Myth Breaker: This format will suss out the weak teams and only let through the best

What good fortune? There are no extra points for beating a top team in any WC.

You get 2 points for beating India. And you get the same 2 points for beating Afghanistan.

You're grasping at straws.
In that case so are most of the pundits with whom my opinions coincide.
There has been many healthy debates around the shortcomings of deciding placings based on NRR because in most of their minds the best 4 teams have not progressed to the KO round.
These pundits are neutral and want the best for this and future tournaments - they are not biased like me or you.

The format was perfect... loved it .... only thing that could be done better was have 16 teams and have a super 8 format...

Pakistan were extremly unlcuky, and NZ daam lucky... their rained out game was against the strong team, ours was against a weak (not saying we would have won and NZ would have lost but on facts thats wat it is)

Also, out team spirit was crap and shameful at the beginning .. when NZ were 85/5, their batsmen dug in and took their team to a respectable total. similarly, when we were almost down and out (believe me i was there in the stadium and it was a pressure cooker for us, think how it would be for the players) against pak, we had Wahab, Imad and Shadab playing like true professionals and saving the game. This was completly missing initially and 2 main culprits were SHOAIB MALIK and HASSAN ALI. their presence in the ground was a negative impact... malik was shameful in the field, garbage at the crease and a shame of a player

Hassan Ali was the only 1 i think who got out playing a guking stupid shot against WI... with Hafeez on the other end, he should have stayed on the crease and try to eat as much overs as possible. if we have managed to take score beyond 150, i think WI could have panicked, or even taken 30/35 + overs to get there and it wouldnt have hurt us that badly ...

so No the format was perfect, NZ would have been eliminated, had pakistan went into the tournament with the same team, passion and professionalism as they ended it ,...

That's a good suggestion but with 16 teams there would have been a lot of meaningless matches
Quarterfinals are a must. We love knockouts

I understand how NRR works perfectly.
My point is that it’s more difficult to up NRR in low scoring matches especially when the oppo has first use of a pitch that will become more difficult to bat second time round.
In this case, Pakistan could have been more courageous and gone hell for leather and won games against New Zealand & Afghanistan with 10 overs to spare - in reality with that mindset they could also have ended up losing both games.
Especially against Afghanistan they needed a pitch similar to what England got against them when Morgan took their bowlers for 17 sixes, and their strong spin bowlers took a collective hammering.

Yeah well that's the risk you have to take when you lose a match in 13 overs.

Pakistan has nobody to blame but themselves. Nobody asked them to get bowled out for 105 to a team that lost to everyone else except Pakistan and Afghanistan.

NZ is in the semis because they got 1 point from the top 2 teams for free. Now you can debate which team was better Pak or Nz but that is subjective. NZ team performed at a consistent level so lost too better teams but won against weaker teams. Where as Pakistan was inconsistent they were able to beat England but lost to WI. I personally enjoyed this format and I think should be persisted with in the future with a few tweaks for rain/head to head results. NZ got through with the rules they were given so they deserve to be there. Now I am hoping for NZ vs Eng final so we see a new world cup winner as Ind and Aus have won the last 5 between them.

The Rain Giveth And The Rain Taketh Away
What rain gave in 1992 rain took away in 2019.

If it was not for rain in 1992...Pakistan would have never reached semis

Pakistan captain and team is back home comfortably, enjoying Niharis and Burgers, as it eventually got respectable 11 points, not 2-4 (Sarfaraz words, not mind).

If the team had gone hell for leather in the last few matches and lost to, say AFG or/and BD, imagine how PPers and people back home would have treated the team.

These guys and Sarfaraz saved their behinds and got a better rank than expected.

Not satisfactory result for PPers but a professional job done by a team that was not likely to win the cup/

I have noticed alot of our indian brothers enjoying putting the pak team down, saying we were not good enough to qualify, and mocking pak fans, saying we are deluded in thinking the pak team were extremely UNLUCKY not to qualify for the semis!

So who is right?

Lets take an independent, highly respected worldwide media group and see what is their opinion.
The bbc states:-
However, the biggest baddie in this World Cup has been the British weather, which caused four abandonments in the space of a week.

That more rained-off games than at any previous tournament - and Pakistan can rightly feel that the loss of the chance to play Sri Lanka cost them a shot at the semi-finals."

So to all our indian brothers, please stop trolling!

How do you know that we would have lost the game against england in the group stage of the 1992 world cup?
Nobody knows what the outcome of that game would have been!!
You are just making an assumption, that england would have won, if it had not rained!!
The same england team that lost to pak in the final!!
The only thing that can be said in certainty, is pak has now been deprived of playing 2 games in the world cup, one in 1992 and one in this world cup, due to the rain!!
Pakistan has truly been unlucky as far as weather is concerned, in world cups!!!

NZ have been incredibly lucky that despite losing 3 matches in a row in a pathetic manner and one certain loss saved by rain, they still made the semis.

India, Australia, England, and Pakistan were definitely the 4 best teams in this world cup.

Pakistan vs South Africa game was also affected by rain in 1992.

Had rain not arrived, Pakistan would be chasing 212 in 50 overs instead of 194 in 36 overs. The current DLS system would have set the target of 162.

It is not wrong to say that if Pakistan benefitted from rain against England, it evened out by the rain in SA game.

There is nothing wrong with the format. Pak were just not good enough to make the semis. We are a flawed team and need to work on those flaws to be considered a top team. At the moment, we are a middle-tier team and that's it, no excuses.

Rain ruined the format. If all games had happened without rain interruption we probably would have seen a different set of semi finalists.

New Zealand look like the worst 4th ranked team in the history of cricket
