Kerala BJP state president PS Sreedharan Pillai’s distasteful comment on Muslims has sparked a political row. Speaking at a campaign rally in Attingal on Sunday, Sreedharan Pillai said with a giggle that Muslims can be identified by ‘removing their clothes’, in a reference to circumcision. Speaking about the Balakot Air Strike by the Indian Air Force, Sreedharan Pillai said, “Our Rahul Gandhi, Yechury, and Pinarayi are saying, our soldiers have to go there and see the count of the dead...their caste, religion etc.”

“If it is Islam, there are some signs, no?” he continued, “If you remove their clothes you will be able to know. We have to do all that and return is what they are saying.” He was referring to questions being raised about the number of people killed in the Balakot strike; several international media houses have questioned the BJP’s stated figures, whereas the Indian Air Force itself has not declared any numbers.

While Congress advisor Sam Pitroda and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury have questioned the government's numbers, and many opposition leaders had followed suit, no one has made any comments about the religion or caste of those killed.

Sreedharan Pillai made the remark during a campaign in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections in the state. He was campaigning for BJP’s Attingal candidate Sobha Surendran in the constituency on Sunday.

However, despite the video doing the rounds, speaking to TNM, the BJP state president denied having made such a comment during the campaign. “This is a Himalayan lie. I have never made any such comment anywhere. I will be taking legal action to counter these allegations and the complaint against me in the EC,” he said.

Pillai's comment has drawn widespread criticism from both LDF and Congress leaders in the state. A complaint has also been filed with the Election Commission by CPI(M) leader VS Sivankutty, who alleged that the remark was a blatant violation of the Model Code of Conduct as it targeted a religious community.

Speaking at a press meet in Attingal, Sivankutty, who is the coordinator of CPI(M) candidate A Sampath’s campaign in the constituency, stated the BJP state chief’s comment was also a criminal act under IPC Section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion).

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala stated that Sreedharan Pillai’s remark was an insult to the Muslim community. He added that the BJP leader must rescind his statement and offer a public apology for the incident, failing which the Returning Officer must take action against him.

IUML leader and Malappuram MP PK Kunhalikutty also severely criticised the BJP Chief’s remark. He said that the incident was BJP’s attempt to polarise and build their vote bank, adding that such an attempt would not work in Kerala and would only result in loss of votes for the party.

While BJP is notorious for making cringeworthy comments, India should feel we are very lucky. You cannot tell a Hindu from a Muslim, Christian, Sikh or Jain unless you have to dig deep. All of us look the same.

And BJP has never won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, never in the history of Indian politics.

There are some other ways you can tell if a person is muslim...

Unless they have a specific label of course you wont be able to know the religion of a person. This is the same everywhere.

The main issue here is once again BJP members have shown hate towards a minority group.

It's fair to say the Indian government is made up of members who are anti-Muslim.

Starting to sound alot like the third reich. Stay safe my muslim brothers and sisters.

We don't have the racial issues like you see in Europe or America. In Europe, you can easily tell someone is a black or Muslim (Arab and Pakistani) from a while person.

BJP is a party of idiots. The only way they can get votes is by fanning religious sentiments. It's in the party's DNA and open for everyone to see.

Congress fans caste based politics and BJP fans religious based politics. State based parties are even worse.

Most people in India are brown, would be pretty silly to have race issues.

Muslims come in all races and backgrounds, so unless one is visibily showing his/her faith, you cannot tell if a white or black person is a Muslim or not esp in cities such as London.

The people voting for the BJP because of their anti-Muslim rhetoric are Indians. Is this an old way of thinking or has the BJP motivated this hate from their hearts?

He is only saying what most Indians know to be true anyway. This was a time honoured tactic in the days of partition where males of all ages were stripped to identify their faith so they could be identified and killed. In a third world country rife with superstition and religious mumbo jumbo you would expect no less, only in India those who are expressing the sentiments are the leaders.

OP must also post regarding the comment by Azam khan. But then again...we just want to show one side of the coin...a narrative which is old and became outdated.

Im surprised this is coming from Kerala. Most peaceful and humble people I have seen.

Thanks to their loyal and joshilay supporters. :inti

there will always be supporters, but why are the election commission and the supreme court so toothless. the supreme court in particular is the most rotten institution in the country. the judiciary is the reason for most of the ills of this third world country.

Or what obscenities that BJP's Shimla legislator uttered about Rahul. Or what BJP's legislators said about Priyanka's clothes.

Then Indians say Pakistan and Islam are no factor in Indian elections! For goodness sake votes are decided on these two matters.

Another feather in the cap of great BJP

Sadhvi Pragya Thakur is contesting on BJP ticket, terror accused in Malegaon bombing. You gotta give it to BJP, just when you think all these anti Muslim and anti Pakistan nutcases are enough they come up with Yogi's and Sadhvi's.

Now i am shocked how majority of India can madly support group of hateful extremists. None of Pakistani top leadership is even 10% as toxic as BJP. It's not a surprise how Pakistani leadership kept competing with each other who promoted peace with India the most whereas in India it's about who hates Pakistan the most.

Be prepared to be shocked even more in coming days. Instances like these would be regular features if bigots have their way and they choose Modi for another term.

Pakistan as our neighbors must be alarmed with this as you've to have your neighborhood in peace to live in peace yourselves.

Another highly objectionable comment by a BJP functionary, this time out rightly racist...

Meanwhile, in yet another low in the election season, former BJP MLA of Karnataka Raju Kage directed his ire towards state chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy saying, “You say prime minister changes outfits again and again…he is fair and handsome, that’s why he changes (outfits) constantly. But even if you (Kumaraswamy) bathe 100 times a day, you will remain a black buffalo.”

Sadhvi is contesting against Digvijay Singh...a known hindu hater. He is the person who invented the word hindu terror and claimed RSS was behind 26/11. Its a perfect move by BJP to pit a nutjob like Sadhvi against a bigot hinduphobic Digvijay singh.
