BCB have done well to impose domestic teams to play a leggie in all domestic matches...

PCB should take a leaf out of their books and enforce this

we have way tooo many oldies fingre spinners dominationg the domestic teams...

and we dont have any leggie coming out of the domestic ....

M.Mohsin is one , Ibtisam another , Usama Mir... M.Irfan?

there was a couple of chinaman , this guy Mamoon KAshif and one other ...

they need to be forced to play

Sounds like a silly idea if I am being honest.

If anything needs to be forced, it should be that every team should have at least 3 guys from under 19 or something. I feel the domestic bullies dont allow teams to pick youngsters early enough.

DRS has meant that finger spinners have come back into the Test game in a big way and Unless a Leg Spinner is really good then he is not really worth picking because they will never offer the control a finger spinner can. But in ODI and T20 cricket Leg Spinners are still worth picking because they take wickets in the middle overs and with the field out, control isnt required to the same level.

Actually, that rule was imposed for a purpose and it’s quite good actually - people criticising it has little clue about cricket😝. We have so many SLAO spinner in every team and in general their quality is better, therefore unless Leggis are promoted, we’ll never produce leg spinner.

It’s about creating a diverse condition. Even in Internationals, PAK often used 4/5 left arm bowlers in playing XI, which is foolish - it’s about creating a balanced attack with diversity, not to pick best 5 bowlers. Cricket is a specialist game and one has to pick horses for courses to create best combinations. The rule is like batting picks by position - I see many PAK domestic teams picking top order batsman in playing XI and then slot them at 5-6 ... it’s not injustice if the 3rd opener is dropped for a middle order instead of accommodating him at 6 - he is competing for two openers spot, not with six batsmen’s spot. In soccer, many teams pick 2nd central back among left-footers, not necessarily has to be among top two CBs in squad.

Ideally, every FC team should have a SLAO spinner, an offie if they are picking 3 spinners; if two then the offie should miss out (provided all are of similar quality), and if one, the leggi. Already the supply line of leggi has gone down and offies are almost non existent.

A poor out of form leggie or a low quality leggie is a liability. Just look at Shadab Khan, Pakistan pick him assuming he will pick up wickets in the middle overs but instead he has been conceeding a lot of runs of late and has not been picking up wickets either. Pick quality bowlers regardless of whether they are right arm offspinners, right arm leg spinners, left arm china men bowlers, left arm spinners.

In fact Misbah should give instructions that every team should have atleast one off spinner, one right arm leg spinner, one left arm china men bowler and one left arm spinner in their squad of 16-20. It is then up to the team management to decide who deserves to play

I think the intention is good but not the forced execution. The focus should be to develop good/great spinners in general. An average legspinner is not better than an excellent offspinner or left hand orthodox. Going this route puts you at risk of ignoring other quality but different talents. It’s takes different types to make up a team.

I get the idea of wanting variety, but there is no point of playing a Leg spinner for the sake of it. The best players should be picked, regardless of what they bowl.

BCB did this because they have zero diversity amongst their spinners due to playing conditions. Almost all of them are orthodox fingerspinners and majority are SLA. Present pitch conditions everywhere in BD suit this type of bowling so there is no incentive to play more risky option of wrist spinner.

Don't think Pakistan need to force teams. Just take care of playing conditions and teams will automatically play talented enough wrist spinners.

I think, for PAK’s case, the word should be “encourage”, rather than impose. It’s true that the amount of SLAO spinner playing in PAK domestics is making it imbalanced. If I look at the top wicket takers in this year’s QEA, it’s dominated by SLAO spinners - Nauman, Gohar, Kashif, Irfan, Asghar, Zohiaib, Hasan Khan. And, couple are not in the list because they played few games - Imad, Babar. Compared to that, apart from Yasir there is hardly any leggis (Shadab is next and not that good), while offies are even rare. I don’t think it’s a balanced situation and there are few leggi lost already - Karamat Ali, Mansoor Amzad, Shahzaib, Usman Qadir .... don’t see Ibtesham either, two years after PSL debut.

szundercover - you have left the clue (why BCB is trying this) in your post. What you thought here is exactly what thousands of young cricketers must be thinking in BD now - I start bowling leggi seriously, might get into a team. That’s exactly what you need - youngsters take a particular skill seriously in numbers, few of them will excel in that trait - It doesn’t happen that you pick few kids and train them into a leg spinner.
