Neil Wagner - No talent, one trick pony bowler

Bowled a beautiful line and length today with some good inswing. If you think hes a one trick pony you just dont watch enough of his bowling.

He might not be a one track pony but his average flatters him. Plays an abnormally high percentage of games in home conditions. Not much of a record outside of NZ.

Because earlier in his career he wasnt selected regularly on tours. He has since proven he is very good away from NZ also.

His away average is not much difference than home average so i dont see how it can flatter him.

Consider this. Starc is another bowler whose average flatters him and even he has played more tests away - in proportion to home tests - than Wagner.

Wagner has done well for NZ in recent past but let's not pretend - using aggregate mean averages - that he's as good as his average.

In other words you dont really have a cohesive argument to back up your point?

Yeah, his averages in ENG, IND, UAE, WI along with the fact that he's played twice as many matches in NZ than away are not argument enough. Have a nice day.

Lmao if he averaged sub 30 in every country he would be an all time great.

He also hasnt been to WI or IND since his career resurgence.

LMAO, that right there shows how unhinged from reality you are. Broad has 4 times the stats compared to Wagner, and he's nowhere in that ATG list.

Wagner has a better average and strike rate than Broad. A far better away average and doesnt bowl with the new ball or dukes ball.

Wow thanks for that one.

Broad has played more than 3 times as many matches and many years more. At this point, I feel like I am wasting my time on a sophomore who gets a stiffy on bare stats with no regard to context.

Amuse me a little more, Pragyan Ojha or Vettori?

Broad might be a better bowler considering the freak shows he displays from time to time and the fact that he can carry the bowling lineup himself but you are making it sound as if Neil Wagner is some Newbie..
52 tests at 26.5 avg means that he has been nothing short of spectacular.
He is no Pragyan Ojha... LOL

Wagner is 35...when this thread was started he was 34. His pace is down from a couple seasons back and he isn't as quick as he was in his youth. What that means is he has lost his key defining feature, speed! That was what hurried batsmen early in his international career and they were afraid to take on a steep, 92mph bouncer. In England, he looked to be bowling more at the 85mph mark but still managed to be best on show in the final innings.

He bowled a very crucial spell final day in the 1st test of the 2018 uae tour, which resulted in a nz victory. Even though his figures dont show it, he was very effective.

Was brilliant in australia, averaged 28 in south africa with a 5 fer. Averages 16 in the one test he played in Bangladesh, which was on a flat road.

Was good final day of this test as well.

I actually dont think he is as good of a bowler as his figures suggest, but his spirit and determination are to be admired

I don't ever remember Wagner operating at 90mph. That's what was always weird about his bouncer barrages, he operates at 132-137k so not real fast, never has been- it's the sheer relentless accuracy, variations in pace & angles that do it. Gets in your head when you realise he's going to home in at your ribs & heart for a good solid hour.

He was definitely a quick bowler who had some great 80 mph bouncers. A lot of it was in NZ though and I think he dropped in pace outside....also he maintained better pace in the shorter formats.
