Teenagers compete for PKR2.5million National U19 Three-Day Tournament from Thursday

• Lahore, Muridke and Sheikhupura host the single-league tournament which runs from 5 November till 29 November

Lahore, 4 November 2020:

After an exciting one-day tournament, U19 cricketers from the six Cricket Associations begin their quest for the National U19 Three-Day Tournament trophy from Thursday, 5 November. The event, which serves as another opportunity for these players to showcase their talents, will be played across Lahore, Muridke and Sheikhupura.

Sindh who successfully defended the one-day title on Monday afternoon at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, will be also eyeing to defend the three-day title with PKR1.5million on offer as a winning prize. The runner-up will bag PKR750,000.

The players will have the incentive to bring out their best performances as the tournament’s top performers – best player, best batsman, best bowler and best wicketkeeper – will receive PKR50,000 each. The player of the final will be awarded PKR25,000.

This year’s tournament will be played on a single-league basis and the top two teams at the end of the league stage will compete in the final – a four-day affair - that will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium from 26 November.

The captains of the six teams are keenly looking forward to the event which will provide them and their teammates a great opportunity of proving their temperament and skills for the longer formats of the game.

Balochistan U19 captain Mohammad Ibrahim Snr: “We would aim to improve on our performance in the one-day tournament. The red-ball format is really exciting and provides a great chance to the players to prove their mettle. We have a talented pool of players who can perform well in the longer format; the three-day tournament will provide good competition and exposure to the players.”

Central Punjab U19 captain Mohammad Huraira: “Three-day cricket is all about patience and adapting to the situation. Both batsmen and bowlers need to stay patient to earn success in the longer format of the game. We have a balanced squad that has the potential of winning the title. We look forward to delivering to the best of our ability in the tournament.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa U19 captain Abbas Ali: “We are excited about the tournament as it provides another golden opportunity to all squad members to prove their abilities and credentials. The longer format allows the batsmen to take their time and settle at the crease. We hope to occupy the crease for long periods and score runs. We also need to improve our fielding and ensure that we don’t repeat the mistakes we made in the one-day event.”

Northern U19 captain Mohammad Raza-ul-Mustafa: “We have a good combination that is backed by a very strong coaching staff that is working very hard. Our aim is to minimise our mistakes and make the most of the opportunity that we have in the three-day format. This tournament will be competitive with all six teams trying their best to lift the trophy. We firmly believe our team has a good chance of winning and we will do our best.”

Sindh U19 captain Saim Ayub: “Our aim would be to adjust to the longer format as quickly as we can. We have a very capable and talented squad and we would aim to perform to our best at any given situation. We want to retain our title after our success in the one-day format; I will fully back the team as a leader with an aim of leading from the front with my own performances.”

Southern Punjab U19 captain Mohammad Shehzad: “We look forward to doing well in the three-day format. The tournament provides a great opportunity to all our players. We want to express ourselves and play to the best of our ability with an aim of lifting the trophy. It should be an exciting tournament.”

Mubasir Khan again looking a class apart.

Aaliyan Mehmood 4 wickets but very very expensive compared to other bowlers (30 runs in 16 on average) while he went for 70 runs in 20.

Adeel Meo 3 wickets but very economical.

Huraira and Mohammad Waqas (who I had earlier included in my potential U-19 team based on the one day tournament) continuing to impress massively.

Saim Ayub did not bat at all with 6-7 wickets down for Sindh, worried if he may be injured.

Ghazi Ghouri (Sindh) continues to be the only wicket keeper batsman who knows how to make runs. Hope he can keep decently as well.

The charts were dominated by spinners but one fast bowler stood out. Zeeshan Zameer, RAMF from Sindh with 19 wickets in 10 games at an average of 17. Looks around 6ft, not sure about exact height.

In the below video he is bowling at 13:00 onwards.

Other bowlers who have done well:

Aurangzaib, RAMF Balochistan, 16 wickets in 10 games at 20.5 average. No video available.

Muneeb Wasif, RAMF Central Punjab, 14 wickets in 9 games at 21.5 average. Video:

Ahmed Khan, RAMF KPK, 12 wickets in 10 games at 20.1 average and bats as well. Video:

If you’re really obsessed with height, there’s this guy 6’6” RAMF from Sindh, Asim Ali. 6 wickets in 4 games at 19.3 average.

Plus point for ahmed is batting, otherwise his statistics as fast bowler are 4th or 5th best fast bowler.

Muneeb looks the tallest from all of them, and has a good in swinger. I want to see if he can replicate performances in 3 day.

SLAO bowler from Sindh. 4th highest wicket taker in the One Day tournament with 22 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 13.6 with the only better bowlers being Faisal Akram (SLAO), Mubasir Khan (RAOB) and Aaliyan Mehmood (RAOB).

He’s visible in the video I posted above of the Sindh vs Northern final, very briefly at 9:40, showing him bowl one delivery.

No bro, I am not obsessed with height. To be a great or even good fast bowler you need some other qualities as well like ability to seam and swing, cutters, line & length, varying pace, ability to setup a batsman, ability to judge a batsman's strengths and weaknesses and then exploit them and overall bowling intelligence etc.

Height gives you an extra advantage if you have other qualities, but being tall only doesn't make you a great bowler.

Moreover, I believe it is very very difficult for person of Aamir Yamin or Musa Khan's height to be a great fast bowler. You have to be super accurate otherwise you will go for plenty quite often especially in this era when most of batsmen have developed attacking batting techniques and when even tailenders are hitting sixes.

Anyways thanks a lot for the videos. From the above videos Muneeb's swing reminded me Anwar Ali's spell. If he is doing it with kokaburra then I would say its exceptional. Zeeshan is decent but that Ahmed guy looks a bit short but if he is genuinely U16 then its ok.

He had a fairly flop one day tournament, 17th best bowler with 12 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 30.33. Wasn’t able to win crucial matches for his side.

He’s RAOB, but vastly outshadowed by Mubasir Khan and Aaliyan Mehmood who hold the 2nd and 3rd spot on the wicket takers list.

Only one three day match so far, and he is one of the few people who could not perform earlier that is performing in this round of matches. It remains to be seen whether he continues these performances over the rest of the 3 day tournament. I don’t want to underplay him because he might be good, but the 1 day tournament was to some degree low standard (and didn’t have to bowl to some of the few good bats like Huraira and Mohammad Waqas) yet his figures suggest he was being treated with ease. Even within the CP lineup, two other bowlers did much better.

So let’s see how the tournament progresses for him.

On another note, one kid from Balochistan registered 147 against Sindh. His name is Mohammad Ibrahim Sr - very excited that Balochistan is producing a slow but steady stream of talent.

In addition, Adeel Meo picked up a 6-fer after also top-scoring for Sindh.

I don’t like the concept of some youngsters getting more backing from fans than other youngsters because their video was made available first. For example, right now more people are talking about Arham Nawab than Adeel Meo, who also has 9 wickets after his first three day match.

Adeel Meo had a 3-fer in the first innings and 6-fer in the second innings. Arham Nawab had a 9-fer in the first innings then 0 in the second innings.

The reason he is being highlighted is because of a one-match performance, rather than consistency. That is the same reason Aarish Ali Khan from last year has fallen by the wayside, and why I fear for Mubasir Khan and Adeel Meo this year. For example, Ali Tareen often shared Faisal Akram’s videos or pictures so people know about him (it’s fair because he’s the highest wicket taker) while the clueless Sindh set-up has no idea who Adeel Meo is.

Both are SLAO and the difference in wickets is only a few, which means one bad game for Akram or good game for Meo would have been the difference. That’s where talent identification must come in and chances given to the top 2-3 performers as the number 3 performer may overtake the number 1 performer upon investment.

In the Pakistan set-up, this investment rarely takes place. I am sharing as many videos and details of the matches as I can here to spark some discussion and awareness of the youngsters coming through so they are not forgotten in due course.

It's just personal liking for example when I look at a player I look at variations and X factor for example if I had to pick a left arm spinner aurthodox or a chinaman or leg spinner I'd pick chinaman or leg spinner becouse he will most likely have the X factor.

That's the thing with pakistan they know how to spot the talent but they dont know how to groom that talent.

Bad weather spoiled the opening day of the second-round matches of National U19 Three-Day Tournament on Monday as not a single ball was delivered at the LCCA Ground, Lahore, in the match between Balochistan and Southern Punjab.

At Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, only five overs of action took place between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after being put to bat scored seven for the loss of one wicket.

The decision to pause the action was taken to ensure health and safety of the teenage cricketers.

Central Punjab v Northern, Rana Naved Cricket Academy, Sheikhupura:

Northern after being put to bat first scored 254 for seven in 71 overs. Mehran Mumtaz top-scored with an unbeaten 53-ball 47, hitting seven fours. Hassan Abid Kiyani chipped in with 44 off 66 balls, which included six fours and a six.

For Central Punjab, Ali Asfand took three for 75, while Arham Nawab picked two wickets for 87 runs.

Northern’s Mehran Mumtaz scored a half-century against Central Punjab to help his team post 302 on day two of the second round fixture at the Rana Naved Academy in Sheikhupura on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, play remained suspended at Lahore’s both venues due to bad weather as no delivery was bowled at the Gaddafi Stadium and LCCA Ground on Tuesday.

The decision was taken keeping in view wellbeing of the young cricketers.

Sajjad Khan was other notable scorer with 59-ball 35, hitting five fours.

The duo knitted a 114-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Central Punjab 209-9, 73 overs (Mohammad Waqas 49, Sameer Saqib 36; Mubasir Khan 4-63, Adil Naz 2-43)

Update: seems Mohammad Waqas can keep. Made keeper today instead of the lackluster Afzal Manzoor who has had a poor outing with the bat for Central Punjab.

Averaged 50 in the one day tournament, with many good knocks as finisher at number 5/6. Currently the second highest run scorer in three day, at an average of 90 after 3 innings. Officially, he’s only 16 too. I didn’t realize he could keep, even as pure bat his knocks were good enough that I was eyeing him for the number 5 spot in the upcoming U19 team.

Keep an eye out for him and Ghazi Ghouri (18 years old) as keeper options from this batch.

Interesting... hope he plays good cricketing shots. Rohail Nazir was also prolific in the younger age groups and could keep too but it became clear his technique left alot to be desired! We need youngsters that play with a straight bat and know how to rotate strike. Otherwise we end up with the likes of Imam and Sami...

Indeed. This is why I’m thankful to the likes of Ali Tareen who provides expert coaching access (Gio Collusi, Gary Palmer) to upcoming batsmen at young ages. One example is Abdullah Shafique, while even Rohail has been benefiting.

Ideally, this happens at younger age groups though - U16 and U19. What I would like to see is a pro batting coach hired as head coach for the Pakistan U16 and U19 teams, you’ll see yourself how far some of these batsmen can get.

Lahore, 27 November 2020:

Defending Champions Sindh U19 will take on table-toppers Northern in the National U19 Three-Day Tournament final, a four-day affair, at Rawalpindi’s KRL Stadium from 28 November.

Both sides had met in the final of last edition, in which Sindh came out victorious by a seven-wicket margin. Aamir Ali was the star performer, taking eleven wickets for 133 runs.

The two sides have played each other once in the round-robin stage of the tournament. Northern won that match by seven wickets on the back of all-round performance by Mubasir Khan, who took nine wickets for 135 and scored an unbeaten 68-ball 60 in the fourth innings of the match to help his team chase the target easily. For Sindh, Hassan Jafri’s 105 off 192 balls went in vain.

After the completion of group stage, Northern topped the points table with 20 points, while Sindh finished at the second place with 14 points.

They will be led by left-handed batsman Saim Ayub, who has scored 212 runs – including a half century– in five matches with an average of 42.40. He has also taken five wickets in the tournament.

After clinching the National U19 One-Day tournament with a 53-run win over Northern in the final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on 2 November, Sindh will look to repeat the heroics.

Sindh will be banking on its spin twins Adeel Meo and Aaliyan Mehmood, who are placed at number four and five, respectively, amongst the list of highest wicket-takers in the tournament. Adeel, with his left-arm spin, has picked 15 wickets from five matches, with an average of 19.73. His best figure in an innings was six for 32, which came against Balochistan in the first round of the tournament, which Sindh won by nine wickets.

Aaliyan, with his right-arm off-spin, has grabbed 14 wickets from five matches with an average of 27.07.

Northern will be headed by 17-year old wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Raza-ul-Mustafa, who has five dismissals under his belt. He topped last year with 25 dismissals from six matches in the three-day tournament.

The Northern captain will be hugely relying on the expertise of Mubasir Khan, who as an all-rounder has scored 208 runs, with two half-centuries, at an average of 41.60 and took 22 wickets with an average of 14.27. His best figures of six for 37 in an innings came against Sindh, helping his side to a seven-wicket win.

The other notable run-getter for Northern has been Mohammad Shoaib Khan, who has scored 233 runs at an average of 46.60.

Sindh U19 captain Saim Ayub: “We have done our preparations well and look forward to win yet another final. We made mistakes in the round match against Northern, but we will not repeat them.

“Like last season, we will try to end the U19 season on a winning note and take another trophy back home.”

Northern U19 captain Mohammad Raza-ul-Mustafa: “We have worked hard and will try to rectify mistakes made earlier in the final of National U19 One-Day tournament against Sindh.

“We are in the final because of consistent performances from our players and will try to continue this in the final was well.

“Mubasir Khan is scoring runs, and taking wickets. Abdul Faseeh is in good batting form, while Adil Naz is taking wickets. So, overall our players are in good form.”

Haven’t seen Ghazi Ghouri bat but if he’s got a half decent technique then we are in for a good time in future. Scoring more than run a ball and scoring hundreds at this level is a sign of a good future prospect, especially if you are a WK.

He’s not even the only wk prospect, there’s another one called Haseebullah from Balochistan who is also one of the leading run getters.

Century in both innings of the U19 4-day final by Saim Ayub. 108 in the first innings and 134 in the second.

The problem for Ghazi is that he won’t be finding a spot for Sindh anytime soon. There’s Sarfraz Ahmed and then there is Azam Khan and then there is Mohammad Hassan all fighting it out for one spot. With Sindh, nepotism rules. So he’s got nowhere to go.

Can't he change team if moving in different city?

I agree. Aarish Ali and Aamir Ali are in similarly difficult positions with nowhere to go. City Cricket Associations are the answer and need to be set up ASAP.

Another option is a third XI for all regions. I don’t see why not and it can definitely be managed. It will create a division system that enhances chances and upward mobility for performing youngsters.

Along the same lines, I am also wondering about the possibility of expanding the second XI league from 6 teams to 12 teams (2 per region) to provide the larger net to catch players in.

Not sure if the smaller teams with limited resources can compete at the lower level in this scenario. But it’s an idea worth pursuing.
