Villagers in Jharkhand’s Gumla district allegedly tied a 20-year-old Muslim man to a tree and thrashed him for hours for being in love with a Hindu woman, leading to his death, police said on Friday.

The man – identified as Mohammad Shalik, a resident of Raza Colony in Gumla town – was allegedly in a relationship with a Hindu woman of a nearby village, Soso, for more than a year, sources said.

The girl allegedly called the boy to meet her at Gumla town for the Ram Navami procession on Wednesday. Fearing trouble, Shakil initially refused but finally went to meet her on a scooty and dropped her home, police said.

It is then that a group of neighbours saw Shalik and surrounded him, tied him to a tree and assaulted him for hours, the woman was quoted as saying by police. He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Police said they arrested three people and lodged an FIR against unnamed people. “Though investigation is on, we were told by the villagers that the boy had been asked earlier not to meet the girl and never visit the village,” said Gumla superintendent of police Chandan Kumar Jha.

The incident comes amid rising communal tensions in the state following a slew of controversial initiatives in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. Activists have cried foul against Jharkhand’s decision to create anti-romeo squads and seal illegal slaughterhouses, saying that the moves unfairly targeted the Muslim community.

Its not as simple as that and you know it. Hindus , especially in rural areas, have lots of restrictions when it comes to marriage. Gotra, jati, biradri village endogamy and exogamy etc etc i know this 100% that even if a muslim converts to hinduism, he wont be allowed to marry a hindu woman as a straight forward case especially in rural India.

NEW DELHI: A Muslim man was beaten to death for dating a Hindu girl in India, police said on Friday, in the latest mob violence against minorities in the country.

Constitution allows inter caste, inter religious marriages and there are incentives for couples but most the people belonging to many poor states are not aware of this.

When a Muslim man marries a Hindu women, she has to convert or the marriage is off. This is one of the main issue for RSS and their brethren. The Love Jihad.

To avoid being harassed or worst beaten to death, a Muslim man should think about sacrificing his religion for the sake of the girls love. He should show he has bigger heart too. If the man approaches Arya Samaj and tells his story, they will be more than happy to help him.

I have seen 2 cases where one a Hindu girl and another a Christian girl convert to Islam to marry a Muslim boys in my home town. No one said a thing except for their family members who were upset with their girls. That was 20yrs ago and RSS and VHP were not big back then in South India. Now situation has changed. They are everywhere.

My personal belief is that anytime a Hindu and Muslim are involved in love and think about wedding, they both should give up their religion. Conversion only breeds bitter hatred where the parents of the girl can go and complain to police and the news spreads in no time before Hindu organizations get involved and can lead to riots.

Thanks, that is what I thought, it's pretty obvious to even the casual observer really, but some of the more joshila Indian patriots on here should stop insulting our intelligence by trumpeting India's secular constitution.

Are you sure its not a problem even in rural areas ? My area is notorious the opposing of inter religious and caste marriages. You won't see it much in the cities but in rural areas it is a big deal. Hindus don't force any one to convert in Tamil Nadu for most part, generally it is the Muslims and Christians that do. Muslims and Christians are minority religiously and it is not surprising that they like to product part of their identity. You can't convert to castes so it is a major issue. People like to marry their children off to higher caste but will go crazy if their daughter or son wants to marry a lower caste. Some people can't handle the recent success of lower castes youth.

Whist entirely condemning this incident this is the nature of most South Asian men. They don't mind if men in their family date or marry outside their religion but will never allow the ladies to do that. I am talking about regular people here not celebrities. It would have been similar had the man been Hindu and lady Muslim.
