"Need to raise fielding standards, each team including Pak has got certain parameters" : MSK Prasad

CHENNAI: Luck is a word that was often used in the early stages of MS Dhoni’s career. When whatever he touched turned gold, ‘Midas touch’ started appearing here and there. When his unorthodox yet effective methods became a norm, those words disappeared or made no sense anymore. But may be, who knows, that same luck seems to have rescued Dhoni once again.

In the squad for the limited-over leg of the Sri Lanka series as the only wicketkeeper, it seems Dhoni is in the scheme of things looking ahead to the 2019 World Cup. With Rishabh Pant failing with the India A team in South Africa, the veteran is set to get a good run, even if it means the likes of Pant or Sanju Samson stay in the sidelines.

Going by chief selector MSK Prasad, Dhoni’s inclusion in the limited-over sides is not automatic anymore. “Everybody is discussed. It’s not just MS. When we pick players, talk about combinations, we discuss everybody. You will see that in the time to come. We don’t say it’s an automatic thing (Dhoni’s selection). We all want the team to do well. If he is delivering, why not? If he is not, we will have to look at alternatives,” Prasad said in Pallekele on Monday.

With Prasad revealing that a core group of 22-25 has been identified, there is every possibility that a few more will be tested when Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka come calling beginning September. Despite registering series wins in the longest format, India have not done as well in limited overs of late.

Top of priorities seems to be fitness, which Prasad said, even Pakistan are not overlooking. “We need to raise our fitness levels and fielding standards. We are trying to fix some fitness parameters and whoever it is has to strictly adhere to those. We have two to three phases leading up to the 2019 World Cup and if someone fails to match those parameters, he will not be considered, whoever it is,” Prasad said.

In the Champions Trophy side that lost to Pakistan in the final, Yuvraj Singh and R Ashwin were the slower of movers. The former has been dropped and although Prasad said there is always room for comeback, considering Yuvraj’s age it is hard to see that happening. And with Ashwin, it is understood that he was not even part of the Champions Trophy plans, as skipper Virat Kohli wanted a wrist-spinner.

The inclusion of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and chinaman Kuldeep Yadav indicates what the team wants. As it is, most teams have started showing a preference for wrist-spinners in the one-day and T20 formats. By naming KL Rahul as No 4, the team management is hoping it will address one of their key areas of concern — the lack of an enforcer in the middle.

The right-hander, although definitely a better bet as an opener, will provide something new to ponder over. Then there are Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer to fall back on if this experiment fails. But for the first time since taking over last September, the selection committee headed by Prasad seems to be moving in a definite direction. Till the Champions Trophy, it was largely about trying out established names. Now, there are signs that more new faces will be tested.

Personally think MS Dhoni should stay in the team, star player, big match performer.

On the other side, this is what I like about Indian cricket, doesn't matter who you are, if you don't perform you're out of the team no matter who you are.

dhoni will suck all momentum at no. 5
just retire yourself..

In terms of pure strength Pakistan have always been stronger than India hence the production of fast bowlers but India haveovertaken Pakistan in terms of cardio fitness. Dhoni should retire now as I feel he is past his best and has lost that 'edge' that made him so successful imran:imran

Pakistan must be ready to expect India's best in 2019. The system is too good for them not to be ready. Sometimes winning a lot papers over the flaws, such a huge loss in the CT has provided the impetus to transition the team.

And MS Dhoni WAS a big match performer, he's not a big match player anymore because he is simply too old to perform at the level he was at before. If he's in form he will get the chance to play, but they need to find a replacement fast. Pant and Samson need to get somewhere.

I don't like his tone. There's more to us than Lassi and Parathay :inzi:inzi

However he's on the money about fitness, it's what made the 2 W's so incredible, they could turn it on when they wanted cos they had the fitness to wait all day until the ball started doing something

Interesting that the bit about Pakistan which Prasad allegedly said is not in quotes. It seems like a stupid thing to say and I hope it is just a figment of a journalist's imagination.

Poor comments by MSK, there was absolute no need for him to drag Pakistan into this. Some of our former cricketers really need to shutup and just do their job.

Australia series will be where a call on MS should be taken. It's already too late to induct a new keeper like Pant for 2019 world cup.

I guess that is why they are looking at KL Rahul, Jhadav too can fill in as a make-shift keeper but anyone new with just 30-40 ODI's ahead of next world cup will be far too under-cooked at the big stage.

Was thinking the same. This is just an exaggeration by some journalist. If he actually said that, it would have been in quotes.

I was thinking the same, KL Rahul could do what R Dravid did for India in 2003 WC. However, i do feel we need R. Pant in team as lower order hitter along with Pandya and Pandey. If we manage to get KL Rahul, Pant, Pandey, and Pandya as our lower order, honestly i could see ourselves repeating 2011. Just need to keep Ashwin away from ODI and keep K Yadav/ Chahal.

"Even" Pakistan.

The journalist seems to be enjoying his bowl of sour grapes.

It's fine, if saying stuff like "even" Pakistan helps this guy deal with the CT final loss then so be it. That was a tough loss and people deal with stuff like that differently, let's not judge.

India seem to be planning ahead for the 2019 WC. Thought Yuvraj and MSD may have got another series which would have been a mistake. Also Kuldeep has a chance to cement his place as the number one LO spinner.

FInished in all forms..... there are atleast 7-8 better players in India who have never got a game, should go now. Ms should have retired in 2015 End

If he really said it, then it is really poor from MSK, Indian team's fitness have been on the poorer side as well in the last 6 months

He didn't.

It was the journalist who put words in his mouth.

Here is the full quote. Pakistan was never mentioned.

Another article quotes Prasad as saying:
Skill-level, we are number one in the world; when it comes to fitness, we need to raise our standards. The Indian team management along with the players and selectors sat and fixed certain parameters. This is the fitness parameters, this is the body texture. They have to match them. Today the entire world has got those standards. Including Pakistan [each team] has got certain parameters. Though we are slow, I am sure we will definitely catch up.

Pakistanis are naturally stronger and fitter than Indians and so don't need to focus on fitness as much. The Indian CS is just complimenting our boys.

he never used the word "even"

people are too sensitive and emotional

It is never too late to induct new players if they have shown potential and talent even in mid tournament ( example Inzimam) .Experience is never a guarantee for success.
Sometimes a newcomer has the advantage of being an unknown entity and an ability to surprise and catch opposition off guard. Other times it could be liability.
In this specific case, Dhoni should and in probability will get end of this year to show his worth as an experienced player in the team.
Perhaps he may be moved to no 5 to add stability suited to his current style of accumulating runs rather than hitting out.
Whatever BCCI has in mind, I have a strong feeling by end of this year, Dhoni's career fate will be known. But then its equally possible, Dhoni might just announce his retirement any day like he did in the tests.

India vs Sri Lanka: Virat Kohli's men to undergo random fitness tests to maintain on-field intensity

Dambulla: The Indian cricket team's conditioning coach Shankar Basu has made it mandatory for the players to undergo random fitness tests in an attempt to maintain the same on-field intensity throughout a series.

In every practice session, some or the other player (even a group of them) is put through a rigorous training drills after they have finished with their respective skill-set session (batting, bowling or fielding).

The YoYo endurance test, which has of late been in the news after Yuvraj Singh's failure to clear the same, is a pet project of Basu.

Indian team's form man Dhawan has been spotted undergoing this test twice on this tour already, once before the second Test at SSC along with Ravichandran Ashwin and Cheteshwar Pujara, and then, ahead of the first ODI in Dambulla, along with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

Former skipper MS Dhoni was also put through this test post practice last Friday.

"The fitness aspect has always been there. It is just that it is now more in prominence because it is very important that everyone in the team should be at the same level of fitness. This is because fitness is a major part in all three departments. One moment of poor fielding can change the momentum of the game," Dhawan said after another match-winning knock.

Dhawan termed this new fitness regime as a fair call by the team management.

"In today's cricket, it is not like 10 years back. Things were different earlier but now the game is very high paced and you have to be fit. And it is fair to expect so. If you are not fit, then the team has to bear that load and it is not fair on the team.

"It is something seen not just in Indian cricket but also every other cricket team like Australia, England, etc. They all have fitness parameters, and now, so do we," the opener's answer was an indication why some of the illustrious players could not make it to the side.

Additionally, it highlights a certain acceptance from both the selectors and the team management that this has to be the foremost quantifiable criterion going forward given the plethora of talent available.

"We have got good players. If one goes, there is always another player (to take up that spot), so we can afford to look at this aspect. There has to be a balance. If we don't have a back-up player of same ability, then we know that we cover it (fitness levels) up a little bit.

"Now, we know that we have that (great bench strength) so why not put more responsibility on the players who can come up and do a job for the team," said Dhawan.
