National Men’s U19 tournaments to begin on Tuesday

• Three-day matches will be followed by One-Day Cup matches; 18 teams of 16 regions will participate over 61 days

Lahore, 9 September 2024:

The National Men’s U19 three-day Championship and One-Day Cup are set to begin on Tuesday, 10 September. Each round of the three-day games will be followed by the One-Day games. As such, a total of 98 matches each will be played over a 61-day period.

Eighteen teams of 16 regions will participate in the tournament, whose one-day final will be held on 22 October and the three-day final from 6-9 November. Venues of the final will be announced in due course.

The 18 regional teams will be equally divided into three groups with the matches to be played on a single-league basis till 12 October. The next phase will include one-day matches between three group toppers on a single-league from 16-22 October, followed by three-day matches between the group toppers again on a single-league basis from 25 October to 9 November.

Peshawar will defend the three-day title, while Karachi Whites are the reigning one-day champions.

The squads have been selected following the Regional Inter-District U19 Tournament from 23 May to 10 June in which 104 district sides had participated.

The National Men’s U19 Championship and Cup is expected to provide the budding and emerging teenagers to prove their mettle and stake a claim in the Pakistan U19 team for the upcoming tri-nation 50-over series in November in UAE, which will be followed by the ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup 2024.

Groups:

Group A (matches in Karachi): FATA, Islamabad, Karachi Whites, Larkana, Multan and Quetta regions

Group B (matches in Abbottabad, Charsada, Peshawar and Risalpur): Abbottabad, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Karachi Blues, Lahore Blues and Rawalpindi regions

Group C (matches in Faisalabad, Sargodha and Sheikhupura): Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Dera Murad Jamali (DM Jamali), Hyderabad, Lahore Whites, Peshawar and Sialkot regions

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended its national junior championship “due to unavoidable circumstances” after the event began on Tuesday with three-day games across venues

The U-19 age group tournament started on schedule but the postponement orders were conveyed to the teams and officials after the first day’s play, leaving them surprised.

In a short press release, hours after the announcement, the PCB said the decision was taken “due to unavoidable circumstances.” No detailed explanation was given for this abrupt decision, especially after the board had spent millions of rupees on preparing the 18 regional teams.

An insider in the board said that the indefinite postponement had something to do with the number of complaints chairman Mohsin Naqvi had received about issues in selection of teams and also about over-age players and fake documentation.

Although the board conducts wrist bone X-rays and has stringent rules for submission of documents for the U-19 tournaments, still every year there are cases and allegations of wrongdoing in selection of players and authenticity of their age.

“The junior tournament is considered the backbone for producing the right talent for first class cricket and international exposure by the board which is why despite a long process of selection, Mohsin Naqvi was disturbed when he received a number of complaints, some of which were authenticated to be correct,” the insider said.

The PCB had spent money on setting up training camps for all 18 teams, while also providing them meals, accommodation and transport besides kits and daily allowances.

The teams were to play a one-day match after a day’s break following the close of the three-day matches.

The selection was carried out by regional coaches who were appointed by the PCB, while the selection panel also included the board’s representative and president of the said region.

The PCB has also postponed the national women’s U-19 tournament, which was to start from September 16.

Good thing to post pone the tournament instead of playing it with over age and undeserving players.

It shows that Mohsin Naqvi is genuinely interested in the betterment of Pak cricket otherwise he just could have brushed it under the carpet and let the tournament get completed.
