclass. Hopefully they have some shame and step down from their positions

They will never ever

Saim Ayub picking up length and hitting pace of Ihsanullah easily. Pakistan is easily the most talented cricket nation.

Babar the t20 opener may be marked as end, however you can't remove babar from t20i team. He will play at 3

Wow Waqar is quite good with his Urdu commentary. A complete contrast to his English commentary.

Can’t believe the likes of Saim are being kept out of the ODI and T20 side whilst shameless and pathetic batsmen like Shan Masood get into the team simply because they have influential fathers who are PMLN supporters. If I was Shan Masood I would declare my retirement today just out of pure shame

Usama Mir sure has really improved in the last couple of years. Was always so wayward and expensive.

PZ falling apart now.

All good to hit everything out of the park but need to take stock a bit now

Saim ayub should be drafted in the t20 team next day.
Odi though? Where will you play him? Playing him 4 will be a travesty.

I am surprised Indians are watching our league (not meant in an offensive way ofcourse)

Hard to ignore the quality of cricket being played in our league. Indian fans do understand this game well and appreciate the good contest between bat and ball.

RRR above 13 now. Don't see PZ chasing this as remaining overs will be bowled by main bowlers

At the very least he needs to be brought in as a backup opener in place of parchi Shan Masood. Ideally he’d replace Imam Ul Haq, but that won’t happen because our management has a 19th century mentality towards LOI. I’m more worried that if they bring Saim into the T20 side they’ll put him at 4. Already Haris is at #3 and Fakhar will probably be played at #5. Basically we’ll play all aggressive top order batsmen in the middle order, where they’ll obviously struggle and then our anchors will say they do tuk tuk because the middle order is weak.

Good fifty but not a fan of arrogance. No need to show off after your strokes

Not sure I would. Seen too many young players fail now. Look at Umar Akmal, Haider Ali etc.

Saim is so young. I would rather wait until he is 23 years old before even thinking of selection. Babar was selected at 22 at he was a child prodigy. If we wait a few more years, where he's rained in domestic runs for fun, I think there's a greater chance of him succeeding when we actually debut him. England and India aren't debuting these 20 year olds anymore, and the guys that are young like Harry Brook already have just under 100 T20 games at 23.

I don't think there's any harm waiting. But I think on the reverse a career can be destroyed too being picked too early and too much pressure. I really think Umar for example would have done far better picked later.

No problem at all, Babar always holds his pose after his cover drive and Rizwan always shows off the face of his bat to the bowler for an extended period of time after his trademark tuk tuk forward defense in the power play

At this stage of his career , it'd be best if he avoids picking up those traits. There's a lot he can learn from Babar and Rizwan. Just needs to put his head down and focus on the game and not go the Umar Akmal route

Yes boy :))

There is nothing he can learn from those two

Those two can learn from him

Ok bro. If you think so but just take a look at this match. By your own metrics, you have to admit a strike rate of 157 is better than 143

It would be criminal if Harris & Ayub are kept out of wc squad when a guy like SM gets automatic entry. PCB needs to understand the game has really evolved. You need impact players rather than accumulators. Miandad 92 template worked once but simply doesn't cut in this era. These two along with Haider need to be backed up for the sake of Pak cricket's next 12/15 years. No matter how brilliant your bowling is you need atleast some level of fire power in your batting to win a white ball tournament now.

Absolute rubbish. He can learn tons from Babar and Rizwan including:

- Advertising techniques for Gray Nicholls
- Hero complex and how to use religion to improve your image
- #Takethegamedeep

Usama mir turning the game on it's head.

Rizwan's captaincy really. He had derailed this chase in the PP by using his part timers and giving a false sense of security to PZ, only to choke them after with the main bowlers. Man reads the game really well

Gullycricket your not tagging me today are you boy?

Looks like two agressive youngsters are shaping up. However they still need time before drafting them fully. Maybe with T20 bilateral series give them chances and if they perform fade out Babar, Shan and Riz. Shan has to go anyway. But till then Rizbar stays since Sharjeel etc have miserably failed

This would have been a very close game if Babar did not get out cheaply today. I was hoping for another blockbuster game

If these two youngsters start performing consistently then PCT can think like India where Hardik is taking over. So maybe for 2024 WC under Shadab it can be them but we need to be cautious. Have been burned before

PZ has wasted the last 3 overs due to losing too many wickets and are in a position to get all out. So yes the boys can learn to #takethegamedeep from Rizbar

Haris wicket was the turning point. Zalmi lost momentum after that.

Shame we have had two back to back one sided games. This game had more fireworks but match didn't go to wire.

PZ were awful.

Their fielding is embarrassing at times.

Need to change it around - Darren Sammy over to you.

Rilee Rossouw’s red-hot form continued on Friday as his blistering 75 off 36 anchored Multan Sultan’s to a comfortable 56-run win over Peshawar Zalmi at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The left-hander smoked 12 fours and two sixes as Multan Sultans posted the highest score of this edition – 210 – after being asked to bat, before Peshawar Zalmi were bowled out for 154 in 18.5 overs.

Rossouw arrived in the middle at the 7.2 overs with the scorecard reading 54 for one. Though Shan Masood stuttered to his 20 off 25, Mohammad Rizwan’s free flowing innings ensured that the hosts’ run rate stayed at par.

Rizwan made 66 off 42 – studded with nine fours and a six – before he was undone by a wronger one from left-arm wrist spinner Sufiyan Muqeem. It was after this wicket that Rossouw cut loose and began the onslaught. He added 75 runs in just 35 balls with David Miller, who made 23 off 14, and his superlative knock ended on the last ball of the penultimate over when Salman Irshad hit his back leg as he attempted a reverse sweep.

This was Rossouw’s second half-century in the HBL Pakistan Super League 8 in as many matches.

Kieron Pollard kept the rhythm going, spanking Wahab Riaz for a six and two fours in the last over, which was marred by two no balls and fielding lapses, and added 19 runs to the Multan Sultans’ total. The bulky West Indian made 15 not out off six.

Peshawar Zalmi required a flying start and they got that with Mohammad Haris dispatching Khushdil Shah and Sameen Gul for three sixes – two were hit of consecutive balls off the latter – in the first two overs and racing his side to 22. Multan Sultans, however, struck gold in the fifth over when Ihsanullah, the hero of Multan Sultan’s win against Quetta Gladiators, got Babar Azam out LBW.

The wicket brought Saim Ayub on the crease, who drove Ihsanullah for four with a glorious cover drive. He smoked him for a six over deep fine leg latter in the over and brought Peshawar Zalmi back into the contest.

What followed next must have pleased the Pakistan cricket fans and is a good omen for the national cricketing set up. This pair of these young cricketers – Saim is 20 and yet to make international debut, while Haris, who lightened up the T20 World Cup in Australia, is 21 – put 47 in 4.2 overs with their high quality repertoire of strokes.

Saim came into this tournament after a terrific National T20, where he guided Sindh to the title by scoring 416 runs at an incredible strike rate of 155.22. The left-hander was the second best batter in the tournament behind Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sahibzada Farhan, who had made 13 runs more.

Saim clubbed Carlos Brathwaite for a towering six over long on at the start of the sixth over, but the moment of the innings came on the first ball of the seventh, when he played a no-look flick for a six over fine leg off Abbas Afridi. Haris would treat Abbas with another maximum at the end of the over.

Abbas, however, had his revenge of sorts when a mix up saw Haris in the middle of the pitch and his direct hit sent the right-hander back to the pavilion after scoring 40 off 23 with four sixes and a four.

Saim held his end, but the wickets continued to fall from the other end, and with a massive total on the board, the pressure continued to mount. Saim, however, went on to score his maiden HBL PSL fifty with a 37-ball 53 (three sixes and as many fours) before he was undone by Usama Mir, who bowled exceptionally for his three for 22 in four overs.

Ihsanullah (three for 24) and Abbas (two for 33) cleaned up the remaining batting order from that point as Multan Sultans, the finalists of the last edition and the winners of the 2021, sailed to their second win in the tournament and to the top of the points table.

Scores in brief:

Multan Sultans 210-3, 20 overs (Rilee Rossouw 75, Mohammad Rizwan 66, David Miller 23 not out, Shan Masood 20; Salman Irshad 2-38)

Peshawar Zalmi 154 all out, 18.5 overs (Saim Ayub 53, Mohammad Haris 40, Rovman Powell 23; Usama Mir 3-22, Ihsanullah 3-24, Abbas Afridi 2-33)

Player of the match – Rilee Rossouw (Multan Sultans)

Saturday’s fixture:

1900 – Karachi Kings v Quetta Gladiators at National Bank Cricket Arena

Rajapaksa May turn out to be a bad move

It seems Raja is the king of slow turners and high pressure/low run scoring games. He can’t match the middle order power of the PSL overseas players

Mohammad Rizwan: They started well. It was a little tough when we started. Haris and Ayub batted really well. It was tough for us when we were batting. 160 was par on this wicket. Our power hitting is known. I am very happy with our pace bowling. You have to adjust as power-hitters and batters. Usama isn't allowing any team to have any momentum. He is doing it consistently for us.

Babar Azam: Our bowling wasn't up to the mark. The fielding was also not good. Rizwan batted well. We didn't execute our plans. The wicket was good. Back-to-back wickets increased the pressure on us. The two youngsters executed the team's plans really well. Ayub and Haris showed great intent. They would want to do better in future. The conditions here are different compared to Karachi. We will try to field our best 11.

Rilee Rossouw: I think the first game it was a little tacky. A little two paced. But the second game was good. We were looking for 160. But with wickets in hand and momenum we got over 200.

Shan Masood: We were 15 runs short. We didn't wan't to be in a situation like this. The future of Pakistan batting is safe. We are very clear about our roles.

If you enjoyed Muhammad Harris and Saim Ayub set the PSL alight….

Gimme a H*ll yeaaah

Supporting Peshawar Zalmi for Babar Azam and Saim Ayub

Good luck Babar and saim for future matches 🥰

Harris and Saim should open for Zalmi.Babar should come in at number 3.Let the young openers play fearless cricket. If one of them gets out then Babar can steady the innings.

I was actually following Shakib's performance during BPL ... he was in red-hot form. Probably in the form of his life in T20 format. Why did they drop him for Powel LOL?

Both Powell and Shakib should be in the xi

Exactly I would drop him and bring Shakib back in the xi
