....was his first test hundred, against England in 1990.

India had been set about 410 to win and the young man ended up not 117 not out. Indeed, had here been one more session, it was concievable that he could have driven India to victory. His ability to hit Fraser and Malcolm for fours was uncanny. I remember the late Trevor Bailey saying over and over "He's seventeen...."

He took an amazing running catch in that series too, tearing 30 yards round the boundary at full speed, to take it in his fingertips and turn a six into a dismissal.

It was clear that someone really special had arrived.

Here is the catch.possibly the greatest catch when not involving a dive I've seen

Came right from the bondary, for a second, people would have thought this ballboy kid is crazy. :))

Ah, not nearly a six then - old memories can lie.

Still stunning, though.

Apart from the generally discussed innings of 2003 WC against Pakistan, or sharjah innings against Australia, one innings stand out for me and that was the 2008 C&B 2nd final. He got injured in the first final though he scored a century then, and so he was not allowed a runner in the 2nd final. He almost played on one leg in that match, 3s were converted into 2s, and 2s were converted into 1s bcoz he simply couldn't run. Yet, he scored a match winning 91 with an excellent strike rate, and in the end India won with reasonable ease. That to me was a very special inning.

Any innings where he scored a century and eventually helped India loose...my all time favorite memories and glad that he gave us a lot of those over the years against almost all countries:-)

My favourite looking back but not at the time was the 2003 Wc v Pakistan.

Funniest moment was the Ashley Giles stumping after the negative lines outside leg-stump.

That over where he tore apart Akhtar. Doing that kinda thing on that big a stage, in probably the most high pressure game of all time before Mohali'11 happened. Legendary.

When people mention tendulkar the first thing that comes to my mind is centurion 2003. Painful memories but what an innings it was.

The ton in Australia.. I think when Richie Benaud praised about his maturity.

That six off Akhtar in the World Cup has got to be up there.

A 94mph high bouncer outside off, and Sachin simply leant back and creamed it over the outfield and into the stands. The best Akhtar had to offer, and it was rendered insufficient in a single stroke.

If ever a shot decided a match.

I remember watching the desert storm match live as a kid. I still remember the break in the Indian innings due to the storm and when we came back out again the odds were against us.

In the first over after the break, the first 5 were dot balls. The last ball was a straight 6 and i remember the ball going against the wind direction. But it kept going.... Rest is history :D

My favorite memories of Sachin was in the 1990-2000 period when he was the only class batsman in Indian side. It was a one man army then and only Indians can explain the joy he provided us during that time.

Re: My favourite memory of Tendulkar

His Sharjah knocks were special

But he'd won me over with his 96 WC performances.

Re: My favourite memory of Tendulkar

Also him bowling Moin between his legs. Lol.

Chennai 100 vs Pakistan, still gives me shivers down my spine... It proved that he was a one man army, if his back held up he would've gotten us to victory..

But this was one spl knock too.. (The shot at 8 : 47)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMgOX1wanVI

Heck, they all are ... The guy is special :)

In the report of that match, Peter Roebuck called as the main feature of the day the confrontation between the old and the new. The new was the now long retired Brett Lee who was making his debut. The old was Tendulkar who was in his 11th year of Test cricket and this was his 22nd hundred !

My favourite and best memory of Tendy was scoring a ton on a hostile WACA pitch in 1992 where India were flogged and his more illustrious teammates like Sidhu, Manjrekar, Azhar etc folded like cheap suits against the OZ pace attack. I had seen him live in Sydney a couple of Tests earlier when he scored 140 odd. It was interesting because he's only a few years older than me and it made me think how I would have done had I been in his place (obviously been out for a duck lol!).

Another memory, not very pleasant, was of him scoring 248 at the SCG in 2004 which was the last Test I saw live in Australia before I moved to Boston. It was Day 2 when the OZ couldn't buy a wicket, I think we took two wickets for the whole day. It was a bit of a featherbed and we were missing Warne and McGrath and MacGill was humiliated by the chants of "Warnie" going around his home ground as he took none for 150 or something stupid. But what impressed me about Tendy was his discipline - they showed his wagonwheel on the big screen when he was on like 180 or something and he did not have a single shot though cover or point even though Gillespie and Lee kept bowling in that corridor to entice him to cut and nick the ball to the slips. Just the patience required to not cut the ball for hours and hours over 3 days of batting as he had been getting out to that shot was remarkable. There's very few people in cricket in todays T20 hit and giggle era who can display that kind of patience these days.

Thanks for the writeup. Good stuff to read from an Aussie perspective. :)
The advent of T20 league will only mean less patience in the hut and even lesser orthodox cricketers. I think that the fabric the tests made the batsmen weave might have been lost now. But that is for another thread to discuss.

This last ball of the day, superbly done.. And the jubilation + celebration after outfoxing a very handy batsman. The much spoken 'child like enthusiasm' of his even after being in the arena for a long long time is something i recall many a times.

Yes!that six is etched in the memory of indian fans forever!
He also played an on-drive of akhtar in that same over which was like the best on-drive ever!simply breath-taking!

Those Back to Back 100s against Australia in Sharjah was the best bit of batting for me...

Australia didnt lose to India... they were pathetic bunch of players anyway..
Aussies lost to One Man that day.. I've not seen Bradman play.. but i've seen those two innings,

Same for me. It was a sensation batting. I would have loved to watch it on ground. I also remember "He's seventeen...." spoken too many times during the match.

2 memories both involving Akhtar. The first was his uppercut to Shoaib for 6( the one that James mentioned) and the second is SRT's first ball duck at Eden Gardens against Shoaib.

Including 1992, 2003 & 2011 World Cup matches against Pak

when inzamam beat up a spectator & was about to be sent to jail following a complaint by that guy but tendulkar intervened to convince him into taking back his FIR. its canada & not any india or pak where inzy would´ve got away with it.

2nd is, when sidhu was about to open amir sohail´s skull following an onfield altercation but srt again intervened.

Those back to back 100s in Sharjah tower over any of his ODI knocks IMO..

What an innings they were!

Regret the incorrect dismissal of his. Umpire goofed up. SRT was basically going for a win from a near impossible situation, and was firing all cylinders by then. Would have been even more sweet had he taken the side over the line.

Definitely the 98 vs pakistan during our 03 Wc encounter and the Sharjah tons against OZ. In fact, i think most of his knocks in the 1996-1998 era were stunning.

If memory serves me right, wrong decisions were given in both of those innings.. I could be wrong though.

Yeah. I too remember the same.
He got a fair share of incorrect decisions going his way in his career. An ODI series in england once had atleast two incorrect outs given to him, while he was on 99/98 on both the occasions. Remarkably, his reaction to the incorrect dismissals been quite benign.

In tests - Steyn vs Tendulkar 2011, 3rd test in SA
Savin vs Warne - Chennai, 1998. Sachin scored 155 in 2nd innings
Cape Town 169, 1996/7

In ODIs - Centurion, Desert Storm

Cape Town 1997, he scored 169. That's the best innings I've seen from him. Even Allan Donald admitted that it was the best innings any batsman has played against him.

His knock vs Pakistan in the 1992 World Cup is criminally underrated!, he smashed an attack consisting of Wasim Akram, Imran Khan and Mushtaq Ahmed to all parts of the ground like it was nothing at the age of 19!!!! at an unreal S/R in those days which only the great Viv was capable of. I find it incredibly insulting when the feats of modern players are compared to such greatness.

The first match of cricket I have seen live was of Sachin scoring a double ton at Gwalior. I became his fan that instant, and later read all about his heroics and rued the fact that I missed some of his stellar performances.

Skying a floater from Saqlain to mid-off after a painstakingly heroic century at Chennai in 1999. The two dismissals at the Eden Gardens a couple of tests later are also particularly memorable.

Undoubtedly the best bat I have seen..

Those back to back hundreds at Sharjah vs Australia has to be the best moment without any shadow of doubt..

In tests, it has to be that 169 at Cape Town for me along with the 155 at Chennai vs Warne.
