KIMBERLEY: The third instalment of South Africa’s premier T20 competition officially got underway when the 2021/22 Mzansi Super League (MSL) mini draft was held in Kimberley today following the conclusion of the CSA T20 Knock Out Competition final.

The MSL makes its long-awaited return after the tournament was postponed in 2020 due to national and international logistical reasons caused by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The draft featured over 100 cricketers from Division Two sides, with only 16 players chosen to join the eight Division One teams that will be battling it out for the MSL 3.0 title when the first ball is bowled between 07-28 February 2022.

Under the new South African domestic structure, the top division teams, namely North West Dragons, ITEC Knights, GbetsRocks, Six Gun Grill Western Province as well as Momentum Multiply Titans, Imperial Lions, Hollywoodbets Dolphins, and the Gbets Warriors form part of the country’s elite professional setups.

So, it’s only fitting that these teams, in addition to the Proteas and overseas player quality still to come, will be the ones who take to the field during next year’s four-week T20 cricket extravaganza with added local flavour.

The 16 players were split evenly across the eight teams, with only two standout second division players drafted into each MSL side to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best.

Cameron Delport, who has an extensive record of playing in T20 leagues around the world, headlined the mini draft with the Knights picking up the left-hander as a third pick in the first round. The breakout star from the CSA T20 Knock Out Competition, Herschell America, who is aptly nicknamed ‘Captain America’ will be showing off his latest dance moves in the shirt of new Division One side, the Dragons.

Jerry Nqolo’s recent performances for the Eastern Cape Iinyathi earned him a nod for the Warriors, while the big hitting Marco Marais will don the Sky Blue of the Titans.

CSA Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith emphasised the importance of hosting the premier T20 event and the inclusion of more players down the domestic structures.

“What a time to be an up and coming and ambitious cricketer in South Africa,” Smith began.

“We just witnessed it with the CSA T20 Knock Out Competition, where rising stars took huge leaps towards making a name for themselves in professional cricket. We believe the MSL and its inclusion of second division players will certainly provide our rising stars with another platform to showcase their skills, alongside and against some of the game’s very best,” concluded Smith.

“This is an exciting time, for not only our cricketers but for every fan out there as we finally welcome back the long-awaited thrill-a-minute Mzansi Super League,” said Pholetsi Moseki, Acting CSA Chief Executive Officer.

“The Mzansi Super League was one of the many casualties of the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are however pleased to be able to confirm the kickstarting of MSL 3.0 with this mini draft. This is a clear indication of the progression being made towards hosting a memorable festival of big hits and flashing stumps across the country next year, in front of supporters.

“Congratulations to this evening’s drafted players, all the best to them, the teams and coaches involved. This herald the first step towards nail-biting action that is soon to get underway,” Moseki added.

ADRIAN Birrell, The Rocks coach, expressed his delight with the acquisition of Onke Nyaku and Jurie Snyman for the Mzansi Super League.

The services of the players were secured following the Mzansi Super League draft on Friday. The draft was held in accordance with Cricket South Africa’s regulations.

Each of the eight Division One teams participating in the Mzansi Super League is required to sign two Division Two players for the series which starts during February next year.

Birrell regards both Onke Nyaku and Jurie Snyman as two of the country’s most talented all-rounders.

“Both players are good bowlers and useful batsmen in this format. Added to this Snyman is a left-handed batsman. I’m certainly delighted. The draw went according to our plans,” said Birrell.

Onke Nyaku played for the South Western Districts in the recently completed Provincial T20 Knockout Challenge and took 4 wickets in three-inning with his medium pace deliveries.

Jurie Snyman did duty for Easterns in the series and excelled with both bat and ball. He scored 88 runs while taking 5 wickets with his off-break deliveries.

Despite the tournament having secured an official backer (sponsor), CSA can confirm that the Mzansi Super League (MSL) scheduled for February 2022 has been called off owing to the COVID 19 environment which has made it difficult to maintain the brand proposition of being the premium international T20 tournament, due to increased travel restrictions as imposed by many nations on South Africa since the discovery of Omicron variant of the virus.

The MSL was conceptualised as the premium global T20 competition to rival the likes of Indian Premier League (IPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Big Bash League (BBL); to name a few. This was done to create a commercial vehicle to attract global and local sponsors as well as to drive interest in cricket amongst non-cricket fans in South Africa. However, restrictions such as stricter travel possibilities, the Bio-Secure Environment frustrations, fear of the new variant, and the weak Rand/US Dollar exchange rate are some of the main reasons why CSA has taken the decision to call off the 2022 version of the MSL.

This is the second edition to be cancelled, as the 2020 edition was also cancelled due to Covid-19 logistical challenges.

Said Pholetsi Moseki, Acting Chief Executive Officer at Cricket South Africa, “The decision to cancel the 2021 edition of the MSL is meant to allow CSA and its strategic partners to revamp and review the tournament post-Covid-19 to regain its market and commercial position. For its purposes, the MSL slot will again be replaced by a domestic CSA T20 Challenge, featuring the 8 (eight) Division 1 teams and this tournament will take place in February 2022.”

Well CSA will have to pull all stops to make the Indian tour complete else they will go bankrupt.

There won't be any spectators at the tests which is a shame.

I really do hope India do go ahead and tour because as you quite rightly say CSA will likely go bankrupt without this tour.

Lots of credit must go to India if they fulfil their obligation because it would be quite easy for them to back out given the circumstances.

This is such a bad news.

Financially (for CSA) and also for the fans around the world :|

Tough times for cricket!

yeah i hope players from both sides read the situation and try to minimise outside contact.
Indians are staying in a resort with wide spaces with multiple lakes and what not..
So that is a good from their perspective as well.
