International cricket match fixers and ex-player jailed

An ex-professional Pakistani cricketer and two others have today been jailed for a total of 7.25 years for bribing cricketers to fix elements of international matches.

Nasir Jamshaid custody shotEx-player Nasir Jamshaid, aged 33, from Oldbury, and British nationals Yousaf Anwar, aged 36, from Hayes, and Mohammad Ijaz, aged 34, from Sheffield, all admitted their roles in the conspiracy following a covert investigation by the National Crime Agency.

Today at Manchester Crown Court, Jamshaid, Anwar and Ijaz were sentenced to 17 months, 3 years and 4 months, and 2 years and 6 months respectively.

Using an undercover officer, NCA investigators identified that the group were plotting to fix elements of the 2016 Bangladesh Premier League T20 tournament which Jamshaid was due to play in.

Anwar and Ijaz developed a system by which they would identify a professional player willing to partake in an agreed fix, and the player would signal at the start of the match to confirm the fix was on.

Typically, they would charge £30,000 per fix with half of that going to the player.

Yousaf Anwar custody shotThe following year, the three men made further plans to fix Pakistan Super League matches being played in Dubai. In February 2017 Anwar flew out to Dubai to meet with other professional players, including Islamabad United teammates Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan, who agreed to play their part in corrupting elements of a game.

Before flying out to join them Anwar was captured on CCTV purchasing 28 different coloured cricket bat handle grips from a wholesalers in St Albans where he gave Ijaz’s name and address for the receipt. These would subsequently be used by the players as the signal to show the fix was going ahead.

The PSL fixture between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi was played in Dubai on 9 February 2017. Despite Latif originally agreeing to the fix, it was Khan who entered the crease almost five hours into the game displaying the pre-agreed signal.

Khan then carried out the fix, playing two dot balls in the first two balls of the second over, before getting out leg before wicket (LBW) for 0 in the third ball of the over.

On 13 February Jamshed was arrested by NCA officers at his home in Birmingham, and Anwar was arrested at Heathrow Airport after flying back from Dubai. Ijaz was detained at his home in Sheffield ten days later.

Jamshaid, Latif, Khan, and a fourth player, Mohammed Irfan, were all suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board following subsequent tribunal hearings.

Ian McConnell, NCA Senior Investigating Officer, said:

“These men abused their privileged access to professional, international cricket to corrupt games, eroding public confidence for their own financial gain.

“I would like the thank the England and Wales Cricket Board, International Cricket Council, Gambling Commission and Pakistan Cricket Board for their ongoing support throughout this investigation.

“Tackling corruption and bribery in its various forms is a priority for the National Crime Agency. We will vigorously pursue those involved, and target their illicit profits which are so often used to fund further criminality.”

What a loser. I heard he was playing in the desi leagues last year around the Midlands and cut a sad figure amongst the taxi drivers.

So she is hinting that he has lost his daughter. Story over.

Any brainless imbecile who believes that he can spot fix and get away with it in today’s world deserves to be in jail.

County cricket. No chance.

The poor guy was struggling even in club cricket in the UK.

Another one of the fake age brigade. He played at Old Elizabethians a Worcester club and hardly uprooted any trees relative to what was expected.

Kuddos to his wife. First time i have seen a family member in this scenario not play the blame game, conspiracy theories

I'm extremely disappointed with the hero of the 2012-13 series win in India - the last time Pakistan engaged in a series with our mates across the border.

He's let himself down.
He's let his family down.
He's let the country down.
He's let his fans at pakpassion down.
But perhaps most significantly:
He's let the game down that he loved.

Such a shame.
Such a fall from grace.

Salman Butt
Mo Amir
Mo Aseef
Danish Kaneria
Khalid Latif
Hasan Raza
Sharjeel Khan
And now him.

Big mistake to give Mo Amir a 2nd chance in 2016 when Pakistan were ranked no2 Test side in the world without him. I blame Waqar Younis and Shahryar Khan. Just because we got beaten 3-1 in an ODI series vs England and 3-0 in a T20 series while he was taking wickets in the BPL. In the proper cricket format we were doing so well at the same point. Didn't need him one bit. Corruption has no place in our great game.

There goes the theory among some PPers that it was all a conspiracy launched by PCB and its then head Sethi.

His wife sounds like a mature and intelligent woman who understands that her husband was wrong and should have never done what he has done. Most of the typical desi families would have blamed it on the ICC or the BCCI for conspiring against Pakistan.

On topic, he totally deserves this punishment.

Jailing all three men at Manchester Crown Court on Friday, Judge Richard Mansell QC said the fixers, Anwar and Ijaz, both from Sheffield, had engaged in "sophisticated and organised criminal activity" while Jamshaid was "vulnerable to succumbing to the temptation of financial reward".

Judge Mansell said: "Corruption of this kind has sadly been taking place in the game of cricket for a very long time. If anything it has become worse due to the proliferation in the last decade of hugely popular televised international T20 tournaments in all the major cricketing nations, combined with a huge increase in online gambling.

"What makes cricket, and specifically these T20 tournaments in Bangledesh, Pakistan and India, so vulnerable to corrupt practices, is the existence of a huge, largely unregulated online betting industry in the Indian sub-continent."

Players not earning huge sums of money were prone to temptation while the corrupt practice also affected legitimate betting markets and honest punters, he said.

"However, by far the most insidious consequence of these offences is the undermining of public confidence in the integrity of the sporting contest, not simply in the individual match directly affected but in the game of cricket generally," he added.

Not sure if he had conned her too, but it wasn't that long ago she was shouting at the media that Nasir was innocent.

They will find a way to put a new spin on this and defend Saint Sharjeel.

Fixing is corruption in any form. We must put an end to corruption in Pakistan. We still have many out there who have corruption on their hands. Sharjeel and nobody else should get off scott free. I sure you will agree :)

Not sure about the wife..lets say she was after a Pakistan cricketer as a husband. She will kick him on the kerb now and wont go by the 'Stand by your Man' mantra.

I'm sure not too far into the future we will be talking about the next Pakistani player caught fixing.

A strong woman! Great message to all budding cricketers....

Also it sounds that she is/has separated from her husband. Sad but an understandable fall-out from the messy saga.

No, fixing in cricket is different from corruption in politics and bureaucracy, which is often necessary and unavoidable, since it keeps the system running.

I won’t comment on this further so that the thread doesn’t get derailed, but I am happy to expand on it in the time pass section.

What is it with dashing Pakistani opening batsmen and fixing?

I was a big Nasir fan . Such a shame . I remember when he was called last minute for 2015 World Cup , I was delighted , felt that he could make a great impact . But sadly he was a shadow of the player he was only 2 years prior to that in 2012-13.
Tragic but it’s a personal choice he made . He now has to live with this .

Lure of the quick Dollar - he wont be the last one to do this.

I met him in 2016 & frankly speaking the guy came across as an absolute lallu “low IQ” I mean seriously low IQ , don’t know how he managed to play cricket at the highest level & because a fixer too ‘ I guess he was a born with it but unfortunately didn’t utilise it .. his tons in India were epic.. what a shame

It's his own fault. You've got to be the dumbest of the dumb to throw everything away with the salary he was on. I've said this before but will say it again we must blacklist corrupt players i.e. no more Amir, Sharjeel, Nasir, Umar Akmal (not corrupt but just a *****) and many others. The problem is PCB keeps giving chances to the corrupt and not to the hard workers who play their hearts out at domestic level.

May Allah ease the pain for his family.

Initially when reports of his involvement in the fixing scandal came in 2017, his wife was supporting him. I remember she was fighting with other people on the Twitter. Maybe he had lied to her as well.
As far as Nasir Jamshed is concerned, once he was caught red-handed while cheating in 9th class exams, which shows the guy has very low IQ level.

Why did he, Danish, Khalid Latif & Sharjeel not learn from 2010 fixing saga?. Simply Pathetic.

When will these idiots learn. Such a talent gone to waste. Btw he ain’t 33, he’s at least 38

Indeed, was also threatening to sue people too.

Humble pie now I guess.

Pakistan international cricketer Nasir Jamshaid was jailed on Friday for 17 months after he admitted conspiring to bribe fellow players to spot-fix at a Twenty20 match in Dubai in February 2017.

The court heard the 33-year-old's fall from grace was "equally dramatic as his stellar rise".

He made his debut for his country at U19 level in 2006, made his first-class debut the same year and his full international debut against Zimbabwe two years later.

Jamshaid went on to represent his country more than 60 times, mainly in one-day and Twenty20 internationals.

His barrister, James Pickup QC, told Manchester Crown Court: "He had a stellar rise but his fall from grace has been equally dramatic and for that there is only one person to blame and that is Nasir Jamshaid himself."

When arrested, he was living in the UK with his doctor wife, a GP in Stourbridge, and had a spouse visa.

Jamshaid, of High Street, Walsall, had briefly met fixer Yousef Anwar, 36, during the Champions Trophy in England in 2011 but had no further contact with him until 2016 when he was playing in the Bangladesh Premier League.

He was approached to score no runs off the first two balls of an over, said Mr Pickup, before months later he "foolishly succumbed" to helping arrange another player to carry out a similar spot-fix in the Pakistan Super League.

Mr Pickup said Jamshaid, who had no previous convictions, was under financial pressure at the time as he needed to fund monthly care costs of £1,000 for his father who was in a coma in Pakistan following a road accident.

He ended up making no financial gain from his promised share of a £30,000 fee.

As well as being tracked by an undercover officer from the National Crime Agency, the International Cricket Council had also received intelligence a fix was due to take place and arrests were promptly made after the Dubai match.

Since his arrest and his subsequent 10-year ban from cricket, Jamshaid had been "vilified" in Pakistan, the barrister said, but he had since co-operated with the authorities and had shown remorse.

The court heard he had been privately coaching youngsters in the Worcestershire and Warwickshire area which he had enjoyed because he felt he was putting something back into the game.

Mr Pickup said: "What he hopes is that by giving assistance to the Pakistan Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council and by involving himself with their ongoing educational programmes he can perhaps persuade the Pakistan Cricket Board in future to look again at the 10-year ban."

He said his client wanted to try and put things right by ensuring other young cricketers did not go down the same path and to demonstrate the consequences to the extended family.

Jamshaid's wife and their four-year-old daughter had been subjected to abuse on social media, the court heard.

Sadly people keep doing it because 99% get away with it.

You know as well as I do that there are well-known Pakistanis who are feted as heroes with clean hands in spite of doing this themselves. And no, I don’t mean any of the Qayyum guilty men.

Good on the wife not to back him up. The guy deserves everything he got here.

More players got away scot-free than this fellow. Cronje was killed in an accident but he was more "eligible". Among those in India who got away were azhar, prabhakar, mongia (known offenders)..hope such punishments are given in India too....but fixing is so prevalent..it is into football (most played and richest game), tennis (among the most money spinning too) etc...anti corruption units and constant counselling right from U19 level should be there to educate the players about the distractions that could end one's career.

Good on the wife not to back him up. The guy deserves everything he got here.

She had to change her tune.

Previously she has been arguing with allcomers that he was innocent, framed and threatening legal action.

Sad. I think he was our most talented opener since Anwar, even more than Sharjeel. Seeing those innings vs Australia and in India he was so authoritative, when everyone else was struggling. Though of course was just plain poor after mid 2013, he just completely lost it.

I felt sorry for the trio when they got jailed, but not sure I really feel that sorry anymore. It's basically theft, and a year/17 months isn't exactly a long sentence. I think all fixers should receive life bans, however given that Jamshed is washed up, you won't see PCB coming to his aid trying to get him back into cricket.

It's funny, the man actually went to jail for cheating on exams at school. I guess he didn't learn.

Exactly Saj mate.

A few tweets from her in the past:

The pcb can frame nasir all they want to protect their current players but they forget there is a bigger court of law.. Allah knows all.. on 17th May 2017

Legal action will be taken against this channel for reporting this maligning and completely false news on 11th Feb 2017

As they say in Punjabi "Hoon das" ....

On a more serious note, you feel for her.

Married him in 2014 after he was man of the series in India the previous year.

She was a lover of cricket. A club cricketer herself.

Comes across as a hard working medical professional and mother.

So sad to see her life turned upside down due to the extra curricular activities of her partner.

We wish her well.

How long was Amir in jail for?

He was released from Portland Young Offenders Institution in Dorset after serving half of a six-month sentence for his part in a spot-fixing scam (1st Feb 2012)

Slightly off topic.

But good to see you still going strong MIG.

You are like the Mohammad Hafeez of pakpassion, a long career.

I've logged in after a long time.

I guess the love for the game never dies.

Great to see.

Hope you and the family are well.

Hope to post more regularly on here assuming work commitments allow.

Good to be back and interacting with all the great users on here over the last few days. And great to see cricket back in our homeland. More of the same I say.

Got away scott free. I don't know why he wasn't given a much longer sentence like Jamshed.

Its just gonna make everyone else still point fingers at the Pakistan team as the cheaters and fixers. Even though other players from other teams have been caught in the past or been involved in some shape or form.

The evil of fixing still lingers in the air, so sad.

Nasir Jamshed who will be releasing from jail in the UK in the coming days would likely face the prospect of deportation to Pakistan.

The former Pakistan batsman was sentenced to 17 months in prison in February for his involvement in spot-fixing plans in Bangladesh Premier League T20 and Pakistan Super League. He was also banned from cricket for ten years by an anti-corruption tribunal and is due for release on October 21.

However, despite having a wife and daughter in Birmingham, he could face the prospect of deportation back to Pakistan.

Jamshed’s wife, Dr Samara Afzal, wrote on Twitter: “Today is the most difficult day of my life … I’ve felt the need to write this in the hope that others learn from Nasir’s mistakes.”

“Nasir could have had a bright future, had he worked hard and been committed to the sport than gave him so much, but he took a short cut and lost everything, his career, status, respect, and freedom,” Samara added.

“He would have got UK nationality and played county cricket, and he threw his chance away. He would do anything to turn the clock back and not lose everything. I hope all cricketers look at his example as a deterrent against corruption.”

Before the trial, Jamshed was in the UK on a spousal visa which was due for renewal in February 2019. But, with a court date impending, it was decided to put off a renewal decision until the case was decided.

“By far the most insidious consequence of these offences is the undermining of public confidence in the integrity of the sporting contest, not simply in the individual match directly affected but in the game of cricket generally,” Judge Richard Mansell QC said during their sentencing at Manchester Crown Court.

He has now received a notification to deport and has been told he would be further detained. He is appealing the decision and will apply for bail on October 21.

Jamshed is likely to learn of his immediate fate next week. It remains possible he could be deported immediately and expected to fight the decision from Pakistan.

So the hero of the Aane Do series spent some tail in jail.

The only positive out of this is that fans aren't asking for his return, unlike Amir or Sharjeel.

Embarrassing state of affairs. I believe he was also once locked up in a Pakistan jail on charges of cheating or something?

This is beyond embarrassing and disgusts me. We are a country where fraudsters and looters roam freely and justice is not served and Nasir Jamshed is a product of this.

County cricket? No chance. Nasir Jamshed was struggling to make runs in club cricket! Let's hope we never see him near professional cricket again. We need to clean up our act and distance ourselves from the likes of Amir, Asif, Butt, Khalid, Sharjeel and Jamshed.

They should face lifetime bans and massive fines otherwise it will keep happening

But few days ago you wanted Sharjeel Khan back in Pakistan squad.

Yes defo if amir was given life time bans then everyone after should get lifetime bans because he didnt everyone else after should be allowed back in like amir has.once they make it lifetime bans then that should be with everyone no matter how talented they are

In some distant alternate reality in the 8th dimension, Pakistan's version of Sharma-Dhawan-Kohli is Jamshed-Shehzad-U.Akmal.

I thought Jamshed was on his way to superstardom after the Aane Do series. To say that he's fallen from grace would be an understatement, to say the least.

He never really played much of an impact knock from 2013 onwards. He was at his best in 2012 but that's about it. Blame it on a lack of hard work, drive, mental toughness, lazy attitude towards his game and fitness.

I don't want to insult any player but bro to be honest, Jamshed had a great start but got found out soon with his inability to handle short ball. Kambli, Raina had similar issues. Raina found a slot at no. 6 where if you have such technical flaw, you can survive. In last 15-20 overs bowlers are mostly bowling full length deliveries. Jamshed was an opener so he was targeted with short pitch bowling. I remember WC15 where he was a sitting duck on Aus pitches. Maybe he should have tried batting at no. 4-5 for Pakistan. I think he could have played more.

According to reports, the Home Office will not allow Nasir to be released from custody despite completing a 17-month imprisonment sentence for accepting bribes to fix Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches

According to reports:

Nasir Jamshed has appealed to UK Home Office against his deportation from the country as his jail sentence has been extended.

According to his spouse Dr Samara Afzal, Jamshed will remain in jail despite the expiration of his sentence on October 21.

As per England law, a non-citizen is not allowed to stay if their sentence exceeds more than 12 months. While his own sentence was of 17 months, he was able to stay on the basis of a spousal visa.

However, a longer sentence could see him deported and potentially plead his case in Pakistan.

In a bid to remain in England, he has also applied for an immigration bail through his lawyer.

Must be enjoying jail food so much, that he wants to extend his time in jail.

What a waste.

What must his Dr wife be thinking? Being a Doctor in the UK and to be married to this? Did she not have better prospects than a Pakistani Cricketer with uncertain prospects who was using her to get UK nationality?

every time I hear his name it reminds me of the aane do series .. what a shame but it was bound to happen , am no genius but having spent 20 min talking to him a few years back I was surprised by his lack of IQ , all he had was sheer natural talent & NOTHING else , a bit of honest hard work would’ve made him a real star but...

I don't think IQ has anything to do it. I met Salman Butt with my father in Delhi. He came across as a smart educated guy. It doesn't really matter. Some people will find a way to cheat if they have to.

Not sure about this.

She was extremely arrogant and smug about her husband until he got locked up. Seems to be an attention seeker.

Also recall her threatening legal action and claiming her husband only speaks to players as he supplies them with bats 😂

That was after she finally woke up and had to admit the reality.

Before that, she was threatening to sue people who were reporting facts about her husband.
