"Muslims Don't Worship Lakshmi. Aren't They Rich?" BJP MLA Sparks Row
Lalan Paswan, an MLA from Pirpainti Assembly constituency in Bhagalpur district of Bihar, said the concept of "atma and paramatma" are just people's belief.

Patna: Bihar BJP MLA Lalan Paswan courted controversy on Wednesday over his statements about Hindu deities. The MLA from Pirpainti Assembly constituency in Bhagalpur district raised questions on Hindu beliefs and argued with 'evidence' to prove his stance.

A protest was held against him at Shermari Bazar in Bhagalpur and his effigy was also burnt.

Mr Paswan also questioned the worship of Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali.

"If we get wealth only by worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, then there would have been no billionaires and trillionaires among Muslims. Muslims do not worship Goddess Lakshmi, are they not rich? Muslims do not worship Goddess Saraswati. Are there no scholars among Muslims? Do they not become IAS or IPS?" asked the MLA.

The BJP leader said the concept of "atma and paramatma" are just people's belief.

He said, "If you believe then it is a Goddess, and if not then it is just a stone idol. It is up to us whether we believe in Gods and Goddesses or not. We have to think on a scientific basis to reach a logical conclusion. If you stop believing, then your intellectual capacity will increase."

"It is believed that Bajrangbali is a deity with power and bestows strength. Muslims or Christians do not worship Bajrangbali. Are they not powerful? The day you stop believing, all these things will end," said Mr Paswan.

Mr Paswan had earlier grabbed headlines after he allegedly leaked a conversation with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Yadav.

Kahan se doodndh ke laate ho ye sab news :))

I take one quick glance at premium Indian news websites and Pak news websites and off the top of my head see at least 25 news items that probably deserve a discussion. I guess we all have our own tastes.

Don't shoot the messenger and discuss the topic at hand. You are more than welcome to share those 25 news items yourself. These tactics to derail the thread won't work everytime. :inti

Shows that even the BJP has some leaders that question hindu beliefs openly and can also get away with it. I doubt the BJP is going to expel this guy.
And they call it a right-wing facist and intolerant party!

I doubt the Owaisis will forgive any AIMIM leader if he asks why so many non-muslims are so happy despite not worshipping Allah.

His comments don't appear too bad.

Most religious people question these things.

In our religion the reason for worshiping Allah is not for the achievement of material success. I think he is saying something similar.

The point he made about Hanuman and the US was an interesting one too but it hasn't been reported in this particular article.

Obviously it doesn't seem to have gone down well with the masses.

Tbh from an Islamic perspective its not a radical question. It's questions that 5-6 year old kids ask and its a reasonably common topic.

So I don't think there is much risk of a prominent muslim leader trying to get a mundane point like this across to the masses, but it's great to see you compare the BJP with Owaisis.

He has a point. Hinduism has gone from logical to dogmatic beliefs without any evidence.

The original concept of Hindu Trinity of Gods, Brahma(Creator), Vishnu (Nourisher), Shiva (Destroyer) is lost. Vishnu needs Laxmi(Money) to nourish and sustain. Hence Laxmi is made as consort for Vishnu and given a Devi status. Now its all blind faith.

Hinduism is never a follower religion. Its a seeking religion just like Buddhism and Jainism. You can question and also make fun of or critique the work of God. No point in comparing to Middle Eastern religions. Their concept is totally different.

I agree with him. What he is saying is you can be wealthy without worshiping Laxmi. That is what Muslim's do.

World is made of asbab , worshiping God does not guarantee peace , money , health or power . The promise of Allah swt is for the hereafter , this is Islamic perspective
